have we been making the gps worse? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

NOTE: we all know the GPS sucks. this isnt about that. its a question of have we been making it worse~
I was just driving my forklift and had a thought, please excuse me not adding to another post as I am doing this through tapatalk.
you know how to gps uses wifi networks to help position? Do you think custom (longer) wifi scan interval is interfering?
Some roms are 2 minutes between scans.

Interesting thought... So what is the shortest interval that can be set and I imagine that would affect the battery usage of course ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

I am unable to test until later tonight but if someone else wants to try today you can edit your build.prop info using root explorer. is in the system folder, look 4 wifi scan interval and change the number to a lower value, then reboot your phone and see if the g p s locks on any quicker

default from most carriers is around 15 seconds, custom roms can be anywhere up to 2 minutes or more

Hi TRusselo - I was looking at my build.prop. The only line I have is RO.wifi channels=. I am running Serenidpity 6.4. I would really like to slow the scanning down because when you watch it it's scanning like a mad fool.
Thanks
superdo404

then look up on xda build.prop tweaks. and add whatever tweaks you want using any text editor on your phone. sorry I am answering with my phone at the moment and don't want to give you typos

I just tried to edit the build dot prop with root explorer's built in editor, it would only let me replace 2 numbers with 1, (acting weird) so I copied to my pc edited and then copied back to the phone.
It's handy having a netbook at work....
I will post results later tonight

so gps has been better while in town, quick locking while standing still, takes a bit to initially lock if moving at high speed but is expected.
i have been using a setting of 15 seconds, trying 25 seconds next.

You might wanna clarify that this does not apply to the ppl who cry about the phone being a crappy "stand alone" GPS. Else someone is gonna bring it up and de-rail the topic.
But it does bring attention to an ignored factor when using network location. So now ppl will have to consider the trade-off...
I'd figure much more then 30 sec will become problematic, and cause missed turns in dense urban areas.
leaked from my FUSED SGS I897 contaminating you via XDA app.

yeah thats why i originally re-titled it, with the "worse" part. but will update OP.

I upgraded from Hero to IS and the only thing that IS let me down is its GPS. Hero is much faster to acquire a lock and being stable afterward. But IS is very unstable in this regard. Sometime it takes only a few seconds while most other time at least 5 minutes. I'm talking about testing at the exactly same spot but different time.
Maybe try out scmasaru's suggestion later.
are you talking about GPS without WiFi network ? My IS can not catch GPS if no wifi is on.

Help you with what? Buy an Atrix if you want faster indoor GPS.
The only time I need GPS is when I'm outdoors, so I don't see the issue unless you have a habit of waking up in strange buildings...
Just learned from another thread that the antenna of IS is attached to the battery case. So maybe all our GPS reception problem is caused by a loose connection?

[Q] Better WiFi signal (not the 802.11n support)

Sorry I opened a topic for this here, but I can't write in the dev threads.
First of all, I must say, I only want answers, and someone to test it, but be careful, because you can fry (no, not brick) your phone, if you place a huge number to the... but lets get everything in order:
I noticed a line in the tiwlan.ini file that nobody mentioned. This line is TxPower=205.
It's used to set the power output level of the built in antennae.
Now goes the trick:
-If you lower it, it will shorten the distance of the signal, but it's quality goes up, so if you have unstable connections, this MAY help you.
-If you write a higher number, you get better strenght, but in cost of quality.
This is the theory, and it works on Routers or Access Points (with some not-so-legal firmware updates), so I believe it will work on mobiles.
Note that more power=more heat and more power>battery life!
So I just want to know which numbers are the best (and safe) for long- and for short distances?

1. think of wifi as 2 ppl standing in 2 places trying to talk to each other. u either raise or lower your voice depending on the distance between you 2 and any obstacles in between. figure that out and u'll pretty much figure your own question out
2. why can't u test it yourself?

Precisely. I don't think anyone here tried it so far, so there won't be any replies for your question. All you can do is test it and tell us if mingling those settings enhances wifi
Gonna try it out later... will report back.
I have modified this setting on PC wifi card drivers back in the day when WEP cracking still was a new thing.
?................................
I dont't want to try it, because I haven't got money for another mobile if it fails, and I just bought that phone. BTW it is sure works, but it needs testing.
I gave the idea, you test it... or... not? Damn I'll test it then, but need confirmation from other phones.
Sry for my english.
Edit:
Okay, The default dBm is 69-70 here. I changed the value to 210: nothing changed. I changed it to 120, and the signal is now 69-67 (I held the phone in one place through the time and nothing placed anywhere between me and the router)... strange, it is like nothing changed, or at least the difference is really small. I don't dare to set an extreme high number (like 300 or 400) (the description says "#set Default Tx Power Level in DBM * 10", so it is 20,5 dBm at default, and this is "Maximum output power from unlicensed AM transmitter per U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules 15.219.[1] Typical wireless router transmission power.") Note that laptops has got 15 dBm (32mW) wifi cards typically!
i done this TxPower=400. for 2week on this setting and had a+ wifi for 500yard away from my house and i just move it back to 205 for heat problems and now i cant even get out of the front door of my house with out lossing 1 bars of wifi so yes it dose work for me

As you can see from the post of "BIG JD", 400 brings large heat emit, so I think 300 will be in the safe zone. I only dared to set 230, but it made just a little change. I think the signal strength will be parabolic if you raise the TxPower, so 300 must be enough. Just try not to fry your phone with an accidental wrote +0 after the 300!
Oh, BTW you can see a chart here from what thing emits how many power:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DBm
Note that raising TxPower may illegal in some countrys!

Possible to beat cricket throttling?

Ok i am being throttled at 5-7 kbs which sux!! So ive been google hunting and have found very little on beating throttle "all i wouldnt trust." So i started digging into system files. I found a file named cci_ro.prop in data/flex which when opened as text has alot of options to edit over ip/network. I understand some but not all of options unfortunatly. I will toy around with it very softly see what i come up with and maybe beat cricket throttling for good and without having to flash unknown to zio.

I found this very interesting thread called 'Data Service Governor Killer.'
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10100043&postcount=1
The author of the thread mentioned that the data governor killer is compatible with many other roms. From reading the thread, I think that I understood that the governor killer modifies a file in the Android system directory named services.jar
These are the throttled files that can be found in the classes.dex inside the services.jar file directory (examples from a moto droid) and the governor killer removes them,
ThrottleService$1.smali
ThrottleService$2.smali
ThrottleService$DataRecorder.smali
ThrottleService$InterfaceObserver.smali
ThrottleService$MyHandler.smali
ThrottleService$SettingsObserver.smali
ThrottleService.smali
The data governor killer is flashed under recovery mode by using rom manager or something of the sort. I do think that this may be possible for us to do in CWM or to integrate this with openZio.
It would be awesome to have the data service governor killer along with Juwe11's ram script modification added to a future build of openZio.
EDIT:
I found this tutorial http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-hacks/105807-guide-how-stop-data-throttling.html which doesn't require flashing I think.
Nice, now let's see how long it takes them to catch on and terminate your service.

Edit: did you reboot after changing to true pomer? Also i just want to say that i was 100% throttled i called cricket cs and they verified that i had gone over my 1 gig mark.
The only thing that i can think of me changing was a day prier i deleted the folder throttle and cleared out the folder usagestats "then rebooted". Both folders are found in data/system. On reboot system made another throttle folder and had replaced the 2 files in the usagestats system reseting both files with all 0's in the files. No speed increase i was still hitting 5-7kbs everywere i did the speed test. Tested outside, inside, in car all still the same. I am still getting 150 and above right now. Weird ill let ya no if anything changes.

@bryanskinner, I am new to the droid world. Just recent got a job to afford a cricket phone! I've have discovered the beauty of rooting a phone with my ascend.
I just got the ascend2, and there is little to none support for it right now. I have the phone rooted and do not have clockwork recovery on the phone. Is this a must have? b/c i dont want to rush things for the mod b/c a2 not supported just yet but of course there is a way to mock clockwork mod.
As for fastdormance=true i have no idea how you would get to that system file and i have no idea if i need a custom rom on my phone or can i just use my stock os? Im asuming i need to get a program for my computer to access system files? or is it simply an app?
Please help. I WANT MY NETFLIX BACK. it took no time at all for the startling truth of cricket's throttling to arise and great me with retarded slow speeds.
FYI @mattix, you might like to know this..... I work for verizon as a tech support agent and no, cell phone companies will not cancel your service if you bypass your phone throttling even if we see it in our systems. in fact it is highly the opposite. you can do anything to your phone from rooting to whatever. just trust me.

Here is an idea: don't come into our forum and berate us over OUR product-choices. FYI, we piggyback on Verizon's data network, and much of the time, we're just as fast.
Anyway, here are some abridged posts from pyrixiate from the OpenZIO development thread that solve the throttling problem.
pyraxiate said:
IT WORKS! One drawback... you cant access settings/mobile networks. Not sure why but others report the same on other devices. Ill look into it and try adding one throttling service back at a time and hopefully it will resolve the issue.
All i did was decompile [services.jar] , wipe ALL of the throttling services, and recompile.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/37729675/services.jar
Credit goes to Sino8r here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863923
PS
It definitely helped my bandwidth issues. I know im well over 5gb this month and i noticed a heavy reduction in speed. Using this id say it want back to around 50-60% what it originally was.
Please note, I have NOT had the time to determine which specific throttling services specifically have an impact, so for now you WILL not be able to use settings/ mobile networks ( this is also repeated several times in other threads using the same method ). One of those throttling files if removes causes FC's.

Once again, this particular services.jar was decompiled, stripped of it's throttling services, and recompiled by pyraxiate, and this link is to his dropbox that he posted in the OpenZIO development thread.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/37729675/services.jar
A few more things to keep in mind; you HAVE to adb push this (to /system/framework/) or you'll end up bootlooping your phone, before you adb push it make sure you have data and data roaming enabled in settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks (because you won't be able to access this after you push the new services.jar), this is ONLY good for the current OpenZIO ROM, and BACK UP YOUR SERVICES.JAR FILE IN CASE YOU F**K IT UP.

If you aren't having a problem, I wouldn't flash it, and remember the nandroid!

Hey so do you think you can elaborate on what exactly this does?
On first glance it looks like it is having the GPS refresh much more rapidly (therefore consuming more battery life I'm guessing).
Is this the only thing this mod does?
Yes, how is the battery life with this?

I can't comment on battery life at this point. I'm going to use GPS on Monday evening and will report back. I expect it may drain the battery more while using GPS, but for me, the trade off of more polling is worth it.
The update.zip simply replaces the CM7 GPS driver with the driver found in the Gingerbread leak. I can't speak to the changes in the HTC driver, because I've not seen the code (probably wouldn't do much good for me to see it anyway), and the source is not released.
If you are not having a problem, I wouldn't flash it.
I'm curious how this turns out, since I've noticed the same thing with RunKeeper lately. I don't think it has a negative effect on my total mileage, but every once in a while the accuracy goes completely wonky and it can't give me an accurate reading of my pace at the moment.
I had my days mixed up, today isn't a run day.
I wanted to get some initial results though, so I did do a quick run. GPS seems to have a higher polling/refresh/whatever it's called rate. The only thing I did was flash this update.zip.
Tomorrow I go for a 40 minute run so I'll have a better idea on how it hits the battery. I just went 5 minutes today, so it didn't really do anything.
So far, seems to be good. No more corners being cut off!
I'll have to keep my eye on this, when I was running sense roms maps was able to be able to track me with pinpoint accuracy, with cm7 it seems off by a few yards. Not a lot but enough to say im in my backyard when i'm in my bedroom or my neighbors front yard when i'm in my kitchen. If I can get that lock I got in sense with cm7 i'll be a happy camper.
Curious as well
I have noticed issues with GPS being off 5-10 yards as well. I ad recently flashed back to 7.28 radio which seemed to help initially or so I thought. I noticed it off about 10 yards on golf apps.
Looking forward to how this turns out

Nice. I'll have to flash this...
Is this something that I will need to flash every time I update to a new nightly?
Subscribing to this, Thanks OP!

Yup, sounds like it
Just got done with a 35 minute run, GPS is working much better for me. I have an 8 month old 1500mAh TP2 battery. It dropped 6% in 35 minutes (screen off the whole time, just using runkeeper), which does not appear to be better or worse on the battery to me than the stock CM7 GPS driver.
If you are flashing this driver, you will have to re-flash it after flashing CM7.
I haven't tested accuracy, I can only say that it has increased the blue dots on my run keeper map which is what I wanted.
Thanks for looking into this. I've noticed that my tracks has been working poorly lately for me. Sometimes it even skips parts of my course altogether. Some of this may be due to the terrain (I use it for MTB ) but I never noticed it when I was using the stock rom. Ill try it out and report back if anything gets better.

I look forward to hearing if it helps you or anyone else.
None of this was my idea, I just saw what other people had done on the evo and applied the idea to our phone.

Yeah, this helped me. Maps is smoother, and MyTracks is insanely smooth! No noticeable difference in battery use either.
Just got finished with my evening ride and it seems my tracks is working perfectly as far as smooth maps. I did notice something odd however, my tracks reported almost one mile more than the odometer on my bike computer! The first two miles were right on and then it seems something went wrong. Ill have to try it with a known distance and see which one is the culprit.

Very odd. Please let us know what you find.

Did a quick walk this morning to get breakfast and I notice that it polls a lot more. Good job, k_flan!
Ok, I've tried it a couple more times and I'm confident the error was in the bike computer. I may have bumped the magnet attached to the wheel at some point and that's what threw off the readings. Everything looks good now, thanks for this!

Glad you got it sorted and it wasn't something crazy caused from flashing this.
