[Q] Stock Data Settings Not Working - LG Thrill 4G

Got my Thrill last Friday 9/2. Out of the box, it wouldn't connect with data. Spent an hour on the phone with AT&T with no resolution.
I found the APN Settings menu and there was a MEdia Net setting. I noticed there was no user name or password entered. Since this setting was locked, I couldn't change it.
Instead I created a new setup called "Media Net" (lowercase e). I used all the same settings except I used the username [email protected] and password CINGULAR1. Data worked fine after that.
I also noticed that in the APN settings if I set the APN Type to mms, supl (similar to the stock MEdia Net settings) that it locked the fields from editing. So I left this blank.
Anyone else have a similar issue? or find a different workaround?
I'm also disappointed that AT&T has locked us out of using the tethering/ mobile hot spot function.
Is the only solution around that to root the phone?
Coming from WinMo 6.5, the whole rooting thing is new to me.

My data wasn't working for the first few minutes out of the box, but after a reboot I was connecting fine.

Option 2 doesn't require root, although you have to do it every time you reboot.

If you have not seen this thread yet check it out if you are leary of your first rooting bit. I hope it helps.

thanks i followed what you said and my data is working. Only thing is that it runs slower when I changed it to the settings you have. But I rooted my phone and the data stopped working.

I had the exact problem.
Take it to the local AT&T store.
They ended up giving me a new SIM and changing a data plan..
I was on a data plan for Windows phone 7 use and not for Android H+ use.
It doesn't cost more per month, it's still the same rate and usage.. I actually was getting close to my 2G cap for the month, and when they changed my plan it reset my usage ;P

Disable Cellular Data on Tilt/8925

I know this is an odd request, but I'm looking to no-contract purchase a Tilt for a variety of reasons, and one stipulation is that I can disable the cellular data access as I'm unable to currently afford the additional $45 for the data service. So, does anyone know if you can lock the phone to access the internet only through WiFi, or at least to keep it from ever trying to use the 3G network? I know I'll not get the sweet, sweet GPS functionality, but I can wait on that until I can afford the extra money.
Thanks for your help!
I went to Settings and clicked the Connections tab and clicked manage existing connections and changed the number to "isp.cingula" intentionally leaving off the "r" so when the phone tries to connect to data, it has the wrong address. Seems to work for me.
I use NoData from Modaco available here. Its free and works. btw GPS still works, you just need to use software that stores maps on the device. example: TomTom

Haha what a nice workarround =)
Just go into Settings -> Connections -> Connection -> Advanced
Select "My work Network" instead of ATT Connection and voila.
In case you may want to get data again just revert back to AT&T.
I am not familiar with ATT, but they may use a proxy which can cause issue with the wifi, check this if you get trouble with this.
Have you tried adding the Mediamax plan which is only $19.99?
if I add a plan, it'll probably be the MediaMax. But, my company will be adding me to their plan in a few months (and they already have a data package) but my current phone is on its way out, so I need to replace it ASAP.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I appreciate it. One more question, though, do any of you recommend flashing the Tilt to the original HTC firmware, or should I just leave it as is? (That, of course, depends on the fact that the HTC firmware is available.)

internet access issues

so for apparently no reason today my internet stopped connecting. When I go to connect it says -
Dialed: wap.cingular
it says underneath it there is no modem at the above number.
ummm.... I didn't change anything in my setting but for some reason it won't connect to the 3G network. Any ideas here or do we know whats going on?
thanks for the help.

OK check this
START/SETTING/CONNECTIONS/MANAGE EXISTING CONNECTIONS/PROXY SETTINGS
and make sure that there is not a Check in the box next to :
THIS NETWORK USES A PROXY SERVER TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET
This should do the trick I hope.
This always happens to me.
didnt work
no dice. its still giving me the same bounce back message that theres no modem at the above number. do i need to put a proxy server in the proxy server field? by the way this is a Tilt.
What program is trying to access the internet when this happens?
The same problem is occuring for me. I tried what Vol22002 suggested, but still can't connect. I was trying to access Internet Explorer.
Me Too - Atlanta
First thing this morning I tried to access the Internet with Opera and got the "Dialed: wap.cingular Cannot connect for unknown reason. ..." error. No recent changes to phone configs or software, worked fine after midnight last night. Power cycled and checked the usual stuff, still no data connection regardless of program.
Not Me Too Anymore - Atlanta
After not working from 0700 to 1050, I 'suddenly' have a working data connection. Go figure.
You'll probably find that this happens when your network is down. This happens very occasionally here and then I call my service provider to confirm this.

I would say that is the most common reason for the problem the OP is having.
the netowrk isn't down....
My dad's phone (not a tilt) is connecting to the 3G network completely fine. I can't access the internet through any program...internet explorer, opera, google maps, livesearch, the weather tab on my today screen...nothing. I'm at a loss right now.

So Disable the Proxy.
still nothing...with or without the proxy on.
I've been having problems with my data connection and phone service dropping out for the last 2 weeks even though I have changed nothing on the phone. I see an x by data connection and exclamation point by phone. I'm using Dutty's 6.1 official release and radio 1.58.26.20. Usually I can get back service by turning on and off airport mode, and the problem is very sporadic. Usually only when I really need the phone to work! Sometimes just switching between GSM and Auto mode for 3G will provide a temporary fix. I just tried disabling the HSDPA, and we'll see if that helps in a more permanent way. I wonder if AT&T is kicking people off of its network that are using HSDPA before it is supposed to be available. I called AT&T about the issue (w/o mentioning the cooked ROMs or HSDPA and they say I should return the phone for warranty but I don't want the hassle of restoring the old ROM. Any ideas?
is everyone posting here with issues from ATL? I am and have had the same, figured its just a radio issue and have been too lazy to change radios...for those that aren't lazy, i'd try that...
nope, I'm in Oregon. I'm of the opinion that AT&T has changed something about how they run their phone and data networks (perhaps in preparation for the 2nd gen iphone and HSDPA) that is randomly kicking people off their network.

There goes the iPhone messing with Smartphones again. First changes what a Smartphone should be. NOW messing with the network. Hulk Mad!
Nope its not just AT&T im experiencing the same problem over in the UK. Now my proxy is disabled and I know I have all the correct settings but still the error message "unable to connect to the receiving modem." It seems to have no pattern for this happening con we get correlation on what ROM's & radios everyone are using to see if its that

How to just use wifi and totally disable media net

Well i dont have a data plan and only want to use wi-fi when available. Should i delete the gprs settings or is there a program to disable it. I ask this because im afraid of it useing the internet and not wifi. Is there a way to do this. I tried and searched no results
thanks
Do the following to remove any data connections, other than wifi
Do the following..
Start > Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks >
(CHOOSE YOUR CONNECTION FROM THE DROP DOWN LIST).
Choose the one you want. Example MEdia Net
(After Selecting)> Edit > Click and hold on the item next to radio button (example MEdia Net).. when the popup screen (similar to windows right click) comes up click on delete. Then do the following. >> General Tab > Click the button "Delete Settings".
Repeat the steps for other items listed on the drop down list...
NOTE - You cannot delete settings for My ISP & Work Network. Which is fine.
Hope that helps.
P.S - If you ever need the settings back again.. run the Connection Setup Wizard again

I made this video so you can see . its pretty simple if you want to use your wifi connection just enable wifi and fallow steps.

Or use Modaco Nodata, which allows you do enable/disable in 2 clicks.....
Bookmarked.
I do it every time I flash, but I always have to re-figure it out.
Thanks!
wow, search could have told you this in no time flat.
I used to have a regular poo poo samsung phone with that irritating buttonmin the middle to connect. Every time I accidentally pressed it, it would try to connect, and I would cancel immediately. Much to my dismay, I still received connection charges just for trying to connect. Fed up, I called ATT, told them my situation, and requested the ability for my ACCOUNT to use internet be blocked--since I didn't appreciate 6-10 bucks in connection charges (sinceI didn't have a plan). They removed it (not just from my phone no., but from all phones on my account) , and anytime I pressed the button, the connection failed. Upgraded over to a tilt, with the same sim card, any media NET connection fails, since any connection is disabled. Ofcourse, removing the bloatware really helps.
Use Modaco Nodata. I am a wifi only. Here @ work, and @ home. So, no data really needed.
I have NO data plan and its the 1st thing I install. It has NEVER allowed any data, and its a toggle. No other setup required.

Wifi does eat batteries though.

Nice of you to repeat someone.
Thanks everone for the replys, i tried getting logged into modaco but the site keeps telling me my username or passwords wrong even though they just sent me my passaword.
Would anyone that has this .cab file to disable the internet, upload it for me i would really appricate it
I believe the KasierTweak app has the option as well. Of course if you had just searched in the first place I'm sure you would have had your answer several hours ago.

ONLY ONE way to Disable Media Net (AT&T)
The ONLY way to disable Media Net from At&t is to call them and get a WIX block placed on your account. The downside to that is you lose the ability to send/receive picture messages; regular text messages are fine.
I've tried changing connection settings, band settings, etc...
I've tried turning off 3G.
I've tried NoData.
My Touch Pro 2, WM 6.5, keeps connecting to Media Net.... Until NOW, when I had the block placed on my phone account.
I know this is an old thread, but I've been doing intensive searching on the matter, and this page keeps popping up; so I'm posting to let anyone else who's looking know.
IF ANYONE OUT THERE COULD DEVELOP A PROGGIE TO FIX THIS, I'D BE MORE THAN WILLING TO DONATE FOR IT!! (And I'll bet many others would, too!)

Unlocked G1 APN settings- Only wants MMS

First off, i would like to say hello XDA, this is my first post on the forum, so bare with me
Okay, here is my problem. I bought a unlocked G1 and i am using it on AT&T, i rooted it and installed CM on it. I DO have unlimited messaging- (texting AND mms, i spoke to a rep. and he told me this) Okay back to point- after i applied the APN settings, i noticed that the "E with arrows up and down" were lit so i knew data was being transferred. right away i deleted the APN so i wont get charged. But what im looking for is a code or app that will DISABLE data, but keep the APN for MMS. I WILL be using the market and other apps ONLY WITH WIFI, NOT DATA!!! So please help me out with this. i have tried APNdroid- and it didnt work (unless i set something wrong, if someone wants to help me with that)and i tried WisyncPlus (again, i dont think i set it right ). So short and simple- I want a app or code that will ONLY USE THE APN FOR MMS- and ONLY USE WIFI for the browser,market,apps,etc...
Not 100% sure, but I've read somewhere that The G1 will use background data intermittently, even after you turn it off. I used it for a week without a data plan, monitored my account at T-Mobile, and they registered my data use, but it was less than 1 mb a day so they weren't charging me.
Just off the top of my head, I remember the threads saying to not put username, password and server blank under apn settings.
Or downloading anycut, or bettercut, to make a shortcut to "testing" and running that will allow you to turn off data. All this was over at androidforums.com
Bump.... )=. I got APNdroid to work as i wanted it to! (only turn on data for mms, then turn off when the MMS was sent, or recieved) but while searching for "g1 battery tips" i installed "Ultimate juice" then un installed it, and then the dreaded E with arrows popped up and was lit. I checked APNdroid and no settings were modified (Disable all APNs, and enable MMS) I tried reinstalling APNdroid. but no luck )= UGH!!!! this is really pissing me off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[Q] APN: inet.bell.ca_off wtf?

So yesterday I noticed I didn't have a data connection. Nothing would work, facebook, internet, google maps, nothing. No data.
So I dig around in the settings a bit. And find my APN was set to inet.bell.ca_off
Obviously the _off shouldn't be there. So I removed it. I also found my APN Type wasn't set, so I set it to Internet + MMS
And then my data started working again.
Does anyone know why or how those settings would have gotten changed? I don't recall doing anything out of the ordinary with the phone around that time.
Maybe I didn't pay my bill and this is how Bell turns off your service?
Thanks in advance for any insight!
that is so weird, it can only be changed manually
i do not know of any way that it can be changed by itself or via remote programmed script
Most phones are able to remotely receive apn settings. Usually a user request and confirmation is required.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Maybe you used a data toggle app/widget to turn it off. Some apps kill your data connection by renaming your APN.
I don't have such a widget installed. When I found I had no data, I tried toggling airplane mode on and off a few times..... but by then the setting must have been changed already.
