My contact at Microsoft has indicated to me that an OEM ARM version of Windows 8 is not in the works. It will be unlikely that you will be able to purchase a copy of Windows 8 at a store and simply install it on any tablet you would like. That will not stop us from attempting to do this from a rip of a device that comes preinstalled with it though.
Also, I was told that the PC manufacturers will be rolling out the first Windows 8 devices in June 2012, and the ARM devices should follow shortly afterwards.
By next summer, with some luck, we may be able to BEGIN working on Windows 8 for the Touchpad.

Thanks for this info, and I believe you are the same one that posts videos on youtube.. they really helped me get my touchpad set up.
I'm guessing we'll have to wait until a "jailbreak" method comes about for these upcoming windows 8 tablets to dump the OS off of them. Second, I'm also guessing drivers will be scarce for the touchpad. Since this clearly falls under piracy (the only solution will involve torrenting a ripped windows 8 arm image since they won't sell it OEM), some developers may hesitate to work on it publicly and share that info, so that will make this process a lot less open than android.
Because of the firesale, though, the touchpad may still be popular enough of a device that it can be done. I hope so, but I'm a little iffy on if its technically piracy.

didnt it say somewhere that ARM beta is supposed to drop around february?
would give the devs something to play meanwhile..
but as we have moboot now, which is constantly developed further too.. I believe we have a real chance to see Win8 on TP one day..
and maybe other companies will start supporting ARM more too? would be nice to see..

i would be sad if this developement would have to go underground..
{{{i have never got terminal commands to work atall ..
example.. when instructions say to add to commands and show line by line..
i assume that im sposed to hit enter after each line .. if i dont get error.. im done and hit exit to close the terminal but
changes have never taken effect..}}}
so i am used to the windows format..
thanx

According to the Microsoft keynote they will have Windows 8 running on ARM devices. This can't come soon enough. I want to get webos off my touchpad an run win8 sooooo bad. Glad I jumped the webos ship to windows phone; really loving it.

There's no guarantee this will happen, and even if it does it probably won't be legal.
If it did it would be great though, this thing is the new HD2

Windows 8 ARM tablets will effectively kill the Android tablet market if OpenMobile's ACL works as-advertised and can be easily acquired and ported to any Windows 8 tablet system, as there would be little point in running native Android anymore.
sacbee.com/2012/01/09/4173389/300000-android-apps-run-on-any.html

On an ARM version of Windows it should be possible to create a program that runs Android apps. It should be pretty fast since the processor wouldn't have to be emulated (ARM on ARM), just like Virtualbox, etc can run sandboxed x86 OSes on x86 systems.
But Windows 8 ARM will not run any old Windows programs and it may not come with Explorer at all only the new tile based menu system. Windows 8 x86/64 will be able to switch between the old Explorer and the new tile based system.
I would love to see Windows 8 ported, but would rather have a stable port of ICS instead.

I've read that MS recently updated their "quasi VM". So they already have the possibility to run Android Apps.. as well as BB on their Playbook.

I think just 1 thing:
DON'T BUY VISTA.....and if anyone give you Vista as a gift then throw them back or sell them away
if u like Windows, then Windows XP is the only way to stay in peace...
but i advise that Vista is only a hole...a hole in performances, a hole in our wallett (if u buy vista premium, a big hole for nothing) and a big hole in personal security...i think this is not a OS but a rootkit....
Have you seen this thread?
There is a link there to a podcast about vista. What all the security will do to speed and stability of your system.
My conclusion:
If the consumers are smart enough Vista will die.
Also:
XP and other windows versions owe their popularity in large part to the fact that there are plenty of cracked versions.
If vista doesn't get cracked (mainly cause no one bothers to put in the effort) it won't gain popularity.
lol... Vista was cracked before it was released! I agree though, I've got it installed and it's just not worth it at all... I use pc mainly for creating audio and Vista's put a huge dent in audio processing. My very expensive professional soundcard is pretty much useless as M$ now say that they've decided the way everyone's been routing sound to cards is now not in their plans and they'd like Vista to take on the responsibility - yeah, well, it's pretty poor Bill... maybe you should leave this kinda stuff up to the professionals???!!!
It's all down to Vista's supposed "Security Features", but I've read a lot of reports outlining the hole's in it, basically saying it's completely meaningless. It causes problems with Networking, Audio, and performance that just can't be justified. He's gone and released it WAY before it's ready, same as always. Users will be inundated with updates until finally it starts working like XP now does, by which time he'll have another official part-release ready on the market.
Stay clear of Vista for now if you use your PC for anything more than word processing
Anything M$ related check out http://www.mydigitallife.info/ Excellent site!
P.S.... a guy on this forum has as his signature ""Microsoft". Nice of Bill to name the company after his manhood". Thought that was quite apt

no to kick off a huge flamer between PC's, Macs & Linux freaks.. however..

The ad on tv with the mac and pc is misleading and I'm ticked. I tried to replace a HD on an iBook... wow! Good thing I have a COMPUTER SCIENCE degree. 2.5 hours just to get to the hard drive. Why? because they want more money from you.
Anyway, I am actually pretty excited about getting vista for one of my computers.

I am not sure what ad it is you are referring to, and I don't mean to sound rood but is the time it takes to replace a part relay the driving consideration in what type of computer to get?
And even if so what does that have to do with the OS?
I may not have a degree but I open my PC every 6 month or so, if not to add / change component then just to dust it out and given the amount of peripherals connected to it, it can take 10 minutes just to unplug and then plug back all the cables (two of the big non USB annoyances are UPS status and capture card IR that use serial connectors).
At any rate, I understand the whole "I am switching to Mac / Linux etc." rants. And sorry I don't want to insult anybody but lets face it: in most cases you're just gonna stick with your XP box because getting used to a new OS is not a simple matter. (We have a MAC, don't remember specific model, at work and I got to play with it a couple of times - shortage of mouse buttons drove me crazy How can you live without 'right click'???)
But seriously you may not be switching right now but the point of it all is that there are viable (if not as popular) alternatives to M$ crap regardless of hardware architecture and that is a very comforting thought.
P.S. Here is what I can tell you about my experience with Vista:
We put a Beta on one of the stations at work (it came with our MSDN subscription). The Pentium 4 2.4GHz 258 MB machine ran at a tolerable speed (though I now know it wasn't quite up to specs for this OS), but after a week we needed it for doing real work so it was formatted back to XP.
I have tested on AthlonXP 2500+, 1 Gb ram DDR 400 MHz, Geforce FX5600 Ultra, and after a week of testing I've determined that it works 2-3 times slower than XP, i will not sacrifice performance over crappy security, silly GUI effects and poor compatiblity
My mother in law (a non technical person) just bought a new laptop pre loaded with vista. She complained that it works much worse than her old xp laptop and decided to just take it back for a refund.
I hope the same thing happens a million times and all those refunds will out weight the gains they are hoping for in cornering the drm video market.
The evil in vista is just a sign of the wider decay in American civil liberties. I normally would not care but now thanks to America pushing wipo onto Australia in order to get a trade deal, all that American evil is heading my way.
I do not think copyright crimes should be criminal offenses. Vista, DRM, DMCA, RIAA and so call anti terror laws are crushing ordinary people. They use copyright as a door into peoples lives to persecute them for any other thing they can find along the way.
I would like to see an open source p2p searchable anonymous adhoc wireless network program. That way free people around the world could create and grow an alternate network to rival the internet that no one could use to slam someone in jail. Each users copy of the program could be compiled with a unique identifier that lets it be addressed over the network but in no way ties in to their real identity. If enough people used it it could work, some with enough protection could set up gateways into the real internet to join the two networks.
This may sound stupid now but IMO lack of anonymity in ip based networks will eventually spell the end of them.
what kind of world do we live in where a person needs to run oftware from an encrypted volume within a virtual pc on a pc with ip blocking software and software and hardware firewalls just to feel that big brother won't be able to get at your stuff when they secretly break into your house and ransack it while your at work (as they are allowed to do in Aus under anti terror laws). Seriously!

vista on my old C64
to break his rock-solid security
May be it's not time for go to VISTA, wait for SP maybe 6th will fix this, and I tested it with Vista on PC, core 2 duo (errr forgot the speed coz it's office PC), than other PC with same spec run on XP, who the XP performance far better...
Weird, I have 3 machines running Windows Vista Ultimate and are working great, 1 Dell Inspiron(Intel Centrino, 1GB ram), 1 Sony VAIO(Pentium 4 512Mb ram) and 1 PC (AMD, 1Gb ram), all of you, did you change the performance in control panel? Maybe that is your slow Vista....All my drivers are OK...
And all are Vista Cra**ed.....
Speaking of drivers... Microsoft have recommended to device manufacturers/driver writers to avoid creating unified device drivers while at the same time shipping vista with unified drivers. What hypocrisy. They reserve the right to automatically revoke your drivers at any time, with the potential of bricking your machine but don't even follow their own guidelines set out to avoid large scale simultaneous revocations.
One reason it runs slow is that once every millisecond (1000th of a second) vista checks every component to see if it is secure (for drm). This is a lot to be doing on a permanent basis. Its not the only reason it runs slow, because vista is over time learning the patterns of usage for an individual it starts to try and keep a lot of stuff loaded in memory. This is not a bad thing but unless you have 3-4 gig it dose not function as well leading to a slow down.
I just don't like the direction all this drm is going. For me it has little to do with piracy and more to do with freedom. I do not want to be living in a time where a book can be revoked so that it can no longer be read because a government or dictator has decided to use drm to control public opinion. I want to live in a time where competition decides what survives in the market place and not drm/dmca monopolies.
XP works very well there is no reason to change (to vista).

It doesn't mean too too much. It basically means that Apple is THOUGHT to be more profitable and a smarter investment. Microsoft still nets more in the long run. And don't worry about the dominant OS, that's not even CLOSE.

Market cap is a contruct of the stock market. Apple will not be bigger in:
User base
# of employees
Gross revenues
The market loves Apple, it hates Microsoft. There are numerous reasons, but market cap is not really a number that I feel holds a great deal of water in calculating company size. Just ask Enron - market cap has a funny way of being able to fluctuate quickly...

Mac's price point will ALWAYS mean that they will never, ever take over Windows.
Why in your right mind would you spend $2000+ to get a mac when you could get better hardware for the same or lower price.

Android Desktop OS

Some of you have been following this for a very long time, you have seen the changes and many alterations I have gone through. But now, Android on the desktop has reach a very serious status about itself and it is turning into a powerhouse beast of an OS.
Let me start by saying that Android Desktop does have an official name, we just have not released it yet, so for now, we are sticking to Android Desktop OS.
I am going to be short and clean about what is going on. What we are doing with Android is nothing short of damn amazing, we have turned Android into a 64 / 32 bit, Intel and AMD powered, rebuilding from the ground up, new feature rich, all app redesigned, new kernel, synced platformed environment, with a lot of new things which will be added in the future.
Me and the lead developer have been working and mapping every corner of this out for well over a year, every small detail, every brand new thing we must add to Android, adding all new systems and mechanisms to bring out the full power of a desktop.
I must state this as strongly as possible, this is not a patch, not a port or any bad attempt by the likes of which others have done. This is the real deal, real power, real love and thought put into this OS. Totally rebuilt in a way no one has thought of yet. Every default app has been redesigned for the desktop, all UI, all screens, notifications, settings and everything are beautifully redesigned to burn your cornea when you see it.
The kernel is a powerhouse. This will do partitions, read HDDs, SSDs and other drives properly, newly implemented mouse and keyboard systems and just so so so much more that we have planned for this, things I can't even talk about.
I just can't wait to have you see what is coming, this is about to change so much in the tech world. I repeat, this IS the real deal.
I will leave you with some teasers of what is going on, just to pique your interest as well as I can, also keep in mind there are a lot of things not show for particular reasons.
And last but not least, we are always keeping an eye out for serious developers who are interested in building the future.
If you have any skills related to the following please contact us here or on G+:
C, C++, Assembly, Bash, Gnu make, Gcc compiler, JVM, Building run-time environments, Kernel, Android roms, Linux from scratch, Unix, Intel/amd architecture , Porting to and from arm, Building operating system.

stupid google, use this, android with this look for desktopnis better than chrome os, + you could use all apps from market, buy them, better than no apps in chrome os, i would love a skin like this for windows, or an android desktop system, mobile browsers are better than windows browser

I apologize then
If I knew how to theme, I would, but I am definitely offering someone to do this for Linux or anything else. I wish I could do more with it, but all I can do is photoshop pictures together.
I am messaging those that work at google on GooglePlus, lets see how this works.
Very impressive all the best for your hard work. Liked it and hope others will like it as well.

Yeah thats what I dont understand, android is beaming left and right, has alot of potential and they do a Chrome os
As I said, if I knew how to write code, I would blend a Linux and Android x86 type together, allow some Windows files to be used, well mainly games and what not, but still.
I wish someone here on XDA could pull a group together and start this, I would lead the art idea side.
Am I allowed to bump this?
Willing to start
first off, sorry to bump the thread :/. So as far as i know the apps on a android phone work on a java platform, so technically you could take the android tablet OS and convert it (i know that's not easy) to desktop, and kick win 8 ass. However its java, its process intensive and not the most fun.
This looks really cool... impressive and amazing... *speechless

They are working on that AIO pc thing with the new haswell chips. Which I am hoping isnt the mobile chip, instead the desktop chip. But I think that stands at like 10% and there was a rumor that (not acer) but there would be Android laptops sometime this year, you will just have to google that one, but if so, it could mean that Android will get off of arm chips or whatever it is on.
Edit: Nvm here is the google link for android laptops.

If anyone would like to start up this project email me. [email protected] I would really like to see this beautiful idea come to life. I think if we look at android 86 and fork there os.

[Q] iOS on KFHD 7" | Possible?

Hello,
been quite a long time, since my last Android device, but now I´m back again. A few years ago I was really amazed, when it was possible to run Android and iOS simultaneously on a iPhone 2G. This is why I´m asking whether it is possible (or maybe anybody already did) to run iOS on the KFHD. The reason why I have that idea is, because it´d make it much smoother to integrate the KFHD into my existing Apple "eco"-system and just to play around.
And please don´t say "buy an iPad" or whatever... if we´d like to run our devices just as they were assembled and sold, you and I won´t be here on xda ?
Thank you

You do realise that iOS is not open source right? Technically the kernel sources were supposed to be published but apple found a loophole and didn't want to publish them last I heard, but yea the os itself isn't open source.

You wouldn't want it, why ? Because of good ol' linux.
´cause I´m happy with Mac.
And yes...I ran every possible system on my machines...MacBook Pro with Win/OSX and PC with Hackintosh/Win/Linux. Also Windows Mobile, iOS and Android. OSX and iOS is what I´m most productive with.

I don't mind the IOS but only IPod/IPhone 3rd generation or lower, Because they can run Android (not very stable).
One question.
Of all of you who are dissing the OP, his/her idea, and iOS itself, how many of you actually tried it? And by try it, I don't mean glance at your friends iPhone and called it crap. How many of you have used it for at least a week, integrating iOS into your digital life? I've got two Android devices, as well as an iPod touch running iOS 7, and believe it or not, I like it. Sure, I don't like Apple's walled garden ecosystem, but it's no different than Amazon locking down our own Kindles.
I digress, but my point is, don't knock it until you try it. We are a community of developers, and our main goal is to make our devices better in ways the original developers didn't. If one person decides he wants port iOS to our Kindles, who are we to judge him? Even if it isn't possible, what reason it's that to ridicule him/her?
As much as I love it here at XDA,I have to admit that I am a bit ashamed of the single-mindedness that Android is superior to all mobile operating systems (yes we have forums for some others, but still).

[Q] How to root Asus Memo Pad 7 (me176c/me176cx) 2014 version

Hello, I just recently bought the Asus memo pad 7 and have been looking on how to root the device. This model is different from the 2013 model which is the me173x. I have the me176cx, which is Intel based. I was going to use the framaroot app but it isn't officially supported and there aren't any posts about this model since it recently came out within the last month. So I'm pretty much asking if anyone has ever rooted the device? It's on android 4.4.2 too. Thanks.
Just bought the same device, want to root too. Tried UnlockRoot, didn't work.

I recently bought a Asus Memo Pad ME176cx, KitKat 4.4.2. The microSD card I bought for it is nearly useless because the OS prevents most apps from writing to the microSD. *grrrr*
I want to store dictionaries and maps on the microSD. I'll give up some security for the convenience of having more and removable storage. Google & Asus, are you listening, do you care at all?
Any workarounds I have read about require rooting.
I really want to root this thing soon.
On the 4.4 Google removed the permissions to apps write in SD.
Unfortunately, can't find any root to the device.
I'd like root for this device as well. It's not as necessary as you'd expect but I like full control of my systems and devices. Should we start a bounty?
I hope someone root this device. I need to put my apps in the sd card.
I wish you guys all the luck in busting open this device. It was a nice tablet except for being locked down. Unfortunately my solution was to return the MP7 and buy a refurb Nexus 7. If the MP7 gets root and CyanogenMod, I'll get one and give my wife the Nexus.
Don't worry guys. Like in every new tech one has to analyse and test solutions.
It's not impossible. I have the same tablet. Bought it on Staples for €160.
I believe it will be the future of tablets. judging by these antutu benchmarks:

Funny that ASUS have no details of how to install CE on it anywhere on the support site. Not that I'd go down that path anyway - throwing WinMobile on it gives you less chance of full system control than what you get from gaining root with Android...
All good, a bit of patience will get Towelroot working with the new changes to the Android kernels, and we'll be happy again...

Why thank you djshotty but you see, Staples hasn't ripped me off. My government did. All because we have a stupid law in Portugal that whatever you buy, has an enviroment tax plus VAT plus whatever Staples ask for, plus the gas/tires i spent to get to the store equals €160. (Yes, I can add)...
I know, i know, you bought it online (i presume). But the thing is, I hate buying stuff online. Most especialy if the store is in another country. All because if something goes wrong with the delivery, you can go ask sainta for a new (in this case) tablet... That said, I don't think it was a rip off considering what I said above.

You obviously only read the bit about you getting your tablet at a much higher price than I paid, yet not taking any notice of my comment that I purchased the item from a retail store, over the counter, off the shelf and in my hands immediately. JB Hi-Fi are one of Australia's biggest retailers of electronics and media (CD's, DVD's, BluRay). Enjoy the device, mate, because once we get 'root access' and rid it of all the rubbish included with the stock firmware we'll have a powerhouse for minimal outlay...
KingoRoot(http://www.kingoapp.com/)
someone tried to quest softwares x the root?
I can not xche and in order
Kingo doesn't work, or at least it didn't as of my previous post in this thread.
Also looking for a root method
I just ordered one of these myself and am hoping for a root method. I've read that sometimes Asus actually post a way to fully unlock the bootloader (eventually) on their site because with tablets there are no carriers involved and they don't care if you do this especially as it voids your warranty and basically gives them a free pass if sometime stops working later. Not sure if this will actually happen for this device but would be nice.
Otherwise, hoping some brilliant minded android dev out there figures out a way....

Same as you, cos there's a heap of bloatware in the stock ROM that I'm hopeful of keeping away from my seven year old daughter. Not only that, but the bloatware takes away from the full RAM bandwidth and processor power, even after disabling those apps in Settings...
Just picked one up from Amazon for $135. I have every confidence that before long the geniuses at this fine forum will have this pretty little tablet rooted and kicking a** before long. With a quad core atom, yes, it will be a power house. First, the bloat ware will go away, then a month or two later Cyanogenmod will be running on it with nightly's.
