A Crazy Idea for a New OTG Way to Access Data Outside Nexus (and non-cloud) - Nexus 7 General

TL;DR I have a cool, but hypothetical, idea for an alternate non-cloud way to access your data
There are many threads in which people are asking (and a few hyper-ventilating and a few ranting) about how they are to access non-cloud data on an N7 in light of the Nexus 7's lack of an SD-card reader. Just to name a few threads, there are: OTG USB cable, Questions About Specs OTG or WIFI Direct, The N7 Supports OTG Through Root, HDMI out and OTG Support and For Those Worried About Lack of Storage (USB-OTG Discussion Thread). And that's just for starters. As of this writing (which may be expired, null and void by tomorrow), the options seemed to boil down like this:
1. OTG (on-the-go) use of USB-based storage. Whether this refers to a way to read a memory card, such as an SD Card, or reading from a thumb/jump/flash drive or from an external USB HDD (hard disk drive) or external USB SSD (solid-state drive).
Concerns and Disadvantages: We don't know yet the voltage of the USB port (or the electrical current load it can sustain), but it's starting to look like maybe 3.3 volts is all she wrote. If that's true, then virtually nothing that is currently available will run off the USB port unless you put a powered USB hub between the N7 and whatever you're trying to read-write from.
I don't know how you feel about dongl'ing a powered hub (or battery-powered hub) between your N7 and your storage (whether that's an SD card in a card-reader or a thumb/jump/flash drive or whatever) , but that's a lot of stuff daisy-chained onto your tablet. Perhaps acceptable when you're at home, but it's sort of Rube Goldberg-ish to think of doing that on the road, in a plane, at a coffee shop. at work....
2. PRIVATE CLOUD. Devices such as the Seagate Satellite (500gb) and the various models (64gb, 32b, 16gb) of the Kensington Wi-Drive have an on-board server and WIFI wireless access point. The Seagate claims 7+ hours (6+ in my experience based on heavy ues) and the Kensington about 4 hours. Other than turning it on, you can leave it in your pocket, backpack, purse or attaché, and it will serve, by wifi, whatever you want.
Concerns and Disadvantages: The 500gb Seagate Satellite is about $150 (if you shop hard). The 32gb Wi-Drive is about $85 and the 64gb Wi-Drive is about $180.
The Satellite is bigger than than the Wi-Drive, but both are bigger than you probably want to haul around with you.
I might... maybe... possibly... have a better idea. But it's hypothetical for the moment.
The Satellite and Wi-Drive have on-board computers (on a chip) and WIFI hardware, but their overall size is maybe more than you want. But if you removed the drive (on the Satellite) or the flash memory (on the Wi-Drive), it would not be so big, even with the battery.
What about a device like the Satellite / Wi-Drive that just reads SD Cards instead? The Satellite and the Wi-Drive are just Linux computers-on-a-chip with a battery. They're sort of like this, I guess. Anyway, what if someone manufactured a battery-powered device whose only job was to serve up, by WIFI (and to create the WIFI environment, as needed) whatver storage appeared on a memory card, such as an SD Card?
What would you pay for something like that?
Heck, I bet that many... several... a few people on this forum could take off-the-shelf components (a Linux computer-on-a-board, WIFI circuitry and a battery, plus a card reader/writer) and make it all work -- and sell it for under $99.
Google / Amazon / Apple / Big Brother, may want us to live within a "cloud envionment" but we don't have to accept that.

Hmmm... perhaps... maybe... I'm not quite the genius that I pretend to be. But thanks, though, I'll look into the AirStash. It seems just a tad overpriced, but it (and the Wi-Drive and the Satellite) is still a solution to nearly everbody's gripe about the N7 with respect to lack of an SD Card slot.

Not sure if i am missing something here but i just use the 64gb sd card on my galaxy note and my to it to access data stored there. I'll do the same with the nexus 7

It doesn't have a SD slot not have the support for USB OTG storage (per Anandtech.com).

hey i found the wi drive 16gb for $48.95 its not bad considering that going from 8 to 16 gb cost $50 from the google play store

If I tether my phone (razr retail.en.eu stock) i can use wifi file explorer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dooblou.WiFiFileExplorerPRO&hl=en to browse the files on my phone including the sd card.
Total price £0.59 no extra equipment needed. Not sure if the free version works.

ES File Explorer will also allow you to do this. It let's you read from LAN, FTP, BT....etc. I was just streaming a movie from my laptop to my Cappy using ES before checking in here. So I'm thinking it may be a viable option when tethering the tablet to my phone except I'll be serving the content from either my phone's internal storage or it's ext sd card.

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't the USB standard 5V? Seems to me nothing would run, including the controllers and such that are supposed to work(?), if 5V was not there. Unless it is something nasty like proprietary accessories only.
As far as current goes, I would think it would support at least a unit load of 100mA if it is standard compliant. I figured this would be enough for sticks or card readers but surprisingly I checked the units that I have and apparently the card reader wants 250 mA, the 8 and 16GB sticks want 300 mA and the tiny 32GB stick I bought last week for cheap wants the full 500 mA. No idea they were so hungry (maybe they aren't and just set high amounts anyways), that might blow my hopes of hooking up that tiny 32GB stick on the go out of the water... I wonder what the guys have have been playing with hooking up mass storage have been using.

Thanks for not calling me a dumba~~. If I'd posted the same thing on Reddit.com/r/android, within 15 minutes there would have been 20 people calling me an idiot for being unaware of the AirStash.
While XDA isn't immune to the occasional flame war or troll, the level of discourse here and the desire to help each other is really fantastic. I am so thankful for XDA.

I don't get why this is even being discussed. Either 8/16gb is enough for you or this tablet is NOT for you. If you need more storage, you either need 3/4g or an SD card slot and you need to move on. Who is going to walk around with a wifi hard drive in their pocket (not to mention keeping both charged)? Who is going to use a tablet with a hub and a hard drive attached to it? Who is going to use a tablet with a flash drive hanging out of it held in place only by a fragile little micro USB plug? All these solutions mean you'd be better off using a computer.
Either tether it with your phone, only use it at home or forget about it.

I might just because I can.
For the most part I just want a bigger screen to watch movies, browse the internet, and remotely connect to my computer and server and display the x11 using nvc, my phone is too small for it.
16 GB should be fine. I have 2TB on my server for cloud at home and on the go.
But if I could just plug in a usb to the tablet then that would be fine too.

Crazy how my 16gb Tab has filled up so quickly.
I know Samsung dumped a load of stuff on it but I don't have any music on it, few vids, but the games take up quite a lot.

Are USB STicks effective? Might need to get a 32gb one.
You can use an usb, I use that for my movies instead of on the tab.

You should store video on usb, remove old games, and clean rubbish file on your tab.
I know the feeling but i got back space by streaming music and movies. I use my tab at home so I have no need to put music & video on the tab. Maybe you should consider it.

Agreed . . . expandable storage is now in my top 3 essential features for my next tab.
How are you guys watching your movies from the USB stick? Are you using the media dock? I've been trying to find a case that would hold the tablet up side down, but no luck so far

Best thing I've found to do is keep a stock of films on the external card and when you want to watch one copy it to the internal card and detach. Only takes a couple of minutes and then you can watch them normally without having to have it up side down.
It is very annoying that they didn't include an SD slot in this thing. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, but then they want to sell the higher volume ones for an extra $100 like Apple... Bah.
For me I don't tend to put films or music on it, so I have plenty of space since it's all just apps and books. My music all goes on my phone, and I stream films on Netflix. Problem is that I don't have films where there's no Wi-Fi, but I've considered using rental for those situations.
One option is cloud solutions like dropbox... You can always store your movies in your dropbox folder on PC and download them from the app when you want to watch them...
What about large HD movie files (> 4 GB)? I understand that NTFS flash drives can't be read, and as far as I know files > 4 GB can't be written on FAT32?
Would like to know the answer to this, too. What is everyone using to connect to the unit, how is it formatted. And how fricking STUPID is it that these moron companies are not adding SD slots to these things? I mean are they seriously that stupid?!? Good grief....how dumb....
As sad as it sounds, companies sell tablets with no external storage option because we (and consumers that just plain don't know any better) keep buying them. Granted, it's a self-licking ice cream cone situation - SD slotless tablets are produced to cut corners and the bottom line, consumers keep buying them (even buying more - the tablet market is the strongest it's ever been) because that's all there is available: therefore companies are justified saving a few cents on each tablet they sell that lacks an SD slot.
The perfect way to change a "standard." Force the market to skew a certain direction and use that as an "indicator" to what consumers want.

Not stupid, just greedy. They want to sell you a 32GB, 64GB etc. version for a good chunk of extra money at next to no cost to them, like Apple.
Contrary to some ppl I think removing SD card is not such a big deal. It makes the tab cheaper and saves me money. If I need extra data I have two adapters for usb devices and flash memory allowing me to get what I want.
Personally I find it wiser for my budget.
It'd be nice if external HDD's worked though..

This works as external HDD, it even has a dedicated app.
I know, it's the only thing that does. But it's pretty expensive.
Having sd card slot on honeycomb is not really a good thing. On the stock galaxy tab 7.7 the sdcard is mounted as read only, can only write with system apps. (unless you root that is) .. thats why all my gaming emulator roms had to be on the internal storage.
With google increasing the limit from 50mb to 4gb .. we gonna need more internal storage.
Attach is my 16gb tab 7.7 .. slowly reaching its limit.. even with only 84 apps installed.
........and 64gb of read only media which no app can modify
you can share your computer as a NAS storage, very easy
In Spain it is very difficult to find GT's with more than 16 GB in retail stores. I had to purchase a 16 GB version of my GT 8.9 3G and I find it somewhat short of storage capacity. 64 GB is maybe too much but the sweet spot is definitively 32 GB, that should be the minimum for tablets.

reviews doesn't look so bad, i plan on putting only media and nothing personal on it, so security won't be an issue, thoughts?

Root your 7 and use StickMount and OTG Mini USB cable to mount a USB Flash Drive. I got a Kingston 64GB USB 3.0 drive for $75. I got USB 3.0 to speed up transfers from my computer to the USB drive...obviously usb 3.0 doesn't do anything for the 7 (but it is backward compatible). Currently the only downside is you have to reboot after you unplug it in order for it to recognize it again.

Of course, this only works for one Nexus 7...so if you need more than one person to access the drive...the OP's suggestion is better.

I picked up the 16GB on Amazon for $39 (now it's $49). I like to go camping and drive long distances, the size should be good enough for media to keep me and or the kids happy without tethering and risking using insane amounts of data.
If only I can access the files and folders DIRECTLY (AFP, SMB, etc) without the Seagate app, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.
I've played with the WiDrive and it work pretty good. It was the 32gb version. They now make a 128gb version.

I mentioned it in a similar thread to this as well, but I have gone ahead and ordered one since then. Look up the Patriot Gauntlet Node if you already have some loose 2.5in HDDs or SSDs sitting around. A tiny bit more expensive considering that it does not come with a drive...but worth it if you understand its flexibility.

64GB flash or SD card?

Hi,
I have 32gb version, but like to have more for traveling (movies etc.) and an extra 64gb should be fine (want as portable as possible, so dont want hdd).
I was wondering, if it is better to get:
a) a flash drive, and connect it via short usb>miniUsb cable
or to get
b) an SD card, and connect it via sdReader>usb>miniUsb cable
b) seems a bit longer route, but it would be more future proof, IF Nexus will get keyboard dock with and SD card slot.
So my questions would be:
1) would both, a) and b) methods work for extending storage when needed
and
2) what probability of Nexus 10 getting either official or 3rd party keyboard with SD card slot?
Thank you
Both should work. I've done a quick test with a spare 8GB stick i had and that worked. So now looking at buying a 64GB USB stick. I'm going with USB for the speed of transferring files.
Another option i considered was a portable battery powered hdd with wifi capabilities. But don't think that would sustain 1080p playback.
In terms of the keyboard option i have no idea. However i don't think id want to plug in a keyboard every time i wanted to watch something extra!

Ordered cheap cable, choosing from flash drives. Will probably take Sandisk Ultra 64gb, ~30 pounds, unless anyone knows a faster one for that price?
Depends if you want to spend a bit more for faster speeds. The ultra only writes at a specified 10MB/s so probably a little less than that.

Well my PC only has USB 2.0, and Im not planning on changing it any time soon.
And when I do, bigger and cheaper USB 3.0 will be available.
And as far as I know, to get faster speeds on USB 2.0, would cost me ~2x the price (~60 pounds for 64gb version), and i dont really want to spend that much on a flash, that will be used only when travelling

SD Card to Nexus 10

When I go on trips I find myself taking my digital camera and Nexus 10 with me. I'm still pretty new to the Nexus 10 and I'm wondering what might be the easiest way to transfer pictures from the digital camera's SD card (not micro SD) directly to the Nexus 10? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Nexus 10 needs to be "rooted" to effectively use the USB port...is that true? If not, is there a consensus on what adapter / cable / card reader might be best to achieve this?
Look fro a thread on OTG cable or something like that for a SD Card reader links. You'd need the StickMount app for that and need to be rooted to use that app.

So "Yes," it must be rooted to have the Nexus 10 see an SD card via the micro USB port?
Woh neddy. No need to root. Use nexus media importer app, my device is stock unrooted with otg SD card reader. Works good.
I mention a USB reader I got today in another post, titled something like "USB otg multi SD card reader, working n10" etc. It streams video off the card nicely too.

No you don't need to be rooted to see the SD card. However if you want to write to the SD card you must be rooted.
You could also try an Eye-Fi card. It goes in your camera and transfers photos through a wireless network setup by the card. I have one for my DSLR and love it. Transfers on the fly as you take photographs if your tablet is on near the camera.

Thanks! I've seen those before and considered it, but they seem a little pricey and I've noticed quite a few people complaining about stability issues and that the transfer rates are pretty poor. If you have DSLR I suspect the file sizes are pretty large. I would be curious to hear what your experience is with transferring pictures from your DSLR to your Nexus 10? Is it fairly quick?
Also, I noticed on Amazon.com that Transcend has a wireless SD Card as well. They cost quite a bit less than Eye-Fi. I wonder what makes Eye-Fi different from Transcend's product? If anyone knows please let me know.
As you asked about transfer from cam to nexus 10 you do only need an otg cable/reader and nexus media importer app to do that. Been doing it most of yesterday from canon eos 550d SD card to n10.
Best Try that before spending more on eyefi or rooting etc . just to be able to save to SD which I'd not see a use for in a camera situation. You'd be only reading off card onto nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 7
But would you be able to delete files from the card, to make more space? I'd like to pull videos from my GoPro. They are pretty large so the MiFi card won't work.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
After i've Copied pics to n10 then i just use the delete feature of the camera to empty the card. The card has to go back in the camera so its no inconvenience. I don't know if you can delete from your go pro. Any old cheap SD card holding camera would do for deleting however.
Ok sure if a meteor strike was looming or something, being rooted may be advantagous but for most scenarios involving a camera SD card this is a simple solution, I had to choose a simple one as its for my dads n10 and his camera and he and technology don't mix unless its piss easy.
OPs question is answered comprehensibly as far as I see it! Go forth get the cable/reader, the app and don't worry!
Sent from my Nexus 7
I've never felt like the transfer rates were slow with my eye-fi card with my DSLR. Seems to only take a 3 or 4 seconds per pic.

Thanks everyone for all the information. I've purchased one of the Micro USB OTG cables from Amazon. Hopefully, it will do what I need.
With stock (non-rooted) N10, I used an OTG cable to connect my camera directly to the tablet using its micro-USB cable (ie N10 <--> OTG <--> camera cable <--> camera). The camera uses PTP to transfer the files, and tablet recognized it and immediately opened the Gallery with the pictures inside the camera. I could browse and import the pictures, but not delete them. But deletion is not necessary, you can still use the camera's menus for that.
The above does work quite well, but doesn't see video files to import or give chance to view them immediately like you can with SD card reader and media importer app. At least on our canon.
Handy to have that 2nd option though for pic import.

If not, is there a consensus on what adapter / cable / card reader might be best to achieve this?

Write to SD card without root

However if you want to write to the SD card you must be rooted.

Look at the "USB Stick Plugin-TC (noroot)" in the Play-Store.
It allows write access to attached USB sticks for devices which are not rooted.

Can anyone recommend a seller on Amazon or EBay that sells a good quality and inexpensive OTG cable?

It's like buying a any cable for your computer. Pretty much any one will do. I bought the cheapest OTG 90 degree cable that amazon had good reviews for, it works just fine. Amazon search OTG cable, if it has some good reviews, just buy it, it's pretty hard for a company to screw up making a usb cable.

Thanks for posting this- I've just backed it. The $10 early bird with free worldwide shipping is an easy buy from me.
Now let's see someone build it into a case like they do for the batteries (better yet, along with a battery), so we can have a card permanently mounted.
I supported the micro-usb product and though it was delayed significantly (IMO), it worked as promised. I have already backed the USB-C.
Just backed this for a type c version, thanks!
I backed this the other day as well thanks to this thread

I picked up their 1st gen card reader and it has been incredibly useful. I definitely recommend supporting these guys.
Thanks for the thread!

Nice, that looks like the Sandisk one I have that is USB micro to USB A, but mine has built in memory and doesn't use a microsd card.
I just found the sandisk wireless flash drive the other day if anyone is looking for an unplugged experience. It works through WiFi, but you don't need internet. Supports up to 128gb cards. I feel like if I had an adapter sticking out of my phone something would get broken fast, even if it was only for 5 minutes. I'm a major butterfingers lol.

I'd usually agree with this, but I plan on using this to watch movies sometimes when I'm on transportation. I' d just put it portrait and prop it up, so probably wouldn't need to touch it too much.
Just so you all know, Monoprice has already made something like this, which is also works with USB A. I can't post a link to amazon due to a new account, but it's called the Monoprice Dual Mode USB-C MicroSD Reader.
