Difference between a Boot-Loop, Semi-Brick, and a full Brick
Boot-Loop
Q. What is a Boot-Loop?
A. A boot loop is when your phone is stuck on the "ANDROID" screen when u first boot your phone (after the G1 screen or the My Touch screen). This occurs when something you have flashed went bad or interfeared with something you already had installed.
Solution:
1. Turn off your phone
2. Enter Recovery (Hold HOME while holding the POWEr button)
3. Choose from the following:
- Install a rom you KNOW works. Such as the latest cyanogenROM or the rom you have been preivously using
or
- Make a full wipe of your SD Card an phone and flash your update again
Semi-Brick
Q. What is a Semi-Brick?
A. A Semi-Brick is when your phone wont boot at all. The only thing is, you still have access to the recovery and/or fastboot menu
Solution:
Brick
Q. What is a Brick?
A. A Brick is when your phone wont boot at all. This time, you DO NOT have access to the recovery AND fastboot menu. Basically, your phone is a paper weight.
Solution:
You can try this fix here which requires a Donor G1 to work:

......Android opens .apks, you would need androzip to extract a zip file. Linda will only open .apks to install..
Nicely done, as usual.
Would this guide be the same if I was using Super D as the rom?

No need to panic. As long as you can access the Blue Android Logo, you are fine.
Please list, step by step, what you did (including ROM Version Numbers).
Also - you might want to try flashing/wiping your phone. That seems to take care of many issues, but I'd still like to see what you did.

[Q] Can't 'install zip from sd card' Help!

Hi all,
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S I9000, but I don't have the stock Live Wallpapers.
Now I wanna install/do this:
"First place SamsungLWP.zip on the root of your SDcard (plug your phone into your computer and transfer the samsungLWP.zip to your phone's sdcard)
1. Go into rom manager and reboot into recovery
2. scroll down to install zip from sd card and press the power button
3. scroll down choose zip from SD card again hit power button
4. highlight signed SamsungLWPs.zip
5. Hit power button
6. Go back until you get to the reboot option I think back twice Reboot phone
7. go to personalize in setting options select htc wallpapers select live wallpapers and pick one to enjoy one"
I can't do the 2nd step, because there is no choice to select 'install zip from sd card'.
Can anybody help me?
I've got the stock rom (Froyo) and the phone is rooted.
Help would be appreciated
Koen
nobody?, I really need this now
did you fetch cwm?
The instructions assume you have CWM recovery (or a similar tool) on your phone.
In order to install programs in this manner you have to get CWM recovery. (search for rom manager in market and flash cwm (it's the first option from the top),
then again, I'm assuming you're getting this since you're still on 3e (the recovery most galaxy s phones come with). What I'd like you to do is get your phone into recovery mode and tell me what the very first line on the top says.
Hi,
The first line says: 'Android system recovery <3e>'
theres your problem you need recovery 2e
search for CWM in either update.zip or Flashable Odin version like cf-root.
if you get the update.zip version you need to put it on the root of your internal sd card, boot into recovery and select apply:update.zip you will need to do this twice... then CWM will appear and let you flash unsigned zip files.
if you use odin version just flash it in download mode and when you next boot you will have 2e recovery.
I just fixed it, I did put the 'data/app' folder onto my phone, and installed it, and it worked.
Thx everyone
There's your problem
You currently do not have the option to install (most) zip files from recovery. If you do want this option it is very possible and not too complicated(although this might void warranty) please read the forum guide on how to get CWM (clockworkmod)
I'm having a similar problem, but azzledazzle's suggestion left me a little baffled. I've got rom manager installed, Clockworkmod flashed and all that good stuff, but I'm still not able to install new roms. Now, I'm just about to try recovery mode, and...
Yes, 3e.
But how do I find a 2e thingie? Imagine I'm a gigantic moron who can put things in folders, but that's about it. I apologise for the pathetic help request, but if there's anyone...
Any help guys?thanks
Also having problems installing from sd
* edit*
Nvm
Listen..I have a HTC One V and when I go in recovery mode it says E:Can't open...Then when i press Vol Up + Power Button a list of commands pops up but there is nothing saying install zip from SD card..And now it's stuck at the htc one screen i can't start it up \_/
can it work for i9300 ?

[Q] Bricked Phone? Can't Load Recovery

This is my bro's old phone, and he said it's rooted and it has CWM installed.
1. I wanted to install a new rom so I put the zip file in an SD card.
2. There's a Recovery mode option when you want to restart the phone
3. I wiped the cache and data/partition.
4. I tried searching for the zip file, but I couldn't find it.
5. So I turned off the phone and relocated the zip file to the root of the sd drive.
Now! I'm trying to load into recovery, but I can't.
Is it bricked????
I plugged it on the pc and it made a sound that detected the device.
Btw, I'm a total amateur at programming/rooting, so all the help in the simplest form would be very appreciated.
Please help, the phone is still good and I don't want it to go to waste. I wanna start using it! Any help is appreciated (including reference links to other posts/threads)
to come into recovery mode, pull your battery out and then in again. then hold volume up, home button and power on all together....hold them all 3 till Samsung S logo is gone or till Kernel logo appears, the you can led the power button free but hold the other 2 till you will be in recovery mode again.
In CWM do not search or tick for the update zip. Go over: install zip from internal sd card and then phone should show you the files which are included there. Hopefully device will show you the rom.zip you want to flash there too.
If not, then i recommend to search here in the forum, and take you some to read and inform you about next steps....here are some links for first and further informations:

[A.I.O Rescue & Recovery] My Android Collection:

Update my samsung.

hello I have a Samsung Galaxy GT-I9000 Orange firmware version 2.2.1 and kernel version 2.6.32.9 root @ DELL104 version number # 1 FROYO.BVJS4 I want it to version 2.3.6 and after version 10 cynogenMod .
the question that I must étépe by step.
thank you for your assistance.
Excuse my English I used google translate
Morning,
So. Breaking this up into three stages.
Installing 2.3.6
1.) From Sammobile.com, download a 2.3.6 firmware of any region. Many people use XXJW4 (UK). Also download Odin unless you already have it.
2.) Place this firmware somewhere in your computer. Start up Odin.
3.) Turn your phone off. Once it has shut down, hold down the Volume Down, Home and Power buttons. You should see a "Downloading!" with a yellow android. This is download mode.
4.) Connect the phone to the computer using a USB. On Odin, one of the boxes should turn yellow saying "ID:COM".
5.) Click on PDA, then find the firmware you downloaded. DO NOT TOUCH ANY OTHER BUTTONS.
6.) Wait for it to start flashing.
Once you have 2.3.6, you need to root it...
1.) From the I9000 development forums there is a thread called "CF-Root". Search until you find the file with a JW4 in the name. (Will post links later)
Or you can just google "How to root 2.3.6 XXJW4" and it will take you there.
2.) Oece you have downloaded the zip file, unzip it. You should find a .tar file inside.
3.) Start up Odin and get into download mode. Connect the phone by USB.
4.) Just like before, click on PDA, find the CF-Root .tar, click on it. Again, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE.
5.) Wait for it to flash in. Your phone is now rooted
After that comes installing CyanogenMod...
1.) Backup whatever data you want (SMS, contacts, etc)
2.) From these development forums download BOTH CM9 and CM10. Also download JB gapps (Google Apps, links will be posted later). There is a good reason for this. Put all of these files on your phone, in your internal storage (not a microsd).
3.) This time, turn the phone off and hold down Volume Up, Home and Power buttons. You'll see your recovery mode.
4.) Using the volume buttons to move up and down, scroll down until you see "Wipe data". Select yes. This will erase everything! Do the same for "Wipe Cache" and "Wipe Dalvik Cache" under "Advanced Settings".
5.) Once they have all finished, select "Install zip from sdcard". Scroll until you see the CM9 zip. Install this first.
6.) It might start installing but then stop halfway, and then your phone will bootloop. DON'T PANIC. Your phone hasn't been bricked Just take the battery out, put it back in and boot into recovery mode lke before again. You'll see recovery has changed.
7.) Go to 'install zip from sdcard' again. Find the CM9 zip and install that AGAIN. Select Yes. Wait for it to finish.
8.) Once it has finished, let it boot for the first time. Once it gets to the homescreen, turn the phone off.
9.) Put it back in recovery... Again. Go 'install zip from sdcard'. Scroll down and this time install the CM10 zip. Select Yes and wait for it to finish.
10.) Once it has finished, select 'install zip from sdcard' again and this time find your JB Gapps zip. Wait for that to flash in.
Done! you've upgraded to 2.3.6, rooted and installed CM10.

Custom ROMs can sometimes be unstable. PLEASE make sure you are downloading the correct file for your device model.
Tampering with your device's firmware, including custom recoveries, ROMs, or rooting your device WILL VOID THE WARRANTY.
Flashing a custom ROM WILL DELETE YOUR DATA. Consider backing up your apps, photos, videos, files, etc. online or to an external storage.
Before we start, we need to download a few things.
*Do not download anything with Safari! Safari unzips zip files, but we want them to stay zipped. DO NOT RE-ZIP THE FILE YOURSELF!!! It will not be zipped in the correct format!*
1. Odin v3.12.3: (Odin)
2. The TWRP recovery tar file: (TWRP)
3. Your custom ROM zip file. (There are many ROMs out there, but Lineage is a pretty good one: (Lineage OS klte) Choose the most recent release.) IMPORTANT: Make sure you download this to your phone's internal/external storage to an easily accessible location.
4. A GApps package. This is required if you want to be able to download apps from the Google Play Store. Go to the Open GApps page and choose ARM, and Android 7.1. You shouldn't need anything more that micro. IMPORTANT: This file also goes onto your phone's internal/external storage.
5. Your device drivers. Most of the time, Windows will automatically install the required drivers once you put in the device, but in the case this doesn't happen, try googling your devices model number and "windows drivers." Follow the process to install.
Alright, with that out of the way, let's install TWRP.
1. With your phone unplugged, boot into "Download mode." Power off your device. Then hold down the Power, Home, and Vol- buttons until you see a warning pop up.
2. Accept the warning by clicking Vol+.
3. Run the Odin exe file we downloaded earlier. (You may have to unzip the file first.)
4. Go to Options and disable auto reboot. Go back to the Log tab.
5. Plug your device into the computer. You should see Odin say "ADDED!" on the side.
6. Click "AP" and locate the TWRP recovery tar file we downloaded earlier.
7. Once you select the file, click "Start."
8. When finished, it should say "PASS" at the top. This is where you unplug your phone and remove the battery.
9. Wait 10 seconds before putting the battery back in.
10. Try booting into recovery by holding down the Power, Home, and Vol+ buttons. If it reads "Team Win Recovery Project" at the top, then congrats! You've successfully flashed TWRP! If it says at the top "stock recovery," try the whole process again from step #1.
Now we can flash your custom ROM!
1. This is where we wipe your phone's data. Click on "Wipe." Then Swipe to factory reset.
2. After you have wiped your device, click on "Install"
3. Now navigate to the ROM zip file and select it.
4. Click on "Add more zips"
5. Navigate to the GApps zip file and select it.
6. Swipe to install. This can take some time, so grab a cup of coffee and maybe check out my Youtube channel?
7. The moment of truth: click on Reboot, then System. The first boot can take a minute. If it doesn't show up after 5 minutes, remove the battery and try wiping and flashing again.
CONGRATULATIONS!! You've installed a custom ROM! Enjoy!
EXTRA:
If you want to enable root on your Lineage OS device, you must flash an additional file first.
1. Go to this link and download the first su (arm) file and save it to an easily accessible location.
2. Boot into recovery mode once again by powering off your device, then pressing and holding Power, Home, and Vol+ until TWRP appears.
3. Click on install.
4. Select the su zip file we downloaded earlier.
5. Swipe to install.
6. Once it is installed, boot back into system.
7. Navigate to developer options in settings.
8. Scroll down to"Root Access" and change it to either Apps, or Apps and ADB.
Awesome, now you have root!
Thanks for the help:

I did not work for me, when I go recovery mode it shows:
Could not do normal boot
Odin mode.
I'm definitely not an pro at this, so can anyone help me please
Worked perfectly on the latest stock OTA!
Doesn't work for me. When I reboot in recovery ode, instead of TWRP loading I get a generic Android Recovery screen with a few options - reboot system now, reboot to bootloaded, apply update from ADB apply update from SD card, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, mount /system, view recovery logs, power off. Now sure how to proceed....

We’re you sure to unplug and remove the battery? This is essential to ensure the phone powers down. If you just power down the phone will reset the recovery to avoid TWRP. You have to remove any power source to force a shutdown before it can reset. Please feel free to respond and I’ll be happy to help to the best of my abilities!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It worked perfectly in my SM-G900MD, and it's easier than the method suggested by the Lineage OS page itself. :good:
Thanks, these steps worked just fine on an SM-G900T, and were very easy to follow.
Thank you! This worked beautifully.
Only thing that didn't work the first time is, is that it told me to download the Gapps Android 8.1 file instead of 7.1.
I hear people talking of unlocking the bootloader in order to install a custom ROM. Why haven't you mentioned that in this article?
Had the "FAIL! (Auth)" problem with flashing TWRP with Odin.
It seems that after I have disabled Reactivation Lock (the standard feature that requires activation of the phone with Samsung account) it helped to succeed flashing TWRP.
Hi All,
Thanks for a great and useful guide. Whilst it says this can be achieved without root, which is fantastic... It doesn't mention anything about tripping Knox or not?? I assume this will trip the Knox counter, won't it ?? Or do this method bypass that ??
Thanks, Lister
adult supervision needed for Samsung S5 Lineage 17 install
Hi, I'm good with adb and fastboot, running Linux with the commandline Odin4. I can get the phone to the warning screen about the danger of installing other Roms. How do I proceed? What are the commandline options to use to flash the LineageOS 17 with odin4 ? The Odin4 help file isn't very helpful.
Could not do normal boot
I am not an expert at this and I am having the same issue as The Verg
I have a message at the top "Could not do normal boot" same as him
I've been at this for 2 days now I'm just about at my ends wit
My phone is a Samsung S5 Active model SM-G870W
and I can easily rooted it or reinstall the stock file and put it back to original
and I've done that hump time but this TWRP file I just can't install it
to update this phone to a more recent software and basically install
an S8 or S9 software in it (mind you version 9 Pie would be OK0
and make this old phone a real beast.
I read somewhere about the OEM button which does not exist on this phone
whatever explanation they are giving to unlock it and make the button appear
all of a sudden is bs in my book.
Now please help me with this phone and the other guy by the same token
Is there another way I can get into this phone and wipe it clean and
boot it with thru the abd file or access the sd card or the internal
storage of the phone.
How can I add a picture of my phone to this thread
