Vehicle mount anywhere? - Nexus 7 Accessories

Hey guys,
I'm fantasizing about a car dock, preferably a vent holder, where I can snap my N7 on in the way to work. (Over an hour commute)
Wondering... is anything like this available or in production? Thanks!

Car Mount
I have a Mountek's CD Slot Mount, Universal Hands-Free Car Mount for Cell Phones & GPS Devices which holds my Galaxy Nexus with room to spare, I am hoping come Friday when my tablet arrives to test this out, if it holds up I will take some pictures and give a review.

I would love something like this that would hold it in landscape format.

I picked up one of these Ram mounts to use with my Nook Color a little while back. It's OK, but I'm not crazy about it.
I'd really like to find something custom fitted for the N7. Pogo charging pins would be great too. Hopefully Google and/or Asus come out with a full range of docking options.

How about this?

Learned years ago from my Palm Pre, and re-inforced by my Thunderbolt, that running GPS and Pandora over bluetooth while charging in the car caused the device to get too hot and shut down. Windshield mounts are a no no for this reason (let alone of 7" tablet up there).
The CD slot mount is a good idea, will be interested to see if it (or another one) will hold the tablet.

Yeah, I've done that with my old DX and my GNex, and they never shut down. This is in Cleveland, and at least one time I remember it was in mid-90 degree temps.
As to the OP, if we can get a car dock with POGO pins (since we apparently can't get one that doesn't require a crapload of sanding for the Verizon GNex), that would be awesome. Pop that in the dock, enable wifi-tethering, and you're good to go. And the larger screen would be great in a car.

I found this on ebay.

That CD mount looks interesting. Does that remove the capability of using a cd? Would the car think a cd is going in and try to pull it in ? D: That looks pretty awesome. I might get it.

I'm really hoping there's a car dock that takes advantage of the pogo pins as well. I'm not going to really get my hopes up but it would be awesome. I've looked into the Ram Mount X-Grip for tablets along with various mounting parts but something that was all in one that charged it would be ideal. Maybe the Nexus 7 will be popular enough for a third party to make one specific for it, maybe proclip will do it.

Yup - not a fan of anything "Suction Mount" ... I've had them give out and fall down while driving, and can be a real pain / hazard. Cup-holder arms, vent mounts, or even a good CD mount.. sounds great to me.. a nice all-in-one snap in place w/ pins would be ideal.

This one is a bit more expensive but looks well made.

I am usually weary about suction mounts but their phone mount is amazingly strong and has never failed on me.

For those of us with kids, the headrest mount looks like a nice solution for those long trips.

if anyone can find a cellphone/tablet mount post it here! I'd be interested since I frequently would want to mount my phone along with occasionally mounting the n7

New Nexus 7 Car Install pics+video

I decided a while ago to use my Nexus 7 as my head unit in my 2006 Legacy 3.0R. This is the result.
Audio is done via a Kenwood FM modulator, and bluetooth streaming to the pre-existing Parrot system as a backup.
In the near future I'm going to mount a 3G-wifi hotspot and Seagate Satellite wifi hard drive in the glove box for internet and media streaming.
Video and better pics coming later tonight

I really wanted to use the nexus 7 with my car install. But limited storage, and no usb otg/charge at same time. If that was possible it would be in my dash now.
Im going to use a galaxy tab 2 since it can take a 64gb sd. Really wish there was a solution.
But nice, clean install. Im adding mine to my Dodge Magnum.

Segate Goflex Satellite or the Kingston Wi-Drive will solve my storage issues. For now 16GB is enough for just music.
Id like to hear about your experience with that Seagate satellite. It would be nifty to stream that to tablet via wifi and tablet to Kenwood cd player via bluetooth. Talk about ultimate right there, mhm...

Ive also used my Nexus as my media player in my Toyota 86 (FR-S), im using a JVC KD-X50BT which has bluetooth and its just media player so no CD drive which is behind the tablet and it has two USB plus. I use one USB for external USB drives and the other one is for the bluetooth which my cellphone is paired it so i can receive calls while driving. The tablet is plugged into the AUX port for the sound, but the tablet is powered by a mini USB charger 2.1amp in my extra cigarette plug. Im using my cell as a hot spot so that i can stream pandora, netflix, google maps..etc through the tablet. also to contol the volume of my radio thats tucked in the back i used an IR repeater for my remote which i can also change from AUX to USB. It's not really an issue. The tablet turns on and stays on when it connects to power (when the car turns on), then it turns off after a 30 sec timeout once I turn the car off.
As for volume, I usually just leave it on max but there are plenty of widgets on Google Play that can be used to control the volume.
Unfortunately I do need to clip the panel out to turn it off and on, but I don't anticipate needing to to that too often.

Mounted my N7 in my car

So I was sitting at home thinking how cool it would be to use my Nexus 7 as a navigation unit / general multimedia device in my car. I already have a touch screen unit in my car from Pioneer, but it’s not that great. It’s very pixelated, it doesn’t have navigation and it’s a bit small. So I devised a plan on how to mount it in my car. But before building my final mounting bracket, I decided to give it a test run, to make sure that everything would work great. I have all the maps preloaded on the device, and I have it connected to my Galaxy S3 (rooted, custom ROM) for wifi tethering.
I just picked up some “Kwik Klips 3/8” 10mm” from my local hardware store, and cut them up and guess what – it mounted fantastic. Three clips hold it on the bottom, and at the top it is tucked under my stereo door cover to make it very sturdy. I went on a 30 mile trip today just to make sure everything is smooth – and it is. This weekend my parts are supposed to come in so I can have a concealed charging cable for it so it is not using battery.
My car is a 2010 Scion tC.
I’ve uploaded four pics here, but go to my dropbox to see the gallery.

Cool. That's what I figured. I tried to grab a N4 to do the same thing (in the process of rehabilitating from the apple cult), but couldn't get one, so I'm still using the iphone (no tether without paying extra).
Yes I am using my GS3 as a mobile WiFi hotspot for free (custom ROM).
I haven't tried the satellite view yet, I don't mind the cartoonish view too much. But overall using the N7 as a navi has been fantastic.

You might want to try Bluetooth internet sharing. Its honestly the most underrated feature of android >4.0. Sure, the range is 10-20ft, and the speed is limited to 2mbs, but in a car and for navigation apps neither of those matter. You save a lot of battery though and its easy to set up by just tapping a button on your tablet only.

Bluetooth internet sharing is definitely not the ultimate solution. Many apps won't work with it. Prime examples: Pandora and TuneIn Radio. Also, nothing will download from the Play Store (at least apps).
You'll save a lot of battery on the phone, sure. When I was trying out bluetooth tether my N7 got prettyy hot, and was fine with Wifi sharing. Perhaps it was simply an app causing that, but I don't think so.
I just removed the radio cover, and placed the N7 in the hole.
...and since I'm still a noob:

I'm still rocking the stock head unit; no one wants that.
I thought about trimming the extra plastic off the cover (just enough to fit) and set it back in place when I parked the car.
Depends on the Bluetooth setup. If you are not using Bluetooth to stream the sound, uncheck it in the Pandora settings and Pandora works great.
I download apps all day long using Bluetooth for my data. I find it easier then dealing with a hotspot. Battery life is significantly better for me to.

Does BT support multiple simultaneous pairings? I usually have my phone tied to the car via BT. If it can do that and data share, that'd be awesome. Well, maybe. Not sure if it'd help, but it'd be nice to know.

If you were talking to me, yeah I did get the charging cable installed, and no I didn't have to rough it up at all. The tape that was with those clips was sufficient.
But now I took that all off. I just bought this iBolt windshield mount for my GS3. It's easier for me this way, because I don't have to setup tethering and charge two devices.
It was fun though while it lasted.
And it blocked my radio, so that got really annoying after a few days of not being able to switch XM channels.

Nexus 10 Official Dock?

Just watched the Android Christmas Card video....there is a Nxxus 10 dock pictured right at the 1:00 mark...hoping this is real. Looks like it is.
It's certainly encouraging. With the news of the POGO pin connector, the pictures of the Nexus 7 dock and now this video from the Android Team, I'm very hopeful. I know I will buy the dock as soon as it is released.
It would be a Christmas miracle!

Some of us wants to be able to use a dock as a dock... charging faster will be a plus for me but i'd like to use an official POGO pin dock that I can place on my counter to charge as I browse. Or even slow the battery drain when I play music/movie.

Nocoast, shame you can't use it on the n10. I'm sad no company has made a generic qi home dock for phones and tablets. I'm even more sad no company has made a universal car qi dock.
I use touchstones in the car and house for my gnex and the wife's s3. Of prefer having something more future proof for phones like the n4 that have it built in. Hardware jacks aren't that fun. The touchstone are nice and small though, but the phone angles will in it are shallow. Pivot mount mechanism works in the car though.
I gotta say I don't think that's a dock at all, it doesn't make sense to have a 4 inch dock for 10 inch tablet, I think that was just a generic plastic stand
Hmm, have you ever seen an official iPad dock? there is a reason behind that, the tablet is not small, big dock will look bulky and no aesthetic with it, maybe Apple know something we don't , but then again there are magnets, we also don't know what the shape of it, maybe it holds still, and actually similar to iPad dock...just my thoughts :cyclops:

The N10 is my first Nexus product & I expected more from Google in the way of accessories. I work for B&N & we have the widest & most varied selection of accessories that I have ever seen for any device under one roof. Perhaps I'm just spoiled, but I don't think my expectations are too high. Google has the capability to provide accessories & I don't understand why they haven't.

[Q] For those of you with the Z3 Compact already...

I am considering getting this phone to upgrade from my Galaxy S II, but I have a couple of questions.
The button placement: it looks like the power and volume buttons are right in the middle of the phone. That's exactly where my car mount is going to be gripping the phone. Is that going to be a problem? Same with the magnetic charging port. What do you use to mount this in your car?
Does this have proper file transfer support? It takes about 20 minutes to tranfser a 1gb file to my nexus7 over USB while it takes seconds on my Galaxy S. I've read this is because Google doesn't pay Microsoft for the patent to do this properly while Samsung does. What does Sony do? Is there proper file transfer support over USB like Samsung or is it going to be painfully slow like on the nexus?
For your mount question, I'd suggest getting a car mount specifically made for the Z3C as soon as one is made. Haicom makes great model-specific mounts, I have a Haicom bike mount for my phone and it has a good and sturdy fit. Much much better than any of those universal mounts.
For the file xfer question, I think android moved to MTP only at some point - it may have been with ICS. What version of android is on your GSII?
In my experience MTP has been much slower when compared to native file system browsing - especially when transferring many small files.

Also for the mount, I have one of these and personally I would never go back to phone specific mounts. I have been using this for the past 2 or 3 years and have it mounted to my dash using an adhesive mount that I rigged to mate up with this one. I can't speak for the suction cup, but the grip itself is VERY strong and I have never had a phone even come close to trying to jump out of this thing. I currently mount my N5 in it in landscape mode and offset from center. I don't have my Z3C yet (monday) but I do not expect to have any issues mounting it in this mount.

Btw, pro-tip...this mount can be very hard to open one-handed. For my N4 and the phone before that I stuck a dime inside the mount to keep it wedged open. When I got my N5 I upgraded the spacer coin to a nickel. With this cheap mod you can easily insert and remove your phone with one hand and the grip on your phone is still more than adequate, as I mentioned above.

You can use a mount, although it needs to be offset quite a way to avoid clashing with buttons, I have the deff magnetic charger, and it just doesn't stay on the port :/
Great for at home with the phone lying flat, but when the phone is mounted horizontally it doesn't reliably stay on so I'm looking for another magnetic charge option, or I'll have to bite the bullet and just use micro usb. My point is that this mount is so good that I have no desire to go back to phone specific mounts. I upgrade my phone at least once a year. Buying a mount for ONE phone that I have to replace when I upgrade is crazy IMO. Not to mention that I am very particular about mounts, don't like window mounts, don't like vent mounts, so options for phone specific mounts that I would actually consider are few and far between.

You have the deff micro usb adapter? I just got two and they seem very strong. One of them can lift my sim cutter by itself which is 158 grams. I was really hoping to use one in the car and it seems like it should be more than strong enough to stick.

It's not the strength, its the fact that it's attached to a relatively stiff cable, and the thing when not placed flat tends to try and tilt to one side or the other so it falls off very easily from the upside down position.
So if I do hold it offset to avoid the power button, I'll have to grip it nearer the top to avoid the camera button, but that's where the micro USB port is, so how is that going to work? I have an older version of the Exomount and don't really want to buy anything phone specific since I've been through Nokia, Samsung, BlackBerry and now possibly Sony in the past few years.
Could anyone provide a photo of their z3c looks like intheir car mount?
As for the file transfer, the stock ROM on 4.1 still supported the faster file transfer on the Galaxy SII. I'm on cyanogen mod with android 4.3 and it only does MTP. I have to take the SD card out every time or wait an hour to transfer the files. Which isn't as bad as the nexus with no removable memory, but still stupidly annoying. So you're saying Sony only supports MTP? Do you guys have the z3c or one of the recent z-series phones?
Every device which comes with 4.1 or later on release will only have MTP. Mass storage is dead - Google killed it.

I have the deff micro usb adapter as well, and it's definitely a huge exercise in patience and delicacy when trying to get it to stick, even on a flat surface lol. Perhaps you got lucky with one of the good ones? Or can anyone else that has one also chime in with their experience?

Gotcha. My cable in the car is very thin and pliable so hopefully that means I wont have that problem.

I'll take a pic when I get mine on monday if no one else has by then and let you know of any problems I have noticed. I have the u grip which holds the phone similarly to the exomount.

I'm using Sony XSP-N1BT in my car. Best car stereo I bought in years! It acts as a smartphone cradle and it is very secure meaning your xperia won't pop out if you hit a bump., check it out :good:

That's interesting, I'd actually consider buying that, except I don't know how I'd be able to keep my phone charged, as it doesn't appear to have a magnetic charging point and the usb port is on the long side under a cover on the Z3c

When you say every device, which devices/manufacturers do you mean?
My Xperia T is on 4.1.2 and does have Mass Storage option (for the micro-sd card memory only). Cannot remember if this was present in the 4.3 update as I am back on 4.1

I also have a T - it was my previous phone. If you remember the phone was released with 4.0.3. This is why Sony kept the backward compatibility with this when they updated to 4.1.

Do you mean that the Z3c doesn't have a magnetic charging point?
If that's what you mean: luckily you are wrong, I'll get my z3c with the headphones (like many others) and a magnetic charging dock.
If that's not what you mean: sorry, then I probably missed some other piece of the conversation

Actually if you look at the last pic for this stereo on Crutchfield.com you will see that it does have the magnetic charging points built in. Even so, $200 for what amounts to a phone dock is very expensive.

The car stereo charges your xperia using built in magnetic charging connector. It works like a charm! All xperia devices are supported except for Z ultra due to its size and original Z. But the audio quality over bluetooth is amazing! It got built in clearaudio + and DSEE. I paired it with inifinity speakers and JL audio amplifier.

sorry for going OT, does the mic on your T work well? or does the other side find it hard to hear?
