[Q] For those of you with the Z3 Compact already... - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am considering getting this phone to upgrade from my Galaxy S II, but I have a couple of questions.
The button placement: it looks like the power and volume buttons are right in the middle of the phone. That's exactly where my car mount is going to be gripping the phone. Is that going to be a problem? Same with the magnetic charging port. What do you use to mount this in your car?
Does this have proper file transfer support? It takes about 20 minutes to tranfser a 1gb file to my nexus7 over USB while it takes seconds on my Galaxy S. I've read this is because Google doesn't pay Microsoft for the patent to do this properly while Samsung does. What does Sony do? Is there proper file transfer support over USB like Samsung or is it going to be painfully slow like on the nexus?

For your mount question, I'd suggest getting a car mount specifically made for the Z3C as soon as one is made. Haicom makes great model-specific mounts, I have a Haicom bike mount for my phone and it has a good and sturdy fit. Much much better than any of those universal mounts.

For the file xfer question, I think android moved to MTP only at some point - it may have been with ICS. What version of android is on your GSII?
In my experience MTP has been much slower when compared to native file system browsing - especially when transferring many small files.

Also for the mount, I have one of these and personally I would never go back to phone specific mounts. I have been using this for the past 2 or 3 years and have it mounted to my dash using an adhesive mount that I rigged to mate up with this one. I can't speak for the suction cup, but the grip itself is VERY strong and I have never had a phone even come close to trying to jump out of this thing. I currently mount my N5 in it in landscape mode and offset from center. I don't have my Z3C yet (monday) but I do not expect to have any issues mounting it in this mount.

Btw, pro-tip...this mount can be very hard to open one-handed. For my N4 and the phone before that I stuck a dime inside the mount to keep it wedged open. When I got my N5 I upgraded the spacer coin to a nickel. With this cheap mod you can easily insert and remove your phone with one hand and the grip on your phone is still more than adequate, as I mentioned above.

You can use a mount, although it needs to be offset quite a way to avoid clashing with buttons, I have the deff magnetic charger, and it just doesn't stay on the port :/
Great for at home with the phone lying flat, but when the phone is mounted horizontally it doesn't reliably stay on so I'm looking for another magnetic charge option, or I'll have to bite the bullet and just use micro usb. My mount is a http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenu-Airframe-Portable-Car-Mount-Black/dp/B00D901B4W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1411847564&sr=8-3&keywords=vent+car+mount

You have the deff micro usb adapter? I just got two and they seem very strong. One of them can lift my sim cutter by itself which is 158 grams. I was really hoping to use one in the car and it seems like it should be more than strong enough to stick.

My point is that this mount is so good that I have no desire to go back to phone specific mounts. I upgrade my phone at least once a year. Buying a mount for ONE phone that I have to replace when I upgrade is crazy IMO. Not to mention that I am very particular about mounts, don't like window mounts, don't like vent mounts, so options for phone specific mounts that I would actually consider are few and far between.

It's not the strength, its the fact that it's attached to a relatively stiff cable, and the thing when not placed flat tends to try and tilt to one side or the other so it falls off very easily from the upside down position.

So if I do hold it offset to avoid the power button, I'll have to grip it nearer the top to avoid the camera button, but that's where the micro USB port is, so how is that going to work? I have an older version of the Exomount and don't really want to buy anything phone specific since I've been through Nokia, Samsung, BlackBerry and now possibly Sony in the past few years.
Could anyone provide a photo of their z3c looks like intheir car mount?
As for the file transfer, the stock ROM on 4.1 still supported the faster file transfer on the Galaxy SII. I'm on cyanogen mod with android 4.3 and it only does MTP. I have to take the SD card out every time or wait an hour to transfer the files. Which isn't as bad as the nexus with no removable memory, but still stupidly annoying. So you're saying Sony only supports MTP? Do you guys have the z3c or one of the recent z-series phones?

Every device which comes with 4.1 or later on release will only have MTP. Mass storage is dead - Google killed it.

I have the deff micro usb adapter as well, and it's definitely a huge exercise in patience and delicacy when trying to get it to stick, even on a flat surface lol. Perhaps you got lucky with one of the good ones? Or can anyone else that has one also chime in with their experience?

That's interesting, I'd actually consider buying that, except I don't know how I'd be able to keep my phone charged, as it doesn't appear to have a magnetic charging point and the usb port is on the long side under a cover on the Z3c

When you say every device, which devices/manufacturers do you mean?
My Xperia T is on 4.1.2 and does have Mass Storage option (for the micro-sd card memory only). Cannot remember if this was present in the 4.3 update as I am back on 4.1

I also have a T - it was my previous phone. If you remember the phone was released with 4.0.3. This is why Sony kept the backward compatibility with this when they updated to 4.1.

If that's what you mean: luckily you are wrong, I'll get my z3c with the headphones (like many others) and a magnetic charging dock.

Actually if you look at the last pic for this stereo on Crutchfield.com you will see that it does have the magnetic charging points built in. Even so, $200 for what amounts to a phone dock is very expensive.

The car stereo charges your xperia using built in magnetic charging connector. It works like a charm! All xperia devices are supported except for Z ultra due to its size and original Z. But the audio quality over bluetooth is amazing! It got built in clearaudio + and DSEE. I paired it with inifinity speakers and JL audio amplifier.

Seems like a decent price, even though the device could use a better screen, bluetooth, and hdmi out. I grabbed a rain check while I think about a possible new toy...
Saw this on Engadget yesterday. The thing doesn't do portrait mode, doesn't have an accelerometer, and almost all signs point to the touch screen being resistive rather than capacitive. Still, for $150 I could slap some velcro on the back and on my cabinets and use it to follow recipes when cooking.

Huh. I spoke with tech support yesterday and they said it didn't support portrait. But we were also talking about the lack of an accelerometer so they might have just meant it didn't automatically flip.
Well I talked to them again today, and I dont get the warm and fuzzy feeling about the answers, but here is what "Ari" had to say:
Ari: unit has options for a prtrait and mode
Ari: headphone jack should be 3.5mm
Ari: unit has a camera
Ari: it has a usb slot for file transfers
Ari: 800mgz for prcessors
Ari: it should be able to charge with the usb also
Ari: it should have a calibrate command also
Ari: and program similar for the android market
Ari: it is using an android 2.1 program
Ari: i apologize this is just a new device and not all program alternatives and specifications has not fully been established
Ari: it is supposed to be out end of the week
Ari: and by august

They're just reselling the hardware I'm guessing. No way a Florida company could make this cheaper than China can.
over all i like the device. im used to a resistive screen so thats not a problem. doesnt appear to have the auto rotate screen but waiting to hear back from them to find out what the deal is. the manual talks about auto rotating the screen so it should have it. lack of bluetooth is another draw back but i really dont need it. they also have a 2.5mm headphone jack on them instead of a 3.5 like normal but they are addressing that with an adapter i do believe.
power consumption wasnt too bad. i was using the device for 5 hours yesterday and only used a 1/4 reserve from what it said. so i was only down to around 72% charge after playing with it for 5 hours. was reasonably bright enough in a brightly lit room. the angle one can see is pretty good as well.
the microsd card slot isnt in line properly. so if you insert a card you will want to put a price of tape on the end of it so when you release it you can pull it out. i played hell getting the thing to pull out and it was dragging the top of the card so had to use a pair of tweezers to pull it out.
cant access the market yet so havent tried the nook or kindle apps but that will be my next thing. looking at pictures was good. just as good as my digi pic frame.
over all for what i bought it for i do believe it will work a treat. i was going to buy a chumby either the bb or the sony branded chumby and this will work so much better then either of those two devices.
mistakes happen. how do people forget to take thier vitamins in the morning? how do people forget there coffee mug on the roof of thier car?

Well, that's good to hear. Really all I'd ever want one for is reading in bed, surfing the web while on the couch and most importantly, following recipes online without having to print them. Velcro that thing to the cabinet and we're golden.
Can you post some pics of the device from different angles? I'm curious how thick it is and where the ports are.
Seems my local store has a few in stock here, so I'm swinging by on my way home to grab one. Ill report back what I can about the device later tonight or tomorrow morning. Supposed firmware update released tomorrow.

I would love something like this that would hold it in landscape format.
I picked up one of these Ram mounts to use with my Nook Color a little while back. It's OK, but I'm not crazy about it.
I'd really like to find something custom fitted for the N7. Pogo charging pins would be great too. Hopefully Google and/or Asus come out with a full range of docking options.

Learned years ago from my Palm Pre, and re-inforced by my Thunderbolt, that running GPS and Pandora over bluetooth while charging in the car caused the device to get too hot and shut down. Windshield mounts are a no no for this reason (let alone of 7" tablet up there).
The CD slot mount is a good idea, will be interested to see if it (or another one) will hold the tablet.

Yeah, I've done that with my old DX and my GNex, and they never shut down. This is in Cleveland, and at least one time I remember it was in mid-90 degree temps.
As to the OP, if we can get a car dock with POGO pins (since we apparently can't get one that doesn't require a crapload of sanding for the Verizon GNex), that would be awesome. Pop that in the dock, enable wifi-tethering, and you're good to go. And the larger screen would be great in a car.

I'm really hoping there's a car dock that takes advantage of the pogo pins as well. I'm not going to really get my hopes up but it would be awesome. I've looked into the Ram Mount X-Grip for tablets along with various mounting parts but something that was all in one that charged it would be ideal. Maybe the Nexus 7 will be popular enough for a third party to make one specific for it, maybe proclip will do it.
Yup - not a fan of anything "Suction Mount" ... I've had them give out and fall down while driving, and can be a real pain / hazard. Cup-holder arms, vent mounts, or even a good CD mount.. sounds great to me.. a nice all-in-one snap in place w/ pins would be ideal.
This one is a bit more expensive but looks well made.

Only thing holding me back from getting a n7 is no keyboard dock (not bluetooth keyboard) and no microsd slot forcing me to buy the 16gb version which is still not enough. I know there is a workaround for the storage issue with otg but I would like a keyboard dock.
Ideally if there was a keyboard dock that has an sd card slot id buy it in a heartbeat.

LOL... You purchased it a day after saying the lack of a keyboard dock is holding you back.
I've searched everywhere I know of in hopes of finding a Keyboard/Dock for the N7, but there is not one sadly..
I think it would be a little hard to work with the 1 input options (the microUSB) when building a dock.
Specially since its positions on the bottom of the tablet (portrait style)
I'm currently waiting for another OTG Cable to arrive.. I'm then going to rip apart my wifes Tab2 7.0 keyboard, and see what I can do about wiring in the OTG cable, replacing the docks current Samsung Connector with the mUSB on the OTG cable. Won't be a microSD option, but I'll have a keyboard dock (hopefully)

You could use something like this USB Keyboard fitted in a PU Leather Case, complete with adapter.

I'd advise seriously against that. I bought it, and in addition to being rather huge, the keyboard gets more awful with use. It's not even the size -- it just doesn't register keypresses sometimes.

the product Nexus 7 Keyboard Cover – Nexus 7 Bluetooth Keyboard Leatherette Folio Case from u Play (White Label) $49.99 is good and useful for the people who work with time management.
I'm using a Microsoft wireless keyboard (Model 2000) and it works perfectly, even at faster speeds (70 WPM). I just plug the wireless receiver into my OTG cable and it automatically starts using the hardware. Though this doesn't work if you want a smaller portable keyboard as this one is full sized, but I use it at home mostly so that's not a problem (I prefer having a full sized keyboard). These special keys even work: Mail (brings up Gmail), volume controls, pause/play, home, and some others that I can't remember.

Just picked up hip street with keyboard yesterday, was looking for something thick for protection more than anything! The case is heavy, bulky and the keys are cluncky. That being said it connects very well with Bluetooth and all ports and speaker are open/ accessible. Haven't tested to see how long battery for keyboard lasts ( charges thru USB ) overall I'm happy with this purchase.

Definitely thought of pogo pins too, but I thought I heard that they're only for charging.

I use an apple bluetooth keyboard and a blurex case to prop my n7 at the right angle.. I've found no disadvantage to this and my N7 anctually fits right in the gap under the keyboard so I can wedge it in between books and what not. It seems to be the best route right now.

Otg adapter

Hi, Ive read the other otg adapter pages but i dont believe any of them have the answer tmy question. Im not interested in hooking up keyboards, etc to the 7 I just want to hook up a thumb drive to it so I can watch movies on long trips. All the cables people have mentioned have a couple of inches of cable attached to them between the connectors, This plus having a thumb drive sticking out of it kind of makes it annoying to use. What i am hoping was if someone could point me in the direction of something like this http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-Micro-...1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1347344592&sr=1 for the nexus. Id really like to not have the extra cord. thanx guys
This one? (works on my N7 fine)

I think having a wire sort of thing is much more convenient coz it wont protrude much when connected to a usb stick!
Thats true but you can buy those many thumbdrives that are 1/2 inch long which is what i plan on using on it. thanx for the diffrent ideas!

I agree 100%, and I have both and actually prefer the version with the wire for the reason you give, HOWEVER ... the OP asked for a connector without a wire, and gave a specific example of the type they were looking for. The one in my link matches that perfectly.
When I use mine with a thumb drive, I just transfer the files to the tablet. Takes 5 minutes and uses a lot less battery than having it connected to usb and reading the card the whole time. Just leave a few GB available for movies; delete one if you need more space to transfer another.
Didn't test this one but its cheap:

I am using these two successfully on my N7. Makes for a total length of exactly 2 inches.

Get a cheap one from amazon and use an app called stickmount to Mount your thumb drive to your nexus. I watched a blueray movie with no lag or stutter.

Question do I have to use a thumb drive ? Could I use a micro SD card reader and a micro SD card and it be the same thing ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
You could. I found several reviews on the super small micro sd readers that say they crap out in a year or less, so I just went with a thumbdrive. Doesn't hurt to try if the price is right.

android car audio recommendations?

hey looking at putting an android based car stereo in my new yaris
it can fit a 2 din radio and has steering wheel controls and a remote usb port / aux
i've been looking at the parrot asteroid as that can be rooted and tinkered with and doesnt require the always on usb connection (not to mention the rear-view camera connections are nice)
would like recommendations on brands, models, etc.
my preferred criteria are usb and aux connections and bluetooth hand free for phone calls.
some kind of removable storage would be a plus but not essential.
built in phone independent nav is highly prefered (borderline must-have)

well the fact that that one is not actually android just has android auto functionality (so it has to be plugged in via usb to work) and can NOT be updated by the end user is a major turn off
i have been looking at Parrot's Asteroid Smart which is full android just reskinned and can be rooted for sideloading various apps like google maps; though i dont know where development is currently at for it's stock OS (but if i can root it that's less of an issue as i can just redo it for the most part myself)
i just installed an XTRONS TD702A in my truck and have been very happy with it. its compatible with malaysk rom and flashing was as easy as running a system update on a sd card. the price was cheap and it shipped in a couple of days.

The way Pumpkin has implemented Parrot BT it's as bad as the older units. The main screen is hard coded, you can't change any icons or
the way it look. No improvement the way I see it.

ya im a little warry on that one, as from the pics it looks like they cannibalized the entire frame from another companies DOA smart radio and just tried to fit their guts into it ( second picture bottom right; holes dont line up and the mounting screw hole for the radio connector is not even in because of the mis-alignment)
cost is less of an issue than making sure it works and i can do what i need to with it; for reference the parrot asteroid retails (depending on form where) from $429 to $729 depending on if its a refurb or used model
if thats the only option for my needs i can more than deal with that price in exchange for less headaches and/or more customization
also side-note: isn't it grand how xda DOESN'T auto subscribe you to threads that you create? didn't even know anyone else replied after the 8100nex recommendation till i remembered i made it and came to look....
to be honest i was a little curious about their mounting brackets but it didn't matter in my truck. i had to do such a custom fit job there was no need for mounting.

ya i'm not talking about the mounting bracket; i mean the mounting hole that secures the actual jack for the radio antenna itself if you look on the picture of the back you can see the jack's mounting hole that's meant to be secured to the inside of the radios shell....
anyway
anyone else have any suggestions?
i see what you mean. the hole on top is unused and the one for the radio worked fine.
ok so just had the time to go and actually measure the radio bay size and it is in fact not a 2 din but a 1.5 din bay
i'm guessing this severely limits my options?
edit: ok scratch that the moulding was just covering up the outer edge of the bay it is a 2 din looks like
so nvm
