[Q] Weak Wifi signal. Broken wifi antenna or the way its meant to be? - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I've searched around the forums about wifi connectivity issues on the Touchpad running CM7, and while I've found some similar scenarios, I'm not sure if they are the same issue I'm having.
The wifi signal on my TP is incredibly weak. Unless I'm in the same room as my wifi router, signal strength always teeters on low to unusable. I've tried all the tricks I could find on these forums, changing wifi channels, using Wireless-G only, using wireless-N only, wide channels, standard channels, No security, WEP security, WPA2 security, even moving the router to another part of the house. However, the signal strength is still incredibly unreliable on my TP.
In comparison, my iPhone, both laptops, and 3 desktop computers all connect with great signal in any place around the house.
I'm currently using Xronified v2.9 ROM, and I've also tested this on CM7 Alpha 3.5. Both OSes could barely maintain a connection if they got a signal at all. WebOS has a stronger signal, but not even full bars when I'm in an adjacent room to the router. That seems strange to me.
Can anyone confirm or deny that they have similar issues with wireless strength? I'm asking to see if the TP is like this by design, or if I have a dud TP that I should get replaced by HP. I even tried opening the casing and reseating the wifi antennas with no success. I've also ordered a new dual band router to see if that will make any difference. But that will only help when I'm at home, it won't help when I go anywhere else.
Any advice would be appreciated, and if I somehow missed a similar thread that exists, my apologies for double posting. Thank you everyone for your support!

The wifi driver in android still has issues but webos shiuld work fine for wifi. I get about the same wifi signal as my droid3.

Thanks for the info, I was worried that my device was defective. I will keep waiting until updates fix this, (which I hope is soon, it's difficult to use a tablet without internet access).

Have you put the slider to best performance rather than best battery?
Yes i did
never had the problem with the tytn and wizard.
I only get that on my TyTN II when I'm far away from the router and the signal strength is low. If you've already set the performance vs battery life slider to give maximum performance as suggested by kareem9nba and it's still behaving as reported, what happens when you're near to the router?
If it's just that your saying the range isn't as good as youve been used to with other devices, I have nothing to compare my TyTN II with as this is my first WiFi capable ppc - but I'm sure other more experienced members here will be able to comment. If you're near to the router where there's no doubt it should be working fine and still getting problems then thats a different matter.
maybe your router needs a restart or maybe its just faulty.
have you tried other devices with same router?
try a wifi sniffer/scanner see what happens (a good example would be PeekPocket)

I do! My Kaiser's performance is on a par with my old HTC Universal, which is to say, they are both terrible at getting a signal. I don't think my Kaiser is faulty as back in the Universal forums, it was often commented how useless the WiFi was in comparison to other machines. I used to have a HP Ipaq 5450 which could get a signal upto approx 20m from my router, my laptop starts struggling at around 50m. The Universal could just about get a signal upto 4m away, the Kaiser is no better.
I realise much of this is due router location and the fact that I was trying to get WiFi in my garage, but in my bedroom with a full signal on the laptop, the HTC devices struggle to get more than 1 bar and if I move 10cm further away from the router the signal goes completely.
I think the WiFi on the Universal and the Kaiser just isn't that powerful. I guess it's Maximum Performance setting is still quite low power in order to save battery life. Wonder if there is a registry tweek to increase the power to the WiFi card, and if doing that would blow the card?!

I'm using an 11 Mbps Wifi capable router (about 2003 vintage) and even with a wall and a floor between my TyTN II and the router it still works about 15 m away, I've yet to try any further as that'd be outside the house. I was impressed to see it even detected other WiFi sources in the area though. I found that even though the signal quality bar was fluctuating, my web browsing still worked OK. Bumping the slider towards the performance end did make a difference to the signal quality indicator (although it still fluctuated). If your TyTN II is only working up to 4 m from your router then I think there's a fault with either device, you should be getting better than that.
I can connect to my linksys WRT54G when beside the it and 20mt away. Even when beside it the TynII will cycle off (disconnect) and then reconnect again. I thought it was signal strength but I am beginning to think its just a crappy wifi setup on the tyn. I also have my slider on best performance.

Funny that, so am I! However I bought it because it was cheap and I really didn't know much about WiFi etc several years ago when I bought it. I notice many routers come with external antenna's, mine is all internal so I would think that it's more my router isn't that powerful, combined with the Kaiser having a less powerful WiFi set-up that older models. To be fair, the Ipaq had an external antenna (of sorts, a little lump on top) and my previous laptops didn't have built in WiFi, their external WiFi adaptors also had external antenna's.
Frankly I think that all this internalisation of components is having a negative impact on signal strength and range. To compare I have a GSM car kit with an external antenna that picks up a much better signal than a phone on it's own. Likewise my GPS can be connected to an external antenna and I've noticed when connected it will pick up more satalites, with a stronger lock, than when on it's built in antenna. It also picks up more than the Kaiser (internal antenna) or Universal (external bluetooth GPS with internal antenna) ever do.
Still, it all just about works for my needs, so I'm going to leave well alone!

But does this actually affect your browsing? In the end the signal quality bar can do whatever it wants as long as the data still gets through as far as I'm concerned and for me that’s happening. My hunch is that the reason why the signal quality bar intermittently dips down (even when nearby a router) is associated with power management on the TyTN II (which will still be in place to a certain degree even when the performance vs. battery life slider is fully at the performance end).

really i can't connect to my wifi router, while other hardware can (a laptop for example). it loops from "connecting" to "available" with 5 bars. but nevers connect or never shows an error. i tried open, WEP, WPA, WPA2 with no results... its a compatibility problem of TYTN II with some routers....
i hope that upgrading firmware, this problem dissapear....
Hi
My experience isn't that the signal itself is particlarly poor, but that it can be prone to loose connection regularly if its very weak. Atm I'm sitting some 150m from the accesspoint (quite powerfull transmitter), through a couple of concrete walls and its fast, as in almost so fast as the Kaiser can chew. Livestreaming from Youtube is np etc. The signal is no doubt very poor tho, and I have to use max signal/minimum battery on that bar you can adjust.
What drives me nuts is that it DCs me and often force me to key in the network key randomly every 1 to 20mins or so. I don't know if this is due to weak signal (both my laptop and the kaiser have 1 bar) or config of the wlan/kaiser. The PC dont DC, but its deffo a cranky connection. It almost seems like theres some auto-DC feature somewhere.
On other networks I haven't seen this. Generally I find the Kaiser wlan surprisingly powerfull, albeit it often shows a weak signal I've found this to be very relative and far from always descriptive of real life performance.

kaiser wifi low signal - wi fi poor reception - wifi disconnecting and reconnecting:
Suffered a lot with my kaiser wifi poor reception. Tested several radio versions and could solve the problem.
Radio version:
1 71 09 01 - too low WIFI reception
1.27.12.11 - disconnecting and turning OFF the WIFI with no automatic reengage of the access point or turning ON the WIFI if coverage is good.
1.65.17.56 is the versione that SOLVED my problem.
This radio was collected from the original HTC shipped rom:
RUU_Kaiser_HTC_WWE_3.28.405.0_radio_sign_25.83.40.02_1.65.17.56_Ship.exe
In this moment I am running Radio 1.65.17.56 with
ROM jjblaster3 - updated 28014 with good WIFI behaviour.
I need to underline that the reception I have now with the Kaiser, can never reach the sensibility of my Nokia 5530 WIFI or the one I have on my laptop with good antenna embeded in my LCD framem but I am happy now because the WIFI is making sense now.
Best Regards

I'm facing the same problem. WiFi worked fine and one day it was suddenly gone. Tried quite a few radios, including 1.65.17.56 and still no deal.
To elaborate, when WiFi is turned on, the icon never even comes up in the taskbar, and it continues to remain in an off state (when checked in wifi settings) even when it's turned on (in the comm manager).
I'm guessing this could be a hardware problem like a loose contact to the antenna? Anyone heard of such issues?
(On a side note, the phone function never worked either, I always got a "No Service")
I've fixed it! I believe the problem was indeed a loose antenna. I opened up my phone and removed the antenna peice (the plastic plate that also houses the speaker) and pushed up the two pins left of the camera (so that they'll have better contact with the antenna piece. Put everything back and now the WiFi works!
Now if only I can figure out why the cellular doesn't work..

Wifi range

I don't seem to get a very good wifi range on my hd7. The hd7 gets 1 bar where other devices in the same position relative to the router get 2 or3 bars, anyone else find this or is mine a faulty device?
im sorry i just found this but i have the same problem! i cant be more than 1 wall away from my router or my hd7 won't find my wifi! i hope this isnt a hardware issue:/
As for Me the Hd 7 has had the best connectivity for wifi for me .. totally pleased, might be somthing to do with the routers.. I have bad connectivity with my Hero but brilliant with the HD 7
WiFi issues
I have issues connecting to WiFi even in the same room as router is, on open networks in coffe shops and hotels.
It's very weird, I get the message that the password is incorrect, or the network unreachable.
I actually dont recall that have one case of successed WiFi connection, I think this is very strange!
Any advices how to improve phone's sensibility, where is Antenna placed?
thanks in advance,
silversurfer03
I have been having the same problem. I noticed turning off my data connection completely actually helped some. It seem like the HD7 will try to connect through whatever connection is strongest.
can anyone test different Radios, see which one get better wifi reception.
I tested mine just next to my laptop, while my laptop reach last 2 bars, my HD7 disconnected sometimes.
Wifi reception.
I get pretty good WiFi reception I had to find a specific channel in a congested area i.e. my house but that was router side. I use my phone on WiFi at my house upstairs through a few walls with little issue. It gets the same level if reception as my iPad. Not really a great example there. While alot can effect WiFi reception you guys may have a legit hardware issue.
Same issue here. My HD2 could connect to my router anywhere in my house - however I move to another room now and the HD7 has real problems as the signal is showing as weak! I know it's not weak as my netbook and old HD2 still have no problems at all.. let's hope a radio update will sort it pout.
same issue here
I also encounter big problems with wifi.
At my place I can connect with my laptop and any previous phone I owned to my wifi from my bedroom, but not with my HTC HD7. When I'm in the same room I have nog issues at all.
At my parents place my phone doesn't like the wifi, I am not able to connect to the wifi even in the same room. Other phones are not having issues with the wifi.
Same issue on my EVO, i only have a 20 ft range on my wifi now. Not sure what happened but it really bums me out not being able to fix it.
I am also having this same problem with my EVO. Started not long ago and I have no idea why or how to fix it. no wifi really sucks
I have the exact same problem ever since I bought my HTC HD7S.
WiFi range is horrible regardless of the OS I'm on.
I just updated it to 7.8 and it is exactly the same.
I sent it in to HTC and they said they'd charge me 160 USD to fix it, the phone only cost 99 USD no contract, no fees, but carrier locked of course so it's not worth it.
I did drop it on the floor in Oakland, would any of you with this issue have done the same?
Would that be why my WiFi is so horrible?
What could I do to fix this, replace the WiFi chip inside the phone?

This has been posted before in general section and some report it works some not.

It helps I think.
My understanding is that this is the level when the phone decides that wifi is too weak and it should switch to a data signal.
I don’t suffer from range issues – the SP has as good, if not better range than all the other wireless devices in my house. However connecting in the first place can be a right pain.
I had an xperia ray before and it also did what I’m about to describe (but connected more reliably) – in essence when wifi is ‘connecting’ the signal strength will go from excellent/good/fair to poor or even nothing. It fails to connect and I’m told there’s an authentication issue.
This tells me that either my router reduces its wifi signal, or my phone is less able to receive the signal during this stage. As my router is old (6/7 years), I’m inclined to think it’s the router – Sony probably test their devices on more recent hardware.
With these things in mind what this tweak does, is hold on to the wifi signal for longer before switching to a data connection, making connecting to wifi more likely.
In my case after applying this hack the signal still drops whilst ‘connecting/authenticating’ but connects more frequently, and the signal goes back up again once connection is made.
I must also say that wifi problems are not unique to Sony devices and having had a look elsewhere for a solution I discovered that many other phones, from a variety of manufacturers, have similar issues. One of the big US Universities even wrote reports about how the Android OS was at fault for overloading their wireless network with repeated DHCP requests.
Anyway before you apply the tweak try enabling ‘auto IP support’ in advanced wireless settings. Similarly it doesn’t make sense to have ‘avoid poor connections’ enabled.
It does work for me

Thanks for the answers. I have been testing this fix and i can say it works for me. Where i had 1 weak signal now i have 2 or 1 but a steady one. Now i can move in my house without losing WiFi.
Remember that you can change -100 and test it with more (-300) but I supouse the battery will last less. Otherwise you can change to -90 or -95 if you think WiFi its enough good.
Very good. Saw significant improvement in the areas of the house that I had a problem with the connection before. C5303 on 12.0.A.1.257.
Thanks

Random Slow WiFi problem

So today I started having a strange issue with my Droid Turbo. The WiFi speeds are absolutely abysmal. Everything was fine in the morning. Then I went out for a while and got home around 4, and my phone wouldn't connect to the WiFi. I finally got it to connect, but nothing was loading, so I ran a speed test and saw that I was getting < 1Mbps down and up. This was really strange because I usually get 50 up and 25 down. All my other devices work, including 3 laptops, 2 iPhones, a note 2, an iPad, and a Chromecast. My router is an ASUS Google OnHub, and I used my Turbo to set it up. LTE works fine. I've already tried the basic steps, including a cache partition clear, but nothing is working. Any idea what's going on?
Edit: so I did some testing and found out that if I hold my phone right up to the router it will give me the full speed. Once i move a few feet away it drops significantly. However, my phone still reports the signal strength as "excellent". I also tried this with a different network somewhere else, this time with a Cisco router, and the results were the same.
My wife's phone had all sorts of issues recently with Wifi on her Turbo. Longer story short, we found it was related to interference with her bluetooth (also on 2.4GHz) and possibly interference from neighbors. I'm not sure what changed, but I had her on 2.4GHz and she had all sorts of issues. I moved her to 5GHz which has resolved the issues (though it's much shorter range now, too). Turning off bluetooth seemed to help... but it didn't resolve it completely. The phone would say it was connected, but it wouldn't actually function online. We do live in an apartment complex with LOTS of 2.4GHz users and interference, so something in someone else's apartment may be interfering... obviously I'm not going to be able to figure that out with so many neighbors! Also, we have an Asus router... so that's why I figured maybe something is up with Asus's code or something, too... making more sensitive to interference?
Update: So I noticed that my phone was only connecting to the 2.4 GHz band, which is strange because everything else would connect to the 5GHz band. I messed around a bit and I found out that the range was just too short. When I placed my phone on top of my router, it would connect to the 5GHz band. As soon as I walked away, it would disconnect. So this leads me to believe that the wifi antenna inside my phone got messed up somehow.

WiFi strength, range, and throughput

Rate this thread to express how you think the LG V20's Wifi performs. A higher rating indicates that it has excellent range, throughput, and signal strength. Like when you're taking a dump in the bedroom upstairs, do your videos have to buffer or do they come through without interruption?

WIFI Multi Route Network Problem
I am having problems with wifi on my work network in the office. The explanation I got from our IT department is that the phone is having troubles with multi route setting on the network. Wifi home works without problems, but wifi at the office is not working at all. It is showing as connected but you cannot open any page nor get any internet access through any app. Anybody having this issue?
This is the first phone I've owned that has been able to fully utilize my home internet speeds. Every other phone has reduced the speeds by as much as half, and sometimes as little at 25%.
The auto switch between wifi and mobile data works great. There was nothing more frustrating than sitting in my car in front of my house, trying to pull up navigation and the phone running horrendously slow because it wanted to use my wifi that was 100 feet and 16 walls away, just because there was a signal.
I had the same issue with my wi-fi and internet signal for a time. Have you tried checking the phone lines in your area? Stactic noise in the lines may affect the stability of the signal. Have an IT expert check and replace the line if necessary to hopefully resolve the issue.
Signal strength is better than my note 7 before I sent not back I ran test checking data strength. I walked outside up the street connected to home wifi note lost connect 7 houses up the street v20 i was near 9th house
GPS accuracy, Lock speed, and reliability is poor for me. Can we vote on that?
My V20 is head and shoulders better than my Note 7 when it comes to networking performance. I had real, serious issues with throughput on the N7. My Note 3 would get ~5MB/sec transfers from my home Linux servers' SMB shares, the N7 would get 800-1000KB on a good day. The V20 is on par with the N3 on SMB, but where it REALLY shines is encrypted transfers via SCP. I can do SCP file copies at 80MB/sec reliably. It's amazing. I'm guessing we have some sort of encryption offload chip in the phone or something.
Does anyone else have this issue where the wifi cuts in and out every 30 minutes or so? I have a Netgear WNDR3400 router and I'm on Nougat 7.0

Auto Proxy
OK so I investigated the issue of not having internet through WIFI although connected to network, and the issue is that the phone cannot use auto proxy? My LG G4 did not have this issue. Setting up manual proxy through Drony app solves the issue. Any way to get this working straight out of android? Seems like 7.0 took a step back in usability.
I have a Asus AC68U router and the LG V20 reports the connection speed as 78Mbps, whereas my S7 Edge shows the speed as 173Mbps while connected to the same network.
Why is the V20 connecting at such a slow speed? Have reset the router, turned off Wifi optimisation on the phone, but speeds have not improved.
Is there anything else I can try out?

I have the same router. Mske sure you are connected to 5ghz and you will get adequate speed. I have no problems.
Wifi strength is good, a lot better than my G3. The download speeds are a little less than my laptop, like 35 vs 50 and 70 on 2 laptops, they may be connecting to different severs though, the speed seems to vary more on the phone. Sometimes it's slow to switch over to LTE when moving out of wifi range. Tells me no internet connection when wifi is too weak to get a good signal. Mainly an issue I think with a weak wifi signal that it's still trying to connect to.

Solution to my issue: Not sure if it was a combination of things or just solely this tip from an LG rep:
Go to: Settings>Apps> (3 dots top left) > Show System> Wi-Fi > (storage>clear cache & clear data)
Tried connecting to Wifi after that and it worked on my v20. Also I entered in slightly different info in my work wifi splash page which may or may not have made a difference.
Hello, has anyone had a problem that they cannot connect to 5G on your router? My phone will not connect to 5G what ever I do, but will connect no problem to 2.4G. I've tested it with several different routers and all my other devices connect without any problems.
WiFi Issues
I was having issues with my WiFi at home only. Connected everywhere else. I found a post on this site that helped. The post was for a different issue. I just looked at all of the other settings that were available and did a little experimenting. My issue is fixed. WiFi is now good everywhere!!! I have T-Mobile so I am not sure if it will work with other carriers.
Dial-er code that got me to the right menu.

I found that taking the metal back off my v20 improved download speed significantly!
I reported that in the discussion about people unable to get 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
