[Discussion] Opera Mobile 10

Added the tag at the start so people didn't think it was available here yet
So I'm sure many people have seen the news

This, along with the new Google Maps navigation, are probably the two things I've always wanted from my phone. I've wanted to ditch the standard, slow, messy default Android browser for so long, and finally it looks like we're getting a decent replacement, albeit, not easily it looks.
I'm really hoping this arrives to the G1, fingers crossed it won't be too tied in to new phones that it won't be portable.
Eagerly awaiting a leak of this one .

Just download the Dolphin Browser from the market, its a fantastic browser and has google bookmark syncing so all you bookmarks will be there if you use Chrome on your pc. it has tabbed browsing and its themeable (if thats a word).

Dolphin is surely great but i really want to give a try to opera too, i used the beta 10 on my previous hd2 and it was really sweet!
Hope to see it soon.
I noticed that dolphin sync with google import the single bookmarks but not the folders, so they are all mixed up, am i doing something wrong?

hey guys. got my SGS today, loving it. and been playing with it since 5 hours non stop now lol
anyways, coming from a nokia n900, im used to the browser showing sites in full web version, not mobile version.
is it possible somehow to make it appear like that in SGS browser too?

go to the browser url bar, and type about:debug and enter.
nothing will happen, but now you can go to the browser settings from the menu, and scroll all the way down. there will be new menu options there. find the one which allows you to choose between desktop/android/iphone display for websites.
this is a little bugged, because for me after i did this from a fresh rom installation, i can access espn soccernet perfectly. but if i revisit the page it will load up the mobile version.
to view desktop pages permanently try skyfire browser from the market.

p.s i tried youtube.com desktop version. upload loading the video, the browser crashes. and kicks me to home screen.
so i suppose some sites are not quiet ready to be run n desktop mode on SGS.
perhaps froyo wioth 10.1 flash will solve this

Oddly enough with the stock browser and present 2.2 you cannot access the User Agent setting with About:debug.

Yea they removed it in 2.2, but why? I think it should be an option that is easy to access for everyone. This phone handles desktop sites almost as well as a PC, the big screen actually makes a lot of mobile sites look rubbish.
Sometimes we want mobile sites to save bandwidth, other times we want the full experience.
In Dolphin Browser HD you can get an addon called "Desktop Toggles" which adds a switch on the right toolbar for easy switching between desktop/mobile modes. With some performance and other small improvements it would be a perfect replacement for the stock browser.

One other annoyance with the stock browser is that even with it set to desktop you are still often sent to the "Touch" version of the site and then have to scroll to the bottom and click on full site link. Shame there is not a command line or script to set it to desktop proper.

With the screen real estate on the Galaxy S we should be given the option to view full desktop versions of websites. Often the mobile sites just don't cut it. We want the full version of websites on our phones.

I compared several pages and it the stock browser still feels like it scrolls smoother and loads considerably faster.
This IS a beta though so improvements in this regard are inevitable.
The fact that there is no Flash support hurts it just a bit too. Once Flash is completely eradicated from the web(I can't wait for that to happen, such a completely inefficient, performance hogging format) it'll be a non-issue though.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to change user-agent to desktop.
chrome://flags/ doesn't work. Some of the other chrome:// commands do, none of them have the option to change user-agent.

Does not load or have option to load pages in desktop mode. What is the point in a browser for tablets that loads pages as if they where on a phone.

In fairness, most web developers are taking a shortcut and assuming anything with "android" in the user-agent string is mobile instead of asking the browser for screen dimensions. This is bad but common practice.
The way which was finally added in the ICS browser to work around this is to change the user-agent string platform info to X11 instead of Android.
When you "request desktop site" this is what happens.
Site thinks is mobile: (Linux; U; Android 4.0.3; en-us; Build/ITL41F)
Site thinks is desktop: (X11; Linux x86_64)
This is an inelegant hack. (Though I am surprised it's missing from Chrome for Android)
Ideally, web developers will clue into the existence of tablets and properly handle things.

I find the stock ICS browser to be smoother and more fluid for me....

When people still design sites/apps for IE6 I wouldn't hold my breath.

Agreed with others here. Stock feels faster and smoother.
IMO its a terrible beta. No user string, no flash, bookmarks are terrible, colour theme doesn't fit with ICS..
Also, why does it exist? If it's only for ICS and above, why didn't they replace stock browser with it? I thought stock android browser was web kit and chrome based anyway.

Funnily enough, Chrome relys on the stock browser for half its settings

I installed it. Went to a few sites. Said cool. And now I'm back to using the stock browser.

I like it because my chrome bookmarks now sync, the feature never worked in Honeycomb or with the new ICS browser and I had to use the chromemarks app as a work around.
Its quite fast to use but it still needs a lot of work, flash, themes and extensions would be nice lolz

I think its not bad for a beta been using it on my phone for a few days now... Remember beta here.. We cant expect everything from your desktop onto your mobile device right now as with google they are going to add features as time comes... Personally i would like to see extentions work but most people would be like that

When i first downloaded chrome i used it a little then went back to ics + because i thought chrome was akward and hard to close tabs. I missed quick controls right off the bat because they are pretty ingenious and intuitive. Well since then i have only used chrome. I only use ics+ when i need to view flash. Chrome is fast, although it takes some effort to close tabs and open new ones. I can't wait for an update and all the things that are obvious (extensions, flash, quick controls). I love how android is growing up. I feel like a proud father watching it go from a small phone ui to now on the brink of blossoming out to all areas of life. By that i mean throughout our homes i.e. Google home integration. I don't think Google has any plans to support flash though with this browser. The HTML YouTube in this browser is fast an non buggy. I'm sure Google wants to keep their browser flash free so they can monopolize web m.

I think I have to agree with you, I've gone back to the ICS browser because it's better designed for touch screen devices. Chrome beta is quite fiddly to use with your fingers! lolz

Native Browser Speed vs Chrome

Hi All,
I have an observation on my Razr i that I wanted to check with whoever's interested.
I've been using the Chrome browser since I got the phone (4/5 months ago), and always thought it to be fast enough for my needs, but then tried using the native browser a couple of days ago and it seems significantly faster when scrolling & loading pages.
Because Chrome is regularly updated I figured it would the faster of the two, though the backlog of cookies etc could possibly slow it down? I like the additional features of Chrome so it would be sad to see it go, but now it's painful to go back!
If anyone would like to have a play and see what they think I'd find it interesting. I've had a look through the forum and can't find any related discussion, I believe I'm on the latest EU JB build.
Could it be that the native browser is better optimised for intel? I thought we got Chrome a little late because they were optimising it for X86.

Native browser always feels faster than chrome on other devices that I have tried, irrelevant of CPU architecture. There is just something in it that makes the scrolling and resizing look nicer. If someone can post some real data that would help -- but those have always been my impressions on different devices.

I agree stock browser is much faster than chrome and you can use flash player which chrome doesn't have and it still has some of the features chrome has like browser sync with my laptop ect

How's that bookmark sync with desktop (chrome) in native browser? I was never able to find that functionality (without 3rd party apps) in native browser, for me main reason to use Chrome on my phone..
Did I miss something, native bookmark sync in built in browser with desktop chrome? And if yes; how??

Here is some real data: I'm running SunSpider 0.9.1 on Stock ROM JB 4.1.2 Brazil Retail:
Native Browser (809ms) (During test my CPU use was around 50%)
Chrome (938ms) (During test my CPU use was around 70%)
PS: CPU Use information provided by app Cool Tool

My native browser syncs bookmarks from google chrome, including folders... Check that Browser Sync is checked at your (Android/System/Launcher)Settings-> Google Account -> (your google email showing when was the last sync) -> Internet

But, one more question: aside of speed issues; what are the added values of Chrome (visual effect, like flipping cards not counted) above build-in browser? Sync opened tabs with other devices is nice, but not essential for me; on the other hand, according to settings memory footprint of Chrome android is HUGE (as compared to native browser)..

Chrome is better in almost everything apart page rendering speed (the thing make it feels a bit laggy comparated to the stock browser), the only thing I miss is the pie control...
I do use both, for light pages chrome, for heavy ones, like facebook, stock browser...

New browser

Hi!
Im looking for a new browser for my P9. Been trying a few but it seems like all of them are missing important requirements that i want.
The browser should contain:
-AdBlock (that actually works)
-When closing the browser and start it again, it should start from default page and not the last visited.
-Incognito always on. Not necessary if theres a option to clear history when closing the app.
-Battery friendly
Dolphin is probably the choice, but i just cant seem to like it on Android. On iPhone it was pretty good.
Is there a option out there?

On PC and Android only Opera(Opera not Opera mini).
Opera is like chrome but dont suck so much resources and it have few handy features like: Compression mode, Build in AdBock AND VPN mode.
But best part is Battery life, compared to Chrome, no matter if its PC or Android you can get even 30-40% more time on it.
Also it have sync mode so you can browse sites on PC and finish it on Phone.
Sadly recent update literally F up look of Opera, but if you didnt use it before, you should not notice that, but I would suggest to switch to tablet view in settings, its WAY more comfortable to use it(even better if you change DPI in programming settings of phone to 320-380)
I would suggest giving it a try for week or two, with both on PC and Phone and after that you will notice how bad Chrome was in terms of performance and battery life.

I remember i used Opera on a old Android and was happy with it. Must say, i kinda like the new look of it. But is it not possible to remove the news feed? Also, the ad block doesnt work very well. And when closing Opera and starting it again it takes me to the last viewed page. Also, no incognito mode.

I am using Brave Browser, fastest than any others and as simple than chrome. AdBlock included.
No lag on the scrolling and it used the last chromium engine.
You can disable the startup page.

No incognito or option to delete history upon exit. Last visited page opens when restarting the browser. No good im afraid

Yes there is an incognito mode. But if you want to hide everything, inbrowser is maybe a good option.

It has, but i need to chose incognito every time i use the app. And in incognito i cant have my bookmarks. I tried inbrowser, but i didnt like it at all.
And i know.. im very stubborn :laugh:

Well it has night mode, it's super fast so no need to make it heavy with themes and other stuff.. Adblock built in, I think it's quite perfect

Opera HAVE incognito mode, and it show last visited site.
Incognito mode( its called "private" mode). It can be enabled by just clicking windows icon in phone mode, or in tablet mode: options icon in right corner->create new private tab.
As far as keeping last visited site. Hard to tell why you dont get it, because its one of features that I HATE personally, and its annoy me because opera always open last visited site AND all tabs in background.
Also feed main site can be changed to normal mode just by going to options and changing option: "set feed site as homepage" to disabled.

I'm using Dolphin browser on Android (P9) and I'm satisfied. It has all I need.

Have you looked at Nova browser. It seems quite popular with some P9 users.
