Lost my patience with Android - Off-topic

Had anyone here lost their patience with updates to android phones? I was an android fan. Peoples and manufactures tell us about all the possibilities it have, how open it was, all the features, all the promises.
But then i saw it was all a lie, when updates come with a half year or longer in delay. And developers cant do anything before a leak (im not blaming developers), so whats the deal with an open os?
My next phone is a windows mobile phone for sure.
(Yes, i have a galaxy note. Laggy as hell)

I just switched from Windows Phone ( HD7 ) to Galaxy Note. If you think the situation with updates looks any better on Windows Phone - you're wrong mate. Been waiting for Mango quite a long time - when it arrived, i had to flash a stock rom from other device cause they cut some features from it ( like internet sharing ) which are still oficially not there for some devices ( half a year later! ). There's next update Tango coming - which doesn't actually bring anything new except of low-end device support. And Apollo is scheduled for Q4 - and 1st gen devices "probably won't be getting it"
At least, with Android, you've got custom ROMs that get updated really quickly, big dev scene, the ability to install apps from all sources - and code/test/share your own apps without paying annual fee for having your phone dev-unlocked, and they don't cut features "just because there's a new device - so go buy it".
I love Windows Phone - as a regular phone. I kept waiting and waiting for changes - but the OS is still as locked down as it was in the beginning, no "not from market" apps, no drag-and-drop media, most of apps still dont support multitasking, cant even access your files, and apps from the market, believe me, are not that useful - that's why i moved away to Android.
I'd give it another thought mate - and about Note being laggy - try ICS AOSP rom, they run really smoothly.

I've never had any problems with Samsung's phones. The leaks provide enough of a base for us to get ICS working and Damn near perfect. I'm running an AOKP build with nearly Zero bugs and get almost 5-6 hours of SCREEN ON time per day with nearly 3 days of battery life with my usual texting and web surfing. Android is about being open, and as far as I'm concerned it is. Running ICS, I have had Zero lag, only one minor glitch (which is fixed in updated builds), better battery life than most of my friend's phones, a huge screen, and a OS that isn't crazy limited. If you change, it's obviously up to you, but I would go and test the many ICS roms out there like AOKP or ICStunner as they are simply amazing.
If you would rather have the WP7 then go for it. There's no point in us trying to convince you otherwise if you really have your mind set to it.

i was fan of android but the updates man o man do it 1 time in a month or so but every 2 a 3 day....update update....

I got my device in december, and I've received 3 updates (maybe 4) since then. That's a lot of updates. I have no complaints. What you're whining about is not getting the absolute latest OS build right away. I'd much rather have Samsung pushing updates that make it a stable device than Samsung sending us crappy builds. That would defer me, and I'm sure many others who don't like to flash custom ROMs and such, to other devices. I believe Samsung is doing the correct thing and waiting until the ROM is properly developed.
Enjoy WM7. A lot of people seem to enjoy it! I was actually thinking about it, too, a while ago, but it kind of follows Apple's model of multitasking and that doesn't do it for me. Blackberry and Android are the OSs that offer true multitasking (webOS, too, but that seems to be dead in the eyes of HP/Palm lol).

The Note isn't laggy, Gingerbread is. ICS is silky smooth. Samsung needs to hurry up and get ICS on the Note because it shackles such a wonderful device. It's like Apple running the new iPad with iOS 3.0. Your phone is only as good as your software is, and Gingerbread is an antiquated POS.

I lose my patience on Android Market here in Finland, because it sucks compared to the USA Market and App Store.

Sell your Note and get a Windows Phone is my advice. That way you'll be moaning in somebody else's forum instead of ours.
I've had WinMo, iPhone, Symbian and more recently Android and Google's contribution is by far the best.

You can use market enabler and choose tmobile profile and then you can install every us app that you want. Restart and you will be using default provider flags again. So, there is no problem.
I am using lc1 stock rom, the best out there in my opinion, everything works and pretty fast too.
WP7 is no where near WM6.5 in terms of functionality and way behind Android, IOS too. Android is the best choose in terms of functionality and practicality from all the smartphone OSes out there.

Honestly shaolin it's people like you that makes devs abandon XDA for whining about everything and everyone! Go.. get a windows phone and when you do and see how limited windows phone is DON'T COME BACK! Stay away from XDA and honestly i hope i can speak in the name of the whole community:
Don't ever come to this forum whining!
I won a Galaxy Note and honestly, i bought my SGS2 without ever had tried Android and i love the possibilities it brings me! The openess on developing!
I simply love it! Had my first chance on SGS2 and i will continue to use this awesome SO!
Please ask an admin to ban your account and go somewhere else!

Bye bye. Enjoy whatever phone you'll be getting. Just remember, it's just a phone at the end of the day.

Im not the only one

I don't get folks like you. You actually purchase a phone for what it will be, as opposed to what it is.
Do you only live in the future? Don't forget the present mate.
If you're so unhappy with the lack of updates or the speed of updates, go get iOS and WP7. No one is grabbing you by the ball-sack to stay with Androids.
P.S. Requested to mods that this thread be moved to Android General as it has nothing to do with the Galaxy Note.

Actually I dont even want an update from Samsung any more, yesterday I recirved an update for the Samsung Apps after updating it stoped downloading applications alltogether!!,
"You cant download with this email from this country" bla ..bla..there was no way Icould fix that even after signing up for multiple new accounts.
If things will look like this I rather be left along with the GB.

Moved to teh OT forum as they will advice you better on what to do about your quandary
May the trolls have mercy on your soul mate.

You have a 1.4GHz dual core phone and Mali 400MP GPU and say it lags. My friend has a Wildfire that has a clock speed of 524MHz and no GPU and even he isn't complaining as much as you. Why don't you donate him your phone and make the good switch to Symbian S60?

what is even the point of this thread? It appears you looking to justify your feelings because you read an article and lack confidence to buy a new phone without a thread of people you don't know making a decision for you.
android is great

Buy now or wait???

My upgrade is coming up in January but i want the Vibrant so badly that i think imma treat myself and pay full price for it, coz my current phone (omnia 2) is a so ****ty.
But reading all these lag/gps threads has put some second thoughts in my head and thinking of holding off and just upgrading in January and save a bit of cash as well or maybe even the torch.
What are your thoughts wait it out and see if samsung fixes the issues and not be out $500 or its worth buying now because the lag fixes fix everything and gps is not so bad?
if you need a new phone now, buy it
the problems you read are exaggerated as usual.
been using it for over a month using stock ROMs every feature works and no lags
GPS is a must thing for me, and it works as soon as i turn it on within 5~10sec
if you don't need a phone now
then wait for better phones coming out next year
well i don't want another phone and i think the vibrant is very nice better then my freezing and laggy omnia.
Get the vibrant now and save your upgrade for the next best thing next year. At $520 tax in its a steal now that you can unlock it for free.
My advise is wait for the September update, to see what happens. I don't care about the lag personally, but the GPS could be better (even though I don't use it really).
We'll know for sure then if the GPS will work. Because it is likely other devices with competing specs to this phone will be released, and if they support GPS better (and have ATMEL too), you'd be better off waiting.

Any of the new HTC phones, including the Desire HD. They admittedly have the now infamous 1Ghz snapdragon but theres a good possibility they are paired with an Adreno 205 (which has a graphics chipset based on Power VR SGX 535). That would give the HTC phones equal performance considering froyo + will be better optimised for snapdragon processors.
Graphics performance is not as good as the galaxy s chipset but good enough.
HTC's in general I've found are better built but now were encroaching on personal preference territory. This may be simply because HTC have had more time to perfect android or just Ive had a more solid experience with HTC android phones.
rest assured there will be a whole flood of non-samsung androids come christmas so perhaps hold off till end of September and pick the best price/feature phone at that time. More exciting is the prospect of google tv, greater adoption and connection of android devices.
p.s. theres also windows mobile and its host of offerings.
In regards to Windows Mobile, unfortunately, Microsoft seems to have joined the party much too late (which is a pity actually). I don't believe WM7 will survive, because Blackberry owns the corporate market, Apple owns the home market, Symbian/custom OS's owns the cheaper smartphone market and Android owns the technical market (although, it is now accelerating it's growth).
Btw, the SGS isn't the only phone having issues. On the iPhone, people are still having issues with the proximity sensor, and the only solution for iPhone users for the antenna is to use a bumper if they suffer for the issue (or become right handed).
Yep, and the Nexus One wasn't perfect either:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/186399/google_faces_deluge_of_nexus_one_complaints.html . Remember that? And now, people LOVE the nexus one.
The main issue seems to be GPS though on this phone, as people who oppose the lag found switching to EXT fixes their issue.. But GPS, there was no known solution. So whilst there may be similar phones released in september, I forgot to mention you should either wait to see what GPS does, or wait a while before grabbing another phone (because they might have other serious issues on release).
But be cautious about claims made in forums, and wait until you see proof (even here). One idiot who owned a Sony Ericson blog claimed with authority that this phone definitely had 360MB RAM (rather than the full 512), I see people constantly grab quadrant and take note of every 0.5%-1% increase in score they see and try to correlate them to speed of the ROM (because 1% increase in quadrant would be visibly noticeable?) and I've seen people claim that because NMEA sends dodgy packets, the problem is DEFINITELY hardware, without checking if the drivers, or the device is sending them.
Make sure you wait for sufficient evidence. If the GPS DOES get fixed though, and tracking software consistently shows accurate tracks (when sitting down and moving), I'd personally recommend selecting this phone, because unlike the current competing devices, it has good hardware (even a proper multitouch controller), and we mostly know it's problems and limitations now.

Even the HTC Desired have (had) the problem with the proximity sensor, good thing our great team at XDA made a hack to fix that.
unfortunately or fortunately depending how you look at it, iphone people are not as free to do as they please with their phones.

This phone Rocks. buy one, hell buy two lol.
I ordered one yesterday, coming from an Omnia HD with Symbian on it I reckon this will be a pretty huge upgrade. Even given the minor bugs there is. I'll put my trust in that Samsung will fix those bugs in Froyo which is coming in less than a month anyway.

I'd definitely recommend waiting, but not because of the lag/gps ; Gingerbread should allow for some awesome phones come this holiday season(mainly phones with a higher res).

Also figured I'd mention that coming from AMOLED; I don't think I'd able to downgrade that. The washed out blacks are so dreadful. Super AMOLED promising even better contrasts (and actually working in sunlight) can only be a winner. I did consider waiting for Desire HD, but choose not to, purely because of the screen.
What do you guys think are the chances of i9000 getting gingerbread ???
Samsung said official 2.2 will be around september, and 3.0 will be launched around mid-october , so maybe we will have 3.0 for i9000 around february
Desire HD will launch around mid-september , it will come with 2.2, and will probably get 3.0 in december - january
Nobody knows.. Nobody even knows what the specs for gingerbread are. Any reply would be guesses izmenar. The only reason we probably wouldn't get it, is if it required dual core, but dual core mobile CPU's aren't being released for a while

Tegra 2 should have a dual core Cortex-A9.
Only thing we know for sure is that custom UIs won't be supported in Gingerbread.

Hi there,
i have my Galaxy S for about 2 Weeks and i am happy with it.
The Display is very clear (even with an lower resolution than the IP4).
No jailbreaking or something else to get some stuff working on this nice phone.
Nice functions and a good UI.
Great phone!
...only GPS sucks a little bit, but i hope this will be fixed

Still no updates

Hi
The SGT is the first and last Samsung (and perhaps Android) device I will ever buy due to the complete lack of official updates available for it. I am not interesting in flashing hacked roms, I just expect Samsung to provide a timely release of new android versions very soon after google makes them available.
In respect of updates, compared to iOS devices, Android devices are so far behind its untrue --> While 2 year old Apple devices such as the iPhone 3GS are updatable to the latest version of iOS, 3 month old Android devices do not get access to the latest version of android. Its frankly disgusting.
Anyone know when I can expect an update for my SGT to Android 2.3/3.0 (sim free wifi+3g version)?
I've had a pre-order on the go with Amazon for a 7" iconia tab A101, but that has been delayed until 30th June now!! Looks like I am stuck with the SGT and its outdated/buggy/slow OS for some time. I should have just bought an iPad...

So only around 4% of handsets have gingerbread. Hmm......I would probably consider the Tab to be up to date then? Since that 4% will be mostly consisting of Brand New handsets. Like the galaxy S2,etc. I do actually have an S2, my second samsung device of all time. Is gingerbread much different to froyo? nope. can barely tell tbh. Not like the leap from 2.1 to 2.2. Though if you asked if the dual core made a difference, I would have to say yes.

Exactly.
trying to compare a iphone/ios to a Android OS and licensed devices is completley retarded and shows how ignorant the OP is.
iOS is designed to run on 4 devices from a specific manufacturer, whereas Android is licensed to be developed for MANY different manufacturers and MANY MANY MANY devices.
If the OP cant handle a real OS ad real device he should get a lobotomy and get a iphone.

Android Updates
Lol
I knew this would result in a load of negativity from the Androiders out there. The simple fact is that your average end-user simply does not care that its harder for a manufacturer using a licensed OS to provide updates than it is for Apple to update iOS for its own devices. Its frankly not the end-users problem.
Anyone who has been using iOS devices for any time, will be very surprised if they switch to android (due to all the hype surrounding it), when they find out that updates beyond what the phone is delivered with rarely happen. I would predict that those jumping ship from iOS and heading to Android will be right back to iOS once their contracts expire with a very sour taste lingering!
The fact that Apple devices are upgradable to the latest OS version for around 2 years after first manufacture makes them a compelling purchase (despite the higher initial cost) You are not going to be lumbered with a useless, outdated brick half way through your 2-year contract.
Apple has set the bar very high, its up to google, samsung, HTC to match Apple's performance in this regard *however hard it might be*.
As someone who owns both Android and iOS devices, I am able to compare and contrast. Both have their good points, but the lack of updates for Android devices is a massive negative for them. The other negative being the quality of the apps on Android which is way,way behind those on iOS. Unless you *own* and *use* both iOS and Android devices on a daily basis, you are simply not qualified to have an opinion on this!
I'm no 'Ignorant OP' as someone commented. I've probably been on XDA way before many other folks, and have had 6 WinMo devices prior to heading in the direction of apple. I'm a programmer by trade working with mobile devices (hardware close assy/C/C++, none of this C#/Java nonsense). I simply don't have the time to 'tinker' and flash 'custom' roms anymore. In short, if the geeks on XDA can produce a semi-working 2.3rom for the SGT with none of the information that Samsung themselves have - SO CAN SAMSUNG (if they can be arsed that is).
I like the form factor of the SGT (iPad is frankly too big), I like the fact that its got a microSD slot (makes it hugely useful while away together with my digicam). I got an Android device due to the flexibility the OS offers, I just don't like that I appear to be stuck with all its bugs without any chance of any official updates from Samsung. I wish google would have taken the device manufacturer out of the loop (as Microsoft has done with windows), and push updates directly to the device.
As for this comment:
'iOS is designed to run on 4 devices from a specific manufacturer, whereas Android is licensed to be developed for MANY different manufacturers and MANY MANY MANY devices.'
Sounds like windows on the desktop eh? I've had countless updates from MS for my Windows PC's and laptops despite the fact that this is a single OS present on MANY MANY MANY devices.
It will be interesting to see how MS deals with the issue of updates for WP7 devices. Thus far, they have mucked it right up...

No, it doesn't sound like windows. I've never seen any other distributions of Windows...guessing cause its not open source. And Windows operating systems only worked on x86 and amd machines. Only reason Windows runs on my macbook is because its got an intel processor in it.
Google made a distribution of the linux operating system, made it open source, and designed a complex phone API behind it. Microsoft doesn't do that nor does Apple. Like Microsoft, Apple restricts what an end user, carrier, or developer can do with its operating system. Android OS is open source.
I work with multiple devices almost on a daily basis. My colleague has the exact tablet you have and he loves it. His only real complaint other than the few "if it had this..." is he wishes it was maybe a tad bit smaller. He's just your average user: checks emails, facebook, twitter, corporate emails, google voice, web browsing... and he has not one regret from switching from the iOS environment. Downloads tons of apps, homescreen's covered with widgets, etc etc.
AT&T was the reason why I got rid of my iphone, not Apple. Verizon gave me a Droid and I fell in love with it. I ran the stock rom on that phone for ages. I didn't even bother doing a custom rom until i got a second android phone through my personal business. Verizon kept us up to date as possible as to when it'd push the update to our phones and so did Motorola. The only update I couldn't wait to get was 2.2 so I could tether to my phone much easier. Even now that iphone is on the Verizon network, I wouldn't switch back to the iphone.
I returned my ipad because I just still couldn't justify the price for all its prettiness. I spent $280 bucks on my android tablet with the ability of reading sd cards, usb drives, and giving me the freedom to browse the device's file system, vs the $500 I spent on the ipad that didn't have a file manager and the only way to get access to the usb and sd cards was to by an extra device and hoped it worked. Also not having to have itunes installed on my computer and go through loops to connect my devices to different computers is a plus. I can buy a microsoft user license for about $300 bucks and install it on one machine. I can buy (if I don't feel like downloading for free) a linux distribution for $5-10 bucks(shipping on dvd) and install it on as many machines as I want and I can even tailor and recompile the operating system specifically for my machine. (What Samsung does for your tablet and Viewsonic does for mine.)
I don't deny that you're having a problem with your device and it should be resolved in some kind of timely matter. Samsung owes that to you as a consumer of their products...Blaming Google and the entire Android operating system stack is kind of naive when its obvious that the operating system is working as intended. Samsung's distribution apparently doesn't for you and whoever else has issues I guess.
Well, if I'm not allowed to compare to Windows, am I allowed to compare to Linux?! This is open source, runs on many many different hardware platforms (hell, most (all?) android phones are ARM based just as Linux (mostly) runs on x86/x64 hardware).
All the packages on my linux installations are updatable directly from the distro source on the fly whenever I choose to update them - this includes *core* OS packages as well as stuff that I have installed.
Quite frankly, a huge to-do is made about the fact that something is a fixed or mobile platform, trying to paint a false picture that mobile platforms are somehow so much more difficult to manage/maintain than fixed platforms THEY ARE NOT. Its just yet another excuse from the manufacturers for not spending the time/money updating a device.
The PRINCIPLE reason why Android & WinMo devices are not readily updatable to the latest and greatest version of the OS is NOT technical, but rather that the manufacturer and the operator would rather flog you a new phone than keep your existing one up-to-date. Its a testament to Apple that they manage to flog new phones to existing apple users despite the fact that there's very little in the OS that they could not get on their existing phone (which would run the same OS version anyway). Apple manages to sell new hardware because the new hardware is brilliant.
Anyway, my original post here was to ascertain whether or not 2.3 or 3.0 would be available for the SGT at some stage. I'm thinking that nobody knows which is fine. I only paid £300 for a wifi+3G SGT and they're fetching that on ebay, so I have not exactly lost out. I'll check out 3.0 on the Iconia A101 I have on pre-order. Maybe that will live up to my expectations.
Nigel
I have never understood the *****ing about updates thing.
You buy a device. When you pick it up off the shelf and take it home you are completely happy with what it is and what you can do with it. You tell all your friends how awesome your device is and recommend that everyone buy one. Then you read that there is a new update to Android. All of a sudden your device is a POS. You wonder why any sane person would even buy such a sack of sh*t. You question your own sanity for buying it in the first place. You call all your friends back and tell them you were dead wrong and no one should ever buy a device like yours ever again. Nothing about your device has changed. WTF??
Also, I'll point out that while older versions of IOS can run newer versions of IOS, they don't do it well at all. That's the main reason why devices don't get updated. Just saying.
Some of the responses here are mind boggling.
Consider this: These Android 3rd party partners essentially get these Android updates for free from Google. Contrast that with Apple who have to do most of the work (except for the open source parts they leverage, which isn't the *entire OS* in Android's case). These manufacturers then need to do, well, what volunteer hackers seem to have little trouble putting together from their bedrooms in relatively little man-hour time. So it's frankly in-excusable for the likes of Samsung, Sony, etc to not have provided Gingerbread updates by now for their devices. The fact that only 4% of handsets on Gingerbread proves the point!
My device is working just fine. Some better apps would make it alot more useful, but I doubt any sw updates will make this much better. Just like switching from windows XP to 7, what have I really gained?
Google encouraging 18 month update pledge
Well, its a start, what happens in practice remains to be seen:

Three questions:
1. What entitles you to any updates at all? They provide the product. You take it out of the box and determine that you like it. Why do they have any obligation to update your device at all? You certainly don't see this happening with any other type of product.
2. What happened to break your device? When you got it you liked it or you would've taken it back. Now it's a POS. Why? What happened to it to break it?
3. What features of Gingerbread do you want/need on your Tab?

1. Really? Microsoft lets you update for free from XP to Windows 7? or even from Windows 7 Home to Windows 7 Professional? Please let me know how to do that. They're never giving me any updates other than security fixes. I've received no updates from Microsoft that included a brand new OS. Obviously I'm in the minority I guess.
2. What is it about your device that makes it a POS now when you liked it originally? What has changed or what have you noticed?

Reason why iPhone 4s kills Android

Lets write down why iPhone sold 4-5million in 3days and why android will never beat iPhone:
Why Android cant kill iPhone ever.
1. Delayed updates, while iOS release update everybody can update, no racial descrimination in updates lol
2. You need to beg and wait for developer to make a rom, sometime you need to buy them that smartphone to support the device. Most roms has forceclose error and some notification breaks!
3. Android markets, FRAGMENTED APPS, you need to beg or bash developer to update their up, but they just give up on you!
4. 4g sucks battery life (which android device is know for poor battery life and takes forever to charge) and spoty 4g, while iPhone 3g can do the job without problems and fact that is more stable!
5. Yeah yeah yeah 3D that feels like some alien is in your head playing with an amoeba! And iPhone 4s 1080p almost near Canon 5d MK II which cost $3000+.
6. Better resale value and you are guranteed 1yr of having the latest model iPhone before they release another iPhone. On android you bought it for almost $600, after 2 months you can buy it for $350 tops. And if you are lucky there is anew model android device after 1.5months and the one you bought is already an old model smartphone.
7. Seek apps and you will find.
8. Classy looks not plastic that you can see on trash cans.
9. you can video call every body, iPhone, iPad, iPad Touch, Mac. Android no videocall unity.
10. You have a bunch of dev that support jailbreaks and they every apps they made works on every iOs device.
11. Unmatch warranty, you want a new iPhone? All you need to do is mess up the OS and then gp to Apple store and you walk out with a spanking, twinkling new iPhone in your hand no question ask.
12. Retina display, you need magnifying glass to see the pixel dot.
13. They copy some android apps but they made it work right you can say it is perfect. On android it is just good enough.
14-350+. plus tons more.
Come join the fun list them.
And Android wins, Steve Jobs is dead, get over it. (Sarcasm intended)
But in all seriousness my Thrill beats the iPhone 4S to death, so does the GSII, and about any other new top of the line Android. iPhones are too hard to work with, everything is locked up unlike the Android. Let me try to dismiss as many of your reasons as I can.
1. Android OTA updates have problems because lots of people have Androids=Slower server updates and connection problems.
2. At least we can flash roms.
3. At least we have an open marketplace.
4. I have CM7 on my Inspire and have gone 26 hours and still have 30% of my battery life left.
5. My Thrill has 3D and 1080P, and can play Blu Ray videos/movies in 3D. Also, it has a built in HDMI slot.
6. We have so many updates which can cost more money, but we also get newer technology and support faster.
7. That didn't even make logical sense.
8. Android phones are sleek and sexy, iPhones had dropped calls because of the so called "Death Grip". Plus, glass breaks easily. Google SGII vs iPhone 4S drop test. Laugh.
9. I have a face calling utility, called Skype, along with about three other easy to download apps.
10. We have way more dev support, WAY MORE.
11. How do you mess up an iPhone OS? Jailbreaking voids your warranty. And, you have to pay the same insurance price, go AT&T? Physical damage covered.
12. We have Super Amoled + (Close enough)
13. Most Android apps work. Any examples to prove this point?
14. What?
There, happy?

The ONLY reason the iPhone will win over Android is simple: EASE OF USE
Almost every reason you gave in the OP is mostly stuff the average consumer doesn't and will never care about. The AC doesn't care about rooting and such. Heck, if the average consumer REALLY cared about battery life, then the Galaxy series of phones wouldn't sell as well as it does.
The ONLY reason iOS and it's the ONLY thing iOS has over everyone is ease of use. Winmo7 has equal ease of use, but it suffers from coming to the party too late.
ICS looks like it will have better ease of use, but for now iOS is king when it comes to the average consumer and JUST working.

1. Delayed updates, while iOS release update everybody can update, no racial descrimination in updates lol - Agreed. Android OEMs need to get their act together. Either that or Google needs to end Android UI skins and standardize ICS.
2. You need to beg and wait for developer to make a rom, sometime you need to buy them that smartphone to support the device. Most roms has forceclose error and some notification breaks! - Lolno.
3. Android markets, FRAGMENTED APPS, you need to beg or bash developer to update their up, but they just give up on you! True for games. And some apps have ugly UIs that don't conform with the rest of the Android system...but other than that...no.
4. 4g sucks battery life (which android device is know for poor battery life and takes forever to charge) and spoty 4g, while iPhone 3g can do the job without problems and fact that is more stable! - LTE does, but HSPA+ doesn't.
5. Yeah yeah yeah 3D that feels like some alien is in your head playing with an amoeba! And iPhone 4s 1080p almost near Canon 5d MK II which cost $3000+. - The 4S camera is amazing, yes.
- Somewhat true. Not necessarily.
7. Seek apps and you will find. - Huh?
8. Classy looks not plastic that you can see on trash cans. - This is kind of true. App Store apps do tend to have better UIs and quality in general than their Market counterparts, but it depends on the dev.
9. you can video call every body, iPhone, iPad, iPad Touch, Mac. Android no videocall unity. - Google Talk Video...comes with every Android phone. Call any Android device or PC.
10. You have a bunch of dev that support jailbreaks and they every apps they made works on every iOs device. - the Android mod community is better, period. Jailbreaking hit its high point around iOS 2.2.x. After that...the actual Cydia developers have turned into 8 year olds making fart themes.
11. Unmatch warranty, you want a new iPhone? All you need to do is mess up the OS and then gp to Apple store and you walk out with a spanking, twinkling new iPhone in your hand no question ask. - Yes Apple customer service is nice.
12. Retina display, you need magnifying glass to see the pixel dot. - Same with the Galaxy Nexus.

You forgot:
-Closed ecosystem, you will only have whatever they allow you to have.
-A phone that's made of glass, if it fall off your hands it will explode its "Nasa technology made" screen to a million pieces.
-The ackward feeling of being just one more from the herd with not much of a freedom, unlike Android.
"I'll rather be head of mice than a lion's tail"
And still, there is not a single thing that you can do on an iphone that u cannot do it on android also, and if there is, its not for long.
One more thing: iphone fits more for just the regular USER, let's say. Android fits more for the power users like us AND regular users.

Hate to say it, but as much as you want to think Android has a better Dev community it doesn't. Most of the Android devs stick to a specific device each completely different from the next. The iPhone Dev community can be smaller but a lot more support because no fragmentation.
The main reason for Android ROMs are for a few reasons. Removing manufactor/carrier crapware, ASOP, and themes. With the iPhone you don't need a ROM at all because there is no crapware, it's stock firmware, and with jailbreaking you can theme.
You don't brick iPhones unless it's intentional and even then you can get a new one for free most likely.
To the op, you can't talk about the pros of an iPhone and attempt to distinguish it against a platform (Android). The 4S is a phone. iOS5 is the platform. If you want to make a fair assessment, you need to compare it with a NEXUS since it's the flagship phone for Android.
I'll give apple their props. They make good products and streamline as much as possible (the ecosystem). If you're the kind of person that just wants a good phone without a NEED of fully customizing/tweaking, then the iPhone is perfect.
On the other hand, I chose an EVO 15 months ago because it suited my needs. Barring any hardware requirement (NFC chip), I know that it'll only be a matter of time until the wonderful devs here at xda will find a way to get it to work on my phone. For example, sense 3.0 isn't officially coming to my phone, but guess what? It's possible to do so, even Sense 3.5. You have the right to point out that certain things don't work, but guess what? Eventually they will and I can wait until the devs complete the project. Let me put it like this:
When people state that the custom ROMs are buggy. It's like a little kid making GINGERBREAD and eating the dough, then complaining that it's not their flavor. You'd simply point out that you gotta finish adding all the ingredients and wait for the finished product. I'm running CM7 GB 2.3.7 and this cookie is sweet.
Lastly, let's say you drive a Ferrari. THE iOS platform is like driving an automatic (no paddle shifter, just a regular gas and break). The Android platform is like a 6 gate manual. You have complete control over the vehicle. You feel more connected because you have a say. You can down shift and speed past the car on your right. Whereas the automatic will force you to remain in high gear because that's what it wants you to think is best for you.
At the end of the day, it's all about whether you're happy with your purchase. Bashing something for the sake of bashing is immature.
P.S. look to your left...that's me passing you up

Nokia N9

After your time with sensation and sense, did anyone try the N9? How does meego feel?
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA Premium App
I was one of those people waiting for Meego 2 years ago. Eventually I got tired of waiting and moved on to Android. Meego is a great concept with so much potentials, but its 2 years late into the game. Nokia already picked Windows Phone as the primary OS for their devices, who knows how much support will Meego get from Nokia. Meego will suffer the same faith as Maemo on the N900. Great community support, but no developer supports. If you really like the hardware design of the N9, the Nokia Lumia 800 is the closest thing you get, but with windows running on it. Meego is just too little too late...
I had an N900 that I thought I loved, thanks to it's power. However, one of the big issues with it for me was the laggy UI and non-GPU accelerated aspect of it. Android isn't GPU accelerated until 4.0, but it usually feels butter smooth anyway (on the right phones). The N900's UI was like 10 to 15 FPS max. Laggy and slow as hell. That really, really bothered me.
Then, Nokia said "Eff you guys, no more support from us". And that was the last Nokia I ever bought; the end.
I still have my N900 after getting the Sensation. I thought I would still use it as a sidewinder for wifi hacking, navigation reading etc, but in the end it sits in a drawer.
I power it on once in a while to see how it feels or play with Meego CE, but I last 5 minutes and go back to the Sensation.
It's like an old school car, you spend time and time again to make them run like you want and in the end a hot hatch is faster, more refined and has more features.
I had mine overclocked with kernels and faster with scripts and whatever else I could think or get from the maemo forums.
Tried the N9 in a store, it's nice and the UI I am sure will serve as a paradigm for later devices just like WebOS.
Having been trapped in a DEAD ecosystem with Nokia in the past I wouldn't buy it though.
We waited for 2 years for flash 10.1 which was promised on launch and we got NOTHING. Now N9ers are waiting for Alien Dalvik which might ore might not come and may not work with everything and may be OEM only.

Lol, I remember firing up that flasher to get PR1.2, etc etc. Waiting forever for flash 10.1, that apparent beta release that was just flash 9 but all it did was tell browsers it was flash 10. Flashing the kernel that allowed for the 1Ghz+ overclock. Never lasted long enough to see the community update though, heard it was "great" from the N900 diehards, which probably means it was decent at best.

Yeah, me too. CE edition is slow as hell and really has nothing whatsoever to do with the N9. Nitdroid was far more usable (I used to dual boot so I would get to know Android. btw N900 had GB way before some other high end phones of it's time).
In a strange mix of fortunes the N9 got Harmattan which was going to be Nokia's next step to Maemo and N900 got MeeGo (which was the bastard child of Moblin and Maemo).
Only thing they have in common is compatible apps.
This is getting odd I also had N900 prior Sensation. Is this a coincidence ?
As others said we were betrayed by Nokia. I'll admit I was a Nokia fanboy for a long time (too long maybe) but when I leared we're not getting anything that we were promised and our Ovi Store will be in BETA forever I decided to move to Android
ahh but N900 was a fun device, a true mobile computer in phone formfactor and fantastic community support ( MohammadAG and others are doing fantastic work)
Yeah i know what it means to be a ex-nokia lover, for me the N8x series got.my heart (N80,N82,N86) mainly because of camera.. did u ever use the N900 for wifi cracking?

My favorites were the Nokia 6300b (not a smartphone), the N79, the N900, and although I never owned one, I really wanted an N96. I had two or three other Nokias, but they're not worth mentioning.
You guys complain about software support, but in ALL honesty, what the heck do you even want that the stock phones didn't have / they don't actually have in Ovi store?
I've started my nokias w/ E71 and am still running strong on E6. Almost all the basic features of your average android, but beastly battery and physical qwerty. I personally use my SGS2 as that fancy supercar, that you take outta your garage to play with once a week, and store it back because its rather impractical in everyday life.
Meego is not a bad system but Nokia N9 is last device with Meego so the support will die soon...That's why i don't recommend
Nokia N9 with MeeGo is too bad

Yep, all true. I had all the phones in my sig, and actually N9 is the most amazing for a day to day use. I am completely happy with it.
Just picked up a 64 Black myself. Any chance of a small subforum for Meego devices?

What's the point? I doubt you will find too many N9 users here.
Just go to talk.maemo.org or official meego forums.

Very nice! But you are missing the hardware. The best looking device I have ever owned.

[Q] Different questions before possible return

Hi, guys. Hope you're OK
I am not trying to troll or be an asshole, but instead try to point to some of the "flaws" or elements with the phone I'm a little disappointed with. I have been a big fan of the Samsung Galaxy phones and I've had them all (actually I still have the S4) and now that I have the Z1 I can point on the flaws easier, because in my opinion the software on the S4 (Touchwiz) are much better. I can mention the built-in widgets, the home screen "editor" (I can't even restock the windows with Z1), the alarm clock has less features, calendar is not as intuitive, SMS settings are very bad and really illogical and buggy and so on.
However, I love the Z1 design, gallery, the screen, happy with the sound and camera, but I just don't know what to do. Do you think these problems and settings will be fixed in future updates? I think it's rather scary that I get a Samsung S1 and S2 feelings from some of the settings I have on the Z1. This isn't good. Didn't Sony even try Samsung phones?
An example is the SMS settings mentioned above. When I receive a message I don't want the message to visible on the status bar, but I really want to get notified in the status bar that a message has been received, but don't want to read the actual message. I can't see any settings for this at all. Touchwiz had these exact same settings in S1 and early S2. When, at the Z1, I'm trying to disable the status bar notifications, it automatically also grays out (disabling) the ability to have shake notification and even sound notification. What the hell is this?!
I got the Z1 today and noticed 3-4 or more of these "bugs". Anyone else noticed the same?
So to my questions:
Should I deliver the device back and take a chance that Sony will fix this? Or should I expect Sony to already have implemented this if they were smart enough from the beginning?
I see people are mentioning firmware updates already. I don't have these (UK version, living in Norway)
Will this device be rooted flawlessly in the future without camera brick?
How is Sony's history regarding updates on their devices?
Thanks Hopefully someone can answer or typing their thoughts on this dilema and what I (or someone else) should do.
Have a nice evening.
More stuff I miss
I will update this post in the future if feel it's necessary to write more "missing" features in the Z1.
Live wallpapers?
Hide applications?
Move the app button in the middle of the bottom menu and even insert more apps here than 4 only
Shortcut to new messages etc via the lock screen
LED notification blink rate (WAY TO long wait)
•Should I deliver the device back and take a chance that Sony will fix this? Or should I expect Sony to already have implemented this if they were smart enough from the beginning?
Generally speaking Sony always are a bit behind(1-3months) on several features that you expect, it's normal for Sony and that won't change.
•I see people are mentioning firmware updates already. I don't have these (UK version, living in Norway)
Once again when it comes to firmware updates they usually release them piece by piece in different regions which can take weeks for some regions while for some it usually takes hours after they announce them
•Will this device be rooted flawlessly in the future without camera brick?
Seeing as Sony has established a good connection with developers I have confidence in Sony that as soo nas they sort everything out then they will be ready to open up everything without bricking the camera or other things
•How is Sony's history regarding updates on their devices?
Back in the X10 days it was pretty bad but if you ask me right now I would say that they are one of the better ones. They were first to commit to updating to Kitkat so thats a positive sign for the future seeing as the phone is a week old.. Lately Sony phones has 18months update spans which is pretty decent
Extra: Live wallpapers is available just longpress on a empty space in the homescreen and choose Wallpaper > Live wallpaper
Hide applications: You can put tapplications in a folder and then put away from the others.
More apps in the menu is possible only with a folder.
LED: can be controlled by any app from the Play store(Ex. Light flow )
Messages in lockscreen: No idea
I think you need to keep in mind that Sony delivers a very stock and basic feature set. While Samsung is LOADED with features and whatnot, Sony keeps it very clean.
Look at sony like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and at Samsung like this:
because that's what basically going on. Based on that fact, I don't think Sony will change their vision in that respect. Sony will keep their phones from being loaded with often useless features while Samsung keeps 'innovating' (IMO) and adding features. So if you expect Sony to add tons and tons of software features, you may be better off selling your Z1 and getting a note 3, or of course keep your S4 since it's still a great device it seems.
On the bug-related side, I think it's pretty safe to say that Sony will solve these issues. Since the release of the Z1 we've already had 4 updates, these, at least as far as most of us can see, didn't add/fix a whole lot, but they are updates and that's important. It means Sony most likely has a good team of developers working on the Z1 and trying to improve it. (note: it looks like it, nothing is guaranteed) Please also keep in mind this is a very new device and we still have a long time to go, you should give them some time I think.
Now to (try to) answer your questions:
This is your own decision, I think you should wait a bit to see if Sony indeed fixes some of the bugs you mentioned.
This is depended on the region you are in. You can always get the latest software here on XDA and flash it using flashtool.
Yes.
I didn't own any Sony devices before to be honest. From what I've read though Sony wasn't good at all in the beginning. Bringing out a device with Android 1.5 I believe it was while 'we' were already on 2.1 or 2.2. When Sony came to the market with their new developer friendly mindset though it became all a lot better. AOSP is now officially supported by Sony for a couple of devices. They offered a totally different OS for one phone. (Firefox OS, for a low-end phone though) They really seem to be getting their stuff together and I expect to see Sony continue these actions.
I think I look at phones differently than you. I don't like leaving a computer with only the software it came with on it. That's what these phones are now a days, mobile computers. The last thing on my mind when I choose a phone is the applications it runs. I always buy android phones do to their customizable nature. I don't like a phone to tell me what apps I should be using. Anything you don't have or anything you could want can generally be found in an app store or custom rom. Have you ever installed an app on your computer? I doubt very few people leave their desktop computers stock without installing itunes or something.
To me even apps provided by sony is too much i reduce the apps.. my previous one since i updated to Z1 can only used as phone i.e calls and messaging.. i may need certain tasks not found stock... some specialised app... which i install additionally... my friend tells the phone is not lively...i keep white wallpaper... one homescreen etc... not an issue. I love the Z1 design, gallery, the screen, camera and performance.. only negative i felt is crappy sound...thats it... so it is personal if a person like a phone... i think you can disable notification in messaging and install handcent to achieve your goal.. if you root you can remove native messaging app too..
Open Source Developer support has always been good to me... on my Xperia S alone, I have a choice of 10-15 different ROMs! 5-10 of which are still being actively developed! I get almost weekly updates from these amazing developers... don't even get me started on Xperia Z...
I love having this support because I prefer to keep my phone as bloatfree as possible... as close to stock android as possible but still have the Sony UI latest features (like right now I have Xperia S but with Z1 looking UI and Z1 features)...
If I want live wallpapers, I'll go to playstore download a few... If I want a different UI, I can go and download APEX or NOVA Launchers...
I had a few samsungs and LGs before but I love the Sony UI a lot more because of its simplicity... and they way they hide functions (like small apps, access by long pressing home button) to keep the UI clean... for me this is a case of less is more...
LGs and Samsungs just has too much functions that I rarely use, loaded in your UI (like they would put everything in the pull down notifications, or put everything in settings etc.) its just very messy... True that Sony UI may take some time to adjust, but once you do, you will never want to go back to LG Samsung bloated UI...
Just my 2 cents
Thanks for all the answers people. To me honest I were expecting flame wars and getting attacked by irrational fan boys. Nice to see we can keep the discussion at a grown up and realistic manner. Don't see that often on forums nowadays.

Do you think we'll be able to install vanilla Android, Cyanogen mod and do exactly how we like? I've always been a fan of stock room, but it need to suit my needs and be perfect. I actually think the Samsungs S3 and S4 TouchWiz is amazing. Maybe a few unecessary features, but all in all I love it.

Thanks for this tip. Very happy
At the end of the day it's your personal preference and I agree with others here Sony provides a clutter free clean UI which is very much like a stock Nexus UI with little features added and the best thing about android is you can download apps and customize the hell out of it to get it to where you want.
P.S This thread strictly speaking belongs in the Q&A section
Moderator: feel free to move thread
I have desided to keep my Z1 and see what happens. Based on the replies from you guys and some heavy thinking I think Sony deserves a chance on fixing the minor bugs. The rest of the stuff I can live with and even download as apps. Now I should just sit tight and wait for updates and hope for the best.

Nah you don't really have to. The difference between the questions you asked and the question(s) other people ask is that you don't go in full 'attack-mode' so to speak. You have arguments for why you think a certain thing and it just opens up for a good discussion where people will give well argumented replies.
TL;DR you don't come across as a spoiled cretin.

I am almost 100% sure that you will see some Vanilla android and other custom roms like CM at least by christmas time or a little bit into 2014, check out the Xperia S forum and you will understand what I mean because it is full of improvements, custom roms and mods

Downloading extra wallpapers is pretty easy on the Play store, I personally don't really like them - they kinda distract me from the UX

Yup I agree!
I can't just come into a product related forum and say "suck this" "suck that" this product should be this and that and expect everyone to be nice... its a flame thread waiting to happen... this is not a customer service forum lol
The OP was very respectful and asked legitimate questions, so he got respectful and legitimate answers :good:
Just my 2 cents:
I used Galaxies since SGS II and loved them.
When I got my ZU one week ago and my Z1 two days ago I had a hard time to "learn" a new UI and missed some Galaxy features.
But as it is with everything new I got acquainted with Sony UI VERY fast and now I LOVE the easy and fast handling. Sony UI fits more to my needs than Sammy's ever did...
Sent from my C6833 using xda app-developers app
Regarding roms, we're already seeing the early stages of CyanogenMod (and that also means AOSP-support) for the Z1, mere weeks (week?) after its release. This speaks volumes I think, and I am not surprised, Sony (as opposed to Samsung in this case) have won the hearts of developers across the globe by being very open and supportive regarding 3rd-party development on their devices. Source code and binary blobs for the Z1 were released a week prior to the availability of the device.
In fact, there were actually people who ported TouchWiz to the predecessor Xperia Z, and I fully expect the same to happen with the Xperia Z1, in case you really can't let the Samsung UI go.
Bottom line, pick the hardware you like best, the community (or the manufacturer, but more often the community) will solve your software issues 9 times out of 10 in my experience. Obviously this only applies to devices where the first party developers are open with the source code, and Sony most certainly are. So select the hardware you like best from the subset of devices where proper source code is available.
Personally I love that Sonys UI is so close to AOSP, yet still gives off a more refined experience, without really losing anything.
Thanks troed and Rekoil for your 2 cents. Really helped a lot. I have desided to keep my wonderful Z1 as I have, as you also mentioned, given it a chance and I love the simplicity of the phone and how fast is it. It was diffiult first, but now I can't imagine me going back to Galaxy. Your posts made me even more secure of my desision Mostly because I can expect some nice roms with root in the future.
I can say I miss root since I want Droidwall app so that I can close WLAN or 3G connection for chosen apps.
