Button combinations, External UART and Download Mode JIG - Samsung Focus S

Hey guys, I just received a Focus S from Samsung in error. I just put it through my standard high-level hardware hacking routine.
Download Mode

Hold Camera + Volume Down + Power
Unknown Boot Mode

Connect 619Kohms of resistance between USB Pins 4 and 5 (aka 4 and X).
Monitor UART output at 3V, 115200bps, 8n1. RX on USB Pin2 and TX on USB Pin3
Observe the following messages
Code:
AST_POWERON
BOOTING COMPLETED
Here's what I find interesting... These are the same messages observed on the GalaxyS i9100. Also, this boot mode is apparently not accesible by any other means. It is possible that it is a dedicated dual-boot mode without a kernel. It would be worth researching the partition structures.
Now, if Samsung lets me keep this device, I can see what else I can do. I'd like to probe for the internal UART as well. However, this is as far as I can get without tearing the device apart. I hope this helps in the quest for Android on the Samsung Focus.

I'm sorry about my stupid question.
But what does the Download Mode:::: i really don't know

I domt know... samsung asked for the device back. On GalaxyS devices, you use the tool Odin3 to load firmware through download mode.

Hard Reset a pin-locked Handset

Guys,
I am sorry, to post this request. I have tried searching on this forum but haven't achieved what I was looking for hence the post.
I gave my old Kaiser to my 12 year old after upgrading to Touch Pro. He put a PIN Lock on the handset so that his friends wouldn't see his mails. After a few months of usage he managed to change the PIN and forgot it. Now the handset won't unlock. Also on the PIN unlock screen there is some kind of counter going on.
I tried the recommended way of hard resetting. Pressing the two SOft Keys and inserting the stylus in soft reset button. Then hold the soft keys for 20 odd seconds and press Send key and then wait for some confirmation. But all it does is soft reset it.
I thought of flashing the ROM with the standard 6.1 again, but everytime I connect the phone to the PC, it first asks to unlock the handset first.
Is there a way out?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
your pressing the wrong "soft" keys prolly. press the two "inner" buttons, the "minus signs" and reset with stylus button

Make sure you are doing it like this. If it is just soft resetting, it is because you are not getting the soft keys pushed all the way. Use two pencil erasers or pens. The soft keys were not made for fat fingers.

Unbrick without Jig?

Hi guys, a friend of mine just bricked his Galaxy (I-9000).
3 button combo for download mode doesn't work.
Screen shows the black screen of death (phone - ! - computer)
Is there any other secret way to reboot in download mode?
Other than build or buy a Jib usb
if it wont reboot in download mode, then no, a jig is required

Try this, worked for me....doesn't seem to work for everyone though.
"Leave Odin Open. Then Plug the USB. While the USB is plugged in and Odin running press and hold volume down + Home + Power. Once the black screen comes release the Power Button. It will get to the download mode"
Worked first time for me.

I was considering getting a usb jig from someone, as my galaxy ace 2 wasn't going anywhere apart from the samsung boot screen... But your method worked like a charm! Many, many thanks :good::good::good:

[Q] Is my power button going?

I've had my Nexus One since January 2010. Currently running CM7 latest RC, with apps2ext via S2E.
I've noticed the past day or two, often if I press the power button to sleep, it goes off and then pops back on a moment later. Much more rarely, when I press it to wake, it might pop on and off.
This does seem to be somewhat state-dependent though. The off-on behaviour never happens if it's on the lock screen. So sometimes I have to sleep it (it pops on again), then sleep it a second time - but then it sticks.
Is this a sign my power button is starting to go faulty like so many others on here? Or could there be a software component too?

I am not sure I agree with avgjoemomma. Typically when the power buttons starts to go, it won't register presses, rather than registering extra presses. At least, that has been my observations with my two phones that had the powerbuttons go out on me. I would be more inclined to think this is a software issue (plus, they tend to be a lot easier to check).
Since you are on RC1 for CM7, I would try wiping the /system partition manually through recovery and installing one of the later nightlies (there have been quite a few fixes since RC1 came out. If you want to make sure it isn't software, you can do a full wipe including MANUALLY wiping the system partition and then doing a Factory Reset/Data Wipe and reinstalling. This will give you a completely blank slate to see if it is software or hardware.
No. That is most definitely a software issue. I had the same thing when I was running CM7.0.3 Final
I went into the Recovery, cleaned Cache and Dalvik-cache partitions, flashed the same version of the ROM (without having to wipe the device) and the problem was gone. I'd recommend doing this too.
If still it fails to stay ON, I'd recommend wiping the phone and flashing the ROM over again.
Mine is doing something similar.
When i wake the device (trackball) the screen will turn on then instantly go black. I thought it was actually turning off but if you touch the screen you get haptic feedback. You can actually unlock the device and use it but the screen won't turn on until you lock it again and re-wake. I try to avoid using the power button so I have a power widget to lock the screen in my notification bar.
Well it was definitely the hardware.
As of today my power button is entirely non functional. I have trackball wake and a Screen Off shortcut, but if the phone is ever powered down I can't turn it on until I get near a power plug.
Time to go shopping...

This is not easy in case Samsung Galaxy S6 due to its metal, glass construction and the main problem is it comes battery which is stick to the frame and buried underneath various components. So what to do if your device hangs or freeze? No problem I got the solution You just need to follow simple and easy steps:

(First Solution)
What you need to do is simply press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it to restart (just like you would hold down the power button on a PC to force it to power down.)
(Second Solution)
In case above trick didn't work for you. Just use a simple three-button combination. Press and hold the volume down, home and power/lock buttons until you come to a Warning screen as shown in the image below. Here you can press the volume down key to restart the phone.

Recovering Data from a Droid4 that won't boot

My droid4 won't get past the boot screen (red M).
It is stock, never rooted. Took it to VZW and the guy ripped the battery out WITHOUT unscrewing the two screws so not sure if it is creating a short.
I desperately need to recover my contacts and pictures. There was no google account on the phone.
Any ideas?

Data aside for a moment, I'd go back and get ahold of the guy's supervisor. There ought to be some sort of compensation in order following him physically damaging your device out of ignorance for how the battery is attached in certain Motorola devices.

I agree about the compensation for the damage to the phone but right now retrieving my data is top priority.

power off, hold volume down button, power on, it should boot to AP Fastboot cable, if it says low battery
i would try charging it, if it doesn't show charging screen
try
Booting from AP fastboot to charging mode
If the Device will only boot to AP Fastboot and it says Battery Low
Connect the phone/Device ato a Wall Charger (not PC)
-In AP Fastboot Mode hold Volume down& power buttons at the same time for +10 seconds
- When screen goes black...release power button
-Then IMMEDIATELY press and hold Vol - and Vol+ to boot to Boot Menu.
- In Boot Menu scroll down with volume down to BP Tools, press volume up to select
- Device should boot to Charging Mode with battery icon
If Motorola Device will not boot to Charging Mode, a Fastboot cable will be needed.
