Google Cloud - Nexus 7 General

I'm new to android, the Nexus 7 will be my first android device.
Since the N7 is "made for Google Play", what can I do with the Google Play cloud?
Can I upload my own music to the cloud?
Can I upload my own movies to the cloud?
Will the cloud stream my uploaded music or movies to my N7?
I know I can BUY many kinds of content from Google Play store and use it from the cloud but I'm on a limited budget and can't afford to buy music or movies I already own.

you can upload music via google music. as for movies I believe you can stream it by renting it through the playstore, netflix etc. For streaming your own movies you have to figure that out using probably a third party app... as far as I know you can't stream anything from your google drive.

If you have a PC, there's a program from the google music website that can automatically upload your music collection or whatever music you desire to Google Music (up to 20,000 songs). You can then stream it to any of your android devices. You can even save songs from Google Music to your device to be available offline.

Yeah I used google music to upload my entire music collection so I can stream all that. For movies and tv shows I'll either use a friend's Netflix or put them on the device. Thing about cloud storage is that they usually have an upload limit, so you wouldn't be able to upload shows you already have.

Google Music may or may not work for you. For me, it hasn't worked at all. Every time I use Music Manager it will get stuck after a few songs and do nothing or just go really slow. I started it last night and right now its only done 16 songs. That's ridiculous. And I have good bandwidth so I don't know what it is.

Just so you know, Google drive gives you 5gb free storage for docs and images, and you can upgrade to 25gb for $2.50 a month IIRC.
Sent from a Galaxy Nexus in a ZT far, far away!

Movies, you can store on Dropbox or Google Drive and moved to your device when you need them.
Music can be uploaded from your personal collection into the cloud, aka Google Music. All music you buy from the play store will automatically appear in your collection.

You can stream videos directly from Google drive, but it takes forever to buffer and the video quality just isn't there.

I've used dropbox, it takes forever to upload movies to them. My cox isp is very fast downstream but slow upstream.
How about streaming movies from my home computer, I can do that with my iPad using an app called Air Video. It worked good with my iPad (which I just gave to my granddaughter).

Rather than 5 gigs Google docs you could do dropbox and refer your friends or if you don't have any just wait for Dropquest or try to do the HTC dropbox extra gigs OR try box.net, signed up with my iPad INSTANT 50 gigs

Ah, brilliant! I completely forgot about that. One could stream all their media over the Internet from a home computer or something.

I stream all my movies from my NAS to my Prime. Several app's out there for it.

5 minutes before ordering the 8gb I setup Plex to do this from an old desktop pc getting content off my tv media server, to various Android phones and tablets (Acer, Asus) that are already in the house. Works perfectly on those devices, so I hope the Nexus 7 is equally easy.

Anther option for video streaming is subsonic, can be used for movies/music. I belive you have to donate to author for the movie streaming.

The problem with Google Music is that if you root your device and flash a lot of roms...Google music will effectively lock you out for a year...
I learned the hard way.
They limit the amount of active devices and each time you flash a rom, it counts as a new device...
IMO...Those looking for cloud music storage...Google Music is not an option for those who regularly flash roms...

Surely in Google Play Music in your browser under "Settings > Manage My Devices" you should just be able to click unauthorise on everything but your most current rom, yes?

I just set Plex up as well. I must say it is perfect, and will be even better when I get my Nexus! I have an iPhone, so Plex is really the perfect client. I'll use an old PC to stream all my media just like you, and stream it to my Mac, iPhone, and my Nexus! Sweet

What's Your Favorite Music App For Your Xoom?

Hi there. I was just curious as to what music app you can call your main on your Xoom? Is it the stock music app or something else?
Personally my main music app is PowerAMP Premium. It has a sleek interface, many options to configure, a built in equalizer that just makes the songs sound fantastic, an auto download of album art feature, and it allows you to go through your music by the folders you have them in rather than just by album or artist only. It can't get much better than that in my opinion. I only wish it had visualizations much like windows media player on a desktop. Come to think of it... I don't think I have seen a music app on the market that has music visualizations built into it. Is there a such thing right now?
So do you have another music app as your main? Or do you have the same one like I do? Share with us.
poweramp is definitely the must have music app for anyone who loves listening to music on their xoom so many features its worth the money
Personally I use Subsonic on every Android device I own.
Winamp is not bad for free. Album art grabber work's pretty well too

Fully agree. Have all my music on my computer anywhere in the world is just too good. If Google does eventually release their cloud service I may switch, but subsonic is just BOSS. I wouldn't recommended it to any not tech user but this is xda...

I got 20gb from Amazon, so I just uploaded all my music to the cloud and I'm using their cloudplayer. Works nicely, although it did take a few days for me to upload 18gigs of music. I don't have much of an upload speed :-/
Maybe it's just me, but I'm really digging the tablet music app. On my Nexus One I use PlayerPro.
I really don't use the Xoom for music anyways. I did add about 8 or 9 gb of my favorite music but so far, I hardly make use of it. Only time I listen to music is in my car (Nexus One to car stereo), or when I'm in my home office.
Definitely Audiogalaxy. It allows me to stream any of the 7,500+ music files (mostly FLAC) on my home PC to any of my android devices.
been using amazon cloud player on my xoom, easy way to keep most of my library accessible to me no matter where I am. right now I have like 8GB of songs on amazon cloud player, but even so I primarily use my Zune HD and zune pass for most of my music.
If you want a really cool and unique looking app check out cube (superscript 3) It has a very interesting UI and some neat add-ons like new releases and local live shows from artists in your library. But I also have the paid PowerAMP app

how about this... I would like to upload all my music to my website/FTPsite, is there a good app that will stream the music from there?
Pandora for me... I don't have much of a music collection
Power Amp fo sho! Well worth the money!
So far so good! Lots of good opinions and lots of good options. Some are using PowerAMP, some use a syncing method from computer to device, while others don't have much music and just stream from the internet. Good stuff! Keep 'em coming!
On a side note I do love to stream internet radio all the time. My app of choice for streaming Shoutcast stations is called XiiaLive, which was formerly know as DroidLive. I like the feel and look of it. I heard someone say Pandora as well... gotta love the Pandora!

What about subsonic? I havent tested it on a xoom but would be nice if someone tried it, you basically turn your pc into the server and your phone can access any songs in the library over a network connection 3G/wifi

Be careful with Pandora. They harvest and sell personal data:
http://socialtimes.com/pandora-under-investigation-for-sharing-your-personal-information_b55812
Im using Rhapsody. $15 a month unlimited music, 3 mobile devices authorized, (I use it on my OG Droid too) and it shares the library with those devices, and PC. You can download your playlists for offline playback which is great since I don't pay for 3G service on Xoom. Has radio playlists but probably not as good as pandora, but it doesn't steal your identity.
I was using Zunepass, but since this is my main device especially in my car, Zune has become irrelevant. Zune has nicer software, but doesn't have the library media mirroring like Rhapsody.
Not to mention there's no way to use it on an android device.
Since I too own very little music, rental services are great. I got scared by illegal downloads back when my University started identifying students to the RIAA (down and up speeds were unreal on campus, esp. after hours, they eventually capped them after I left) and they were being sued for $3000 per song! I figured the risk wasn't worth the reward.

probably in about 2 years
Not sure on that one. I'm really liking where Google is going with their ecosystem. I didn't expect their store to have this many albums I needed (still looking and buying ) since I don't have mainstream musical tastes. I guess I'm gonna be upgrading to another android phone soon.

Do you still have to upload ur music via music manager? Or does the music manager simply compare your songs to those in its server and comprise your Google music collection based on the songs that match its database? Waiting days to upload thousands of songs just doesn't cut it.

Google would have been much better served to come out with something more along the lines of iTunes, a program you install on your computer and tell it what folder to watch for your music and a few minutes later, there is your 10k song library! Not to mention the stupid music manager issues. The very first time I installed Google Music to my computer I got some stupid "can only use 3 accounts on this machine" error and I couldn't upload my music until I found a workaround.....change the Mac address of my ethernet card. That's pretty weak. I think Google missed the boat with this one.
how fast does the streaming work on verizon's 3g? any hiccups in loading?
Overall, it's a great service. But Google made some mistakes,
1) No matching service.
2) Should have gone at least 25k songs to match iTunes match.
3) Not available outside the U.S.
4) Can't buy songs from your phone... yet.
The sharing and independent artists features are impressive though. And best feature of all.. IT'S FREE.
So now that this is released does anybody know if they will ever have an easy sync like iPhone and iTunes for our Android phones?
Songs you purchase from google don't count towards the 20k song limit. So, that really isn't much of an issue, IMO.
I love how they do carrier billing for tmobile, too. Guess it will come to other carriers soon.

1) a one-time issue when first uploading and only IF you own a lot of music. Just leave PC on overnight once and you're good.
2) iTunes cloud isn't free and then it still eats up all your local storage.
3) Will be soon. Plus you can use a proxy to get around it.
4) New market is being delivered as we speak. Not an issue, just takes a few days to push the app out to 100million+ users with varying phones and networks.
The sharing, artists, g+, is all awesome.
My only issue is that android app is still a little cumbersome and has an occasional issue with shuffle feature and replaying of same song. lol.

Stream with Plex!

Bare wit me I'm tired and going to bed in a few min. I started playing with chrome extensions and turns out Plex works pretty great.
Heres what you do in a nutshell. if you use plex already skip this.
1. download install plex media server and set it up using folders with your videos to add to the que.
2. the above might just work with Myplex.com but I have both. So get a my plex account and link your plex server/files to it.
3. install the plex chrome extension.
4. go to myplex account and your library. que up a video and start playing, cast it to chrome then hit full screen on the plex player. your audio and video will automatically size and cast to the tv. how awesome is that?

no it won't work over tablet as of now. really the op is only making people aware that it is possible to stream all your local content regardless of codec through the browser. then it's just casting that tab, it works alright but is nowhere near flawless and the limit is 720p.
i am really really hoping that it gets integrated to the app itself, but it doesn't seem to be a top priority for the devs. i do think they will get around to it eventually though.
I just read a report this morning that the Plex devs are optimistic that they're app will provide support soon.

I read the same thing and it appears they are only saying that due to a tweet from last week that they had ordered some. In the plex forums the only thing that a developer has said is that they won't start working on it until they have their devices. i do expect them to add the functionality, but i doubt it will be in the next few weeks. they generally aren't the quickest at adding new features.

Yeah, good to know. I'm still hoping that the developer of MX player decides to update the app. That would solve all local streaming issues. Just connect to LAN on ES File Explorer and then stream the video using MX Player.
I emailed the dev from mxplayer and they said a new app would need to be made. Apparently the app can't support both the chrome and android sdk. I'm not sure how accurate that is maybe they have to look into it a bit more. I think there is some confusion since the sdk for the chromecast is chrome sdk not android.

As was said, tablet apps are different, this is glorified mirroring. it's not perfect. it's more or less a proof of concept. I'm sure if you messed with buffer rate it would probably speed things up a lot. I was up all night and just kind of knocked off my seat when I saw audio reencode on the fly. What's kind of crazy is the plex plugin seems to figure out what you want and tries to do it for you. I don't see how the plugin is resizing when you hit full screen mode It's like it's interfacing with chromecast. Like for example if you try to play a avi by dragging it into chrome you get no audio but if you kick it into plex the audio gets turned off on the pc and put to the tv. I think plex guys should have this golden in a short time. as a fairly long time plex user. almost 2 years on roku. they rarely announce their Dev stuff they just one day release it.

[RELEASE] Cloudcast vs. Chromecast!

Hey y'all,
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
I'm excited to share my latest new app in Google Play: CLOUDCAST
Cloudcast lets you play online entertainment from one Android device to another, from anywhere on the planet! Unlike Chromecast, Cloudcast is NOT limited to your Wi-Fi network and you can stream content from ANY website in your device!
The idea was born out of frustration with Chromecast. Google released Chromecast in the summer of 2013 but did not allow independent developers like us to publish apps for it. Since I spent months writing code for their "preview" SDK, I did not want all my work to go to waste. That is when the idea of Cloudcast was born - why not use any Android device as a player instead of Chromecast and not be limited to the Wi-Fi network!
So here it is finally! Hope y'all find the app useful. Let me know what you think. It's a free app, requires latest Google Play & YouTube apps and runs on Android 2.2 or above.
Cheers!

Look around the interwebs. I've seen the MK808 go for as low as $30 recently.
I have had one for about a year now, paid a bit more for it, and am quite happy with it.
Does all the Android stuff well and now even XBMC (13 beta7) runs great on it, using Finless v1.7 ROM and kisses 720p kernel.

Does Google Play work in MK808? I heard others had issues signing in. I'm looking to get one.
The one I used in the Cloudcast demo is Evoke HDI, runs 4.01 but it's a lot slower than even 1.2 GHz phones.

I picked it up in Fry's, but no one sells them anymore.

Sure, when you use Cloudcast you will be installing in two devices - your phone (the browser/remote) and the Android stick (the media player). The free version is for you to test out Cloudcast in your Wi-Fi network or wireless carrier to make sure it's responsive. If you are casting videos < 10 mins then you won't have to upgrade. After 10 minutes the player will stop to give you an option to upgrade or close. You can still continue to use the browser and play locally or cast again. The browser has no time limits. When you upgrade the 10 time limit for the player is removed and the ads at the bottom of the browser are removed as well. Hope it makes sense.
If you are storing movies in a web server in your Windows PC and if you're able to access them from an Android browser (say http://network_pc/movies/...) then you can play and control the movies from your phone to the Android stick. The PC has to stay on and folders shared for the entire movie.
Instead of a web server you can try shared folders, Cloudcast will work if the URL is accessible by a browser (say file:///network_pc/movies...). My Evoke HDI Android box can see shared folders (without a webserver) and it's also possible with a rooted phone. Hope it helps.

The MK808 has had access to Google Play (and Amazon), whether on Stock or custom ROMs, without any issues. There are JellyBean versions out now, but I have mine still on ICS. Good forum for Android sticks (and not-so-mainstream Tablets) is Freaktab.com. Good place to compare the different Android Sticks and set-top-boxes.

Hey y'all,
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
Cheers!

Feels nicer than Cheapcast, but I'm realizing these types of apps can never do paid content, right? I can't do netflix. So these will always be a compliment to chromecast, not replacement.
Or, am I not understanding something? How do I play netlfix, hbo go, hulu plus, etc. I have paying accounts for these. Netflix and HBO Go requires you to play in an app. You can't play in the browser, so that means this won't work, correct?
No paid content yet!

Yes, you're absolutely correct. Cloudcast currently cannot play paid content because there is no user authentication at the player end. Netflix won't play in any mobile browser because of their restrictions. Like you said they want you to use their app!
That said, if the content providers offer a way to authenticate in a web browser (oAuth or login), then we can validate the user at both ends (browser and player). I will look further and see if there are providers that offer that option. Will keep you updated.
I'm sure there are apps out there that "cast" without a Chromecast. If there are enough of us to show content providers the value in offering browser based HTML5 delivery model, then they will soon realize that we all don't need to be locked up in Google's walled garden. This is just a spark and I'm hoping to start a fire!
Calling all indie devs who want to cast without a Chromecast!!
Thank you for this great question. I'll be sure to add this in the FAQs.

New to Chromecast

So I recently bought a chromecast and now I am looking for apps to use with it. Avia caught my eye so I will try to buy it however are there any free or useful apps to use with Chromecast. My chromecast isnt rootable so I guess I will use officially supported apps only. My main purpose for chromecast was to stream locally stored mp3s on my phone to my TV and home theather so are there any other apps that will do the job. Also do suggest any free alternatives or ways to get Avia support for free since google wallet isnt supported in my country even though paying 3 dollars for an app isnt much trouble.

I'm not aware of any free apps, maybe Google play music ? I don't know.
Avia does support streaming mp3s and stuff , I've used it myself from my dlna server.

Well yeah I am aware of Avias capabilities and have also used Google Music but Google Music manager isnt supported for my country yet again so I cant use that. Avia seems like the best option for me but because it requires me to use a google wallet account it may be impossible to buy it in my country.

You could subscribe to plex pass through their website , which doesn't use Google play and the app is free to download, but you need a plex pass account.
4usd a month or 75usd lifetime.

FWIW, Plexing to Chromecast will be available to non-pass members once it is out of early access stage.

Oh, only saw him state that he can't use Google wallet, they accept credit cards too, or do they region lock those too? Maybe contact Plex and see what they can do, they are usually pretty accommodating.
I'm currently using Plex Media Server on my desktop to host my music (app is free for the PC) and then use Avia on my phone or tablet to access the Plex Media Server and stream to my chromecast on my home theater. Its a good work around until chromcast features are free on Plex.

If he can't use wallet he may issues with aVia too...Doesn't it require an In App purchase to get the Chromecast support?
I'm betting that purchase goes through Google...
Oh yea good point Asphyx!

Avia is on Amazon App Store too, and that version should use Amazon's in-app purchase rather than Google Wallet.
Can you get Google Wallet to activate using a Google Play redemption code, rather than credit card, or is it completely unsupported for your country?
Seems the first purchase (even a $0.00 purchase) requires adding some funds either through credit card or Google Play redemption code.
I can use amazon but Avia requires an in app purchase which is only available through google wallet. And Plex is the same story since its only available on the app store and not on amazon. I hate that google restricts regions like this. This is exactly the same reason why I had to buy my Nexus 5 for about $500 rather than for $450 through the google store.

Uninstall the Play Store version and install the Amazon version. The Amazon version uses Amazon's in-app purchase which does not require Google Wallet. It would be it required Google Wallet it would be fairly pointless to have it on Amazon.

I see "Plex for Android ($4.99)" on Amazon.
Yeah I guess when I searched the entire Amazon store I didnt find it, I looked harder and found it in the dedicated section for apps. Will give it a try though. However which one do you think would be better. I did manage to find a way to get Avia as well, through a friend's credit card living in the US.

It really depends on what your media library looks like.
In actuality they aren't head-to-head competitors much at all.
Avia is better if...
All your media is in a Chromecast-compatible format, or you are willing to convert it to a Chromecast-compatible format
You have a lot of media on your phone/tablet that you want to play and is Chromecast-compatible
You have a DLNA server that is not a Plex server and you want to cast content from it
You don't want to have a media server running (you don't have a server, or a system you're willing to have running for media playback)
Plex is better if...
Your media is not in a Chromecast-compatible format or you have no idea what that means
You have no clue what transcoding means, or you know what transcoding means, but you are unwilling to transcode your media library to make it Chromecast-compatible
You are okay with running Plex Media Server on a system for media playback
You have multiple playback devices (Roku, etc) that you use
Note that Chromecast support for Plex is currently limited to PlexPass members, but is planned to be released to the general public later.
I could be mistaken, but I believe someone said they use Avia to cast from Plex Media Server?
That actually made things really easy, Avia is the choice for me since I mostly only play mp3s and have my library stored on my Nexus 7 or 5. I wanted to ask, if I use a friend's credit card from the US and buy the app on my account would I be able to use the app outside the US or would I be able to download it on my device while staying in my country which doesnt support google wallet services.

Well if your only trying to stream content on the unit I do not see how location restrictions apply.
Apps aren't usually the reason for locations restrictions, The Content that the App makes available is usually why it's here but not there!
and it should be pointed out to everyone who complains about Google not making things available outside of US that is usually because of Import restrictions the EU has enacted not because Google doesn't want to make it available or can't!
So if you buy the App I see no reason why where you use it is going to be an issue especially since your intention is to stream your own content.

Yes this is what I do currently until the Plex app's chromecast feature works for free.
