I have been conflicted about the decision ASUS/Google made to omit a HDMI port & microSD slot on the N7. I feel the need to get a 7" android tablet but I am wondering if I should try this XO Vision 7'' Tablet For $99 to hold me over until someone makes a more fully featured 7" inch tablet, or just go with the Nexus 7 and make due with whatever workaround solutions I can find.
I am hoping that someone will come out with a tablet with the the same specs as the Nexus 7 with the added features of expandable storage and HDMI out. If they do this in the near future, I could then give this cheaper tablet to a family member as a gift and upgrade to whatever this new device is and not feel like I was missing out.
This budget tablet has pretty decent specs for the money except for the low resolution screen. I think if it had a better screen I wouldn't even hesitate.
Anyone have opinions either way?
All you asked for is an opinion, not facts. So here goes:
If you buy a $99 tablet, you will regret it. It will not be something to get you by, it will be something to throw at a wall.

Meh. The specs are OKAY. The low resolution screen kinda sucks (800x400). Personally i wouldn't trade the Nexus 7's support str8 from google, latest OS updates, the great rom/kernel development that I'm sure will come in the next few weeks/months for this tablet.
If HDMI and SD card support is that important to you then....
i get the feeling there are chinese tablets out there for similar price with better specs. The problem is finding them.

Get the Nexus 7. Sure, other devices are going to come out with expandable storage, but this is a Nexus device. Everyone who waits for one and doesn't get it because it doesn't have X feature ends up wanting one in the long run anyway. This happened to me with the Galaxy Nexus. I decided to not wait any longer and bought the S II. I love my S II, but I would rather have the Nexus right now.
Either way, the $100 you spend on that tablet would be a waste. The low screen resolution would be enough to turn me away from it. The resolution on my S II (which is AMOLED, so not a fair comparison) is higher than that and it's almost three inches smaller. Imagine how horrible it would look on a 7" tablet. I mean, the Nook Color has a better screen and that one looks grainy to me at this point.

And keep in mind this tablet would only be to hold me over for a couple of months until a more PREMIUM option comes along with BETTER specs than the N7. I would have easily paid $300 for an 8gig N7 if it had the extra features I want. I have a 16 gig N7 on order which will cost me 286.33 anyway if I don't cancel. If I get this other tablet I wouldn't have to wait any more either.
Any analysis would be appreciated by the way.

Well If you want something to hold you over for a few months until you find what you want, you should probably go with the Nexus 7 and sell it on ebay when you find what you want. It will have much better resale then the XO and it will be a much more satisfying user experience.
Chances are the Nexus 7 will end up costing you the same in the long run as the XO once you take into account resale so you not really wasting anything and get a better system until the time you upgrade.

Yeah that.. you kind of beat me too it.
The problem isn't the anemic hardware, but the crappy software. You'd want one with good community support. Right now, that's the KF. NC has good support too, but it's two gens old and a bit too slow.
Would suggest a used KF for around $100. Geeks are dumping it in favor of the new flavor. If you want mainly a good e-reader, suggest NC for $50-70. Both of course have ample support here. Set a search bot for CL listing in your area.

Now this is what I'm looking for. I am looking for something with at least ICS on it though. And as these three are all in the same price category I'd definitely go with the N7 out of these for the OS alone. Do you really think resale of the N7 will be a viable option? I guess if I just knock up to $100 of what I paid, I could sell it and I'd be in that same situation as if I blew $100 on the XO tablet.

I guess I have to kind of agree. Hadn't really thought about reselling as I hate selling things. But I am begining to believe this is probably the best course of action.

get a samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0, it has expandable storage and i think that it also has hdmi out too.

The day of the Google I/O keynote when they announced the Nexus 7 I almost did just that. I am still thinking about that option as well. The only reason I haven't done it is, I am left to wonder when/if it will ever receive the 4.1 update to JB. If I knew it was coming soon I think I'd be better off with this tablet for what want in a 7" tablet.
Is this thread about making an edgy decision for you? Seems you had your mind made up but wanted others to confirm and give you extra reasons to side with the N7

Agree with this guy. You sound like you want 4.1, it's going to be a while before any other tablet gets that.
And the other guys above are right in the fact that N7 will hold it's value well. Go with the N7 and forget that piece of crap XO, you will regret the XO. It might even turn you off of tablets completely.
Get N7 and be done with it.
Then just resell it if something better comes along. And hey... if nothing better comes along... guess what, you've got the best tablet available at this price!
I'm personally planning to do exactly what I and others are suggesting to you as well.
I'm ordering an N7, but I, like you, would really like the HDMI out, so we'll see what Acer comes out with with their a110, and we'll see what other companies come out with as well and I'll look into video out workarounds in the mean time, perhaps we'll find a suitable work around and get to keep our super sexy HD screens and the latest versions of Android (including all future updates they day the are released rather than waiting months for other companies to implement updates - if ever).
Rock yourself an N7 my friend... just do it, stop hesitating, you'll thank us all later.
(not sure if I should even add this part to not confuse you even further but - if for some reason you're set on getting a cheap junk Chinese tablet to save a dollar though there's a lot better options than the XO Vision, keep in mind they're all still junk though, I'd say look at something like this instead: Ramos W6HD or perhaps Ainol NOVO Mars - I still say go with the N7 though, you'll be a lot happier in the long run)

OK. Done. I am taking your guy's advice. But first, I'll back up a bit. I have a 64G LTE iPad. It has become my main device, I love the battery life & instant on features the most. I am completely sold on tablets. However the entire time I've owned the iPad, Android guys were telling/showing how easy it was to just stick in a microSD card full of movies & watch them or download something from the web on their tablet, pull out the MicroSD card stick it in a USB adapter & transfer files to any other computer. I've longed for those features as Apple has denied them to me as they must not think I can handle it. I have also come to the conclusion that I'd like a smaller, lighter, more portable device to carry everywhere that didn't cost me $900 like my iPad+smart-cover. So, for a LONG-TERM 7" android tablet at a MINIMUM, I'd like Buttery smooth (iPad-like) Jelly Bean, on at least a dual-core 1+ Ghz tablet, 1+ GB ram, with screen res of AT LEAST 1024x600, and it should have MicroSD & HDMI out, along with 9-10 battery life for being online. That's what I'd like in a LONG-TERM 7" android device. Any more would be a bonus. But I have decided to settle for the Nexus 7 until someone comes along with my Dream Tablet, and then I'll knock off $100 of the $286.33 I will have paid and use the remaining balance toward whatever the Nexus 7 killer is.
I think Android could possibly be better than iOS with this new Jelly Bean version but only if combined with hardware that takes advantage of all of its capabilities. I think Google/Asus hit a home run with the Nexus 7 but they could have easily made it a GRAND SLAM.

Apple unfortunately has made tablets seem necessary, when they truly aren't. But as a techie, I feel I should probably get one.
I don't want an iPad or anything to do with Apple. And I'd love to wait until a hybrid model (docking tablet that turns from a mobile OS into a full OS when docked), because they are going to the be the future (quote me).
Should I wait around for the Acer Android 3.0 tablet? Should I wait for a Galaxy Tab price drop? Should I wait for a Windows 8 tablet?
Thoughts?

Hmm..well,go on for the Gal tab...You may consider waiting for the other two you mentioned,but considering the high price that they'd be launched,i would prefer a Gal Tab...Apple Sucks...
I hate to say it but if you want a tablet today then you should go with an iPad. It has the platform and the apps plus it'll retain it's resale value once dual-core tablets start hitting the market early next year. I know everyone is complaining that there is no flash on the iPad but the reality is that flash is not viable right now, not for Apple OS and not for Android 2.2.
I've had a chance to play with a Galaxy tab and I fell in love with it but at $600 off contract and $400 with a 2 year contract it doesn't make sense to purchase one. Dual-core tablets will be out early next year that will have Android 3.0 and enough power to run circles around flash. Why would I want to be locked into a 2 year contract or pay $600 for a tablet that will lose a lot of it's resale value in 3 months.
If you have money to burn then get a galaxy tab, if you want to get the most out of your tablet when you decide to resell in a few months then get an iPad, or just wait it out cuz the next generation of tablets are going to see a huge increase in performace and battery life.

Well, I hate Apple and their motivation enough not to invest. I'm not buying any apps. I want that **** for free. I'm not giving any money to such an elitest tyrant as Jobs, and I'm not paying for something that is made for idiots.

Hell,i'd still recommend the Gal tab...I got that sarcastic note off your post Yet,true,iPad doesn't have much of free apps to play around..It makes no sense to buy an iPad and pay for apps while we buy a Gal Tab and get all the apps free...

yes... That's the spirit.. I too would prefer plunking my money down on galaxy tab if i had the itch to purchase something right now... The ipad is way too polished, elitist and weirdish.... In my opinion..
Apple products need itunes on pc... And itunes on my pc is the biggest bloatware for me
no doubt it has bigger screen but let us wait and see what do the 2nd gen tabs have to offer.. Maybe the whole ipad phenomenon might get washed out by 2nd gen samsung or dell tablets..
I'm getting a blackpad (officially named Playbook but I like Blackpad better=P). 1Ghz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, Adobe Flash (Never coming to an Apple product), HDMI output at 1080p, plus HD recording and much more. I'm gooood.

I originally wanted the Dell Duo before it was even announced. I was looking for a "netverible" and ended up buying an HP Touchsmart TM2 instead. But now that it's out and the battery life is quoted at ~4 hours, I'd rather wait for next year's processors. Definitely like the hard keyboard. Virtual ones suck and I hate that nobody is willing to admit that.

Well,it doesn't happen with me on the virtual gesture keyboard[the basic one] on my hTC Opal, still,i get fed up of typing when tired. I wish i had a Touch pro series device, but i can't afford it[student] and there is no such occasion coming up so that i can request my dad to gift 1 to me!

Alright so here's the deal....
I've had this Nook Color for a long time but i l've realized it's become more of a toy to tinker with instead of a tablet. I was constantly working on it instead of using it as a tablet. So i gave up and posted it on Ebay and was going to sell it but now i've installed the latest phiremod and... i feel like my nook is finally there. Video is actually worth a damn and it's all smooth. What would you guys do? How does the tab compare now? Still a little smoother but not much or.... all opinions welcome. Sorry for punctuation, typing on nook color.

I think you should keep it. I used it just to experiment when I was runing froyo but now I 'm using the latest CM7 (rc4) and I 'm now really using it as a tablet [browsing,reading,some games and the occasional navigation]. It's the perfect tablet for the money I paid.
The cpu speed is equal or better if you use the overclock kernel, the graphics are equal now, the operating system is better cuz it can run gingerbread where the galaxy is just froyo. All in all for 250 bucks youre way way better off with the nook.. and its getting better everyday with the cm7 nightlies.

Hi,
no, they aren't. The galaxy has a newer, more advanced graphic chipset. It's been reported to play almost any video you throw at it, while the nook has significant limitations.

I say keep it. When CM7 goes final with the Tablet Tweaks and Phiredrop mods it, it's going to be epic. That dude really knows how to put a user interface together.

I think the Galaxy can do 720p videos (no need to reencode, can stream from your main system or whatever.)
I also think the bluetooth has a longer range, and it has cameras? It's good stuff, but it's also more expensive.

Which one? The one I see is like $1100?
If you have $1100 to spend, that certainly isn't a bad way to spend it if you want the rugged reliability of the SSD storage.
I also like the $1100 IBM/Lenova Thinkpad convertable. It has better stats and bigger storage, but it uses a normal type of harddrive.

Showing up online for $400 for 16GB and $500 for 32GB.
We all have different requirements but to me the only real competition to a rooted Nook Color right now is the Galaxy Tab. Anything bigger than 8" is in laptop/netbook size territory, which just is not as portable.
And the price of a Galaxy Tab is now in NC territory although you have monthly contract charges for 2 years...
The extra cost involved with the contract, or buying one outright, will keep me happily using an NC. When a 7" tablet with significantly better specs and quality becomes available in the same price range- >$250 then I may consider it.
Right now there is nothing.
But if the size doesn't bother you- well, I have no input really because I haven't seen ANY 10" tablet I would buy.

I agree that 7" is just the right size. The IPad is great and all but it's so bulky. That's why it's between this and the Galaxy Tab. I'm still not sure. I really do like this a lot and it's actually usable since installing RC4 version of Phiremod. Just want something where everything is smooth and works perfectly. Before, the argument couldn't be made that the nook color was all that smooth but it's worlds better now. Thanks for all your input guys.

Stock rooted?
Froyo?
Honeycomb?
CyanogenMod7?
I have gone through all of the above to one degree or another, HC for the shortest time due to the issues since source is not out.
Once CM7 was available I have not even read a thread about another.
It may still be in the nightly/RC stage, but CM7 is extremely good as it is and is in very active development to complete making things perfect.
One of the issues we all have with the NC- lack of hard buttons- even has a project at the "feature freeze" point of bug fixes before release- Tablet Tweaks.

Having seen what even a stock rooted Android 2.1 Nook Color can do, I wouldn't spend money on another 7" tablet. I might buy a 10" Honeycomb tablet like the XOOM if the prices come down for use at home where the extra screen real-estate outweighs the decreased portability. But the Nook Color would still be the device I take with me when I'm leaving home.

It's not double, its $150 more. Comparing it to the 32GB model isn't fair.
You gain a bigger screen (debatable if it's worth it- but for me- typing a little on a 7" screen would be an awkward size, 10" makes it better). And much more power... And bluetooth and all that jazz. With the ability to run 3.0 natively.
Worth $150, up to you.
Take the $300 GTablet. No IPS screen. Is $100 for an IPS screen running 3.0 worth $100? I think so.
Is it worth $150 more than the NC? That's more debatable I think, because you already have a IPS screen. The only thing lacking is 3.0 and the power.
Now....... If the keyboard is included in that $400 price: hands-down, $150 for a tablet you can attach a keyboard to is a freaking no-brainer... The Eee Pad Transformer kills the NC.
But if the keyboard is optional, it's up for debate.
Anytime I've seen the Eee Pad Transformer listed accidentally, it always seems to have the keyboard included. But other times, it seems like it might be an optional thing you buy extra. Weather or not the keyboard is part of that $400 is a huge thing, in my opinion.
If it is, not only does it murder the competition in the tablet market, it'll also murder the competition in the netbook market.
I'm waiting for release (rumored to be April 9) and pricing, and to see if the keyboard is included or not. That Eee Pad Transformer could viably be, a laptop replacement. 16 hours of battery life is awesome. The ability to also use it as a tablet is a huge plus as well.
The ONLY thing- I would want it to be able to do: is boot Windows (so I can use full Office and Windows programs). If I could make it do that: this is an awesome device. Why?
1) Light, long lasting netbook with some power
2) Full Windows apps (stream to 360, etc)
3) Tablet PC for light browsing or on the move
One device to rule them all, one device to bind them......

Of course but the problem is... The NC doesn't have that hardware configuration, lol.
I'm guessing, since it just released 4.5 months ago, we won't see a NC until this fall again. I love the fact B&N isn't trying to crush the open source community on it so I've got hope the next one will be the same way. They need to keep the cost cheap- I think they realize (especially with the upcoming update) they've nailed the cost/feature ratio. Hopefully they don't think, "It's a tablet now, let's charge more" on the NC2.
I'll say keep it and buy better tablet down the road.

But for the same price (actually cheaper)... the Asus 10" gives you IPS, twice the RAM, twice the space...
While if you want 7" this will be the best viable option, could you deal with 3" bigger for better hardware, is the question.

Yup still love it. My first tablet tho. I'm very on the go and 7" is perfection. Battery lasts me most of the day playing galaxy on fire 2 and streaming shows from xfinity. It runs super smooth and touch seems more sensitive than other devices. Sometimes I have an issue where the screen won't respond but turning the screen on and off seems to fix that.

I think what might help inform your decision is what you intend to use the tablet for.
The prime example being, if you need a lot of local storage, this might not be the device for you as it has no removable SD card slot. (although with rooting and USB OTG you can mount external flash devices)
If you're after a great overall tablet for consuming content, I can't think of a better option at this price. I'm virtually addicted to mine (much to my wife's chagrin).
Its the best. Get one ASAP! Device is works very well. Best bang for buck.
Love it. It's a fantastic device and the form factor rocks as far as i'm concerned.

Absolutely no regrets, having the power of Tegra and a stock Android install really shows just how powerful the platform can be. And for the price it really is quality piece of kit, the only downsides to my mind are the lack of expandable storage and no HDMI out. But storage can be solved quickly and very cheaply with an USB OTG cable, the HDMI out will soon be solved through Miracast, and the nearest competitors with these features cost almost double the price.
If you're in the market for a tablet, there's really no competition for the Nexus 7 right now unless money is no object.

I'm looking forward to use a tablet for browsing the internet while I'm on the couch / bed and if possible watch a few episodes of my favorite TV shows while I'm traveling (train / airplane). I'm not much of a gamer and for music I've got my little iPod. That's pretty much it...
I have only one problem with mine. I can't put the damn thing down.

well....yes. I've decided to buy a smartphone (name is not relevant) once, and after only 10 days, I've regretted that decision already. I think after 4 weeks you can decide that already, don't you?
Yes I'm still happy with my purchase. I bought it on July 17 and since then I didn't use my iPad 3 yet. Same thing for my gnex... since I got jelly bean on it I've yet use my iPhone 4s. I understand why apple hates android now!

Well come next Month we find out if Apple are gonna launch an Ipad mini, but the question is will you sell your Nexus 7 to buy one if the specs are decent & it has a Retina display plus if the price lands around what the Nexus 7 16GB is atm.
I have no doubt in my mind there will be plenty of Nexus 7's on Ebay if an Ipad Mini does come about next month.

There's no way Apple will sell an iPad mini at a loss. They have no qualms being the most expensive solution on the market, that's practically their business model. It will be nowhere close to $199. $349 is the lowest I see them pricing an 8GB model.
I love mine, and I don't think Apple is going to fight in the pricing weeds with N7. Lowest the iPAD mini will cost is $249 or maybe even $299
Love it. Perfect form factor for me too. Always felt the iPad was too big for my usage, felt awkward using it out and about. This thing bridged the gap nicely.

Yes, I get more happy the longer I have it. Now after saying that I have to say that screen size is a big factor in deciding what is best for you. I've gone through Acer Iconia A500 10.1 inch, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 inch (still have), iPad New (3) 9.7 inch and now the Nexus 7, 7 inch.
I definitely take the 7 out with me more often than I did the others.
I would visit a Best Buy or some other place that sells tablets that has them in different sized to get a feel for what is good for you and if you decide 7 is the best you should get the Nexus 7. I'm just saying that because I spent a lot of money trying to find my perfect size and should have visited a store in the first place to know my perfect size before going through all those other tablets.
I have the loose screen and it doesn't bother me one bit. It's a great companion for a daily commuter.
I can't put this thing down. It's the only tablet I use anymore.

I recently purchased an N7 but at the MWC I saw ASUS announce the Fonepad.
I would love if I could use my N7 as my every day phone.
The snag is I'm in Canada so it might be hard to obtain one, and I'm not sure how the atom benchmarks against the processor in the current N7.
I've also been considering returning it because I've heard a new version of the n7 is coming out with 1080p and 2GB of ram.
If you always think about what products that will be released in the future, you'll never buy and enjoy anything. The N7 is great. You bought it, now enjoy it.
Well, obviously newer tabs....except cheapo ones, are gonna be better.
If you wanna spend 300....you made a great decision. If you can spend much more, then no you didn't.

I bought the N7 last week and ended up returning it. I'm trying to transition from an iPad to an Android tablet and found the screen quality on the N7 to be lacking. It's an excellent low-end tablet, but the screen quality is nowhere near the iPad.
Right now I'm going to either
a) Get a Nexus 10, OR
b) Wait until Mid-May to see how the refreshed Nexus 7 will turn out.
I love the size of the N7, and I already have a tablet for the moment, so I'm thinking I may choose option b. I also fear that if I end up purchasing a N10, it'll have some amazing hardware refresh in the next 4-5 months and I'll end up getting ticked off.

Low end? Its specs still stand up or beat most newer 7" tablets.
For 7"....not much that's better...the low price is a bonus.
If you're gonna talk 10"....its apples and oranges. They can pack more tech into their bigger size...obviously. Also...some people don't consider 10" cause its too big.
If someone is afraid that something better will come out....that WILL always happen. So better not buy anything....or maybe just rent...so you can upgrade at will!

Probably a poor choice of phrasing on my part (I'm battling a head cold and can't think straight).
The internals are excellent, but the screen isn't great. The screen is on-par or better-than tablets in that size range, but it's not as good as a larger sized tablet. Since the size isn't a major issue with me, I have the luxury of being able to compare the larger screens to the smaller ones. I don't expect them to cram the resolution of an N10 into an N7 though.
My particular N7 also had very washed-out colors and very bad backlight bleeding at two corners. Hopefully any refresh that is done will fix quality issues like this.
I think the screen is fantastic - no issues here.

You could always use Google Voice and GrooveIP together. I use mine as a house phone with that combination while I'm at home. A Google Voice account is free and GrooveIP Lite is free on the play store. There is also a paid version but the free Lite version has everything you need. Use the Google Voice app for texting. All free on a Wi-Fi connection.

The N7 forum is probably the last place you'd ask if you made a good decision. I'd venture a guess that most people would confirm that you made a wonderful decision in purchasing one, regardless of what for.

A bit of good old fashioned research would have answered all questions you have asked here. .
You have bought a quad core, tegra 3 running device which is still quite powerful. It will do whatever you ask it too generally, and it will do it well. I bought mine for £169.99 if i remember correctly, for the 32gig version. If you take all this into account, then go ahead and use it, you`ll find yourself amazed at how good it is, versus value for money, there is nothing better.

Sales figures also confirm why it is such a good device...if your expecting snapdragon 4/ 2 gig ram type hardware then obviously stay of the crack. Respectively, nobody can deny that it is fantastic value for money.

You made a good decision with the information that was available at the time. Don't beat yourself up about it.
I like the direction things are going and I think we will see more 7" tabs with small bezels and voice integration. People get pi$$ed at teh idea of using it as a phone, but like I keep saying you don't have to use it as a phone, its just nice to have additional options.

I find the Nexus 7 to be a blast. It's so much fun getting to experiment with other developer's ROMs on the latest form of Android. Of course there are always updates to be released, nothing's perfect. The Nexus 7 is definitely a good choice considering what other Android tablets are floating around in the market.

I don't see why people would be angry about using a 7" tablet as a phone. We already have a 6"1 phone out now. Heck, we'll see 7“ phones pretty soon.

Best Buy US sells a 32GB Tab S 8.4, is that worth buying at this point? I've gone hands on with it a couple times on the display models, and that screen is simply beautiful. Not a fan of the physical button though. And on the display model, even after using the task manager to kill all, the thing still had 2.5GBs of its 3GBs of RAM in use. Is that normal for you guys? I am uncertain where I'd root/rom it, but I would be disabling swaths of Samsung apps and probably using Nova Launcher. Does the official Lollipop ota scale back the TouchWiz UI?
Or should I just say screw it and wait for the refresh? My Google-fu only turned up a few vague references to this summer though.

I actually bought a tab s 8.4 a couple weeks ago. After evaluating the n9, I realized this was what fit my needs best. I absolutely love it. Yes, I needed to root it to remove some bloat and optimize it a little, but no, I don't have any regrets about my purchase.
Although I don't believe that best buy sells a 32gb version of the 8.4, only the 10.5. Then again, I knew I'd be buying a micro sd card anyways. So now I have 64 + 10 gb internally.
The tablet itself is a pleasure to use and if the other Samsung lollipop updates are any indication, this thing will fly on it. I'm afraid that a few years from now it will not be updated, but if it runs like this for the next few years, I'd be more than happy.
As for pricing, I got mine during a brief sale on buydig where the price dropped to $260 or so. Prices are going down but that doesn't mean it's not a terrific tablet. Hope this helps!

Free ram is wasted ram. On a display model people have been trying lots of different apps and it is good that these have been cached into RAM. That means they can load quickly when you need to open them again. No sense in having 3gb sitting around doing nothing. Android is smart enough to release the ram when you need it for something else.

Awesome! Didn't know that. No problem! Glad to help. Also, regarding ram, the above is correct as well. Demo units are just that. After debloating, I have 1.5-2.5gb as the ranges I've seen in the built in task manager. I do clear all apps in recent apps occasionally, which I'm not sure if it's necessary, but it doesn't hurt.

Most of the time, I wholeheartedly agree. I just get concerned with all a devices RAM is used on a fresh boot.
I just don't want to have buyers remorse in a month, if Samsung releases a refreshed Tab S line with 14nm silicon in it.

I think 449 is correct regular price for the 32gb model. 399 regular price is for 16gb. 16 gb was on sale for 299!
Totally worth it. I got mine a month or so back and one of the reasons was for manga and graphic novel enjoyment. I use Perfect Viewer for my .cbr and .pdf reading - crisp and very readable text on the screen, plus you can have your library on the external SD. Size and acceptable weight in one hand is perfect for reading. I'm on stock firmware, rooted with some Xposed mods here and there. No issues with it so far. I wish the battery would last longer (maybe 1 or 2 hours longer would be perfect for my usage) but I accept that as a consequence of powering a screen this size and resolution.

Probably. I ended up burning some of my stockpiled BB cards and got the 32GB model for 355 with local taxes and in store pick up.

This is my usage as well, though primarily through Comixology. Plenty of their content does have DRM-free PDF and CBR versions though, if I was so inclined to grab them. Probably should for some of the larger series I own.
I have the 32GB model and rooted it on day one then flashed Cyanogenmod.
I use Perfect Viewer for my comic / graphic novel needs and it works great!
You should be able to enjoy comics with Comixology with the lovely screen.
At home, my brightness level is only about 1/56 and it's a beauty to read comics on.
I was thinking of getting the 10.1 version but it was too big for my messenger bag that also houses
my Asus Ultrabook laptop.
You could wait for a couple of months more as the new line of tablets for Samsung will push the price of the Tab S 8.4 lower.
To answer your question, I think, yes it's still worth buying.
One serious problem with the current Tab S generation is the relatively weak CPU/GPU performance. If you read the reviews of Samsung Tab S, NVidia Shield, and Nexus 9 over at anandtech, you see that their benchmark scores of the Tab S look pretty modest relative to practically all big players on the market. This doesn't mean that the tablet always crawls slowly, but considering the pace of the continuous bloating of the operating systems and the web sites, I expect the Tab S to become outdated much sooner than say the Nexus 9. The Tab S should work fine for playing HD videos, ebooks, and most other applications. The screen is beautiful, but the responsiveness can bog down on some truly bloated web sites. Installing Ad Block can help.
It's an EPIC fail that the Google Nexus 9 comes with no sd card slot, but if you can live with only 32GB of storage, get the Nexus 9 IMO or perhaps take a look at Nvidia Shield. This week Best Buy announced $75 off on all Nexus 9 models. If you do get the Tab S, you can get the 16GB model, and then add a 64GB/128GB sd card for a small price (I got my 64GB for $30 on amazon).
I would personally wait for the refresh. I like my Tab S a lot, but its performance is indeed a bit underwhelming. It stutters on very high quality HD videos that my freaking Note 3 has no problems playing.
Samsung might have saved some money by using their own Exynos processor instead of Qualcomm in the Tab S (except for an LTE model or two). Maybe thats their standard practice in tablets, and international models? This did make me hesitate buying it but I ended up loving it anyway. But yeah my Note 4 with the Qualcomm 805 does feel snappier and such.
I think it is worth it. I just picked up one of these today for $80 bucks on Craigslist for my parents. I love it so far, the screen is absolutely gorgeous and it is so easy to hold. The only problem is that text may be too small for my parents to read. I might end up flipping this one and getting a larger iPad Air 2 or Tab S 10.5. I think the next generation of this device is going to be spectacular considering what Samsung has done with the GS6 and GS6E. This needs the updated Exynos 7420 and slimmed down TouchWiz.

Wow, $80! What condition is it in? Good going lol. I know what you mean about the text size tho.... that's one gripe I have, is that bigger devices often have even SMALLER text!! The print on my Note 4 is bigger than on this. But luckily I can root, install xposed, and use the App Settings module to adjust it. Still it isn't as good as if it were fully scaled properly to the screen size. .
It's a great little tablet if you can pick it up on a sale or with unused gift cards for under $300. I rarely shop at Best Buy so the fact I had a couple laying around and an older phone sitting in a drawer they gave me $50 for got me to $255 for a new 32gb model. My company provides AT&T data cards so I have that going as a bonus as well.
It's not the speediest and Touchwiz is Touchwiz, just as Samsung is Samsung, but for a nice little travelling media device it's great, the screen is fantastic, good size too, and it's very light. It's the perfect train/hotel companion if that's what you want it for, like me. I was using my N6 for everything and granted the screen on that is a decent size and looks good but this is better for watching movies or reading, and not all that heavier either.
I wouldn't have paid $450 for it, the original asking price, and even $350 might have made me pause a little, but a couple dusty gift cards and and even dustier iPhone 4s that took forever to charge just so I could make sure it was wiped and we were at $255 which is a nice price brand new for this, at 32gb. Put my 128gb in it, Plex on it, and I'm off.
Need to root it now to get rid of some bloat and put an ad blocker in place.
