Does Sense stop working? - HTC Sensation XL

I wanna ask especialy the dev's or someone who knows better.
Does Sense stop working when you use another Launcher?
Coz frankly if not what's the point to use one anyway, when the Launcher drains your battery like hell. I installed Apex Launcher for ICS but the battery life was terrible.....

Its working. You can turn off it in setting/application

Oh yeah i did that but after few second's it starts itself. And as i saw the Sense is not 3.6 it's 3.5.221. Well i guess that would not get away unless i root the phone

Unfortunately, unless you root generally Sense will always boot itself back up in the background. It's a huge pain in the a**
If you want to avoid rooting then I guess staying on sense is your best bet.
But if you just root your stock ROM then you could delete the apk and use the launcher. That may help

Thanks for the advice. But i kinda wanted to keep the launchers close to my "heart" and use them whenever i want

If I remember good. I saw somewhere a script blocking a defined luncher.
When i get up i will look for the link but i think was somewhere on xda HD 2 LEO.

Would be nice but again, i got to be rooted....right?

I don't remember but i think yes
This for non rooted phone. I can't find this script now ;/

Thank for the effort stona175 But that was the first thing i ever did. And it stops just the home screen. Widgets, lockscreen everything else is working. It will wait till i go rouge and root

Looking for a nice LOCK SCREEN

I have rooted my phone and am using CyanogenMod 4.2.14.1
I was wondering if there are any interesting lock screens I could use. My criteria:
1. NOT the ones in the marketplace, have tried them out and don't really like any of them
2. FREE - this is a minor request and definitely not something I want to pay for (heck I've already paid $400 for the phone!!)
3. relatively easy to install. I managed to root my phone with SPL 1.76.007 which took a looong time and was difficult so I know my way around it. BUT, I am not willing to take any risks. I don't mind flashing something, but, that's probably the extent to which I want to take risks.
The screen itself:
1. Simple but with useful features, such as music changing ability, battery status, etc.
2. Some sort of password/lock code (not essential)
3. Background image
Thanks!
then stericson's lockscreen seems to be the one for you.

Have you looked the cmupdater themes? I am using the grey-white lockscreen and it is clean, sleek, and have gotten a lot of people wanting me to root their phones now....

How do I get the themes? I'm actually using this in the themes directory (of cmupdater): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592377 to update my kernel on my phone whenever CyanogenMod is updated.
So, where can I get themes from and which one would you recommend.

boot into recovery and flash it on top of your rom
Thanks it worked.
Are there any other options? This one isn't bad but it seems a bit useless to me. Bit odd that you have to press a button to see the battery when it's right there on top!

Nope that's pretty much it. I know hero and eclair roms have a different lockscreen but they don't work for 1.6 roms. Only other option is to flash a hero/eclair rom or get one from the market. If you want one like the iPhone then get lock 2.0. Its not half bad.
I like having the battery button on the lockscreen. The battery on top gives some indication as to howmuch battery you have left but I like knowing exactly how much life is left in my baby lol

Thanks for the response.
Not unhappy with this one per se, but, it just doesn't do it for me.
Lock 2.0 is actually pretty good but I'm in Singapore and I don't have access to the paid market (which in the long run is a good thing!) and the free version has too many restrictions. I can't even add a background.
My main thing is I want a nice clock and background and battery display. This Stericson one does all that but it just feels a bit "meh" to me. Not sure why, not blown away ...Guess I'll survive!
If anyone knows of anything (theme or lock screen) to spice things up do let me know!
email me [email protected]
Does anybody know of a theme or something to make the default lockscreen
transparent??
use lockbot on the market, its pretty good. theres a free version and its still good

flipclock for 1.5 sense roms, now working!

UPDATE: seems to work fine for most people by just flashing, my phone had different problems.
it does work with this method when having trouble otherwise: wipe, fresh installation of mcr3.1/2, boot and do the setup, flash the clock. a wipe is not mandatory, it has proven to work without a wipe in many cases now. should work on all 1.5 sense roms.
in every case make a nandroid backup before! then flash the zipfile as usual from the recovery menu, no need to delete anything manually before.
who wonders what this is about, from 0:12 in this video. the flipclock was removed by htc in the 2.73 series roms, probably for performance reasons. since (especially) paul and teknologist have done a lot on the performance side it is worth a try IMHO. so far the feedback is good, ppl don't seem to notice an impact on the performance.

animations are always bad to capture in a screenshot. this is the regular 2x4 hero clock widget with the digits flipping over as animation, as it was in the 1.76.x roms. the animation was removed for performance reasons, but since a lot has changed performancewise i think it is worth a try.
i'll see if i can dig up a video. edit: there you go, about 13 seconds in.

what rom are you using? do you experience any performance lags? do all apps work, i think i had problems with connectbot while the clock was installed?
and we still have to wait for long term results, i hope it doesn't drain the battery...
btw, it is still not working for me, dammit!
the latest Modaco rom 3.1, i wasn't getting any lag switching from screen to screen but i did go back to my back up cause it was abit annoying wait a few seconds to know what the time is, i didn't test all my apps lol all i did was surf the inter-web. All i did was to flash it as an update.zip and for me it worked perfectly

i leave that as an exercise to the reader flashed enough today, going to bed now. nandroid is your friend. my bet: won't work. try wiping, flashing the rom, do the initial setup, then flash the clock. and keep us posted
Flashed, clock still displays, force closes when the flip should happen.

this was taken from a gsm rom, so i wouldn't expect it to work in a cdma rom. i replied to a thread in the cdma section pointing them here, my guess would be that the procress has to be redone with cdma sources. i can't do this without having access to the running rom.

so i was right you could check logcat for errors, but tbh i don't think there is much that can be done, given the closed source nature of the sense framework.

ok, the easiest way to say this: the person who wants to try this needs to hold a cdma hero in his hands. the actual device, you can not do it with just the rom.

Just got my Nexus One, need some getting started advice!

Hi all, I just got my first Android phone (which is obviously the Nexus One) and I've gone through and set up some widgets, got apps, etc. I have a few questions.
Does running multiple widgets kill the battery faster?
(I guess that was really it).
Also, are there any really good getting started with Android guides out there? Maybe some mods you guys recommend (Cyanogen, etc) that really make this thing shine?
Thanks,
T.J.

depending on the Widgets used. The ones that always update can use a lot of the battery. Tbh though it all depends on what you do with your phone. In addition, searching the forums for what you want to do is the best way of figuring out how you want to pimp out your phone. Gl

That's great, but too late, I am already rooted on Froyo.
I don't have Froyo yet, I'm on an AT&T N1. I do have a question about trying these different ROMs: what are the chances I'm going to permanently brick my phone? I'd hate to just pay $530 for this thing and then somehow cause it to stop working.

Juice Defender is a great app that is available on the Android Marketplace and is guaranteed to at least double your battery life. If you choose to purchase the full version, you get some advanced features which can lead to even more battery power.

The guide includes the all-important step "Create a NANDROID backup" Should you run into major problems, thanks to your custom recovery, you'll be able to do a nand restore. But as long as you stay away from flashing radios on your phone you should be fine. A lot of people will tell you they aren't worth the risk, and the reward is often marginal, and I tend to agree

I will say that it's FAST though..

All of the current ROMS have *some* level of Blur. Since we cannot bypass the Moto Kernel, there are some levels of base code that just have to be there.
Tranquility, Apex, zapX, and Rubix 0.5 were all built on the 2.3.15 release and then removed as much of the blur components as they could and still have it function.
Fission & Rubix 1.0 built from a base that came out of the Droid2 SDK which appears to be very stock Android and therefore, they are a little more 'blur-less' than others. Which is both good and bad. Time is showing that some of the blur components have some nice functionality that people are missing when they go completely blur-less.

This is absolutely true and was the same for the D1 except it wasn't Blur, but you can't build AOSP for D1 either without using the extract-files.sh to pull all of the proprietary components that make the phone work.
It's a basic truth about phone firmware.

So far, I've had like maybe one or two glitches.... sometimes after a reboot the boot screen gets left on the lock screen, so you can still unlock your phone, but you have to guess where the sliders are.
another is that the calendar widget doesn't work.
Other then those two, the rom is FAST, stable, and battery life has been great. Worth it to me in my opinion... It's not an ASOP "experience" though... it's more like a hybrid.
Like it so far though, it's my daily driver.
Edit: Also, this applies to STOCK people (running the 2.2 OTA).... I was odexed, completely stock..... installed this rom with ease: no wiping, no formatting, nada. AND it deodexed my phone for me.... LOVE THAT.

I have bought tasker aS well (the stock rom doesn't let the os sleep when gps is enabled so I bought it to turn it on and off for all my apps)
Now I like your idea of syncing every 30 but I use google voice exclusively. And the voice app. Does that mean if I turn off my sync I won't get my messages in a timely mater?

This rom also doesn't seem to sleep when wick is on. Am I missing something? Anyway I do see how this can save a lot a battery with the screen dining and everything. I had to wipe my phone to get it to work. Last time I tried when I booted every system app was force closing. I feel like this is a little slower than rubix but way faster then stock. Could be too the drawer just doesn't feel right. Too bouncy for me to use quickly. Ill probably go to pro launcher. But if I don't want to how do I customize the 4 apps at the bottom? Its driving me nuts

[Q] First flash to new ROM from stock: n00b questionss

Hello everyone, first post I'm an android noob, I love gadgets and cell phones, but am not computer savvy. I am almost ready to flash my first ROM onto my captivate, which is currently running android 2.1 update 1, OCLF v2.2+ Donate Version, autokiller, autostarts, and has touchwiz and Launcher Pro Plus (launcher pro is the default skin), but before I flash to a new ROM, I want to make sure I'm doing everything right to minimize the possibility of bricking my captivate. I think that is all the relevant information but let me know if there is anything else I should mention... I LOVE LOVE LOVE my captivate and I'm a teacher with more debt than income so I would really be quite sad if it bricks.
OK here's the rundown!
Clockwork Recovery
I don't really understand the different versions of Clockwork Recovery, but I know that I have *some* form/version of it on my captivate. I rooted using RyanZA's OCLF (MAJOR props to him; his app made me me fall in love with my phone/android in general) which I *think* made me get Clockwork Recovery, or maybe it was busybox. About a month ago I downloaded Titanium Backup, which I also *think* made me download Clockwork Recovery. Then I deleted TB about an hour later because at the time I didn't have any use for it (although I guess perhaps now I should get it back). Most recently I downloaded the "pro" or "full" or something version of ROM Manager (what a great app, I'm surprised something so essential isn't already part of android. I forked out the 5 bucks because, like RyanZA, the dev deserves the props if you can afford it, but nothing other than "free stuff" appears in the "download ROM" section, which sounded super convenient, and was supposed to come with the paid version... anyone know why this might be?), and I know for sure that I installed/downloaded/? Clockwork onto my phone through the ROM manager because I just did it like two days ago. --> OK I Just went into ROM Manager to look at it again and it says "current recovery: Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyway the reason I'm asking about this is because I remember reading a couple of different articles that said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone and you will never be happy and nobody will ever love you." However I might be thinking about busybox? which brings me to:
Busybox
To be honest I never even really understood what exactly busybox is but I think I read somewhere that, like clockwork, it said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone." I do not know if I have it on my phone or not, much less what version.

So I am going to undo the lagfix, but not undo the root that came with the OCLF app that came with the app because I need it to stay rooted. Is this a problem? I switched the scheduler back to "cfq" because that was what it used to be, but I used "deadline" before I started planning the ROM flash. Fun fact: I have no clue what any of that means, but boy did it make things speedy
Which ROM?
I know this has been asked before and I know it comes down to preference, but given the information about the current state of my phone, is there a particular ROM that you would suggest? If that doesn't make sense, what I mean to say is, does anyone know if, for example, people who have at any point used a lag fix are predisposed to bricking their phone during a flash, or if people who run Clockwork Recovery can't use ROM x?
The biggest things that concern me are 1. stability 2. that the ROM is still supported 3. froyo 4. easy sync/integration with everything google (mail, maps, calendar, etc). I like a clean, elegant look and feel, but I imagine I can skin whatever ROM to my liking. I am leaning towards Cognition, simply because I seem to read that one the most often.
Thank you for any help, it is greatly appreciated
Any other advice out there or links to good guides would be great too
oh hey sorry one more thing, as long as I'm asking noob questions: I know that live wallpapers drain battery but I love the earth one with a black background, looks so damn good. Anyway does it drain the battery CONSTANTLY as long as it's the wallpaper or only when you're on the home screens and can actually see it?
thanks again guys!
Hello everyone, first post I'm an android noob, I love gadgets and cell phones, but am not computer savvy.

Welcome! As has been said, come on in, the water's fine!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE my captivate and I'm a teacher with more debt than income so I would really be quite sad if it bricks.

Don't be afraid of your phone. Just don't be stupid about it. READ EVERYTHING.

ClockworkMod comes to you via Rom Manager. The reason you don't see the list of downloadable roms is.... they ain't none for that list. There are a few Roms, but they are not subscribed (or whatever) to that service. You gotta get 'em here from their respective threads in xda.

Tibu will give you the option to download and install the latest busybox. It'll give you a button at the bottom that says Problems? That button will put the latest on your phone.

You'll need the root actually to get anywhere at first so yeah, disable the lagfix but leave the root.

Try them all! They all have their plus and minus. I like cognition, but I've tried Deviant and CDE too. Only way to know what ya like best is take a bite of each.

Make sure you can do the 3 button thing to get into recovery or download modes. As far as I know that's the only way you can really 'brick" your phone. Some cappy's can't do any 3 button combos from power off. This is bad as you can't get out of the loop into recovery. DesignGears has a post about this, with a fix if you have this issue. Find it, Read it, Know it. And stuff.
Get the androidSDK and learn about abd. Sometimes this can get you out of trouble when nothing else can. There are tons of references to it in xda and google will get you a ton of reading material. Beyond a single post in scope to explain that one. Here's a start: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
Familiarize yourself with Odin and Odin One-Click. Not sure where to point you there as I found my info slogging through the cognition beast...err... thread. Pretty sure you can find a couple threads by DesignGears in development that will get you the programs and get you started.

I dunno that!
OK, well first off, thanks Sulphur. Bummer I can't use ROM Manager to download new ROMs, that would make things even easier.

Damn it's a good thing you said that. I just tried it to make sure that I could go into recovery mode... I always assumed that I could...
I seem to be one of those people that can't go into recovery mode using the three button press method. What's worse is that I have a mac so I (think) I can't use odin either.
Does this mean I can't fix my phone is it soft bricks while flashing? I can't take that risk...
*sniff*
people say cognition is so cool too...
Go on the development section. There is a fix for the there button issue and cog roms keep it intact
Sent telepathically using vulcan mind meld app.

Dang. That sucks. Did you look for DesignGears thread on the 3 button issue? There's another one another guy posted but I don't remember who.
No Odin is bad yeah, if you soft brick. You can look at Heimdale (link to it on the Cognition DL page here). But it sounds fairly complicated. Might be fun just to figure it out and seein' as you're on mac it may be your only option. No idea where to send you to learn how to use it tho, just know that it can be used on a Mac.
Good luck to ya!

Based on what I read, it seems like I need odin to apply the fix though, right? Thanks though!

Thanks for pointing that out! It's WAY beyond my modest computer knowledge (I was using Terminal and typing in Unix commands, I'm sure it was all totally amateur, but I felt like such a computer bad-ass ), but now I actually have an option, where before I had none! Thanks!!
