[Kernel][AOSP][v2][Updated 5/19] Tab 2 GT-P3113 kernel OC/UC/UV/GPUOC 448mhz etc. - Galaxy Tab 2 7" Android Development

Here's a simple kernel for AOSP based ROMS like CM9 and AOKP. Works for my tab. Can't say how it will run for you. Let me know.
v2
Added Wheatley Governor and some associated CPUidle and C4 sleep patches to maximize effectiveness of the governor (thanks to Ezekeel)
allow cpu to go to sleep/deepidle while using hardware accelerated video/audio playback
enable powering down mpu logic during C4 / deep sleep to reduce power usage
Doh. Forgot to enable them when building the kernel...
Other misc. tweaks to Cpufreq and governors
Set 150mhz fuse opp to 50 OPP offset for voltage stability at lowest frequency
Change 150mhz slot to 180mhz to prevent SODs
Lower mpu vdd max to maximum value allowed by omap twl
Gets rid of errors and problems when using 1350mhz+
Removed Samsung's "Touch Boost"
Before, every time you touched the screen, the cpu frequency would shoot up, whether it was needed or not.
Removed Samsung's CPU frequency limits and locks
Removed touchscreen factory debug stuff and an annoying debug that was notifying you every time you touch and lifted your finger off the screen
Fsync off to improve file system read/write performance
Probably some other stuff I'm forgetting...
v1
MPU frequencies from 150mhz to 1350mhz
150mhz slot given unique FUSE_OPP for lower SmartReflex calibrated voltages seperate from 300mhz slot
1350mhz slot running at 1200mhz FUSE_OPP to keep voltages down
GPU overclocked to 448mhz
448mhz GPU slot using same OPP as stock 307mhz slot to keep voltages down
Undervolted across the board
but really irrelevant due to SmartReflex calibrations
SIO scheduler
Lazy governor added
RCU priority boosting
Other tweaks
OnDemand or Lazy recommended

Runs great with build four of CM9. I had mine at 1350 and it seems super quick. Did some benchmarks and got better scores than I ever have before.
Thanks for this and I hope you keep it going. I will always run this kernel if you do.

Thanks for the feedback. It took a lot of work considering a lot of samsung specific stuff was done by hand and figured out by myself. Good to know the hard work is appreciated
I'm also very happy to see you're experiencing increased performance. Especially since performance hasn't really been my focus. Considering the *major* changes I made with v2 like removing Sammy's frequency boosting on touch and removing their tweak to occasionally lock the frequency at ~600mhz would seemingly decrease responsiveness, I'm very pleased to see this hasn't impacted performance. Removing these should save battery with most governors. (Or at the very least my other tweaks like disabling fsync are offsetting the responsiveness hit from removing those tweaks which is still great.)
Oh and you should update your quadrant as it looks like you are using an old version not optimized for ICS and dual cores. Scores seem about the same tho with about a 1000 point boost compared to stock. (But benchmarks are still pretty meaningless .)
______________________________
For anyone trying out the kernel, I would greatly appreciate it if you would try out wheatley and let me know how it works for you in regards to battery life. It should be a *huge* performance boost, and if you guys find it doesn't impact battery too much or at all I may make it the default.

I need more information. Which ROM where you using? Which boot logo? The Samsung one or the ROM one? Did you try flashing over a clean ROM? Did you wipe anything? etc.etc. Thanks for the feedback!
Wait... You tried to flash this on a Galaxy Tab 2 7inch, not the Asus Transformer right? Just need to makes sure .
EDIT:
If you savvy, willing, and have adb set up, it would be a big help if you could send me a copy of dmesg / kmsg.txt as its trying to boot. To get kmsg you'd connect your tab to your computer and type " adb shell cat /proc/kmsg > /mnt/extSdCard/kmsg.txt " which will obviously place it on your sdcard. A logcat would be great too with adb logcat.

Is there any chance you can package your kernel for the stock ROM? I'm sticking with stock until CM9/AOKP ROMS are a bit more matured.

No not for now. Sorry. Dsb9938 (who makes the custom touchwiz kernel here on xda) has already pulled many of my v2 modifications to his kernel source. His next kernel update should have a lot of what I have here.

Well that doesn't even make sense. Touchwiz kernels work for AOKP but AOSP won't no matter how hard I try. Super. I tried flashing dsb's over CM9 once. Wouldn't boot.
I even tried compiling the stock kernel included with Blackice Rom for GTab2 (bases on AOKP) with its stock ramdisk and it STILL had the SGX graphics files error out and crash... I really don't know what's going on here....
Ahh well I've made some nice updates for v3 that work great on CM9........

Any chance of this great work making to the SGT2 10.1? I hear the build for the 7 & 10.1 are very similar ecxept for the screen resolutions.
Im running stock rooted on my tab2 10.1 and its all good specially with bloatware removed, but im lacking the ICS look CM9 gives the 7' tab.
For some reason development seems a bit stagnant in the tab2 10.1 forum.
Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Pp.

Would love aokp support.

Absolutely loving this kernel! I do have a question though. I was wondering if you are familiar with the voodo sound/plus app in the market. I've read nothing but great things about it so i decided to purchase it. I quickly learned that this kernel is not compatible with it. I was wondering if that is something that you could look into. Keep up the good work!!!

Yes. I know about voodoo sound. I've already been looking into it for a while. It would require porting custom drivers and stuff, and I haven't the time at the moment. Eventually I'll take a closer look.
You're actually very luck considering we have a very similar DAC to the one Voodoo sound is designed for. Otherwise that would have been a dumb purchase. Well it still kind of was considering you didn't know if our device had kernels supporting it and you didn't know whether or not it was even possible for our kernels to support it at all . Oh well lucky you .
So TL;DR- There's a good chance I or someone else can port it in time.

My infuse has the voodoo sound. I had wondered if this device had the same chipset for sound.
Thanks for sharing.

Any luck Overclocking?

Hello, first I just wanted to say coming from a Droid X I LOVE this phone and LTE. I am all rooted and just wanted to know if anyone has had any luck with overclocking the CPU, and if so, how and with what app? I know it's already ridiculously fast, I just wanted to know if it could be done. Thanks
We don't have CWM yet, so no custom ROMs which means no overclock yet.
Oh ok...I knew how to root it but am still learning how a lot of the rest works. Thanks for the info
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
You could do a mild oc in the droid x on the stock rom... 1.25.... I'd take that right now
Is overclocking even necessary? I think it's very fast out of the box.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC
It isn't about what you NEED to do - it is about what you WANT to do
Does a Ferrari need to top 200?...No, but it's a lot of fun making fast things go even faster and pushing them to their limit (but no it doesn't NEED it lol)
speak for yourselves.... coming from a Sensation... I NEED IT!!! lmao

CWM has really no bearing when it comes to overclocking a phone with a locked bootloader. If you cant change the kernel then you can overclock using CWM. An app like Android Overclock that loads the module once booted is required, that app only needs root and the appropriate module.
So are you saying it is possible right now with the "Android Overclocking" app. I was under the impression there was no OC until we could customize the kernel. Has anyone actually tried and achieved this? I cruise these forums constantly and I have seen no posts touting running 1.5ghz OC'd. I know it's only $1.50 but I don't want to spend that when 1. SetCPU is free (I tried, no OC). Is this comparable or does Android Overclocking get around this somehow?
2. I have doubts anyone is OC'd yet without a whisper here or rootzwiki.
The way I understand it (not a dev but alot of experience with flashing coming from the OGDroid). The kernel has slots (in my experience 5 or 7 slots) where the frequencies are very specifially laid out at like 300, 600, 800, 1.0ghz, 1.2ghz *example*) I am not sure what the specific slot numbers are on the stock kernel but I don't think an app can change kernel function on that level or at all.
Well I've been looking into this for a while and with no luck I've tried severally overclockers, quick clock being my favorite. But none of them work, they will either crash or freeze up, haven't had any crash the divice tho. So far it seems there just isn't enough focus on the clock yet, with cm and 2nd int right around the bend. All in good time

If you want to OC your Bionic join the cause, there are a bunch of us searching for the solution to every rooted Bionic with a locked bootloader...
Re: Android Overclock
Nope, Android Overclock fashes a message on install that states you need a different kernel to OC. Bummer-worked up to 1.3Ghz on my D2, but no joy on Bionic.
Why does anybody need an overclocked dual core processor at this point in the game???
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Like others have stated it's not a need but more of a want. I am in the same boat and would like to work this beast to it's fullest. I have had no lag and no problems but the want to crank the Bionic up is just killing me. Hopefully we will see something soon.
Yea, its not a need.... well at least not yet, eventually this phone will be outdated of course, anyway it woyuld allow for xtream multitasking,

Are you using a kernel

Stock? Bricked? Xenon? They seem a bit outdated and people seem to be having some issues in the thread, should I stick to the one that comes with CM9?
I have never used a different kernel. I dont see the point when we can already overclock the stock one and it runs super smooth already.

That would be great, for some reason Every rom is always at some point randomly causing reboots, no overclock
Can't find out why

cm9 nightly droid 3 overclock

Ok I've been trying to overclock this phone a nice how to would ne awsome so Iam running cm9 nightly latest from hash of codes I would like to change cpu speed any way to modify this. I'm not new to android but obviosly am no dev how to use terminal emulator to achive this I'm running the dev/tty the not shure what command to use from there. Or possiblie a module or script to run thnx
Some users are finding they're "overclocked" out of the box on the new builds. If I recall correctly speed is bogomips x 2, so you're already 20% faster than some users. This is likely due to TI/Motorola binning the chips, but it may also have been done to prevent overheating elsewhere in the system even if the CPU is capable. All the overclocked ROMs I've seen have gone as far as the 1.2GHz mark so we may be maxed out at this point due to limitations elsewhere.

But not shure what to type in to bring up The spot where all the data is stored for the cpu commands or to see the kernel info also I can try to determin from there I'm trying to see if not I got the sbf no worries for me at all any who I'm trying to get all the people together to work this lil thing out of cm9 try to get this going for peps who wanna save battery and go faster. I open chmod in terminal but where do Igo from there or if im even going the right direction please help
You are going to have to build it in to your rom or you can use one of TeamHaters CM9 roms. The kexec roms will not support any overclocking at the moment.

Yes, of course, you're sure leading the innovation and development.
You're just a spoiled brat asking for something you don't fully understand.
Overclocking our device is not going to make great differences now or even when it's stable.
To "run 20 things at once" we need RAM, not processor speed.
Overclocking doesn't save battery either.
Why do I even bother.

Some CPU's are marked at e-fuse level to be not stable on speeds higher than 1ghz on the factory, and the kexec kernel seems to be addressing that, according to a comment made on the kexec rom thread.

Spelling isn't the problem. Try some punctuation.
Because cm9 is meant to be stable and fast. Since various devices react differently to being overclocked, it would introduce instabilities in some devices. That's why the performance section of settings in cm roms says, if you change these settings, do not file bug reports. Once kexec cm9 is fully operational, im sure someone will build a oc kernel

Kernels for the Nexus 7

I am opening this thread as I feel there is room for discussion on the amazing Nexus 7 and the incredible Kernels available .. so feel free to post your opinions.
Lets help the newcomers make the appropriate choice (difficult)
Lets talk about
-Performance ( normal usage, gaming..)
-Battery life
-Features
-Device support (internal and external)
-Rom support
-General requests to all devs
At the moment of this writing we can count on
-TRINITY
-MOTLEY
-FAUX123
-STOCK (of course)
-FRANCO
-CLEMSYN'S
-ATLANTIS
-AQUARIA
And the list shall continue and updated
So lets hear your opinions and preferences.
Cheers

I've used stock, cm10's kernel, the faux kernel (briefly), trinity (briefly), atlantis, and _motley's.
I stuck with _motley's. Best kernel I've used on pretty much any device. Superbly fast, linaro-optimized, great voltage tables, incredibly stable, and completely glitch-free
Currently running 1.1.1, undervolted by 100mV, all default clock speeds, interactive/deadline, and a 512MB zRam
Pure butter
Faux's "mainline" kernel releases is a balance of performance and good battery life, undervolted my N7 to -75mV. It's so much better(in my opinion) than the default kernels of stock, cm10 and AOKP. Gaming-wise it's definitely very optimized. I've yet to try other custom kernels. Been a fan of his kernels since from htc one x and now in N7.
Tapatalked from my HOX
I prefer _motley's mostly because I can see most of what was changed/added in the changelog, and it works nicely
Trinity is straight to the point by generally saying what is tweaked, which is nice, but I just like to see what is changed. Also the app for Trinity kernels seemed to show strange behavior when I last used it with settings either not sticking, or changing randomly, but I believe there was a reason for this explained in the thread.
Faux's is nice as well mostly because of the other linux kernel parts used, but doesn't allow for disabling of fsync (while I respect Faux's decision on not allowing the option; I prefer speed over stability) which is pretty much the only reason I don't use it now.

Disabling fsync also saves a decent amount of battery
I just got my N7 four days ago and since I am a flash addict I tried most of them always sticking to the same Rom (EOS) in order to make a fair comparison.
.
I like Trinity very much.. is a no-hassle kernel..but as I was with Faux's magnificent work since the days of the Atrix, I decided to give his newest 008 a shot.
I find it to be well balanced (performance/battery) ..
I have not UVd any. I prefer the dev set of tables and come to a conclusion from his own work.

Call me dumb but how do you turn fsync off? Via an app like system tuner?

I am suprised at the battery performance of Faux's 008. I've been on for more than 6 hours now and I am still at 93%

For some reason Trinity is having unstable releases lately. I switched to faux's 10 ultimate. Is great.

Well yes, 100 was somehow unstable, then released 110 ( no OC ) and in the past few hours 111 which I haven't tried yet. Franco released r6 as well which I hvent tried either

Certainly you did for those who have your app installed or following your thread closely. It would be easier if you posted new releases eitthr in the OP or thread header.. just a suggestion.

thanks for the assumptions, but not true. the kernels are always posted at derkernel.com right away, for those with the app and without. all you have to do is look. or, you can opwn the thread and read it from the last page, youd see that a111 has been out. there is never a kernel released for people with the app first, we do not play that game, that is wrong. it either released to all the public or its not released at all, end of story.

Oh, don't take me wrong.. I am not making any assumptions nor suggesting that you have any kind of preference for those who have the app. No Sir. I have the app but at the moment not being used because I am with another kernel.
When reading der-kernel as I do on a dayly basis, it states ( not the precise words ) "all kernels are 1600 except if stated otherwise in the file name". Good.

mudslinging? no. im just a firm believer of truth. but, how about the word instigator, you recognize it
we are having a healthy discussion. sometimes people dont agree in discussions, and thats normal. if we did agree, then there wouldnt be a discussion on it. but theres no mudslinging going on at all, and we are being friendly.

then its i that made the assumption
anyways, the "all kernels are 1600 except if stated otherwise in the file name" is really for all the other trinity kernels for other devices. i do agree with you though, that morfic should change that since the n7 kernels dont have the cpu speed included in the name except for the tsvz kernels(they are all 1400mhz).

K so I've been trying to read up on this kernel business and not had any luck. I don't consider myself super tech savvy but at the same time I'm not an idiot. Could someone tell me what this does? Do I flash it like another ROM? Or just point me in the right direction.

Whoa there are still people here in this forum! Look at the future changelog for r2 I would've preferred adding these to r1 but I don't own a Vivid so other people will have to test those features to make sure that they work.

For jellybean...your gonna want to base the source off this https://github.com/htc-msm8660/android_kernel_htc_msm8660 it contains a lot of fixes that the outdated kangbang source doesn't have...
Btw, great to have another dev around look forward to your work...maybe you can help with the call volume issues since your used to MSM8660 devices...then again our vivid seems to always have unique fixes

Will vouch for android1234567 as i have been using his kernel since the sensation. I guarantee none of you will get rid of the vivid once you feel the full sultan kernel with crossbreeder and frandom support.
will pledge another donation for when it. catches up to tje senny r20.8

I didn't want to use Intervigilium's source because Intervigilium decided to make his source as close to stock as possible. What that means is no voltage control, overclock, GPU overclock, etc., basically nothing unique. Also, since I don't actually own a Vivid, patching that source with all those features would be difficult because I'd have to be testing everything after adding a feature (to make sure that it's working properly and that it boots up).
I also looked at the commit history and there isn't any fix that's crucial or necessary for the Holiday, so there is no downside to using KangBang source. If I find a commit that's interesting in Intervigilium's commit history then I'll just patch the KangBang source with it.

R1 already has frandom support Most of the performance features from my Sensation kernel are in r1, but there are still a few left that I'll have you all test.

so its different to the test3 you sent earlier... thee goo. im server is currently down... either way cant wait.
kernel tuner tells me that mpdecision turns off... knowing the issues with the senny il uninstall it and keep an eye with system panel lite instead
antutu gave me a score of 8192 on your test3 release with 1566mhz cpu

"Server Offline. Please hang tight while we get this resolved."
just got home... oh well happy to wait :victory:
also you probably may want to include the original crossbreeder link to your op as not many kernels support it and not many even knowing about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113150
as i'm selling both my sensations, i never really got to try that swap you added.. will read about it in the other thread.. i'm guessing its different or supplementary to the other mod with swap in cache?

Whaaaat Goo.im is down again
The Aroma installer for r20.8 of my Sensation kernel has an option for softswap, however, because I don't have a physical device to test, an Aroma installer is out of the question with this kernel. With an Aroma installer I have to check if the settings will work, which mods work with the phone, the directories for all the settings, etc. Sorry =\
ALSO, all kernels support CrossBreeder but very few kernels support frandom. Frandom makes CrossBreeder much faster; this is feature #5 of CrossBreeder:
idcrisis said:
5. Frandom support - CrossBreeder now supports linking both your random devices to the extremely fast alternative - Frandom ( http://billauer.co.il/frandom.html ). This module is orders of magnitude (10-50 times) faster than the standard character devices ( Check this out - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37409586&postcount=134 ). The erandom character device also installed by Frandom doesn't use up system entropy at all on top of being fast. You will need to ask your ROM developer to develop the kernel module for you and then place it in /system/lib/modules. CrossBreeder will then try and load it and if successful, make all the necessary adjustments so that both /dev/random and /dev/urandom are pointing to /dev/frandom and /dev/erandom respectively. The speed benefits are to be seen to be believed. But since each ROM requires a unique kernel module, this option is left optional ( but auto detect ).

Awesome, love to have another friendly helper to get us some nice new hardware drivers [read: kernel], as we are lacking in that dept right now. So, I am sure I speak for many others, the little Vivid community is very grateful for whatever you can bring to us .

Awesome! I'm trying this out currently. Seems VERY fast! I'll give it a couple days to see what the battery life is like. I am skeptical that we can get THIS much performance increase without battery life going into the toilet, but I'm hopeful anyway.
One thing I was hoping for would be increased in-call volume, which seems to be the same so far. Volume controls still don't affect the vol level in-call. No confirmation on if the echo is gone for the person you're speaking to. I'll update when I find out.
Either way, it's GREAT to have more options Thanks for your hard work, especially considering you don't even have a Vivid!
EDIT: Update - CRT-Off is missing (or excluded)

None of vivid kernel don't have OTG Host support.
it will be great if you add this to your kernel.
i have try to add this to an htc source kernel, it work but some modules like wifi,.. don't work after that (don't have enough knowledge)
