[Q] Optimum MicroSD Card for Galaxy Note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
For use with Galaxy NOTE (GT-N7000) Which Memory Card Should I get ?
Hoping to order one over ebay next week.
* 16GB or 32GB ? (Larger the better, but I need to know whether the note will handle 32GB)
* Which Class ? (4, 6 or 10 ?)
Thanks !

yes it will handle 32gb, it will also handle 64gb cards
it is your choice on what size you get it is your requirementrs that decide this
i havea 32gb class 4 card and it suits my needs, class 10 are wasted in mobile phones

I also heard Note can handle 64GB MicroSD, though it's very expensive atm.
Sandisk Class 4 32GB would be an optimal choice for its price, quality and speed.

Samsung 32GB Class 10 for around $50CDN shipped on eBay. Performance is quite good.

It's newly released so not many people have their hands on. Got a lot of features which is kind of appealing to me lol :d.
Just that I read somewhere Class 4 provide much better handle than Class 10 at reading random data, while Class 10 excels at writing large files. So if you want to transfer lots of space then Class 10 would be better.
One more thing, the Class X only tells the minimum speed, while the maximum speed depends on the card make, brand, technology...
After searching online, I assume Sandisk is the best.

Over here class 4 and class 10 cards are almost the same price so I just went with a 16GB class 10 myself. Working just fine, though I didn't expect it not to anyways.

Indeed. My class 10 can write at 16 megabytes/second (not megabits!) and read at 20 megabytes/second, it's just that the specification is several years old and they defined speeds only up to class 10.

+1 I have one in my note and it is fine

Class 4:
High sequential read speed/medium sequential write speed
Good random 4k_Thread read/write speed (needed to initialize some system relevant data faster that's why SSD on PC can boot so much faster than HDD)
Class 10:
High sequential read/write speed (if you copy media files very often that's the one for you)
Good random 4k_Thread read speed/very very VERY horrible random write speed
Both don't have Problems recording HD material on note and also playing them.
Remember : higher class doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

Thanks a lot for the input guys !!
Samsung 32GB Class 10 it is then..

How about Sandisk Mobile Ultra 32Gb Class 6 and I think the performance is above the Samsung Class 10?

I've heard lots of good things about Sandisk lately..

I only have files I rarely use on the 'external' card. These are usually large files like mp3 or videos. As such I went for the Lexmark 32 GB class 10. It does the job very well.
Everything I access often is on the 'internal' sd to save battery.

buy samsung class 6 32gb microsd card
its cheaper & optimum for note
I own too.
It works like a charm

Memory Card Benchmarks 2gb v 16gb

All,
Just thought i'd let you know the benchmarks I got from the exisiting 2gb card and a new 16gb card I've bought.
The card I've bought is the new Sandisk Class 4 Ultra micro sdhc which cost me £50 from Amazon.co.uk. I was a bit sceptical at first as the 2gb seemed quite fast so wondered what class it was as it doesn't say and I didn't want the new card to be slower. But I went ahead and bought it anyway as i needed the space.
Both cards are formatted to fat32 with 4096 of allocation
So, CrystalDiskMark benchmarks...
100mb file, 3 passes...
Code:
100mb file Sandisk 2gb Sandisk 16gb
Read Write Read Write
Sequential 10.67 6.639 19.93 16.57
Random Write 512k 10.55 1.261 19.52 2.634
Random Write 4k 2.822 0.010 3.984 0.026
Speeds are in MB/s
Quite a bit faster than I was expecting, so quite happy about this. I know there will be some hardware limitations in the phone so it can only read / write at certain speeds, but for taking pictures, it can save the images quicker and thats a plus for me. Plus the reading of data in music player etc...
Hope it helps some people

quite an impressive hike in write speeds.
I did wonder about the transcend class 6 they have for £55 but then I realised it said 2-3 months expected delivery !
In the end I bought the PNY 16gb card from play for £26 it's supposed to be a class 4 I'll benchmark it when it arrives.
quite impressive
congrats mate for the new card
However, i guess it makes more sense if the larger card volume was a bit slower!
Anywayz, doesnt the bigger card have any negative effect on the battery in terms of consuming more power to mount the storage volume?
Interesting - I have a 16Gb Class 6 on it's way - should be here next week. I'll try and run the benchmarks for it and see if there is much difference.
would be nice if someone could try the class 2 sandisk 16 gb
how did you do the benchmark?

Sorry guys, but I don't get it. If you buy a card to use it with your Leo these tests are pretty irrelevant. I tested myself several cards, 2GB, 4GB and 16GB, class 2 and 4, both in my PC using ATTO benchmark and in my Leo. I came to the conclusion that a class 2 micro SD card is plenty fast enough when reading/writing with the Leo, so what is the point of spending a little fortune on class 6 cards? The Leo is no high-end DSLR you know...
Using happily a 16GB Sandisk that I purchased in my local PC shop for about 35 Euros. The Leo peaks at 5.2/8.6 MB/s write/read with this card. It did exactly the same with a class 4 4GB Toshiba card and a 2GB class 4 Kingston card. Tested using ATTO Disk Benchmark v. 234 on a core i7 system running Windows 7 64 bit OS.
In my view, the ATTO benchmark is reat because it gives you a speed snapshot at different file sizes, not just the peaks. I wonder what file size is used when manufacturers clasify their cards. Let me tell you, when transfering files smaller that 1 KB, they're all bloody snails, from class 2 to class 12!

I hear that, took ages to delete Igo8 off the SD card with all those small files
I prefer the faster cards, say class 4 or even a class 2 if it can perform like this current class 4 because I don't just use it in my phone. I use the card reader and transfer music / videos / pictures etc and with the clip battery cover, it only takes a minute to hot swap.
I know what you mean though, the phone does have limitations which make the cards only work to a certain speed, thats the same in most devices.
All in all though, nice to get some comparisons on here for people who want to know before they buy
16gb card came from play today.
It is class 2, clearly marked as such, so either they are sending out from different sources or something is up.
Either way it's a pretty quick card, I'll benchmark it later on
I was waiting for a 32gb card to be released but that doesn't look like it is going to happen any time soon...
So I am buying a 16gb card. I am going to be using the card in my phone only. Out of these 2 cards which would recommend -
16gb Kingston class 4 or a 16gb Peak class 6 (for a couple of pounds extra)
Part of me wants to go for the class 6 for the speed (but will I really notice it in a phone?) but on the other hand Kingston is a well known brand and I have never heard of Peak.
Thanks
What would you say is the minimum class that i could get a decent experience when playing music/movies and launching apps?
A class 2 card would do the job nicely.
Thanks, will probs get a class 2 16GB one

Took your advice and bought the 16gb one you recommended from play too in the hope it was Class4. No idea what Class it actually is but its definately quicker than the previous 2Gb, and 8Gb cards I had in it! - I can tell cus when I wizz through the photos in landscape mode they appear almost instantly whereas the other cards took time to load them up. or maybe thats cus of this new ROM - I'm not sure.....hmmm....

[Q] MicroSD cards

So where are the good deals on MicroSD cards? I'm interested in at least Class4. What are you using with your GTabs?
I was wanting to hold out for a class 4 or better 32gb, but I don't think the included 16gb is going to last me much longer on it's own.
I have a class 6 8gb transcend card for backup that seems to read and write very well on the tab.
I usually just use google search and click on shopping to find good prices since they change constantly.
Thanks for the advice, I did see that shopping.google.com was probably the best way to find good deals.
Does anyone have any experience using a class 10 microSD in their GTab?

Speed Class Rating
The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. The Class number represents a multiple of 8 Mbit/s (1 MB/s), and it measures the minimum sustained write speeds for a card in a fragmented state.[11]
The following are the ratings of some currently available cards:[11]
Class 0 - These cards do not specify performance, which includes all legacy cards prior to class specifications.
Class 2 - Minimum of 2 MB/s performance. Lowest speed for SDHC cards.
Class 4 - Minimum of 4 MB/s performance.
Class 6 - Minimum of 6 MB/s performance.
Class 10 - Minimum of 10 MB/s performance.
Keep in mind that the class is based off WRITE speeds. I have a class 10 in my Vibrant, but only a class 2 in my Tab. That is because I tend to change what I carry on my phone more often than my tablet and thus it is noticeable. But if you are just going to load up 4 gigs of music and 8 gigs of movies and never change it, go with a cheap card.

I just ordered a 16GB class 6 for my Tablet. I'll probably be swapping out movies on a semi-regular basis, so didn't want to get just a class2.
Got a class 4 32GB from NewEgg. Works quite well and exceeds the rated transfer speed most of the time.
I'm using the Sandisk Class 2 32GB card and it's great. Sandisk cards always perform better at read & write speeds than the stated.
You're not going to notice any difference in speed..... not until you connect to a PC that is the only time when you will find a Class 2 is slower than a Class 6.
Using a class 2 16gb and seems to working fine

[Q] About SD Card

Hello
I got my Legend about 2 months ago, and I have a big problem with storage space...
What is the biggest sized SD card the Legend can use?
What is the type of SD card (micro, mini, etc...)
What is SD card class?
Thank you very much
microSD compliant with SD2.0 Standard (aka microSDHC)
The biggest size available currently is 32GB.
I don't know if even more is possible with microSDHC or if bigger cards will only be possible with SD3.0 (aka SDXC) but that question is not relevant as you can't buy any greater then 32GB yet.
The Class of the SDCard is a measurement for guaranteed minimum speed in random read/write.
The Class does not provide any information about real-world speed or max speed.
For your mobile phone the class is a pretty useless criterion as you don't need any guaranteed minimum speeds but good overall speeds ESPECIALLY sequential.
The guaranteed minimum speed is important for HD Video Cameras for example where you write data all the time at a given speed (resolution).
thanks.
but I DO need class with high speed because I want to use Data2Ext...
Don't pick uSD card based on class !! class tels you MB/s for sequential write only... you need a card that is overall fast, I had 16GB class 10 Kingston and data2ext was just horrible!
Now I'm with class 4 Sandisk mobile ultra and it is in fact faster in every test I ran...
So read reviews before you buy
ye but that is exactly why im asking...
well then, I recommend sandisk mobile ultra as I have it and it is OK, there are probably faster cards...just see the small files read / write speeds in reviews those are of greatest importance
i purchased a kingston 8GB class 4 which crapped out. android kept reported sdcard unexpectedly removed. tried all sorts (formatting in windows, android, quick, long, etc).
RMA replacement did exactly the same, so i'm guessing kingston class 4's are best avoided.
If I recall correctly I have a 16GB microSDHC Class 4 card. After applying data2ext with this card, my Quadrant scores hit around 1500, which is crazy.
This is where I found my card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-16G...P06K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298984123&sr=8-1
I personally recommend this card.

[Q] Minimum micro SD class for the galaxy note

Hi guys, I am about to purchase my galaxy note next week and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light into the matter..
Which class of micro sd card should I buy? (minimum) I was hoping to get a 64gb but if that would underperform, there would not be much of a sense to it.
The maximum reading/writing I will be doing in the note is probably playing 1080p playback + mirroring it to the tv. maybe some hi definition video recording as well straight to the memory card.. but most often than not, I would play a 720p mkv movie.
Would a class 4 suffice? Any suggestions on which brands I should look at / stay away from?
Class 4 of any decent brand should suffice.
Class 2 cards from Sandisk will also suffice (their read/write speeds are enough for 1080p encoding and decoding). May be a hassle if you regularly transfer a lot of data to and from the card since thats the time when the slower R/W speeds will come into play.
Why get anything less than class 10? If you can afford a Note, you should be able to spare another $20 for a fast sdcard...
class 10 cards can cost upwards of $80 for an 8gig card.

i picked up my class 10 a-ram 32gb microsd for $49.95AU + shipping.
it really depends on what you plan to use your note for. if youre filming 1080p video at the default 17mbps, thats about 2mb/s that you'd want minimum for just filming. so any speed should be fine as long as its above class 2. i just prefer faster cards since theyre getting cheaper.

I've read class 10 doesn't always mean fastest read speed or something to that effect. Not always beneficial to get a class 10 since it writes faster but doesn't always means it reads faster. Someone else can probably elaborate for me.

normally read speeds of class 10 are still higher than write speeds. but the read speeds dont really vary much between classes. my kingston class 10 reads at 12mb/s, my a-ram class 10 reads at 14mb/s, my sandisk class 2 reads at 10mb/s. so if all you need is read speed, then any card will do.
even class 2 or 4 on Sandisk it will work fine. i believe just buy a good make one ( not a fake from China ) , but i bought mine Lexar class 10 and work great , i couldnt be happier.

It doesn't necessarily write faster either!
All the class indicates is the minimum sustained write speed under optimal (i.e. unfragmented) conditions. It says nothing about the read speed, which is what is generally important in mobile devices since they are usually used for content consumption rather than creation.
As NZtechfreak has already mentioned, Sandisk Class 2 cards almost always well exceed the class minimums - I've been using 16gb Sandisk Class 2 cards in my phones for a long time now, and I've yet to get one that had a write speed less than the Class 6 minimum of 6MB/s, and the read speed has always been 20MB/s or above.

Dave
A good read why Class 4 cards are the best ones to use for your smartphone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14456360&postcount=42
I started out with a Kingston Class 2 32GB I had laying around, and then switched to a Class 10 32GB made by PNY that I got from Microcenter for $59.95.
There was a very noticeable difference in photo taking lag and the media scanner, plus app access on the card. Now there is almost no photo lag, from snap to saving. Haven't messed with the video much yet...
I've Samsung class 10 32 gb. It's really good, but my device started rebooting because of it. "System Process has stopped working."
What I found out is that after removing my micro sd my device is a hell FASTER than before!!!
Maybe a faulty micro sd, no since it works fine in my pc and other devices.
I want to check does any of you have the same problem???

Not using a2sd or anything like that.
higher class = higher write/read speed
plus,if you like customize your rom, it's better if you have a >=6 class sd card

No. Higher class = higher minimum write/read speed.
You can try get a legendary Class 10 Micro SD with more than 8GB
Belive me, it will be your best upgrade purchase for the OB
Actually I have a Micro SD Adata Class 10 16GB. On my daily usage, I noticed better performance from games that requiere SD data storage and better speed for tranfer files via usb. On my experience, 1GB in 1:30min!!! Well that's when i'm transfer a unique .rar file, if you try with a folder of same size it takes a little more time
Another thing, if you're a gamer, trust me... you must get a 16Gb micro SD at least, because the heavy graphics games (like newest Gameloft Games) have very heavy quantity of data. Only with the downloadable data of Nova2, Asphalth 6, MC3, Street Fighter IV, FIFA12 and Real Racing2 you fill a MicroSD 8GB!!! D: but they are very good games ;D
Well, I hope this info will help you and if I was on your shoes... I hurt you!!! XD jajaja just kindding but seriously think about grab a better SD class with more than 8Gb ok... well you have the better choice. Regards from Mexico
PD. Sorry about my bad English T-T
defintely use higher class (min. class 6)... you will gain a benefit when loading/copying large amount of data. agree with above.
Class - Speed
2 - 2 MB/s
4 - 4 MB/s

Those are the minimum speeds, the class doesn't say anything about maximum speeds. It is possible for a lower class card to reach higher speeds than a higher class card. It should not be possible for a card of a given class to go slower than the class minimum.
I had the common lag in camera recording...when I changed to samsung 32GB class 10 all went fine , that was still in froyo. I got it for only 27€ in an spanish online shop called "pccomponentes".

The Classes are the speed to write on SD, If You have a class 4 is better than 2, but maybe is more expensive.

It's a good dilema, space vs speed. As others have said if you are a gamer go for speed. If you just have music a pictures on your SD and are patient then go for size.

Yeah, I suggest too to choose a class 10 if you are a gamer, a lower class if you're not.
But I don't suggest you to use a SD wich is less than class 4. Class 4 for in my opinion is the lower class to consider, others are too slow even for photos. Your device may suffer of this (be very slow)
