When you lay the note down on it's back... - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does the camera touch the surface? Is the camera and lens cover recessed behind the battery cover?
I want to use the phone caseless, but there's no way I'm gonna let my camera lens get scratched.

Yes if you are using the stock cover, no if you are using the included flip cover.

The flip cover isn't always included with the Note (mine wasn't), but is an absolute must in my opinion! I hadn't even noticed that there was a recess on the flip cover, but not on the original back.
Regards,
Dave

Must be a regional thing, in my place its packaged by samsung as part of the purchase.

Well that sucks. Why the heck would Samsung do that? It's not gonna make me buy their flip cover or anything.

The back for the flip cover is necessarily thicker than the original back cover to allow for the "flip" to connect to it, which is why the camera is recessed whilst in it.

Dave

What confuses me is why Samsung put the camera lens higher than the original back cover in the first place. Could they have not put a lip just around the camera module? *sigh*

there is a physical limitation to what they can and cant do. if you want the camera recessed, you would need to increase the thickness of the phone. the slimness of the phone is one of the reasons why the phone still fits in most pockets despite its large screen.
by launching the flip cover and the device as separate items, they can still claim the device is slim, and still have the option of a recessed camera.
putting a lip around the camera model increases the device's thickness. cant really recess the camera into the case anymore due to the physical size of the camera unit and the amoled display. since the camera unit in our device partially behind the screen, not too much they can do. whereas with the iphone, the camera is in a corner which is not directly behind the screen, giving them a bit more room to play with.
samsung arent miracle workers. even they can only pack in so much.

Big difference: With and without backcover!

Hey people, look at these 2 pictures, that I just have taken:
With the backcover on:
http://www.4shared.com/file/53179104/2a29789d/Med_cover.html
And without:

As you can see, there is a big difference. Hmm, why haven't HTC done something to this problem?
Are you sure you were at the same distance?
And what about the focus point? It seems a bit different between the 2 pics.....

Yes I'm very sure about that. I have tried with more pictures.
did you stick a 'lense protector' on the cover's lense screen? like if you stuck on a full body protector like invisibleSHIELD there'll be a piece for the lense cover too.
Or, did you forget to peel off the original one?

Haha, no i'm not that stupid Nothing "protection" is on.
the "lens" that is part of the back cover is obviously not optically neutral. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Without the back cover, the Diamond takes decent pictures, still slow on focusing and shutter release(you should see the Samsung F480, this little fellow shoots pictures almost like a normal digital cam) but pretty good for a 3.2 MP cam.
WITH back cover however, the pictures look like crap to me. Sometimes it looks like if the pictures have been taken through light fog and I can clean the lens cover as much as I want(not easy, tiny little bastard), after some time, the lens gets dirty/whatever again. Horrible, HTC definetely needs to find a better solution.

well ideally you should or you should remember not to put you fingers on the lens (not an easy task given the camera position i know) but lets be fair here, i mean its not as if you would take your stand alone digital camera, smear you greasy hands over the lens all day (+ let dust collect on it) and then expect it to take perfect pics...
be practical, if you remove the case screen for long you are gonna end up with scratches on the actual camera lens! and that's not easily replaceable now is it (not like the back cover...) lol

What we need is a back cover with a piece of glass in place of the piece of plastic which covers the lense.
This seems like the only solution to me.
Its because the plastic isnt very durable, it does mist up the photos. If you look on coolsmartphone.com ive also took some pictures and they looked alot better without the back plastic cover on.
I just hope someone somewhere is reading this as i would pay for a back cover with glass instead of plastic lense cover.
The pictures are alot sharper and arent misty without the cover on.

Your right!
white balance
Granted the backcover lens protector doesn't do justice to this phone. Adjusting the white balance does for improvement (say the lighhtbulb mode) I find. Again the camera does let this phone down, compared to others of similar spec. Can a software tweak solve the lag in motion when shooting in video mode at all? Is it as a 'simple' case as that I wonder!?
I just did some test shots with my xda diamond from germany and I honestly cant see a difference. can you tell which one is taken with the cover off?

Modding your Camera Lens

I'd like to say Thank You to everyone in this forum and providing such a great site for us. I am very admire all yours talent that I wish I have, but I don't. I did I a little mod to my Tilt camera lens and it came out good and I'd like to share it with you all. This mod require no drilling to original lens and look oem.
1. A piece of Micro Slice Glass. 20 cents
(used for microscope, you can get it from science store)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039158/
2. Knife sharpening stone, fine gain.
3. Glass cutting tool $6
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039484/
4. Qtip
5. Double side tape
Instruction:Sorry I don't know how to attach pictures into my post. Have to link it to Flickr. Hope you don't mind.
-To remove the lens, use a Qtip & push the lens out from the back side of the cover, use your figure nail to lift the lens out from the chrome frame.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2913195413/in/photostream/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914041602/in/photostream/
-Use the lens to mark the size onto the Micro Slice Glass and cutting it with the glass cutting tools, you may need to try a few time to have a straight cut. http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039158/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914039484/
-Now you have the piece cut out, here the fun part. use a sharpening stone and work near the sink cause you need to wet the stone during the sanding.
while sanding the new lens, use the original lens to check the shape. I made my a bit bigger then the original so it can be fit in tight without using any glue. Double side tape used just for insurance purposes.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914080332/
-Here the final product.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/2914250782/
-That's it folks, this is the best and the cheapest and the oem look camera lens mod ever. Here some shots I took before and after. Let me know what you think. Pictures are in order, original lens->Moded Lens->no cover.

I don't know how many kaisers are out in the market but a manufacturer in the far-east (due to cost) can make such back cover with integrated fixed lens in the cost of ~$0.10 (go for worst case 1$) each and I'm sure most of us are willing to pay... lets say $15 each ? so here is a win-win opportunity waiting for an entrepreneur.
I did a similar yet cheaper fix.
Pop out the stock lens.
Cut some plastic (used the package some RAM for my pc came in)
Use the double sided tape and place it there. It's not that noticable but the picture quality improves a great amount.
Great mod, just took my back cover off and the picture is much better. I'm going to try just removing the cover altogether.
Lol, this is so much nicer than my ghetto fix! I had just popped out the plastic lens cover (and succeeded in breaking the little chrome-painted piece in the process, of course) and put a little piece of extra screen protector over the actual lens to protect it from the dust and what not.
Gotta' try this!
my lil camera lens cracked so i removed it and it has been off for over a month. i dont really have issues with debris getting under the battery cover. besides, its not hard to remove the back and clean it with my shirt and put it back on
nice, I will have to try this
You really can notice the difference. I just quickly take the back cover off, take a photo and then put it back on. I really notice the difference now. Thanks heaps!!!!
Thanks for the info... from now on, when I want to take a picture, I'll remove the back cover
I was thinking of doing this mod but using glass designed for optics instead of standard glass. A quick web search found http://www.astraproducts.com/i_ptsheet.asp. Are there any photography experts out there who know if this type of glass work any better than standard glass?
Also, if someone (possibly myself) were to bulk purchase pieces of optical glass "pre-machined" to fit as a replacement to the tilt, would there be much interest in purchasing these? I suppose it would all depend on cost and I have no idea what the cost would be, but maybe worth looking into.
This is just my opinion, but I see no point in going through the trouble of modding a phone that was never really meant to be used primarily as a camera.
I think this makes even less sense when you take in to account the fact that it performs really bad in certain conditions.

My reason for the mod is because the lense on my back cover is cracked right down the middle so the camera hardly works at all. Replacement covers run $50-$60 so I'm looking for a less expensive fix. I don't really want to remove the lense entirely because of allowing dust into the case and also the actual camera lense would be exposed and liable to scratch.

My back cover won't snap on properly

I've owned other samsung phones and didn't have a problem snapping those on. For some reason however, three of the snap points on the side with the notch opening will not snap into place no matter how much I push down. I attached a photo. There are six snap points. The top two around the notch opening and the bottom one snaps on easily, but the three in-between do not, causing a nice hump. I've tried fiddling with the snaps on the back cover, but honestly you can't really move them from what I can tell, since there's nothing to move. Tried pushing them one way or another with pliers, but its really wishful thinking that it changed anything. So what am I doing wrong? I'm not 100% sure if the back cover was snapped on completely when I took it off the back for the first time, but I have never been able to snap those three points, ever. Also tried to take a picture of the back cover snaps but all my pics are blurry.
katamari201, I would suggest you refrain from toying around with the back cover thus avoiding a possible physical damage. I also suggest you take it to your nearest authorized Samsung service centre. If your device is still within the warranty period, you can get a replacement cover without bearing any charge.

Took me this long to finally figure out how to snap the two clips in. Yes the design is defective, liable for improper finishes to screw it all up. LIke I said, I never had too many issues with previous galaxy snap on back covers, but this one was a doozy. Had two clips un-snapped for the longest time using original cover. Bought a metallic blue cover that won't snap on properly period, goes in and pops right back out, on all but the bottom side, which I didn't snap into place I just tucked into the holes.
Decided to try properly snapping all the clips on the original cover again. Lots of pushing down and thinking the phone will break. I finally did it, and it was REALLY LOUD snap for those two or three clips. They were not normal. Had to put the phone face down on my palm, insert the cover at an angle pushing heavily down on the side where the unsnappable clips were, and pushing the side heavily down while bending the rest of it upwards, forcing it at an angle. THe usual snap on bottom and move upwards on both sides all the way to the top did not apply for those two clips, whereas everything else snapped on easily, so I had to do those two clips first, and do them at an angle and bend the cover upward to make a large angle, because just pushing down on it when the cover is flat on the back will do absolutely nothing and basically be on the road to breaking the phone. The aftermarket metallic cover wouldn't even stay in any of the holes, just popped right back out. I really hate this snap on design. Samsung needs to learn to make deeper snaps or use a slide on design, and there is plenty of room for that since the chrome sides are so thick anyway.
Ugh I am so tired of poor samsung build quality. The note uses the same scratchable chrome sides as the S2, same cheap back and weak snap-on design. There's a reason why all the Samsung phones at my local AT&T have tape on the back along the battery seam.

Battery/back may not be such a problem.

They did. Did you see this thread?
It's just that "you can get a particularly sized torx screwdriver and remove the back, then there are a couple more screws holding the battery in place. If you're very careful, (be sure to wear an anti-static wristband) you can replace the battery. Though it may void the warranty." has never really met the standard of "replaceable battery" when it comes to most users. By this standard, the iPhone's battery is replaceable; in fact, by the looks of it, my iPhone 4's battery is slightly easier to replace; not only because it uses Philips screw heads, but there's less to remove in the phone itself.
This is very good to know!

Replacement
Well at least we know it won't be too difficult to replace the back housing if needed to!
So I'm assuming that those two screws on the silver bit just above the battery are they key to take out the battery?
so... does that mean we can basically get a back cover without the coil (wireless charging) and make the phone slimmer?
I might even try to replace the glass with a shade of grey aluminium.

The back cover contains the GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas, so any replacement backs would need the same antennas and contact points. The cell antenna is at the bottom of the phone rather than being on the back cover so that is okay. The charging and NFC coils are on the back cover as well. So any replacement or after market back cover is going to cost quite a bit and will need to be well made. If you replace the back cover with metal, then you will end up with poor GPS and Wi-Fi signals, if they work at all.
The charging coil is already recessed in the back. If you look at the back cover, the plastic is cut away and the charging coil sits in flush up against the glass back.
We can also see hot spots, presumably the processor and other hot components. Loot at the phone in the picture, towards the top right hand side is a foil covered square (I assume this is the S4 processor), and just up to the left of it are some components, these are exposed through the black plastic cover which goes over most of the motherboard. Now look at the back cover, in matching positions are cutaways where we can the back of the patterned glass. So the processor and other hot components sit up as close to the glass as possible to help cool. It's a shame that the glass is an insulator though, although so is plastic and the glass is very thin, so the phone fairs no worse than anything else.

The HTC One X has a similar arrangement of antennas and NFC on the back cover and that cost in the UK around £28.00 via Ebay. The Nexus though has the Gorilla Glass on the back which may make it cost more or hopefully cost less. If there is a big market for replacement backs because the glass is getting broken a lot, that would mean more are made as spare parts reducing costs and more places would supply them, driving prices lower due to competition. We wait and see

That foil covered square is almost certain not the S4, that one sits on the other side of the PCB.

Thanks for the link. Hard to see what that raised area relates to on those pictures. Odd the processor is the other side sandwiched in the phone, and lets hope that isn't the cause of alleged thermal throttling causing low speeds. On phones like the HTC One X the processor is against the back with a large area of copper foil to dissipate heat, although the S4 has the benefit of being 28nm.
Looking at different FCC photos and knowing it isn't the processor, it must be some sort of power regulation circuitry.

DIY smart case possible for Moto G 2?

I was wondering why official case of moto G is at 1700 Rs. I though it is only brand and may be better build quality.
So, I just went with some local case with around 400 Rs.
Later I came to know two features of official moto G.
1. It has hall effect sensor. What it does, when case is open, it switch on display and when case is closed, it switch off. How it does it, there is small magnet in case. When case is closed, magnetic field detected by hall effect sensor which switch off display. When open, magnetic field removed and display on.
2. It has magnetic snap. So, magnet in case stick to mobile to keep it close.
I bought small magnet half the size of button. I checked the phone reacting when magnet is placed near phone for both the effect. But what I found, there are two locations for each effect.
I have attached snap for that.
Can anybody using offcial case confirm that my observation and marked location is correct?
If so, I may try to make my cheap cover acting like official smart cover with small magnets I have.

The outer side of flip cover which covers the screen has a metal sheet
and there is some magnet at the back side of the cover.

Ok...I am lost a bit.
Can anybody say what that shiny square at back is exactly and what role does it play?
and @TouGHBoY17, can you tell where is the exact location of magnet in cover by placing small pin near it?
It think it is not an easy DIY for making this cover because when I Remove the flip cover and put the front cover on the screen and remove it from the screen it lights up automatically even if have not fitted the cover. If I place the front side of the cover vertically upside down on the phone and then remove it there is no change

What you are telling makes the task easy.
That means it has nothing to do with back cover.
There shall be some magnetic media in front cover at right side middle which enables hall effect sensor. See my snap in OP.
I have tested it with small magnet and it does work.
Just want to confirm if same thing happen in original moto cover also.
So, I asked to check that magnetic field with small pin in front cover.
Ok I found the location is in eight down side easiest way to find that lactation is look at the right back side of your phone you can see the pattern to hold the cover near the screw at back edge side it is that location where the magnet is placed on the phone flip cover and the magnet is very strong
