Ha This Really Sucks for us Sprint and Verizon Users

Okay, I really want this device now. I used the Galaxy Nexus before, liked it, but wasn't a big fan of the camera/battery/slower processor comapred to my Evo 4G LTE. I'm impressed that for once a Nexus Device has cutting edge hardware. So I guess this means I'm going to have to drop Sprint to and switch to T-Mobile to get this lol.

My grandparents live in a rural area and its where I spend about 1/4 of the year. Tmobile and Att are GPRS, but Sprint and Verizon have 3g. Its the only internet there and I need reliable internet for work. I can't get the new Nexus.

That really sucks, but yeah, I think Google itself has said that it did not like how the Verizon Galaxy Nexus turned out. In the end, if anyone's been there through the Galaxy S, or S2, or S3, we do know that carrier's influence really does bring down phones, such as a slower processor or bloatware or lack of features. Still, they could have opted for some type of CDMA model but I'm not sure whether they need to work directly with Verizon/Sprint to make it happen.

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed about this as well. I'm on Ting, which rides Sprint's network (and occasionally Verizon's voice network), and this phone annihilates everything else in the price range. The best unsubsidized option at $300 at the moment is the Samsung Galaxy Victory, which while capable, isn't exactly a phone to get excited about--while the SGSIII clocks in starting at $530. The Nexus line has been really appealing as far as price/quality goes. I was really hoping this would end up on Sprint so I could send a well-built phone out to my mom in the sticks where LTE probably won't rear it's ugly head for another few years.
Oh well, I suppose I can take solace from the fact that I couldn't get this phone even if I'd stuck with Verizon.

I've been on Cingular then T-Mobile for 4 years. Ported to Verizon just for the Galaxy Nexus. Now I'm paying the ETF and porting over to at&t. No real problems with Verizon, its just their LTE network is abysmal on battery...and I work for at&t so I get a good discount on service. Just waiting for a good reason to switch.

You'll be glad once you do too, unless you are living in some area where there is no access to T-Mobile 3G. Otherwise its so much better.

Haha yeah, Sprint has been getting better for me, however their speed still sucks when compared to AT&T and T-mobile in my area. Plus, my plan is nearly $100, when I seriously just want text and data lol, I don't care about talking. And also, I find it annoying being on a CDMA network because all these great phone come out, and I have to wait a pro-longed time period to get my hands on one.

I am switching from Sprint for this very reason. Tired of missing out on all the good phones aaaaaannnnnnnd Sprint service is horrible in centrel florida

If you're going to be using a Nexus, I'd suggest Straight Talk. AT&T's network without the massive subsidy penalty. (AT&T forces you to pay the subsidy penalty even if you don't have a subsidized device.)
I'm switching to them as soon as my contract is up... Actually I should do the math on the ETF now. Even with a 25% discount on service, ST still saves me $20-30/month.

Been there done that. 2GB of data and I got warning calls. Don't expect them to be good at all!

I'll be doing the same thing, but I may ride the T-Mobile side of the service for faster 3G.

I have went over 5gb's a month on ST and never experienced slow down or ever had a warning message

I'm looking into ST as well. Only issue is I'm on a family plan and my wife just used her upgrade for the iPhone 5. I'm out of contract but she's obviously isn't. Not sure its possible to switch over to ST?

If T-Mobile coverage is a good option for you Solevei and Simple Mobile are 2 very good alternatives. Solevei doesnt throttle till 4gb and SM states it doesnt throttle at all as long as you play "nice" with the network.

There would be (hefty) early termination fees. A nice thing is that even if she has the Verizon version, it can handle GSM.

Forewarning on those who want to jump to StraightTalk.
StraightTalk has occasional issues where you will lose Data connectivity and the only solution is to restart hoping it has returned. Happened a lot to my girlfriend and dropped them on September. Rumor has it AT&T is throttling mvno networks or some sort. I haven't heard them fixing the issue but

People think T-Mobile will be good and rosy until they actually make the switch to T-Mobile.
I say this... T-Mobile is a good carrier if they have good service where you live and you don't ever leave your area.
But, if you try doing ANY kind of traveling, good luck. I loved T-Mobile when I first got them. I didn't travel much. Then, I started traveling because I got a new job, and I was almost always roaming, had crap service, and tons of dropped calls.
That lasted about a week and then I paid the ETF and got the heck out of there.
No problems on Verizon. Love them, never a dropped call, LTE service almost everywhere I go... Just wish they would stop thinking they're making their users experiences better...THEY AREN'T!

Not sure where you travel, I have always had T-Mobile and travel all over. I cant think of a single time I didnt have good connectivity or service. Any good sized city probably already has "4G" and smaller ones have excellent coverage. I suppose if you find yourself outside of the city you may run into issues, I never have in 5+ years.

T-mobile works fine all over Califoronia, from SD to the norcal. Verizon has the best network service but then again they cost almost double of what t-mobile users are paying. T-mobile users also have unlimited data and up to 5GB of 4G.
Also with simcard base phone, they can be re-used all over the wordl and have higher resell value. You can only sell a verizon phone to verrizon customer.

Leaving Sprint for T-Mobile (Epic 4G Touch)

Didn't know where to put this thread, so hope I am in the right place.
I've been with Sprint almost 2 years (my contract ends in March)
Here is my experience:
My phone has been Epic 4G touch which never gave me good 4G speed regardless of rom/kernel/modem.
-The 4G coverage in my experience has been very bad, if i don't have a good connection I get around 1Megabit down and that's the case most of the time... (Brooklyn & Manhattan)
At it's best it has been around 3megabit down and 0.5 up on 4G.
The 3G is just plain horrible, around 100kilobit.
The voice service was okay but a lot of times calls would drop while driving.
One thing that I liked about Sprint was that I could roam to Verizon where coverage was poor.
I'm planning on ditching Sprint for T-Mobile, I am getting a great deal; since I have a family plan and it's going to be only extra $45 a month with unlimited 4G Voice & Text.
Sprint really sucks, I was suckered in my by "unlimited" 4G which was slow as hell.
-So basically unlimited slow 4G if you are lucky to get full signal.
I should note that I did not have true 4G phone, but WiMax. Don't know if the new LTE is any better, but from what I've read it's not.

More importantly, what phone will you be getting with T-Mobile? IMHO, service among carriers will vary greatly by location. There is no right or wrong provider, but if your experience has been bad, then do what you need to do. My primary concern would simply being able to get the phone I want with the carrier.
WiMax isn't neccesarily a negative - although there are minimum thresholds for LTE and all standards, your performance will depend on several factors including the aggregate use vs capacity of the networks in your area.

That's a good question, I was looking around and Nexus 4 seemed like the phone I want. Then I noticed the lack of SD Card and that is unfortunately a deal breaker.
I'll be going with a BYOD option as in the long run it is going to make more sense financially.
Maybe I could find someone on Craigslist to exchange the CDMA Touch for GSM SII.
The physical performance of the phone is pretty good, i don't think I really need anything top spec atm.
It even ran Linux pretty well with a VNC interface.

Hey everyone, love the phone first of all. My problem? Sprint. I used to have sprint, but ended up going to tmobile with the nexus 4. When I decided to get HTC one, it was either pray for online store to have one available and pay $99 + $90 a month, or get one at a local sprint store and pay $50 for service (sero). Ended up transferring to sprint.
Right now, I'm in dc, and I really have pretty deeply data speeds, even on lte it gets maybe 3mbps... Granted, I know that dc market isn't live yet, but still. At the gym I go to, if I'm on lte it works good, but even with full bars it decides to drop down to 3g often, Shi h results in me not even being able to stream a thing... Never those issues on T-Mobile, reason I wanted new phone was to odd issues on nexus 4 and I wasn't sure if it was phone related, or network. A lot of people seemed to have similar problems on nexus though. It'd end up dropping all service, or just poor reception in general. I've heard that tmo variant of the HTC had much better antenna...
Now, I will be moving to Atlanta in 20 days, I know that T-Mobile is pretty good there. I know that sprint used to be terrible there, but how is it now? The lte there is supposed to be at 70% deploymenet, but I'm guessing that's just the downtown area, I'll be living in buckhead. Anybody out in that area that could comment on speeds?
Financially, makes more sense to stick to sprint. $99 for phone + $50 a month vs $99 phone + $90 a month.

If you want information on where you can find LTE, check www.sensorly.com or get their app from the Google Play Store. That's going to tell you where the LTE is where you're going.

Tried that, doesnf really give too accurate of info, I've used it before for sprint and it gave me really good coverage info, yet, 3g was still obysmal (200kbps).

If you're so concerned, go to Atlanta and test it. You can also check the thread in this particular forum where users are posting screenshots of their speedtests as well as general locations.

My friend had an Evo and moved to Atlanta. Fast forward to now, he switched to Verizon lol.
ps I will gladly take your HTC One off of your hands

I will say this, I live in atlanta and I get lte everywhere including all surrounding counties and cities outside the perimeter. If you are really moving to atlanta you should definitely stay with sprint, things have improved exponentially over the last year or so. Early last year I was this close to switching to at&t and decided to give sprint one more damn year and it turned out to be a pretty good decision. Now sprint might still be garbage in other places but in atlanta its pretty damn good.

Ans to the person who said just go there... I am in June, but it doesn't make sense to go now just to see how it is, and if I wait till June I will be outside of my 14 day.

For the most part I would say that I average about 15megs down with very low pings. Of course its not perfect, at times you will have those moments when you hit 30+megs and other times you will have those moments where you can barely hit 5megs but that doesn't happen very often at all.

Well a few of my friends have tmobile service and for the most part hspa+ is pretty fast as well but ping times are no where near what you can get compared to lte. There aren't many places where I would actually recommend sprint service but atlanta is definitely one of those places where I would recommend sprint.

also if you're looking to keep tabs on the LTE network for sprint, i'd recommend S4gru, its a blog as well you can follow peoples comments and check out what areas are spotting LTE. Just a warning it gets quite addictive i check like once a day for orlando lol

Haha yea, that's partially why I decided to give it a shot, the fact that s4guru listed Atlanta at such high completion. I just don't know, I like the idea of what sprint is doing, they should have very good lte coverage and good building penetration in the future. Although, sadly, a lot of what sprint said over the past few years sounded great on paper, yet, failed in reality.

Hope they merge to a all GSM network, instead of a hodgepodge of all the different tech used by Sprint and T-Mo.
Wouldn't the logical and smart name for the company be SprinT-Mobile?

Seriously, what does this mean for us N5 users? With the addition of Sprint Spark, the N5 can connect to literally EVERY band both companies have, 3G, HSPA+, T-Mo LTE, Sprint Band 25/26/41 LTE, etc...Will SoftBank issue new SIMs to utilize both networks? They might consolidate into GSM, but Sprint Spark is significantly more advanced then HSPA+/T-Mo LTE, and I think that they'd want to utilize that...Either way, should be interesting...

T-Mobile also has 20x20 LTE which is pretty fast. They're most likely going to go to VoLTE route.

in the end i dont really see a down side to any of this. just really hope they dont do away with unlimited data.

If you don't see a downside to this, you have never been on Sprint (lucky you). The absolute worst network has been hemorrhaging customers for quite a while for a reason, me as one of them. I am glad to see the rumor mill is for T-Mobile CEO to take the lead job, but I see great potential for my wonderful T-Mobile to be harmed mightily. Lets hope for the best

Speak for yourself. T-Mobile has 2G coverage in my town. Sprint(which I'm on) has 3G, and in the city next to me, Sprint has blanketed LTE, while T-Mobile has spotty HSPA and barely any LTE. In the sticks, Sprint is almost always better than T-Mobile, hell AT&T has more deadspots around my area than Sprint...

I'll be ok with the merger, as long as its like T-mobile taking sprint over, and not the other way around. Get rid of all sprint higher ups, and keep t-mobiles, because obviously the current t-mobile is much more capable then sprint has ever been since the sprint/nextel merger.
And i better get to keep my $30 100 min, unlim text 5gig data plan.

The most likely course of action is that the networks will remain as is and the combined company will transition to all LTE and eventually shut off the CDMA/GSM/UMTS networks completely.

Considering they will most likely have 800, PCS, AWS and the spark band; they could take one of those bands and use a third for voLTE.

Where I'm located (Houston Tx) T-Mobile sucks. I work w/ some guys who have great flagship devices and they have Tmo and are always getting dropped calls and data is spotty as all get out.
I'm in Biloxi Mississippi now and I have LTE about 70% of the time on Sprint. I have it 90% of the time in Houston and have for a while now. They have come a looooooooooong way. Guess it just depends on where you are located.

If this is seriously the final verdict of the merger...I have to say I'm terrified and excited all at the same time. Sprint is right next to Verizon with me..and I hate both of them, no opinion of AT&T though.
But I'm excited because as long as Legere is still CEO I don't think us original T-Mobile clients have to worry too much (been with T-Mobile since 1999)..and hopefully we end up on a grandfathered plan so we don't lose features or have an insane price hike... Because the most important thing to me on my plan is unlimited data.
Edit : this makes sense now and it goes along with Uncarrier 5.0... Legere wanted to increase revenue...so he got did away with 15% discounts with programs like Triple A (AAA) and made it so only government and military workers are the only ones capable of getting a discount)

[Q] T-Mobile vs Verizon for N6?

Hey everyone, I am looking for some opinions here. I live in Atlanta, GA and have just switched to Verizon from T-Mobile. Originally, I purchased iPhone 6+ and am now using the Nexus 6. I still am debating which I will use day to day, but, I have had nothing but issues with Verizon.
Without too much detail... rep that helped us migrate 3 business lines screwed up. As a result we had a lot of calls with care and managers and ended up getting 30gb of shared web for price of 10gb as well as close to $400 worth of credits atop of $450 in 2 cycles for switching. Great deal overall and helps a ton to cover device costs!
I had no issues with T-Mobile but my business partner is going to Dallas more where he had spotty coverage. On Verizon, he was great there but here... we have issues. From voice quality being much worse than Tmobile (even on VOLTE) to slower data speeds to 3G where we have LTE on T-Mobile. Now, with Nexus 6 I at least will get HSPA while on call with T-Mobile, compared to 0 data on verizon. There are places I get nearly 80mbps on Verizon, but it is cancelled out by overall mediocre performance.
I completely understand that Verizon has amazing coverage and better in-building penetration. However, Tmobile has made huge strides to become a very good data network in many metro areas. While calculating costs, after all credits, we would come out pretty even going back and won't save too much money.
So, given all that, is it worth staying on Verizon? Am I simply seeing greener grass on the other side? I am also worried that with Verizon it will be ages before nexus 6 will get VOLTE and Voice + Data.
Now, I am researching a lot about spectrum and what each carrier is deploying and for some reason T-Mobile just seems to be better when it comes to LTE tech, newly acquired spectrum and overall voice + data.

I was a Verizon customer for 11 years and switched to T-Mobile about 1 and half years ago. Couldn't be happier. Wished there was an easy answer gl with your decision

Thanks! Yea, indeed. From one angle I am thinking that the extra coverage is worth it, specially considering how so many others pay way more than what my plan costs. From another, I am seeing such inconsistent service and decreased voice quality makes it hard to want to stay on Verizon. I do like seeing 75mpbs sometimes though .
I rarely had service issues on T-Mobile everywhere I went around the city, now, it is a daily routine on Verizon.

Sounds like you've somewhat made your decision then
75mbps or 25mbps it doesn't matter to me but to some it might (I get 50mbps down and 25 up). Love HD voice it's crystal. What I love most though? That I am no longer with the big red corp and am with the most innovative and exciting carrier of the last 2 years

Haha i hear ya. To me, anything over 5mbps is good as on mobile it all loads instant and videos buffer fast. So im not crazy in thinking that tmobile has an overall more advanced network?

Good question I really don't know. I don't think you're crazy for thinking that. Tmo has turned the carrier world upside down and I believe all subscribers of all carriers can thank tmo for their lower prices and higher GB data plans.
I had to drop vzw because we moved 1 1/2 yrs ago to suburb of Atlanta and it's a vzw dead spot. No prob with tmo though. Blessing in disguise

So you pretty much live by me sounds like. Interesting, that just means that it may not just be me then. At first I thought it was either my phone or the sim, verizon replaced both though. It seems like service always bounced between 2 and 4 bars of LTE at my house which creates random results. At times I could be getting 2mbps down while another verizon phone is getting 50, and vice versa. Speed isn't eveytbing, but there is no consistency and added with bad voice quality even on volte... A week ago I drove out towards Lawrenceville to help a friend look for a car and I kept dropping to 3G or having data so bad that even mobile sites would not load. My gf has T-Mobile and I grabbed her phone to test, she was literally getting 40 Mbps to my 1!

Haha! I live in mableton/Smyrna area. I have great coverage on tmo where ever I go in and around Atlanta. Especially now with the moto N6 its radios rock. 3g on vzw is like edge on tmo. They're both painful. I rarely if ever have seen edge in and around Atlanta on tmo (only one spot I know of) but often saw 3g on vzw. Tmos hspa/umts is super fast

How is voice on n6? I popped Tmobile sim in it and it wasn't very good when I tried. I've read that volte and hd voice won't come to n6 on Tmobile till early 2015? Yea, I always told people about how good hspa on Tmobile was lol. It killed LTE on most carriers originally. Other than having a little higher ping.

Already has HD voice spoke with it today. Volte will be a while yeah. I think voice quality is great, HD and non-hd

If anyone else has any input, greatly appreciated. I downloaded root metrics app and looking at places I go T-Mobile seems to have much stronger data than verizon. Although, voice coverage seems a tab better on verizon.

if you live out in the country, or spend lots of time out there, then tmobile is not for you. i love tmobile, and they have wonderful data speed where i live(70mbps download/30mbps upload. southern brooklyn), but out in the country, they arent so good. in cities, they are wonderful.
