Ice Cream Sandwich - Nook Color General

So....now that this thing is out and it will be open source..............
<insert evil grin here with twiddling thumbs>
Thoughts?

SDK is out not source code. Anything built from the SDK will have the same problems as the Honeycomb ports. I can't wait for the source to be released then we can really dig into.

Oh....my bad. I guess I must have confused my lingo.
Sigh, I really hope it's open-sourced this time so people can start tinkering with it.
Nook Color is sad.

But once its source is released I can't wait for it to be ported to the Nook Color. ICS has many features that would be beneficial for our 7-inch friend.
Check out Android 4.0 ICS highlights on the Android Dev site:

What are the ramifications of ICS having a native resolution of 720p? Will this hinder its ability to be ported to our Nook Colors and 6 month old phones with qHD displays?

Well they did say it'd be able to go to other devices. I can't imagine them letting it only support new phones. The publicity they'd get for that would be absolutely terrible. Or people would force it to work on it once the source is out.

Alright, so now ICS is around the corner and with all the hype surround it, can someone pls list the advantages of it? What feature does ICS offer that missing on Gingerbread/Honeycomb?
I know one is Widget is resizable, interface is Honeycomb-like.

In celebration of the release of ICS I made a monument in a MineCraft server, check out the pictures:

ICS doesn't have a native resolution, the Galaxy Nexus does... The whole idea behind ICS is that it'll run everywhere.

I'm loving the data usage app

We plan to release the source for the

Darn, that means hoping to have CM8/9 by Christmas is wishful thinking Though a Nook specific ICS port may come by December if source is released by November (depending on the determination of the Devs)

I was hoping that the NookColor was still going to see work when ICS source comes out. Here's hoping that the sharp folks here can work their magic, and we can heat up the thanks button again.

the sad part is that nook 2 may be out by then and nook 1 would be left behind. hope not

I really hope ICS is ported soon for the nook color, because it's unusable at the moment

i can see this as being an integral part of the next upcoming android tablets once tgw newness of honeycomb has worn off. The only problem that I can forsee is the need for better processors beyond a dual ccore 1ghz. The heat and battery drain would have to be addressed as well. But all in all, something to look forqard to

I'd kill to be able to just display 2-3 different apps like the above video even if they were just suspended. In fact that might be another option they could implement to save battery life. It would just make switching between certain tasks easier. I'm still trying to find just what my tablet's niche is in my world...this might actually make it replace my laptop for some work related tasks.
any new info on beta or release date?

Here is what I got back from Onskreen ... I asked them about release date and possible beta testing.
Hi Brian,
Thanks for reaching out to us and for your patience. It is indeed Q3, and we are working as fast as we can with the OEM's interested in including Cornerstone with their devices. It's consuming all of our engineering resources to work with them. That is a good thing and a bad thing. The bad because we can't yet support a user beta.
Regarding Honeycomb, we would not legally be allowed to release a Honeycomb beta with Cornerstone. Since the honeycomb source code is closed and owned by Google, for us to include Cornerstone with it and release it to users would be a violation. Any public beta we do would have to be on Gingerbread.
We're paying attention and know you've been reaching out since the start. We definitely have you on the list, and are doing the best we can.
Thanks!
Onskreen Team

Makes sense now the gingerbread references, clearly this requires modifications to the OS and isn't just a launcher, hence them being unable to go directly to users and being unable to release a honeycomb version.

What happens to Android naming if it does reach the letter Z?

Revert back to an older version name, like Donut to Doughnut?

Nah. First off, they'll probably never reach Z as they'll have a new naming convention by then, but if they do then they'll just go back to A and do something other than desserts.

Now that both Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich are "out there," I sure hope the Nook Tablet can take to this stuff right out of the box. If that's the case, and CM9 or whatever will be ready to roll when the Nook Tablet officially hits stores so I can go demo one (not that it'll be running HC or ICS, obviously), this is gonna be one damned awesome holiday season.
Can't wait to see what some of these talented folks can do with HC or ICS on my trusty HD2 as well. w00t!!!

That said. I wonder if all the work on HC SDK will make it any easier to get a port going?

Perhaps only marginally.
The work that's been done on kernels and hardware drivers for CM7 will be helpful, but of course it will take time to get everything integrated.
Perhaps my understanding of android is off, but I believe SDK = allows us to build compatible kernels for our devices. Source = allows us to build the rom from scratch rather than port it from another device.

The SDK allows developers to build apps and thats pretty much it.
It looks like it unofficially called CM9 by Steve Kondik (aka. Cyanogen himself) and we won't see it until next Jan. Hopefully he won't abandon the NC.

Well his Twitter said "Check back in 2 months" but that is still pretty ambiguous. It could mean that alpha/nightly builds will start coming out long before then, but perhaps he is giving January as a target for semi-stable builds.

sweet, hope we get it soon.
Please don't turn this thread into a SPAM thread, or ask questions like "when will it be released". We'll have it once it's ready, and you asking about that won't help anyone so please don't. Let's keep this one clean with only announcements or actual facts in regards to ICS development. Thanks
How come we "discuss" a rom by just watching pics and vids and not installing it.. .
I guess we may be able to though... in couple of days.
This is great! Too bad he didn't continue the video on the Browser Portion. It's where we can see if ICS hardware acceleration works on OB by judging the smoothness of the scrolling. I heard ICS needs new driver for existing GPUs but i hope I'm wrong.
Most of changes are approved and merged into git repository. I think we're getting ICS soon on next nightlies together with O3D, maybe. cmiiw
I don't think it will be in the next nightly ! because it's CM7 nightly and ICS will be CM9.
Maybe in another branch (or not, because I think it's nude ICS for the moment...)
can not wait to test ASAP

MIUI battery mod was designed to read color from theme resource, but only Cyanbread and Androidian themes have been specifically modded to comply with this condition, as far as I am currently aware. Changing the stock theme to Androidian will change it to green.
The default color was originally piss yellow . It was eventually changed to match the stock green. I specifically change it to cyan, when I build, because I happen to use CyanbreadX, which does not natively comply with the mod, and I personally prefer that color to match CyanbreadX on my device. Until other themes are adapted to comply with the MIUI mod, the color selection will remain as is.
Unfortunately...I wouldn't hold my breath on themers adapting their themes to comply with the mod. It is highly unlikely to ever be merged into the official builds, especially given the shortened life expectancy of CM7 in general.
The real ***** of it happens to be that when the mod very first appeared, one could literally select a custom color, which was awesome. Alas, the dev opted to point it another direction.
Downloading now...goin to test this bad boy out .
Edit: fully functional and swift! Thanks!
