Droid 3 - Unlockable

Since the 12th, I have been trying to find an unlock for the phone, and stumbled upon a seller who goes by Swiftunlocks. He has provided excellent service, and his unlock code for the Droid 3 works 100%. I would recommend his service to anyone who wishes to have their phone unlocked. He charges a fee, but he's also the only one around to unlock phones for people who aren't with Verizon.

You can find his services His support was excellent as well because even when out of business hours, he sent me my unlock codes minutes after paying.

But i dont think we can use this phone here in us with gsm even after unlock.

And why shouldn't GSM work after an unlock in the USA, you think?

The T-Mobile and AT&T bands are locked out, even with the SIM slot unlocked. Verizon does this with pretty much all of their global Android phones. It's presumably because they're the exclusive carrier for them in the US, so they don't want anyone being able to use them on another major US carrier.

Hmm weird stuff out there in the USA =)
And if I buy a Droid 3 in the USA, buy an unlockcode and unlock this Droid 3.
Can I use it on GSM-network here in Europe (the Netherlands) or isn't that possible?
Here we also have T-Mobile as a provider, will that work? And Vodafone? That's what I have...
I'm gonna start a topic here on XDA about the best 'version' of the Droid 3 for using in Europe / The Netherlands. You have the Motorola XT883 version in China, you have the Droid 3 version in the USA and there is the Motorola XT860 4G in Canada..
But that's offtopic, I'm gonna start a new thread about that!

I'm not an expert at this, but they should work if the bands are the same. They locked out the AT&T bands on the Verizon Droid 2, im not sure about the droid 3.

Droid 3 will work on FOREIGN sim cards when unlocked, but will not work on AT&T USA and T-Mobile USA. I read somewhere that they are making a Droid 3 or something similar for AT&T though. I left links, from where I found this information if you would like to see for yourself

No, it won't be.
If it has the Droid 3 name (which means it's the Verizon version of the phone), the SIM slot will be locked regardless of where you buy it. Some versions released in other countries (like the XT860 4G in Canada) may or may not be SIM locked. That remains to be seen. But anything called the Droid 3 will be SIM locked out of the box from any retailer, even Motorola.

An unlockcode will cost you about $30,- so that isn't a problem

I suppose it will be locked, too, but I'm not sure. On the Motorola store site, nowhere Verizon is mentioned -- moreover, when needed, they generally refer to "your servive provider". And nowhere anything is said about a locking, not even in the "Product Disclaimer" link.
I will eventually know when I got the phone. Of course I'm prepared to pay $30 for unlocking, but if I have to, I'll write a complaint to Motorola.

Could someone please provide a link to a reliable service for unlock codes. I couldn't find anyone on Ebay with the name swiftunlocks...

Then I'd go ahead and get that complaint typed up and that money for unlocking ready to go.
They use "your service provider" because they sell phones for different service providers. It's easier to have a blanket statement rather than tailoring the statement to every single device. Verizon pays for the rights to use the "Droid" name. So any device with that Droid name is the Verizon version of the phone. There's no reason why Verizon would allow devices with the name they paid for the rights to (through a very costly deal with LucasFilm no doubt) to come unlocked to be used on other carriers if they aren't allowing it for all of the phones. In the end, if you buy it directly from Motorola, you'll just pay $65 more ($525 vs $460) than you would if you bought it outright from Verizon for the exact same locked phone.

Go to ebay and search for droid 3 unlock. You'll find sellers: freedomobile and unlock_fusion.
I don't know if they will work, but more than 99% of their customers is positive about them. Keep us posted when you try it out.

I just hope everyone understands what "unlock" you are getting as it is NOT the boot loader. Seems like on other forums they think its a boot loader unlock

Got my D3 from Motorola store. As expected, it was SIM locked. But I can confirm too that codes from swiftunlocks work!

Like others, I couldn't find a retail site for swiftunlocks on ebay - I must be doing something wrong - but as others said, if you search ebay for "Droid 3 unlock" you will get a couple links to other sellers of unlock codes but

That's complete BS. I was ready to buy the D2G outright (not a Verizon customer), but didn't because of this prime example of Verizon continued lock down of their devices.

Much like AT&T and T-Mobile locking their devices as well? Sure you can unlock the phones but you have to be a customer for X amount of months, and that's the same with Verizon. Much like how AT&T for a while didn't like anyone side loading applications on their Android devices? Much like AT&T not allowing their iPhones to be unlocked?
Sorry man before you make any one carrier/manufacturer look like the "bad guy" you should make sure others are not doing it.

Yah but on a att or tmobile phone you can simply buy the code and voila you are good to go. You unlock a vzw phone and you still cant use it since they put custom software that specifically blocks u from using it in the U.S. so when you unlock it its still not really unlocked. Its a douche move.

Reread what I said, and think harder about what I said. Regardless if you can pay or not. It's still locked from the moment you purchased it. You have to wait Months to get an unlock code or pay someone to unlock it for you. Just because Verizon locks you out from using it from other carriers there are way to adjust it. You could always purchase a milestone which is the same thing right?

Actually, most unlocked AT&T and T-Mobile smartphones won't work on 3G on the other's network. Different bands. Same sort of attempt at locking the phone from being used with other domestic carriers just like Verizon. When the companies pay for an exclusive within the country, they want to do their best to protect their investment and keep it exclusive.

This also applies for GSM carriers outside of the US? I live in Barbados and we use 1800 I believe, was looking at picking up a D3 unlocked once the bootloader lock had been circumvented.

Actually I was referring to the carrier lock that needed to be removed for US bands.

according to the wikipedia entry it does not support 1800Mhz bands =\ If I'm not mistaken, that's the same as Tmobile in America for UMTS 3G bands

Regardless of where you buy your phone it will be locked to Verizon. Verizon will provide an unlock code to customers based on certain prerequisites. This code will allow you to use another carrier's sim cards while outside of the US, but you can not use any US based GSM providers.

According to GSM Arena, the Droid 3's hardware supports HSDPA on 3 of the four 3G frequencies, including the two that I think AT&T uses (850/1900), and one that I think T-Mobile uses (2100), and it supports 2G GSM on all four frequencies.
If the bootloader ever gets unlocked and we get custom roms, will that potentially remove the carrier restrictions for GSM networks??

Potentially.
The only other way is to have the required files from Motorola to unlock the bands, which aren't publicly available. Team Black Hat evidently has what's needed to do that for the Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro, but you have to send your phone into them along with $100 to get it done. Maybe there will be an option like that in the future for the Droid 3.

I seriously hope so. I messed about with the Droid 3 at the Verizon store and I really liked it. I'd love to be able to use it (or Bell's version) on T-Mobile.

Yes, a non-Verizon rom can solve the problem. A lot of Chinese user bought Droid 3 from ebay and flash it to China-Telecom rom (major carrier in China) and get all bands unlocked, no GSM unlock code needed in that case.

But what about unlocking the US based GSM carriers?
And what about the aosp roms?
Is the restriction in the rom, or in the radio file?
There's a CyanogenMod 7 alpha version being developed, and people are reporting that something in its build.prop gives them better gsm reception overseas. Would it also allow a US Droid 3 user to use a US GSM carrier, such as AT&T?

Subsidy Unlock and You. Well, Them.

I've been doing a lot of research on this but I'm still coming up short on a few answers.
I'm considering purchasing a Droid 3 but here's my particulars:
My personal service is V-dub. Business service is AT&T. Assuming I unlock the Droid3 can I use the V-dub service while I'm stateside and leave the AT&T SIM on-board the device? If so, is it possible to switch between AT&T/VZW service via software?
When I'm traveling international would I be able to switch to the AT&T SIM service without racking up mad billz on the VZW side of the house?
ANyone with some experience on this would be appreciated. If I can't do all this with one device then I'm leaning to buy a Nexus S.

I wanna say you can because your phone allows you to switch between GSM/Global/CDMA.

I believe this can work with the XT860 model from canada, the US XT862 however, cannot move between US carriers, but can be used anywhere outside the US

According to a guy at this link Team Black Hat sells a *full* unlock code for the 3's which will allow it. This is unconfirmed but I'm Googling...

if i recall correctly, TBH offered a version of the D2G baseband firmware which they'd modified to run on any network, this cost you $100 and you had to mail it to them
i believe Cellzealot has stated that this method wont work on the D3

TBH released the band unlock to the public couple of months ago.It is now free. It only works on the oldest D2G radio firmware. Newer firmwares cannot be unlocked since Motorola moved the protection inside baseband which due to locked boot loader cannot be modified. This method will not work on D3 for the same reason.

Unlocked Moto X question

I am in the market to get either the nexus 5 or moto x. Finally switching off of Verizon and thinking of going to AT&T.
I want to MotoMake my own Moto with the unlocked (T Mobile) option, if i do so, is there bloatware or carrier logo?
And if no, then my next question would be if I used it on AT&T, do I lose LTE? I was told mixed things, that I would and I may not have AT&T 4G LTE.
Because then I may just get the Nexus 5.

You don't lose LTE. You may have to call up AT&T to make sure AT&T lists it as a LTE device, as a few people here have done.

Which upgrade are you taking about? If you mean the 4.4 KitKat, then you'll probably see it soon after you turn on the phone unless it ships with it already. Any subsequent updates you should see soon after T-Mobile releases it no matter the carrier.
If you're talking the two year upgrade for a new phone, then it's two years from the date you sign the contact. Although that doesn't matter if you're buying your device outright.
For the last question, the only devices that have a safely unlockable bootloader are the dev devices, not the MotoMaker ones. You can unlock the bootloader on the T-Mobile phone, but in doing so you will void your warranty. Unlocking the bootloader on Dev device will not void the warranty

You'll get it when T-Mobile releases it. I've never been on their service and I got the notification for kitkat about 10 minutes after I inserted my straight talk sim card that's using at&ts towers

I've been doing research and making a lot of calls to both AT&T and to motorola regarding the GSM unlocked(Tmo) version of the MOTO X on the ATT network. Specifically, I have asked ATT about the 850 Mhz LTE band (which is not supported on the GCM unlocked X) and how, If at all, would my service be affected by the lack of this freq. NO one at ATT seems to know anything. I asked moto(numerous times) before I ordered and was told it's the "same phone" or that it "will work". No one seems to be able to tell me specifically if not having this band will adversely effect my ability to get service as I travel the country(US). The phone arrives wed and I'll post again with the results. After I update the APN settings(if needed) we'll see what happens. The only reason I opted for the GSM unlocked version is to be able to use PDA NET + to tether and use another carrier if I desire. (grandfathered unlimited data).
Another question:

No, you have to get an unlock code from Motorola and it voids your warranty.
Why not just get the GSM Dev Ed and keep your warranty after you unlock it?

I bought the Dev edition and inside there's this piece of paper that says that after requesting the unlock code, it'll void the warranty, weird

AFAIK, the 850MHz band is only used for 2G/3G, which is usable by the unlocked X. From my research, I don't see anyone with any plans to use LTE on that frequency.
Short answer: If AT&T or one of their roaming partners has service, you should be fine.
Another question:

You would not be able to use native tethering unless you pay for the tethering service to the best of my knowledge.
From what I remember of PDA.net from years ago was that it did not need root to function.

That was/is the original stance by Motorola. They got a bit of backlash and reversed the decision for the Dev devices only.

That was their old policy. Motorola has reversed themselves on that policy.

Hi guys I've just bought a US Cellular Moto X from eBay and I plan to use it here in Australia. I'm not very familiar with CDMA phones as all the networks here in Australia are GSM so I don't know the limitations of CDMA for overseas use. I've heard that an unlocked CDMA phone can be use with a sim card overseas but also heard that the Sprint Moto X can only be unlocked OTA or by flashing another ROM.
So my question is: 'Is there a way to unlock the US Cellular Moto X from overseas for overseas use with a sim card? And also is the boatloader already unlocked or do I have to unlock it myself like the verizon version?

I'd return it if you can. AFAIK, the sim card slot on US cellular phones is only for their 4g LTE data and is not compatible with gsm networks. I could be wrong on that though.
The unlocked(t-mobile), gsm developer edition, or at&t would be best for gsm networks. Just know that you would probably need to buy a sim unlock code for the at&t model.
If you're looking at unlocking the bootloader, then go with the unlocked or developer model. If you're worried about warranty, get the developer edition since you can unlock the bootloader and you don't void your warranty if you fubar the phone.
Just my two cents.

Oh okay, because I bought it primarily to use as a kind of iPod replacement. Just to use it primarily for music and stuff because I already have the note 3 as my main phone. I was really wanting to get a T-mobile one but ended getting a really good deal for this one (saved around $150)
It would have been good to be able to use the Moto X as a backup phone or secondary device for when I go overseas or camping or something like that. But I'm not too worried about it, it would have just been nice to know I had the option. And as far as warranty - the phone has a bad ESN so I assume that the warranty is no longer in place? I'm not very familiar with the whole ESN thing either.
So is the boatloader locked on the US Cellular? And also would I be able to receive OTA updates with the bad ESN and all? Sorry for all the questions - I just have no clue on how network providers do their thing in America.

Oh okay, that's good to hear.
Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. The phone was pretty much brand new with everything so I don't he stole it unless he ran off without paying over the counter. He seemed like an honest person but I wouldn't know really. I just bought it because I sold my iPod and wanted an android replacement for it. Again I do apologise if I offended you in any way but I appreciate you answering my question.
