Creaky back and other things? - HTC Incredible S

Hello!
I've heard that HTC's have very good build quality, and I've had my IS for just over a week now, and I've noticed 'creaks'. At first I thought it was the screen, but I've now realised it's the back cover that creaks sometimes. If I were to replace the back/get a protective case such as a 'Barely There Casemate' would that stop the creaking? I tried to post a link but am too new to.
Also, I noticed this when I first bought my phone and put the battery in, the battery fits in, but has a bit of a 'bounce' to it. If that makes sense. I thought it wasn't fitting in properly, but it does, just not RIGHT against the phone... if that makes any sense. Dunno if that would contribute to the creaky back, or whether that's normal.
Also, how can I get my LED to stay on longer when I get a text message? It's a handy feature, but it seems to stop flashing after about 20mins, which is a bit of a pain if I don't look at my phone for longer than that.
... and last but not least, Angry Birds. Whenever I open any of the games, they freeze at the home screen. I then have to hit home and reopen them, get to the next menu it freezes, I hit home and do the same routine till it eventually starts working. What's the deal? I thought about maybe reinstalling them, but surely each of the games wouldn't have installed incorrectly?
THANKS ALL.

I put a BodyGlove 2 piece case on my IncS and I do not notice the back sweaking anymore.

Oh, so the squeaky back is a common thing then?

Not for mine, I wonder if the problem is because one hasn't snapped the back on correctly.

It's definitely on properly. I've gone over the back a few times just to make sure it's clipped into place, so I dunno why it should do it.

Mine makes a noise at the bottom left corner of my case, got to admit its rather annoying. But i guess the majority of phones will unless its 100% flush with each other. Even when i put my otter case on it sometimes makes a noise.

The back on my phone is sometimes creaky as well. Since it's a malleable plastic, I'm guessing the weather/putting back on a certain way affects how squeaky or not it gets.

Ahh, okay, that settles it with the back then. Will just get a case. I need one any to give it a bit of protection, but it will hopefully stop the creaking. Am guessing the battery isn't a problem either if it's working in the phone... just me being a bit pedantic.
Anybody know if I'm able to make the LED stay on longer after receiving a text/notification?
OH! I've worked out what's going on with Angry Birds. Am presuming/hoping this is just an app problem. Basically, if I load the game and put the phone into landscape mode, the game won't work. I have to either hit home, or, spin the phone round into portrait mode, and then I can use the game. I then spin it back, choose the next menu and then put it back into landscape mode and then back again to get to the next setting/menu. It's a bit of a pain! Anyone know what's going on with that?
Thanks for all the replies so far.

Sorry for the bump. Anyone go any ideas for the game freeze and LED?

Anyone else have this clicking?

I have a new Tilt and this weekend I have been messing around with various touch programs. I noticed a clicking sound on the back of my device when I hold it a certain way.
To recreate the issue, turn your phone over and press your finger onto the back right above the speaker and on the same horizontal line with the GPS stud. On my phone it presses in very slightly and makes a clicking sound. All other areas of the phone back seem solid.
Does anyone else with a Tilt/TyTnII have this? Is it a design flaw or is it just my phone?
thanks.
k im kinda confused at what ur doing. I'll try to help but be more specific. Is the screen opened or closed? What program are you running? I know if i have the speakers all the way up and my fingers are on back of the device i get a scratchy noises but i wouldn't call it clicking.
hmm i tried to follow and i dont seem to be having that problem.
Yea, mine does it too. Actually, I have 2 tilts. The older one does it, but the newer one does not do it. It's so minor that some people might not even be able to reproduce it, since it is so minor. Very trivial if you ask me.
Yeah it doesn't appear to be a huge deal, I was just curious... it is almost like the battery cover isn't on properly...but it is.
redbandana...I am not talking about a program clicking, i am talking about the back case....with the tilt closed, push in on the back battery cover just above the speakerphone... it seems to push in ever so lightly and make a little clicking sound.
My Tilt case does not make any clicking noises like you report. Probably a "fit and finish" issue. If the battery cover is on properly, it's not something I'd tend to worry about.

Correct. It wasn't even worth a new thread, in my opinion. Sorry.

Shuts off when keyboard is slammed shut...

This is really bugging me but on occasion, when I slam the keyboard shut, the phone turns off. It also has happened when I opened the keyboard but only a few times.
I actually dissassembled the phone to see if maybe it was a loose connection somewhere. I did find that the keyboard ribbon cable was loosely connected so I reseated it firmly...but the problem didn't go away.
I also thought it may be either the SIMM card or the memory card contacts but after removing them, again, I still can reproduce the problem.
Understand that this is an intermittent problem and a little unpredictable but I can make it happen within a few tries. If I cautiously open and close the keyboard (without slamming it shut), I have no problems.
I don't believe it's software related because I can force it to happen when the device is booting up (with the Ericsson logo on the screen) before the OS loads.
Anyone else experiencing this?????
11/17/08 UPDATE: PROBLEM RESOLVED!
After further review and testing, it appears that the battery was losing connection to the battery contacts. I shoved a small crumb of paper folded up (about 1mm thick) at the back of the batt and the problem has gone away. Of course, I'm still holding my breath every time I open and close the keyboard but it looks like that may have been the problem. That's strange because I'm using the original battery. Thought this may help in case anyone else ever runs into this.
That sounds like a problem with the internals, maybe a you should get it replaced/repaired?
Kid says to doctor " IT hurts when I twist my arm backward like this." Doctor replies "then don't do that"
You say "my phone shuts off when I slam my keyboard shut" Doctor says "don't slam your keyboard shut"
this thought just made me laugh.
Seriously though. It does sound like an internal hardware issue that you should have fixed otherwise it may just get worse and start happening more regularly and at very inconvenient times.
Good luck.
Reminds me of my samsung slider phone the day that it died. I was sliding it back and forth.. sometimes the screen would go completely white and then come back.
By the end of the day, it went white and stayed that way.
Turns out the cable on the inside was slowly being cut from rubbing against the metal hole it was going thru every time the slider moved.
You've checked the cables before... but maybe its not cut yet, but something on the slider mechanism is hitting a wire/pulling on it.
Nobody knows.
But we all do know thats not normal. So yea get it replaced.
LOL!

Yep...It's going back. Might as well get a fresh one. I know this problem existed for other phones before and the fix was mostly something simple that didn't require a replacement.
im getting exactly the same problem. gonna send mine back as well.
i have the exact same problem too! Waiting for a new one...
i thought i was the only one with this problem, but it looks like a production error as there are already 3 people on this board who have this defect.

yep, my problem seems to have gone now as well by using you're method. i was almost ready to send it back and then i saw you're post and tried your method and it worked !
Thats a pretty stupid mistake by SE...
They should do a quick fix by making new batters a smidge thicker. Of course they probably wouldn't offer free replacements, but they should fix it anyway.

Where did you place the paper exactly ? On the back of the battery where all the info text is or on the bottom ?
When my device is cold, eg in the morning for first use, this sometimes doesnt happen for >20x tries...but when i used it for a longer time and it almost always shuts down when slammed shut..but i already thought it might be something with the battery, but sometimes while slamming it shut for numerous times even the battery cover would come up and it didnt shut down...then in another situation it shuts down immediatly
Poor design...

Yea...what I found with the design is that the ribbon cable connecting the keyboard sits right under the battery. In fact you can see the protrusion when you remove the battery under the white label. It moves when the keyboard is opened and closed. Slightly...but it does move.
...anyway...I folded a small piece of paper to wrap around the back edge of the battery.
Try this:
1. Make a small rectangular strip of paper about 10mm x 20mm and fold it the long way so you end up with a 5mm x 20mm piece.
2. Wrap it around the back/bottom edge of the battery as you reinsert it.
(If the battery fits more snug in its compartment, you got it right!)
3. Put the back cover back on--which should also be more snug.
4. Turn on the device and try it out (slam the keyboard).
(You don't have to wait for it to completely boot up...you can test it when the SE logo appears).
Be careful to use regular copy paper and not paper that's too thick as it may cause some other damage/problems with the device.
could you make a picture of that ?
Actually i will recieve a new device tomorrow, but i still have the feeling that this problem might reoccur as it seems to be a design flaw

I'm currently playing around with an old XV6800 I got off ebay, and this seems to have fixed the problem, so thanks
I had the same problem too.. but it was linked with the flex cable. Now i just don't use my keyboard even after fixing it.

screen problems?

i got my td2 just about a week. yesterday suddenly the touchscreen didnt work at all anymore! i was taking some pictures and then it stopped to do anything on the touchscreen. i rebootet the device few times but no go - even removed the battery but didnt work anymore. then i left the device a few minutes without battery and when i tried it again it worked. this scared me a little... because without touchscreen u are really lost with this phone.
ohwell.. i hope this doesnt happen again. but i actually got another strange thing here:
if i look into the screen from the side.. i can see a strange glimmer sometimes. it looks like oil in water... it does glimmer a little and its not visible all over the screen but the part does even grow. i noticed this yesterday and it was like 5cm long and 2cm width. but now its almost on the full screen and it looks like the effect when u press on a LCD screen really hard. but it appears without doing anything.. does anyone have that too on his TD2??
same problem here. its the device of a friend. one week old. but we didn´t managed it to bring it back to life again...
no we will try a hard reset.
battery was out for ar least 30min wizhout success.
even noticed some glimmer at the screen. hard to describe. like liquid between sreen and screen protector.... but only on those parts were we tapped on the screen...
no we try the hard reset - i´ll report how it worked.
somebody else with that problem here?
ok we tried a hard reset - no success. screen is dead. no way to setup the device. no reaction of the touch screen. will go to the o2 shop tomorrow and bring it back...
wow.. at least im not the only one. my screen is working again but the glimmer didnt go away. also today appeared one more defect on the screen - it looked like the protection plastic is moving, but then after some tapping on the screen it went away again. very strange!
the glimmer looks indeed like a liquid between the screen and the protection. sometimes its almost not visibe and sometimes its really good to see. i wonder whats going on here..
hey i just found something out!!
my screen has something like little bubbles under it when i do touch it on a certain area. when these bubbles are visible.. my screen does not work anymore!! then i can clean the screen a while with a tissue or my tshirt or whatever and the bubbles go away - as soon they are not visible anymore the touchscreen works again!!!
im tryin now to give that phone back and get a new one. i dont even have that phone 1 week!!
I have a Diamond2 with the same frozen screen issue. The screen just did not react to any tap. Soft reset may put it back to work again, but the symptom repeated after some time. Even hard reset cannot rectify the problem. It is hardware defect. Fortunately it is one week old and still within the one-to-one exchange policy and I can take back to the shop I bought push for an exchange. Having email HTC and they just ask for service check and refuse to exchange a new one. If you conduct a Google search of freeze screen, you may locate a lot of touch screen issue but only very limited solution. I suggest you to have the device exchange than going to repair.
Does it look like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2557175#post2557175???
Hi, I am experiencing the very same problem. Touchscreen stopped working. Taking out the battery for 5 minutes fixed it. But there is a oily liquid now beneath the screen. My device is 5 days old, this should not happen
Taking it to the shop on monday.
we tried everything but without any succes...
today we gave back the phone. it was within the one week limit. but there is another limitation: 15 minutes airtime! i said to the guy in that shop: when he can show me the airtime, we keep the phone - because than the screen seems to work again... )
but no problem they exchanged it against a new one! good service, very customer friendly at o2!
I encountered this one day after getting my unit. I got a replacement. It seems two layers of the touch screen is "stucked" together. Use scotch tape to lift up the area and and the touch screen responds. But the next time you press on the screen it will get stuck again.
So get it changed.
wow
what a great idea... never ever thought of that... *lol* but when you buy such a sophisticated mobile it looks very unsophisticated to lift your screen with scotch-tape everytime you tapped on the screen...

kinda yes. but not that big and after cleaning phone with a tissue it goes away. i will get a replacement in a few days.. hope this doesnt happen again - but shop told me it seems that there are a few ppl with that problem on td2!! :-(
ok i did get a replacement now and all is fine again. but i think i know what caused the problem.
actually i had the phone always in my back pocket of my jeans. this is not a very good idea when you sit down. the phone gets some pressure on the screen and my screen actually was lowered into the case a little bit. you can see this from the side. that did cause the air under the screen and also the oily liquid that sometimes appeared. so i think the screen felt into the phone case and this was causing the problems. my new phone does not look like the screen is lowered - its totally flat. so i will take more care and not using back pocket of my jeans again to put the phone in

I hope you are joking... I mean one can't be serious about carrying a touch screen device in a back pocket of his jeans. Are you even surprised about what happened to it? In fact I'm rather surprised you got a warranty replacement. There is a thing called User manual that comes with the device a it is saying 'Always remove the device from the pocket of your trousers prior to sitting down'. Yu are really lucky indeed you got a replacement....
well aint a mobile phone made for putting in the pocket? this is not my first phone and i never had such a problem even with a touchscreen phone. its not like i did sit on it with full force or something.. just had it in back pocket during cardriving. you can easy do that with any other phone without breaking it...

that's exactly what's it's not - it's a pda phone and it kind of makes sense to treat it differently from normal mobiles which can withstand all sorts of abuse. also if they ask you specifically not to do something because it can damage the device - and you do it and then you are surprised it happened. it's written there for a reason. they surely know that for many people it will be their first pda phone so they don't have much clue how to treat it...

Touch Screen Freeze for Nook Color?

My nephew may have or may not have smacked the touchscreen too hard playing angry birds. We are not sure, he is 4, but has never been rough before this with eletronics.
So I had a rooted phiremod cm7 nook. The screen stopped responding. I, thinking it was toast, reformatted back to stock since it is under the 1 year warranty still.
Now the screen works. This is great. I need to know if this could be just a fluke though. Did perhaps the screen crash from 4 year old fingers trying to get it to do ten things at once? Could something be loose in there, just waiting to die? It has frozen up before but in the past waiting a second always brought it back to normal. This time, several restarts and nothing. The touchscreen did not respond till after the reformat.
Now it seems fine but it did do this weird flashing over response thing when I tried to read the notifications in stock.
Should I take it back and tell them the screen is being wonky or not? What are the odds of it needing replaced/repaired?
Did you restart before you reflashed? Every once in a while my screen just completely stops working and I have to hold the power button until it turns off. And then all is good, seems to happen when it gets bogged down in an application
So it's just a thing these do then?
Whew. I was not looking forward with dealing with warranty repairs or replacement. I will just reflash it then.. after I mess with it some to be really sure..
I believe so, I used to have the screen freak out and phantom taps but a screenprotector solved that problem. I think its just because the screen is so sensitive
Hmmm.. my Nook is naked. It spends most of its time at home by my bed or in a practically perfect sized bag for travel so it was not something I worried too much about. But if it will help...
I will 'dress' my nook. A screen protector, a silicone thin skin and I'll even get a cheap leather case just in case.
And I think I need to stop lurking so I can edit my posts faster.
It couldn't hurt, I recommend getting a three pack of "crystal clear" ones from eBay at about $3. You will want more than one in case you don't get all the dust off the first time

[Q] How do I dismantle the Samsung Focus S

I dropped my phone in water and took the battery out to let everything dry. The phone turns on now and seems to work for the most part, but I am having trouble with the internet connection and also my new text messages are not showing up. I can see all of the old ones, though. I wanted to know if anyone knows how to take the phone apart. I've removed the screws, but can't figure out how to take the back off. Any help would be great!

im away from home at the moment but I haven't got a clue, in saying that, isn't the galaxy S2 almost identical? maybe worth looking in to,
im also guessing that its probably just a case of slipping a very thin piece of hard plastic down the edge unclipping the plastic clips
however, in saying all that, i seriously doubt its anything to do with water damage. your radio will either work or wont work, you can either get calls, internet and sms/mms or you cant,l water is very unlikely to effect the radio "some" of the time, if the device is dried out its highly unlikely that opening it up will make any difference other than the fact you will have a broken phone that now looks like you've opened it up as well.
first things first, id format the thing and see if that works, its not beyond reason to suggest that perhaps the phone was doing something important before it took up scuba diving and perhaps it didn't get to finish it meaning corrupt files etc, if it doesn't, you could leave it in a warm dry environment for a day or so to make sure it is completely dry, if its still buggered you'll be pretty much screwed, there is minimal user serviceable parts inside, esp to do with the radio.

I take my focus s apart almost weekly when I'm bored watching tv haha. Once you have all the screws removed, slide your finger nail between the glass of the screen and the bezel and pull away from the screen. The whole back side is snapped onto the screen and internal components. While applying pressure to the back with the battery removed helps a lot. Just note that the speaker will stay inside the plastic backing and can be popped out if needed. From what I'm willing to try, I've removed both cameras, antenna, and a few other things I forget. Overall it comes apart really easy and goes together just as easy. Good luck!

Hi
Recently i connected my Focus S a data cable damaged and made me a curt circuit in the power adapter, which it broke down the device.
The repair was very simple and the device is simple to open.
This is what i replaced:

See the photos you see how to disassemble the device.
