[Q] SMS Display problems - HTC Sensation XL

Hello All,
I just received my HTC XL in the post this morning - what a beauty!
I am experiencing some issues with my SMS messaged I am hoping someone on here can help me with. Some information that may help:
*I am using the standard messaging app
*My contacts were synced from google
Problem: When someone send me a text message its displayed like this:
Bill (M +61 4672 .... ) Hey how are you
Why does it show that its the mobile number then displays the mobile number? This is really strange and doesn't need to be there. I have look on the display options on the phone and not seen any option to disable this. What is even more strange that it only happens with certain numbers so other messages come out like i would expect them too
Jane: How are you
Anyone else experienced this? I have looked at the contacts to see if it was the way i was storing them, both of them listed at Mobile, and both had the international code in front +61
finally, I am aware people recommend handcent and other messaging apps - at the moment i would like to stay away from that and try to get this working.
I have tried going into google contacts and making sure the numbers are assigned to “Mobile” or “Home” Making sure all my numbers are consistent i.e +61 and no spaces. Still no luck. It is so annoying as I know it’s a little change I have to make as it works for some contacts
any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

It shows the number because Bill (to use your example) has more than one phone number stored in his contact. The messaging app therefore shows you which number the conversation is with.
Jane obviously only has one number in her contact, so it doesn't need to tell you which number you have sent it to, because she only has one.
this is how it works on mine, anyway.
People can have many numbers, and you can send SMS messages to landlines as well these days (well, in some places) so it is beneficial to know which phone you are sending messages to.
If i were to send an SMS to my friend with a very offensive joke, I doubt he'd be too happy if I sent it to his work mobile, that his company have full access to, so it's good to know I'm sending it to his personal number instead.
Don't worry, it's not playing up or doing anything wrong, it's doing exactly what it is supposed to.

Hi Mate, Thanks for the reply.
I think its a buf of some sort with the default message app. I understand what you are explaining but this should not be normal behavior - when I go to select someone (e.g Bill) it should prompt me for which number i want to text (i.e home or work)
Anyway - i have looked through the phonebook and this happens when someone just has a mobile number and no other numbers. Funnily enough if i enter a new contact using the phone (and even adding several numbers) it works as normal (just showing the name followed by the message) so most of the contacts that have come through on google sync has this problem - i think this is where the issue comes from.
any other ideas? does it work on yours?
Cheers

All my contacts come from google also. But mine does as i explained above. if the contact has more than one number saved to the name, it shows which number the text was received from.
If the contact only has one number saved to their name, it just shows their name.
Can't say i've ever noticed it do any different. Pretty sure my previous HTC phones with Sense did the same, but can't say i ever paid that much attention to it. I receive the messages, so afaik it is working properly.

I have a different problem. My sxl doesn't seem to receive messages anymore at all. I tried to send myself messages as it was bizarre that I didn't receive messages anymore but nope. They don't get to me. I got a rooted phone though didn't play around too much. Anybody knows how to get rid of this problem???

you tried a different SIM? Just to rule out the network having an issue?

Thanks for the quick reply.
It is definitely not consistant as I have just checked again and it only happens with some of the numbers. This is the 3rd HTC phone I have had and its never been like this.
For me, showing the number on the text conversation is useless - when your SMSing someone you will almost always use their mobile.
anyway thanks for assisting - i will try digging around for the solution. I really dont want to use handcent or any other sms app as they tend to slow it down!

Unfortunately my phone has a sim lock. I conntacted my provider (am in France w Orange as carrier) and they told me from their site everything's ok, I doubt it though as my sms don't arrive. Ruined my weekend that sh**.... I tried a different sms app (go sms pro) didn't work either.

I noticed in an earlier post you said it was rooted?
Did SMS work before the root or did you not check?
Maybe go back to stock as using a RUU replaces the radio. Not that this should be affected, but it's always good to go back to the start and work forward

It worked fine being rooted w/o any problems. I think this started a couple if days ago, the phone though was rooted for some time now but yea maybe I should go back to basics... I wish I could avoid that though.

No probs. Are any of the contacts linked to other sources like FB, Plurk, Twitter, SIM, etc?
---------- Post added at 12:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:24 PM ----------
If it's locked, do any of your family or friends have an orange FR SIM you can try just for 5 minutes?
See if their SIM will receive SMS while in your Phone. If their SIM works and yours doesn't, then thats a pretty conclusive proof it's a F-up on your SIM.
Unfortunatley, then it's back to arguing with Orange to get someone to accept this and look into it.

Maybe just try a clean install of the ROM you are using first. That may solve it, if you haven't done that already.

Well, its definitely not a sim card problem. I will try to reinstall my Rom maybe its going to change. Point is I can send msgs w/o problems and when people send me msgs their delivery report sais I received them, they just don't show up in my msgs. Fingers crossed that flashing a new Rom will make it work...

[Q] Not receiving some texts at random

Basically, I receive texts, and can send them fine. But from experiences, I don't get some replies. So I sent a text to a girl I know who replies, and she didn't. So I text asking if she replied, and she said she had. I do sometimes not get the text for a while, and then the next reply I get the previous.
I have heard many reasons as to why and fixes, but none have worked. Some to do with simply being rooted, others a non UK baseband, or a miss match with build prop. No real solutions have come up, only these possible causes.
I am in the UK, on Orange, have 3 or 4 bars (although that has nothing to do with signal strength) and on CM9.
Any help appreciated, hope someone replies unlike some other topics on here, and my texts!

Wow - this is EXACTLY the same problem I have.
I discovered it in September last year. Had trouble even explaining to my network (Meteor in Ireland) that this was happening and to be honest they just didn't believe me. I gave them a list of examples that they checked out and they said that every single one had gone through successfully.
In the interests of research I've been using an old Nokia phone for the last 3 weeks. Twice I asked friends to text me and let me know if I didn't reply. Not one single text was missed. So, it indeed looks like a problem with the Galaxy.
I'm running a rooted SGS with Darkys Rom so I'm going to spend some time today doing a hard reset and stuff but that's just a shot in the dark.
HAS ANYBODY FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE??
I'm not sure if that's the same! Mine is with receiving texts! I will send one, not receive a reply, so ask if they did reply nd they reply saying they did!
I have heard its being routed that is the problem...
I've also had a thought that it might be the fact my number has changed Sim cards for so many years now, that might be the problem!
Also, my SMS center is reset. Set via gosms now!

No, it's exactly the same. Absolutely 100% exactly the same.
(The point I made about my replying to texts was to do with my "test": I asked my friends to send me texts and I told them I'd reply to every single one immediately; if I didn't reply to a text it meant that the other person would know that I probably didn't get it. A very effective test actually.)

[Q] HTC Sensation XL is running slow

Hi all
I've scoured the net for an answer to this, but all I seem to get is root/flash/mod stuff that I honestly don't fully understand.
QUESTION: All I want to know is WHY IS MY PHONE RUNNING SLOW(er) than my old SGS. That was rooted and flashed with 2.2 when I couldn't get an update but knocked out my WIFI and bluetooth so I won't be doing that again.
When I open task manager, I have 591MB available RAM (should it not be 712MB as advertised???) - 500MB of which is constantly in use. Therefore, leaving me with on average 100MB of RAM for useage. I have pretty much removed every app I have downloaded, turned the phone off and back on, removed the battery but to no avail. Even stopping running processes doesn't speed it up.
FYI I have also turned off all settings humanly possible (which is pretty much limited to animations and auto brightness)
All in all, with a 1.5ghz processor as opposed to a 1ghz processor on my SGS I should expect flawless performance, especially after such a good run with a lower spec phone.
Apologies for the rant but I want to give as much info as possible and I am sick to death of this phone already (i'm 3 or so weeks into my new contract)
Any help would be greatly appreciated (i'm sure one of you h-core android users can point me in the right direction)
Thanks in advance.
which rom you using right now? firmware or custom?
and what do you mean by "slow" ?
slow perfomance? slow response? not smooth enough?
my XL works perfectly fine and very smooth, and i am using RcMix's rom, no problem at all.
I dont think a normal XL has such issues that you mentioned, it could be your hardware's problem, try send it back for fixing, or just replace a new one if your warranty is still on.
712 MB, no. some of it is not user accessible, so it's not shown. perfectly normal. and 100MB spare should b plenty. That amoutn that is in use alreeady includes the sense UI.
Network branded?
Widgets on the home screens?
Mine only has 400MB used, and that's with loadsa crap installed and the music player running...
But don't fear the custom ROMS, if the Wi-Fi and BT went, either it was a dodgy ROM (or it was still being done), or something went wrong during the flash. These things happen but can usually be fixed.
Thanks for the replies. I am currently running stock firmware pre installed, have removed all widgets bar weather clock/power bar/YouTube bar and only have 2 home screens. Thats about it! but you really shouldn't have to on what's considered a high end phone, no?
It's slow between screens (animations are off), loading apps and the music player is choppy. They're the only real gripes I can pick off the top off of my head.
Do roms make much of a difference?
Am I expecting too much from a "high end " android?
I'm on o2

I hasten to add the question: Do you need to effectively "wear in" such devices? I do recall a speed issue with my old laptop before I gave it a good few hours with multiple programs on the go.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e using XDA App
If u are talking bout the animation, yes its abit laggy when i got mine but i don think its big issue for me
Perhaps the next ICS will improve if u plan to update firmware
Sent from my HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e using XDA App
Animations are always worth turning off.
Bear in mind that any widget you have running will have the program running in the background.
the fact you have so much in use suggests maybe O2 have installed some crap maybe?
Have you got it sycnhing for email avery five minutes or so?
Yeah, i suspect there's some bloat installed maybe?
Just reset mine and am showing 581 total, but only 309MB used, over 270MB free.
i have stripped a few bits out of my ROM however....
That was a good shout with the email sync. Have changed it to once a week but it still hasn't made much difference. Chances are o2 have installed ****e on here that I can't access, they're not as good as I previously thought.
Ifi don't get any joy by the time I've installed the march release of ICS I'm getting rid and going for the SGS2. I don't trust roms anymore.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e using XDA App
custom roms are smooth, u might want to try it.
I wouldn't let one bad experience put you off. I've been flashing and doing stuff since the old Qtek S100 back in 2003/2004. Yeah, occasionally things go a bit awry, but it's rarley not able to be fixed. I've never had a bricked device yet, although one or two may have been run over....
I didn't brick my sgs luckily. I just knocked out WiFi capability which really annoyed me. But funilly enough, today my phone seems to have sped right up. Now have an average of 170mb free ram which is almost double. I dont know what I've done, bit it seems to have worked. I reckon I just needed to wear my phone in like I did my laptop. Im fairly impatient with loading times etc haha.
I think I'm gonna wait til march when ics is released and if its crap then I'll revisit mods again.
Thanks for your help and everyone else who posted.

Sounds like a dodgy ROM to me.
for it to do that suddenly, I wonder if you had signed into HTC Sense....that thing takes DAYS to do it's first sync sometimes.
hard resetting will solve this prob//
i have problem after factory reset is solved ,but as soon as start using dailer app ,phone restarts after dailing ,if use wifi for browsing etc in aeroplane mode every things is simply fine .
had tried flashing few roms already ,has any one solved this isssue ?
i have found that the phone sometimes "bottlenecks" and goes stupid for a few mins, but killing all running apps, and locking and unlocking the phone, makes it act normal again!

[Q] Call Waiting

Can anyone tell me of an app whereby when I call someone and they're on the phone, my phone tells me. I know Samsung's Touchwiz does this. HTC doesn't do it with Sense though and I'm running CM which doesn't do it either.
Bump?
Sent from my Incredible S using Tapatalk 2 Beta-5
AFAIK, Android does not have that feature. Samsung and Sony add that by themselves
It actually sucks to think that something so basic is patent encumbered. I'm guessing that's why I'm also yet to find an app to provide this missing functionality.

In terms of non-Android I know Nokia does and I was surprised to be told that Apple doesn't. Am really quite gutted that this can't be done with a simple app.
It works on my Inc s. I've enabled call wait from my service provider, so when I'm on a call and someone else calls, I get a series of beeps with the other caller number or contact data flashed on my phone. I just have to accept, reject or ignore the second call and the first caller gets into hold... its all available on your phones too, you only need to enable it in call settings and of course, with your service provider too

That's the wrong way round. I have mine enabled for people calling me. But what I'm referring to with this thread is a notification to say that when I call someone else, I'm alerted to the fact that they're already on a call.
@Sabret00the
Wouldn't that be a function that the person you're calling, needs to enable with his service provider? I usually get a recorded message saying that the person you are calling is on another call... wait for him to respond, or hang up & dial later. The phone displays number busy... isn't that so? Or then I'm confused....
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA
Nope. It's a standard feature for Samsung's, Sony's and Nokia. If I ring from my IncS and someone is on the phone, it just rings normally. If I ring from a Samsung it states on screen that "the person you're dialling is on a call".

[Q] HTC "Test Device" - should I be worried?

Hi there. I have sent my HTC One back for repair after my camera started talking purple pictures. It just came back today, reset to default settings. But when I turned it on, it gave me a following text in red on the "HTC Tell" page:
" Notwithstanding the above statement, this is a Test Device. Tell HTC is automatically enabled and cannot be disabled. By participating in the trial, you understand and agree that HTC will collect information from and about you and your device, including personally identifiable information, such as your name, phone number, precise location, email address, device id and imei""
I have contacted HTC about this using their chat service, and they said nothing they done could have caused this, so it must have been a test device before - but I bought it from a local carrier on contract, so how?
The bootloader status is "locked, S-OFF". It might be S-OFF because I flashed it with official 4.3 before it became officially available here in the UK, but I honestly don't remember changing this setting.
Should I worry about this notice? Is my phone really sending all my personal details to HTC? Is there anything I can do about it?

It's due to being S-Off. The device itself is not a "test device" just the S-Off triggers that on stock ROMs.
As to being worried, it's only Error reporting (ie when the phone or app crashes)... i personally couldn't care less.
Then again someone said, "how am i supposed to know they only collect info on crashes, i don't trust them", that's his choice of course, but if they wanted to collect information, they wouldn't need to tell you about it in the first place.
And who collects (and shares) more information, Google, your provider, or HTC and not mentioning the three letter agencies
Unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and ROM, you can get rid of the Tell HTC app and use it normally, if you're worried
If your phone is s off don't worry about it. You can do much more with it now

Having Issue With Stock Contacts App!

For some reason, when I try to edit my contacts in the stock Contacts app, I get that stupid "Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped" message. Does anyone know why this is happening, and perhaps how to fix it? I tried deleting the data & cache and force stopping it, but nothing works. I did end up getting a more stable contacts app called Contacts +, but I'd still like to get this resolved anyway.
Thanks.

I C. That's cool.
I may just use Xperia Companion to reinstall the software then.
But will using Xperia Companion to "repair" the phone's software mean it installs the INTERNATIONAL firmware, or the US? lol If I get the US firmware then I'd have to get the software to reinstall the fingerprint software too b/c we both know Sony Mobile idiotically decided not to give the US version that.
It will install whatever you currently have on the device.

Yeah....... it could be any of those. It was suggested to me to just wait and Sony may very likely send an update to fix it. I'm using Contacts + for now and it's been working just fine.

Ok so it's not just me. lol I also did a repair with XC and yeah still not letting me edit contacts. I'm not sure what to do but for now I'm just gonna use Contacts + until it's fixed. If you figure out a way to fix it, please let us know.
I also notice Google Messenger, which always worked before on my Z3 and S7, doesn't work so well for MMS messages on the XP. In group texts, the recipients I send to would get my group response AND the same response would be sent to each one individually. But I went back to using Textra which is also great and now at least that issue's been resolved.

gclancer,
Ok so it's not just me. lol I also did a repair with XC and yeah still not letting me edit contacts. I'm not sure what to do but for now I'm just gonna use Contacts + until it's fixed. If you figure out a way to fix it, please let us know.

Tks Rockstar. I am actually using simpler dialer and contact app for now. I just find it stupid that my X works perfectly and the more expensive XP doesnt. Hopefully an update will fix it.

YW gclancer!
Yeah that is some BS. One guy on here who bought the int'l XP from the same retailer as I did said he doesn't have that problem anymore after using XC (he did initially though), but we still do. Don't get it, but yeah.........hopefully an update is sent out SOON by Sony to resolve this matter.

So I loaded both the X and XP with the same apps and it turns out the speed difference are pretty minimal despite having different processors. I am seriously considering selling the XP and just keep the X. But yeah hopefully an update will be out soon to fix your problem. I am using the X now and maybe its a keeper for me lol

My contacts app is working fine on the xp. Granted I started the phone through initial set up as a new phone. Not restoring any back ups during the initial process. I went to the contacts app and it was working correctly then I imported from Google account after the fact.

gclancer,
Yeah but for me, it's not just about the speed. I love having the IP65/68 rating as I sometimes have to take calls while in the shower (I leave phone near bathroom door, not in shower lol). I'll step out and take them with wet hands and face......so for me, the XP is a must since the X doesn't have that feature. Being slightly faster is not a big deal, you're right there........but I'd still prefer it.

MGS,
Yeah the 2nd time around (maybe 1st too?), which was when I used XC, I made sure to choose the option to set up as a new phone too. I didn't really have any backups to restore anyway, so this was the only option. Yet when I went to the Contacts app it still wouldn't let me edit random contacts, though everything else worked fine with it. So not sure but since everything else is fine with phone, I'm just gonna let it go since I now use Contacts + anyway and it's much more stable.
I have been having the same issues. I have tried factory resetting it different ways. The sony bridge repair tool does not even list the Xperia X Performance on its list of phones yet. So, that's a bummer. There's this site that gives you 4 ways to do a hard reset. However, on the 4th method where you are asked to download Sony's flash tool, the X Performance isn't even listed on the supported devices.
I do wish that Sony sends a fix immediately.
mac,
I returned the phone (which had other issues too) to my Amazon seller (NGP) and the replacement they sent me this morning came ALREADY set up. Normally I would be mad about that, but the Contacts app WORKED! Didn't close out when I tried to edit it. I wanted to make sure it was fixed though, so I did a factory reset, and ughh........ it's not working now again. I e-mailed NGP and asked them to tell me what they did. I hope they can tell me so I can do it too and fix this. I will keep this thread posted.
You're right, it's very annoying! MGS told me he factory resetted but didn't use backup during setup or even log in with Google account, and it worked for him. But when I tried that........nope! Even tried creating a new account, and nope! Very weird, but again I hope NGP can tell me what they did.
Mine seem to work alright, I can edit the phone number and or contact details.

I did factor reset, in the store, I just briefly set the phone to test it for dead pixels and other functions, after that I reseted it to do fully setup with my own data.
