Once you get the case, can you comment on how much bulk it adds? I've been seeing that case everywhere, but I'm concerned it'll pretty much negate the N7's slimness...

I JUST read that the nexus 7 does not have usb on the go aka USB HOST.

The case you got seems to be the cheapest alternative for us Canadians. I've seen a few for Americans (through Amazon) that are less than $10. Sucks that we can get owned North of the border most of the time...

Otg adapter

Hi, Ive read the other otg adapter pages but i dont believe any of them have the answer tmy question. Im not interested in hooking up keyboards,etc to the 7 I just want to hook up a thumb drive to it so I can watch movies on long trips. All the cables people have mentioned have a couple of inches of cable attached to them between the connectors, This plus having a thumb drive sticking out of it kind of makes it annoying to use. What i am hoping was if someone could point me in the direction of something like this http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Micro-...1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1347344592&sr=1 for the nexus. Id really like to not have the extra cord. thanx guys

I think having a wire sort of thing is much more convenient coz it wont protrude much when connected to a usb stick!

Thats true but you can buy those many thumbdrives that are 1/2 inch long which is what i plan on using on it. thanx for the diffrent ideas!

I agree 100%, and I have both and actually prefer the version with the wire for the reason you give, HOWEVER ... the OP asked for a connector without a wire, and gave a specific example of the type they were looking for. The one in my link matches that perfectly.

When I use mine with a thumb drive, I just transfer the files to the tablet. Takes 5 minutes and uses a lot less battery than having it connected to usb and reading the card the whole time. Just leave a few GB available for movies; delete one if you need more space to transfer another.

Get a cheap one from amazon and use an app called stickmount to Mount your thumb drive to your nexus. I watched a blueray movie with no lag or stutter.

Question do I have to use a thumb drive ? Could I use a micro SD card reader and a micro SD card and it be the same thing ?

You could. I found several reviews on the super small micro sd readers that say they crap out in a year or less, so I just went with a thumbdrive. Doesn't hurt to try if the price is right.

Gauntlet Patriot Node

Hey people!
I have a Nexus 10 and I just ordered a Nexus 4, but the only thing that had been putting me off of it is the 16gb storage limit. I want to use my phone as an mp3 player and I want to use it in the metro, so no internet streaming possibilities.
I've been looking for solutions for a while and I found one, and since the N10 has a limited storage as well, I figured I'd share it
I bought a Gauntlet Patriot Node last week and received it today. (Note: I'm not affiliated with them in any way ) and I was wondering if I could use it as an extension to my tablet's storage. Basically, it's a hard drive enclosure that converts a 2.5'' drive into a battery-powered wi-fi hard drive.
Long story short, yes.
The app it comes with is pretty average, it lets you look at the files and everything, but it doesn't allow you to create playlists/listen to songs one at a time, so if you want to listen to music, you have to pick an individual song and then pick another one once it's done.
However, I ended up setting up ES File Explorer's LAN capabilities to use it with the node. I can now explore the node folders with it. Furthermore, ES' music player works great, and I can easily select one folder and make ES play it all, shuffle the stuff, etc.
Now, I know it's not the best solution ever and it's quite pricey, but I know the limited storage has been quite a pain for me, and I am probably not the only one. Such a device makes it really easy to expand storage and to move around with said expanded storage.
I also know I haven't been able to find much information when I looked for it, so I'd be glad to help anyone who has some!

It's quite a small device, I'm guessing it's around the size of a 5'' phone, but it's around an inch thick.
The device cost me 95$ on Newegg.ca, and I got a 320 WD hard drive with it for 50 bucks.
Seagate has a mobile wifi hard drive as well, but it's priced at 200$, and some other brands do them as well but they're quite expensive. The node seemed like the cheapest way to me.

I'm looking at the Ravpower, I hadn't seen it. Though as far as I can see, it takes SD cards as memory?
I'll be posting more as I get more use out of my node, I only got it today, so I obviously am still in the honeymoon phase. I should be receiving my nexus 4 tomorrow, so I'll be able to take it for a ride as well (though I'm scared of leaving the house with the n4 without a cover, which should be delivered on the 18th...)
I'm really fond of the fact I can put a hard drive of up to 2tb in the device though. Obviously, I'll never use that much, but it's a great idea.
My main gripe with it is that it can't connect to a hidden wi-fi, so I can't connect to our home's through it. Not that big of a deal though, as I mean to use it as an extension on the road anyways.

It's smaller as well, so I'm sure to many it would be more practical. Also, the ability to use an SD card or a flash drive is great, I can already see the music jump because my hard drive bounced in my bag.
Oh well, nothing's perfect :victory:
By the way, it took me a long time to figure out how to set my drive to work the way I wanted it to, and I just realized that while looking online, the article that gave me the idea to try ES file explorer came from you, I had read your thread without realizing it. So thanks for that

I have not used it out yet, my brother didn't wake up when the UPS dude came home, so I won't be getting my N4 before tomorrow. Since my galaxy W has an SD card, I am still using it, so I can't confirm the battery time, nor how different parameters (connecting to wifi through it, for example) affect it. The specs sheet says 5.5 hours, however, and the cables are quite easy to carry around.

I've played with it a bit more today, and it is really slow if you want to play with the files on it via the wifi. However, with an usb 3.0 cable, it's as fast as you'd expect.

I just purchased the Seagate Wireless Plus from Best Buy for $199.99 (seems to be the same price on Amazon, B&H or wherever you buy it). It's USB 3.0, just a little bigger than the typical portable, and has a 1TB SATA drive. It sets up its own wifi hotspot that you can connect to with any wifi-enabled device (Android, IOS, Windows, Mac). There's a downloadable app for Android and IOS to access the drive, and Windows and Mac use a browser. It's capable of multi-user streaming--3 users can stream their own movies at the same time. It claims up to 10 hours battery life, but, of course, that depends on what it's being used for, and how many people are using it at once. I've only tested it very briefly, but I was able to connect a Nexus 4, Nexus 10, Transformer Infinity, Surface RT, Windows 8 desktop and Windows 8 laptop. It worked well over a distance of about 25-30 feet (it may have a greater range, but I didn't test it for maximum range)
Edit: it has a pass-through so that you can connect to the drive and the internet at the same time.

Is it at all possible to connect to it through the likes of ES file explorer as it appears can be done with the node, or does it HAVE to be via their own app? The seagate plus does tempt me but the deal breaker is it's inability to stream most of the mainstream video formats. Without the ablity to stream them, and being forced to copy them across to the device, the seagate plus is useless to me.
I am once again tempted by the node, battery life is not too important to me, as i don't take it outside with me that much and tend to have a wall plug available, but i like the notion of using it with ES.
The ravpower holds no interest to me. If it had a harddrive built into the thing it would, but i want just a single box that does it all, SD and flash card is irrelevent to me as well seeing as i have an OTG cable.

The Ravpower is actually a very sensible option. It's cheaper and it holds flash data. If you're on a trip, every time the hard drive will bounce, so will the data on the screen. It's also much smaller.
It's a matter of portability VS capacity

An otg cable is attatched by a cable, hence the name, and i do not really like even having my otg cable hanging off the tablet due to potential damage to the por. The node or seagate are wireless. Very different things. It also means that the tablet itself is powering the harddrive, and while i do not know any figures, i assume that powering a harddrive uses more battery than streaming something over wifi. I could be wrong on that. Furthermore a portable harddrive cannot easily be connected to two or more devices on different sides of the room at the same time.

If i were to use the ravpower it would not be with a flash drive. I already have a 32gb flashdrive that can plug into my tablet. If i were to use the ravpower it would be for a 1tb harddrive, in which case i would still experience this "bounce", although i've never in the past experienced this bounce when using a mechanical disk. any travelling i do that would see me using my tablet is on a motorway, or a trainline. There is no bumping around. Plus the ravpower is not much smaller once you have a portable harddrive attached. Then you have two devices that might have to be kept in bay by say rubber banding them together, and you also have a cable from the harddrive to keep at bay. The node or seagate is a simple box. Nothing more. I want things kept simple and clean.
The only appeal the ravpower might hold is as a battery pack, but it is not a significant selling point for me in my situation.
Very simply put, the ravpower does nothing for me, what i want is simply a single box that does it all over wifi.

Then it's between the Gauntlet (either the node or the one with a drive in it) and the Seagate... Though I hear Corsair is coming with something very good. I believe WD launched a wifi unit recently too. It's still a very early technology and is far from optimal, but as it develops, I'm sure we'll get some amazing results in the next years.

The Seagate will stream whatever video formats you put on it; it's basically just a regular NTFS hard drive. The only limitation as to formats rests entirely on the device you're streaming to. If, for example, you're streaming a .mov file to a device that does not natively support .mov, then it won't play, at least not without a third-party app.

Hmm. I have just read a lot of controversial stuff about the wireless plus and the goflex satelite
"The app on both iOS and Android look virtually identical. It features media players for Mp4 movies and music files. As long as you have your files in this format, things are golden. Fighting me tooth and nail, the player would not run my .avi, divx ot .mkv files."
so this inability to play avi files is due to the nexus not being able to natively play avi files and not the seagate device itself? I have close to 2000 films backed up as 700mb avi's, hence why i'm still looking around for something that suits my needs.

It plays .avi and mkv files on the Nexus 10 with no problem. Just load them onto the drive from your computer, log on to the Seagate wifi hotspot and then access the movies using the Seagate app. As far as I know, the app does nothing more than access whatever is on the drive and streams it to your device; after that, it's up to the device's capabilities..

[Q] For those of you with the Z3 Compact already...

I am considering getting this phone to upgrade from my Galaxy S II, but I have a couple of questions.
The button placement: it looks like the power and volume buttons are right in the middle of the phone. That's exactly where my car mount is going to be gripping the phone. Is that going to be a problem? Same with the magnetic charging port. What do you use to mount this in your car?
Does this have proper file transfer support? It takes about 20 minutes to tranfser a 1gb file to my nexus7 over USB while it takes seconds on my Galaxy S. I've read this is because Google doesn't pay Microsoft for the patent to do this properly while Samsung does. What does Sony do? Is there proper file transfer support over USB like Samsung or is it going to be painfully slow like on the nexus?

For your mount question, I'd suggest getting a car mount specifically made for the Z3C as soon as one is made. Haicom makes great model-specific mounts, I have a Haicom bike mount for my phone and it has a good and sturdy fit. Much much better than any of those universal mounts.

For the file xfer question, I think android moved to MTP only at some point - it may have been with ICS. What version of android is on your GSII?
In my experience MTP has been much slower when compared to native file system browsing - especially when transferring many small files.

Also for the mount, I have one of these and personally I would never go back to phone specific mounts. I have been using this for the past 2 or 3 years and have it mounted to my dash using an adhesive mount that I rigged to mate up with this one. I can't speak for the suction cup, but the grip itself is VERY strong and I have never had a phone even come close to trying to jump out of this thing. I currently mount my N5 in it in landscape mode and offset from center. I don't have my Z3C yet (monday) but I do not expect to have any issues mounting it in this mount.

Btw, pro-tip...this mount can be very hard to open one-handed. For my N4 and the phone before that I stuck a dime inside the mount to keep it wedged open. When I got my N5 I upgraded the spacer coin to a nickel. With this cheap mod you can easily insert and remove your phone with one hand and the grip on your phone is still more than adequate, as I mentioned above.

You can use a mount, although it needs to be offset quite a way to avoid clashing with buttons, I have the deff magnetic charger, and it just doesn't stay on the port :/
Great for at home with the phone lying flat, but when the phone is mounted horizontally it doesn't reliably stay on so I'm looking for another magnetic charge option, or I'll have to bite the bullet and just use micro usb. You have the deff micro usb adapter? I just got two and they seem very strong. One of them can lift my sim cutter by itself which is 158 grams. I was really hoping to use one in the car and it seems like it should be more than strong enough to stick.

My point is that this mount is so good that I have no desire to go back to phone specific mounts. I upgrade my phone at least once a year. Buying a mount for ONE phone that I have to replace when I upgrade is crazy IMO. Not to mention that I am very particular about mounts, don't like window mounts, don't like vent mounts, so options for phone specific mounts that I would actually consider are few and far between.

You have the deff micro usb adapter? I just got two and they seem very strong. One of them can lift my sim cutter by itself which is 158 grams. I was really hoping to use one in the car and it seems like it should be more than strong enough to stick.

It's not the strength, its the fact that it's attached to a relatively stiff cable, and the thing when not placed flat tends to try and tilt to one side or the other so it falls off very easily from the upside down position.

So if I do hold it offset to avoid the power button, I'll have to grip it nearer the top to avoid the camera button, but that's where the micro USB port is, so how is that going to work? I have an older version of the Exomount and don't really want to buy anything phone specific since I've been through Nokia, Samsung, BlackBerry and now possibly Sony in the past few years.
Could anyone provide a photo of their z3c looks like intheir car mount?
As for the file transfer, the stock ROM on 4.1 still supported the faster file transfer on the Galaxy SII. I'm on cyanogen mod with android 4.3 and it only does MTP. I have to take the SD card out every time or wait an hour to transfer the files. Which isn't as bad as the nexus with no removable memory, but still stupidly annoying. So you're saying Sony only supports MTP? Do you guys have the z3c or one of the recent z-series phones?

Every device which comes with 4.1 or later on release will only have MTP. Mass storage is dead - Google killed it.

I have the deff micro usb adapter as well, and it's definitely a huge exercise in patience and delicacy when trying to get it to stick, even on a flat surface lol. Perhaps you got lucky with one of the good ones? Or can anyone else that has one also chime in with their experience?

Gotcha. My cable in the car is very thin and pliable so hopefully that means I wont have that problem.

I'll take a pic when I get mine on monday if no one else has by then and let you know of any problems I have noticed. I have the u grip which holds the phone similarly to the exomount.

That's interesting, I'd actually consider buying that, except I don't know how I'd be able to keep my phone charged, as it doesn't appear to have a magnetic charging point and the usb port is on the long side under a cover on the Z3c

When you say every device, which devices/manufacturers do you mean?
My Xperia T is on 4.1.2 and does have Mass Storage option (for the micro-sd card memory only). Cannot remember if this was present in the 4.3 update as I am back on 4.1

I also have a T - it was my previous phone. If you remember the phone was released with 4.0.3. This is why Sony kept the backward compatibility with this when they updated to 4.1.

Do you mean that the Z3c doesn't have a magnetic charging point?
If that's what you mean: luckily you are wrong, I'll get my z3c with the headphones (like many others) and a magnetic charging dock.

Actually if you look at the last pic for this stereo on Crutchfield.com you will see that it does have the magnetic charging points built in. Even so, $200 for what amounts to a phone dock is very expensive.

The car stereo charges your xperia using built in magnetic charging connector. It works like a charm! All xperia devices are supported except for Z ultra due to its size and original Z. But the audio quality over bluetooth is amazing! It got built in clearaudio + and DSEE. I paired it with inifinity speakers and JL audio amplifier.

sorry for going OT, does the mic on your T work well? or does the other side find it hard to hear?

Charging + USB OTG

I'm planning a trip this November and seeing how I'm not going to have internet connection on the plane is it possible to charge my nexus 6/9 WHILE using a external hdd over usb otg? Or at the very least provide enough power to keep it from dying on me even if it doesn't charge it?

I think you'd need a custom kernel to allow that. I don't know if any have this feature built in.

What airlines are you taking that doesn't have internet? You could bring a 10000 mAh charger pack with you but I know of no way to chain them together with a USB extension. Worst case, you'll have to read or otherwise occupy yourself like we did for the ten thousand years of human society before the cell phone was invented. [emoji6]

There will be internet, but I'm not sure I'm willing to pay for it since it's most likely going to be slow internet to be honest. And Delta/United are the two I'm looking at to go to Cali.
I couldn't get a small usb hub and have it work that way? I'm assuming no because it won't receive enough power. My whole goal is to download some of my most listened to google music stuff to the external hard drive since I've not actually stored a single song since I bought google music along with movies, etc.
You just reminded me of the 10k mAH battery pack, wonder if droid-life has some deals on one again.

why not just download all the music you want to bring with you to your phone? even 10 gigabytes is a lot of music. unless you're really pushing your storage capacity already

I only have the 32gb N6 , and between roms, etc I'm hurting for space. And I really should just get this out of the way since it's only going to get worse in the future and yeah.

No its blocked at kernel level. You can't even qi charge whilst USB is in use.

What's the actual reasoning behind blocking that at the kernel level though.

hate to bump this old thread... but are there currently any kernels that support Charging + OTG?

I'm also looking for any info re: OTG + Charging on the Nexus 6
I'm trying to move away from my Nexus 7 based car installation to using my Nexus 6 for navigation & music, but as it currently stands I can either charge my phone or use my DAC which is less than ideal on long journeys.
Is OTG + charging hard to implement? After using the Nexus 7 I thought it would be a fairly common kernel mod which lots of people would make use of given the rise in use of USB peripherals such as DACs & hard drives etc

Bump number 2. I have scowered the internet and XDA. I can't find a kernel anywhere that supports OTG+charging. A couple of websites say elementalx does, but alas it is not an option in the elementalx kernel manager. Guessing it was only an option for the 7, and the websites just copied it. Anyone else find something?

Bump, again. This would help repurpose a lot of old phones I have lying around. Aside from the Timur kernel circa 2021 for the nexus 7 (the dawn of DIY car screens), I have not found anything. And those ROMs are ancient...
