[Q] A few questions regarding the s-off method for Vivid - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Right now I'm following the excellent guide on this forum to root my vivid. So far I my bootloader is unlocked and I'm on s-off part. The guide links me to another forum that says I need to use insulated wire to touch two certain points while running a program. It says the wire has to be a certain gauge and has a video to demonstrate the process. I have run into two problems, however.
The video that is linked has no sound. I don't know if this is a glitch or an act of YouTube or just how the video is. I'm afraid to attempt this knowing I could be missing some important info.
My second issue is that he never actually says what gauge is needed for wire. I take it this is Tue kind of thing I can get at best buy, right?

The video is like that it is meant for you to visually follow the instructions. You have to just do everything the instructions tell you. And the video watch it like 2 times.
Also when doing the wire trick you need to make sure an SD card that is already formatted for your phone is inserted
Ppl think you are supposed to touch o e end to the first little dot then the other end once to the little piece of metal on top of the SD card. But its 1 end to the first part hold it and the other end you need to touch it once for a second then again for another second and it should work... If it doesn't work and you get something like soft failed with other text before it then that means you just didn't do the wire trick correctly... Just do it again it might take you many tries before you achieve s off...
Hope this was help full

wow, I'm glad I asked here before trying or I probably would never get it right. another question. I just bought an SD card and popped it in. How do I make sure its formatted for my phone? Just delete everything on it or is it ready to go?
Thanks for the help!

Try to plug in your phone to the computer and turn on USB storage and if the SD card pops up then it works but I think when you do turn on USB storage it will ask you to format and before this just check I your phones storage see if it shows up there

cool. What about the gauge. Does it have to be really small or is it specific? Is insulated wire any kind of wire that has a plastic cover? I have some spare wire from when I hooked up my surround sound system, I wanna make sure its Tue right kind. sorry for so many questions, I just wanna make sure I don't brick my phone. I really love this thing!

Does not matter at all. I did it with an uninsulated paperclip; I've heard of people doing it with twist-ties.

ARGH! Ok, so I downloaded the program and got the wire ready, but when I try to run controlbear.exe as admin, it says no root detected and forces me to exit! If I'm supposed to do this AFTER I root, why does the superguide tell me to do it BEFORE I root?
Am I missing something?

Kind of. I'll break it down into simple steps for you on how it's written in the superguide.
- Bootloader unlock (not rooted)
- flash WCXrecovery (roots the phone)
- S OFF
- Update HBOOT
- flash WCXrecovery once again
The superguide does tell you to do s off AFTER root.

You are talking about the command "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img" right?
I did do that before running the program. I've tried it twice with the same results.
When I enter the command, it says it worked but something must be wrong.
EDIT
Tried a third time, still no luck. Here is a step by step of what I'm doing:
1. Power off phone and get in to fastboot. Connect to pc and in cmd I enter fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img, the command is executed successfully.
2.Right click ControlBear.exe and run as Admin.
3. Program auto-reboots my phone. When it's fully rebooted it says something like:
Backing up.....
No root detected in backup!
Secondary backup FAILED!!
press ENTER to exit.......

..

I'm pretty sure I'm running stock ICS. In one of my previous attempts at rooting I attempted to change it, but I doubt it worked. Is there a way to check?
EDIT
So I'm just gonna try flashing to stock ROM anyway. Which one of the downloads do I select?
RUU_HOLIDAY_ICS_35_S_Cingular_US_3.26.502.52_Radio_3.02.4740.14_34.22.701040.19L_release_243350_signed.exe

They are both ICS, Cingular is supposed to work for my AT&T Vivid, so what do I choose? Here's the link:

Hi sugarshock,
I had exactly the same error as u with same hboot version.
Do this
goto http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003
and download the tool
only perform recovery for ICS and then perm root
viola no more error message from control bear about root...
hope that helps...

I am not meaning to high jack this thread, but i just had a quick question, I only want root for things like freezing bloat, and on the off chance I decide to trade my Vivid for another phone i have 29 days left to make up my mind. Anyways if I flash WCX Recovery does the stock rom become rooted?

HTC VIVID Super User Problems....

So I am a new person and therefor can not post this in the development thread under the forum where I feel it would belong with the other root related questions.... So i followed the SUPER GUIDE to root my phone (Thank you so much Slapshot and PirateGhost, I was beginning to regret not getting a skyrocket until I found your thread). My super user is running into an issue I can not seem to fix.....
Maybe this is simple or maybe I really messed something up....
Basically none of my apps have root anymore (they did at one point and to my knowledge I change nothing...)
When I go to the Super User app to update my binaries and hopefully get any issues resolved I am greeted by the following error message in the update log: "Failed to find currently installed SU binary. Update cannot continue"
Is there a resolution for this? I have not found anyone even running into the same issue on the Vivid.....
A little nervous.... I didnt have near this many issues rooting my ATRIX and modding the living daylights out of that.
Have you checked with Root Checker Basic to see if you even have Root? If you didn't follow the Super Guide step by step your phone could have relocked after you turned your phone off/on.
If it still fails to update you could try SuperUser Update Fixer.
Yes I have check with root checker.
This may be a dumb question but how do I uninstall Superuser? When I go to the typical application management it does not give me the option. I have done an install again to overwrite the files and nothing changed there.
I followed the instructions step by step (though obviously I messed up somewhere...)

Interesting... maybe your root didn't stick. We had a little trouble with that before but pirateghost fixed the CWM ROOT zip. You have a working CWM Recovery, correct?
In the superguide, I have a second option for root in case the first doesn't work. In your case, go ahead and try the second option. The one involving the supertool. That should get you perm root. If that doesn't even work, then we might have to put you back to stock and go at it again.
EDIT: BEFORE TRYING THE SUPERTOOL, try flashing the new CWM ROOT VER2 zip from CWM recovery and see if root sticks.
Slapshot, thank you for checking the General Thread, I really do appreciate that. I have tried both methods multiple times since the root failure seeing as so many people said they had to run the methods multiple times to make them stick (this admittedly may be part of the issue). The most recent one has been the CWM ROOT VER2. Still no dice. Is there a method to remove and re install super user? Or am I reading into the error too literally and instead I just basically do not have root.

No problem. At this point I think you may just not have root... but first, go ahead and go into bootloader (power off, then power on while holding power and vol down). Does your device say unlocked?
*Just a clarification*
You have to unroot your phone to get rid of it Idk why I put uninstall/reinstall earlier...still out there from last night I guess.

Yes the device still says unlocked. That was one of the first things I checked... Haha....
As I said ive flashed the rooted CWM and it says it went over successfully.
If i use the Zerg exploit it still seems to go over successfully (I realize this has a tenancy to mess with internal storage and only provide a temp root but i do not even get that temp root).
How would I unroot my device? Do you mean flash to stock and relock my boot loader?
As I said I have flashed several devices in the past (Atrix, eee pad transformer, HTC Inspire, HTC DINC, SAMSUNG GALAXY S T-Mobile) but I am not completely up to date on all of the technical terms...

If you are thinking about upgrading to ICS, READ THIS!

There seems to be an influx of posts with users asking for help after bricking/semi-bricking their phone after upgrading using the ph39img method. Upgrading using the PH39IMG.zip is risky if you don't THOROUGHLY understand the steps, it is a bit complex even for those of us who have flashed numerous times when it was the gingerbread. It is hard to know what you are doing even if you are an expert at flashing roms because it completely different and new process.
With that being said, USE THE RUU TO UPGRADE!
Do not use the PH39IMG to upgrade just because it takes too long to download the RUU file, because there is a HIGH chance that you WILL brick your phone if you accidentally miss just one step in the process.
So do yourself a favor, be smart and use the RUU.
Official RUU from AT&T
-make sure to back up your files (that includes internal storage)-
Please forgive me for asking but can you point me to the RUU?
Also, I am unlocked & rooted...can you give me (or point me to) the "dummies simple guide" to flashing with the RUU?
I have flashed my older Captivate many times and many previous WM6 phones but not up on the HTC and Vivid yet... I apologize!

Yeah, it looks like if you are on stock, you can now update through phone AT&T software update in settings. Hopefully it's a much smoother upgrading process.

I am on stock ROM that came on the phone, just unlocked and rooted and most of the bloat gone...I thought I read somewhere a couple of days ago that it wouldn't give it to me OTA unless I re-locked. Is this correct?
I guess I could try it but it's middle of the day, I'm at work...can't mess with it right now so just checking!

I believe you will need to Re-Lock. I'm guessing that OTA and just running the EXE will result in the same thing if you are unlocked. No Go.
This probably isn't the proper thread to post this in but it is somewhat related.
Got home tonight and wanted to do this. Ran across the below link and it sounded detailed and easy enough...so...I decided to try it.
Well, I got down to step 15 and after that it automatically rebooted or something and it seems from there I can't do step 16, 17 and on. I can get to HBOOT but it never asked to update the PH39IMG.
What do I need to do now? Now if I try to boot the phone up I get stuck at the HTC splash screen.

Do you mean the PH39IMG file? And I'm not sure how to check that since I can't connect the phone to the computer after booted and see it as a drive. All I can get to is fastboot.
I did notice that on the site with the directions it says the PH39IMG file is 35.6MB and I d/l'd it twice and it shows 35.5MB on my computer. Not sure if that means anything or not.
Is there a way to see what's on the SD card without the phone booting?

Ah...that would be the, or one of the, problem then...I put it on the phone. I'm accustomed to that from the phone I came from where the phone memory was often referred to as the SD card (because it was one it just couldn't be removed). I have no SD card in my phone that is removable. Yeah......

[Q] How many on Rogers DARED to take the S-OFF plunge?

I've been debating waiting for the official Rogers ICS upgrade to get the new hboot or going S-OFF with the wire trick process.
I'm getting closer and closer to doing the wire trick, but seems like a slightly more dangerous process than I'm use to. I'm usually very happy to root/s-off my phones with software, but a little hardware trick seems like an extra step.
Was wondering how many fellow Rogers Raider users have taken the plunge and how many are waiting...
i did mine, im on rogers
so easy to install lets say darkrider rom with s-off
I did it on mine, wasn't bad at all
Bell RaiderRider here. Exactly same device as Rogers's. I SOFFed and it worked like a charm. I am also under Dark Raider.
Sent from my HTC Raider 4G LTE running ICS.
I spent an hour getting S-off. And I'm sure I made lots of wrong connections. Its fairly safe. If you carefull ull be fine. Follow the directions.
If you need to sim unlock. Do it before you flash other roms. My phone is rogers and I flashed to ICS and couldn't sim unlock. I had to flash back to stock so I could unlock to use with telus.

Need of S OFF on HTC
Hey BRO,
A little update on HTC Vivid S OFF!!!!!!!
S OFF is very much necessary, if you wish to install Custom ROM's, Bcos without S OFF the kernel does not get flashed at all. I tried flashing various ROM's like DarkRaider, HOLICS, RumFloat etc... the ROM gets installed and you get the complete looks but certain hardwares does not work at all ( Wifi, Wifi tethering etc..) and even if the OC does not change!!!!!
Its very simple to do the S OFF and I have checked a lot of reviews who have done the S OFF, and so far I have'nt seen a case of getting the phone bricked.
I would like to share few things what I did for the S OFF.
I was basically on the AT&T Official ICS.
Step 1. I used the Hasoons All in one kit to unlock the bootloader as well as to install the recovery mode.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498003
Note: Do not use any other options from this tool other than unlocking bootloader and installing the recover CWM.
Step 2. Then I installed a custom rooted ROM eg: DarkRaider so far the best, RumFloat many u might find and make sure its for ICS alone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1586613
Step3. Simply fask the Custom ROM with the help of CWM and now your phone is fully rooted, please verify the same by installing a program which needs rot access like titanium backup etc..
Step4. NOW is the time when you can do the S OFF, why we installed customer ROM pre-rooted is because, we need the phone to be rooted before doing the S OFF.
Its very simple just follow the steps basically on the following site.
http://unlimited.io
1. Install the software mentioned on the above link according to your phone model and the computer OS.
2. Then RUN the program as a Administrator after connecting the phone via USB cable and make sure the USB debugging is turned ON on the phone.
3. The program will automatically detect the phone and the program will prompt you to do the wire trick. Without any hesitation go ahead and do the wire trick and you can see the message like phone is gonna reboot and then turn your phone and look on the screen and you can see the message S OFF.
Hope this must have helped you as well as increase your confidence in doing the hard wire trick!!!!!
After getting the S OFF!! Flash the Custom ROM and under software version if you check the kernel details, you will find the change!!!!
Eg: Before you do anything check and see the Kernel, you can see the stock ICS kernel even after flashing the Custom ROM.
Then I want you to check the Kernel details after flashing the custom ROM right after S OFF. then you will see the new kernel!!!!!!!!!
cool, thanks all, you've convinced me to take the plunge!
now i just need to find an insulated wire somewhere...

Yes !!! Go ahead and you will enjoy using your VIVID after S OFF!!!!!
s-off'ed now!
was sober still after 3 wire tricks and finally got it on the 4th, was almost ready to give up!

I haven't dared yet... but I will probably try soon
Any Rogers Raider got the problem as mine? (ICS/boot loop)
Hi, any rogers's Raider get the problem as mine, at this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26799179#post26799179
basically, it seems the SIM card not compatible for ICS.
I flash back to Roger's stock rom, them very thing works.
But I miss the cool sweep2wake under ICS.
+1
It was easy after READING The instructions a few times over to completely understand thew processes
for those who havent done the wiretrick yet, i figured id toss in my two cents.
i have the vivid and it was the night i got it or the next day that i finally went for it. and it wasnt as hard as i had thought. i know i messed it up a little the first time i tried it, and the phone wouldnt do anything, i panicked and thought i had bricked it, bc not even pulling the battery got the phone to boot, but then i made the connection again and the phone booted, it took another try or two before i got the s-off to work. but i, luckily, got everything working and have enjoyed it.
hope this helps somehow

Then I want you to check the Kernel details after flashing the custom ROM right after S OFF. then you will see the new kernel!!!!!!!!!

ok so im gonna assume your step to s off is also sort of base from this forum " http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696424 " which is using the s off all in one tool kit by hasoon2000. according to this tool you need to have an empty sd card in the sdcard slot when runing the program. once its done it will promt me to do the wire trick (which is also showed in the video in this toolkit on how to do it) but in the video, the card is already removed when performing the trick. thats where i got lost... :/
I did mine also S-OFF
took almost 10 tries
so I guess it's safe
can anyone help me how u guys did it...
i have the s off all in one downloaded. im just confused on the part where u need to have an empty sdcard in my phone while running the program and doin the wire trick after when i saw the card is no more...
i'd really appreciate any help

Amen to that. It's ny turn to do it now Can I borrow your wire??

I beleive the SD card should be inserted while doing this procedure!!!

Ha, I had to do it like 20 times because I was only counting to 1. I used the cheapest wire I could find. Remember though, you can get away with using other ROMs if you want some stock ICS action.

Ics v28e update without USB question

Can someone advise me on whether it is possible to update to the new Rom without the use of a USB.
My g\f's phone doesn't have usb its bust for some reason.
Is there any other way to load the latest 5.0 cwm, the new bootloader and then install a zip from cwm.
Any help is much appreciated.

1) You should clarify the title. Something like "How to update to v28E without USB". Imagine every thread like "LG P990 question", it's absurd.
2) You should tell us if you want the vlite or the full version of v28E.
3) CWM 5.0 is not the latest.
4) Yes, it is possible, put everything in the sd card =P.
Good luck.
Hello, apologies for that.
Thank you for the fast response.
I would like to install the full version, I am aware that you need to specifically partition the ad, but I can read grains thread for that.
Can I just confirm then, that if there is a zip for the new downloader, cwm and Rom in one zip.
That can be run from cwm?
Thank you

First -- In case you want to go full metal on P990, that means repartitioning, new BB and full flash, you need to flash. There is no other way than using NVFlash, as described in lovely thread in development by Stephan G.
Reasons - reformatting is not easily done from within phone which runs on these partitions, same goes for reflashing recovery from within recovery.
Second -- not sure why without USB?
Third -- there is CWM-possible way by using TonypAndHarsh's vlite V28E rom, yet this goes without new BB and with possibility of no call audio issue.
So, to repeat my answer to your main point, no. There is no way to fully install new system/BB without USB connection and PC. You have to flash it.
Hello. I think you can instal the new ICS without your usb cable.
1. you need to instal rom manager from PlayStore and flash from here the CWM recovery. I recomend you to instal the version 5.2.0
2. Make a nandroid backup before you do something to your actual rom.
3. Use titanium backup to backup all your apps and settings.
4. Put ICS rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1959545 in your sd card (i think you have at leat a card reader and on adapter to put your microsd card) and follow the isntruction from the download page.
Good luck!
Cool thank you will try tomorrow.

I'm sorry but I disagree with you... I think that anyone that thinks about the title for 2 seconds can understand that if the guy is asking if it's possible to flash v28e without USB of course he means the "full" stock ICS leak, the one which requires you to redo your partitions and whatnot... the one that is only possible through nvflash, thus, it is not possible to update to v28e without USB.
Or, you could just reply... hey, it's not possible to flash "the real deal", but you can flash tonyp's "lite" version, which uses the old bootloader and a patched kernel (thus some bugs might come from that) and all you need to do is put the files in the sd card...
I don't know why you had to be so "blunt"...

Thank you for that information, I am currently trying to find out if there is a way to install the right version of CWM, then try to install the new bootloader from within CWM? I am not even sure if that is possible.
I think she is just going to have to get her phone sent back, the only problem is the o2x is discontinued, I doubt they will replace it or fix it. They will probably try and replace it, but only give her something that I wouldn't consider a good replacement. But we'll have to speak to her insurance company first.
I have seen these phones selling on ebay, they are about £100 from what I can gather, it depends what she wants to do. Could buy a new one and sell her one, just a shame really, i found another thread about the USB problem and they had to send it back and get it repaired, must be either a problem with the connection or the board, I would think the board as it charges fine, which is really weird.
Anyway, thank you for you help, i will keep searching to see what i can find.

Just cause you didnt mention it before, but are you running a hacked version of ICS right now on the phone? If you are, it could be a matter of the ADP drivers on your computer? If it was a stupid idea sry. It was just something that pop'd into my head

I got a bug on my O2X USB as well, and I managed to solve it temporary, (the bug comes back after some time, but the process has worked for me everytime the bug comes back, I'm currently testing to try to identify the cause of the bug), it is kind of a long process but I could get back my usb sync, if you want I made a tutorial of what I exactly did, after this process you can install any stock or custom rom without any problem just make sure to follow the instructions as they are described

If you have any doubt about my post, I would be pleased to help you with that
thanks for giving it a try

Hi
I downloaded a stock Rom that had been modded.
So I could be sure that I would have cwm in case anything went wrong.
Rom loaded and was able to get into the secret menu.
I will say that under USB connection type there was misspelling where it said:
LG USB adnroid
Not sure if that would affect it.
I selected that item.
Then went to port.
Selected the different options in ordered and waited about 10 seconds on each turn, then pressed find any changes in device manager unplugged and plugged the USB.
Then tried in different orders but with not luck.
Took the battery out and tried holing the vol up down the plugging in USB but to no avail.
Then pressed power and vol down.
The phone tuned on and showed LG sign then switched off.
I tried pressing check any changes as the LG sign came on but nothing.
Then tried nvflash as the LG sign came on but nvflash showed no connection.
Very weird, definitely dead but still charges, doesn't make sense.
Oh well
Ordered an atrix with work and play kit for 68 quid, has a broken digitizer which will cost 20 pound, on average, off ebay.
Thanks for the help though.
May take the 2x apart when new phone comes and see if there's any physical damage on te board.

[Q] Tried to get my One back to Stock, gone wrong somehwere

Hi, recently the screen broke on my 2 week old HTC One.
Amazon were kind enough to send me a new one, but I had modded the hell out of the first one (using various online tutorials to root and then ROM it), and now have the need to return it.
So I followed various tutorials to try and restore it back to 100% stock. (Didn't bother making it "Locked" rather than "Unlocked").
What I did was I used the HTC One All-In-One Toolkit, and "relocked bootloader". I then tried to flash the RUU, all went well, but when I try to start it up after, it gives a blank black screen. However, after giving it a while, holding the power button, or pressing the back button sometimes results in a vibration, so I'm presuming that it is starting, but not displaying anything. I was hoping that my phone would come up in windows so I could re-flash twrp and flash Sense that way, but it does not appear.
I tried factory resetting in this state, but when I try boot it up after that, a logo comes up which is a phone, with 2 green arrows forming a circle inside it, then a green arrow pointing down inside that.
Also, flashing twrp.img seems to go well, but when select "recovery", nothing happens, it just seems to boot up normally.
I am now at a loss of ideas, as this process was suggested by all the sources I could find, and it works perfectly for them, see no reason for it not to for me.
If anyone has any idea how to fix this, please, please respond as quickly as possible, it has to be with Amazon by the 4th, and I have no clue what to do!
Thanks,
-Accudio
yeah i got the point here, just one question, are you S-OFF or not? if yes, which is you bootloader?

No, I'm S-ON, when I first did it I was a bit of a noob, and none of the tutorials I followed said anything about S-ON/S-OFF. Only just found out about it when researching how to put it back. :/
You can't access recovery because your phone is locked, so first off you need to unlock again your phone

adb commands work in recovery too.
either use "adp push rom.zip /sdcard/" or use the sideload method
Thanks a lot guys, you've been a great help! 2 more questions for you if you don't mind:
1. The ROM I found doesn't seem to work properly, so have you got any ideas of ROMs of Sense 5, no root, so it will appear to amazon that it is stock, even if it isn't exactly, or do you know where I can get an RUU and how to flash it to get my phone back to exactly stock?
2. This won't be a big deal, but how could I achieve S-OFF to revert my HTC recovery to say "Locked" rather than "Tampered" and "Relocked"
If they aren't possible, no big deal, just would be nice if I can. Again, thanks a ton, you've saved my neck! xD
EDIT: I am downloading a different ROM to try, so hopefully that will work better.

1. Just download a stock odexed rom from the development section. There are many to choose from.
OR
Pick a RUU from here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39588860
2. Use this link to do that. Then read the instructions on how to reset the flags.
Did amazon really replace your broken phone for free? Thats what I call customer service. Too bad I bought mine from ATT.
THIRD OPTION:
Download http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2353083
And remove supersu.apk from the zip file before you flash it.

Yeah, I dropped it onto my carpet and the screen cracked pretty majorly, so I contacted HTC pretty annoyed (as you can expect), and they said that I must have had a dodgy model for it to have broken so easily. Amazon was reluctant but because I had HTC's word they sent me a free replacement.

You should be able to unlock your bootloader again with the unlockcode.
If I'm not mistaken, in order to flash a RUU you need to:
- Flash stock recovery.img through bootloader+fastboot
- Flash stock boot.img through bootloader+fastboot
RUU should flash now whether bootloader is locked, unlocked or relocked.
