ICS update ... can anyone help fix some of my 'issues'? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

Got the Rogers ICS update finally!
HOWEVER ... afterwards here are a few issues I'm having:
Reduced Battery Life (assuming it has to do with issue #3)
Reduced Reception (Used to get -75 dBm, and now get -95dBm - sitting in the SAME spot. No change in towers, or tower locations.)
Would really like to be able to shut off "Background Data" like I could before. (i.e. in GB, Menu > Settings > Accounts & synch, uncheck Background Data)
WiFi is Weak ... I sit 4 feet from my "N" router, my laptop gets 100% signal, the phone 50-60%
LanucherPro works, Launcher Pro Paid version works, BUT ... I can't use the calendar widget.
I've "made do" with some creative widget-ing. (Used the built in calendar, and adjust the size (5 icons wide, 4 icons tall), and have a smaller 2 tall by 3 wide month calendar widget below) (how do I have 5 columns, and 6 rows? The paid version of Launcher Pro allows me to set that - and it works AWESOMELY - no problem with the screen.)
Too much Rogers Bloat (if I wanted UrMusic, 1 Contacts, 1 Number, Games etc), and the stupid Twitter app. If I wanted it, I'd download it.
Some good things:
LIKE the new font - clock, menu's etc are a non-bold font.
Like the Task Manager (hold home, swip an app to close it.)
Like the blue highlights under the Power Control Bar (used to be green)
LOVE the updates to Gmail and WebKit browser.
Phone seems for the most part, "snappier" - as if the CPU and GPU are being utilized properly.
And a single "side by side" of GB and ICS on the same device:

Well, if you want to get rid of the Rogers bloatware - root your phone and use Titanium Backup to clear them out.
I noticed about that with WiFi, but i did a reset and it works well now for me. As per the signal, mine actually improved.

Easiest / Safest way to root with ICS?
When I had Gingerbread and an HTC Panache, when I tried to run Gingerbreak, it caused com.android.phone to loop crash, requiring a full reset of the phone... which I don't want to do again.

Reduced battery life most likely has to do with the fact that you have Advanced Task Killer on 4.0.3 and not on 2.3.5. Get rid of that crap IMMEDIATELY. It's been unnecessary since Froyo dropped aeons ago.

I followed these set of instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416836
Mind you, im still running the stock rogers ICS with an unlocked bootloader and rooted.
Its quite easy really, just follow his instructions.
And +1 getting rid of Task killers. Its great that i dont need them anymore and ICS has done quite well in managing memory.

I'm a hardware guy, not software. Doing something like what you listed, is near impossibly for me to do... due to many reasons.

The superguide is actually really good if followed exactly. If you have any questions about any of the steps, PM me, I'll try to help!

It might seem a little daunting but I can assure you it isn't that bad. For your purposes you only need to do steps 1 and 4. I've spent a lot of time making the directions thorough for those who haven't done anything like this before (for example, even explaining how to open up a command prompt).

Indeed atk is just unnecessary, it's android not windows, android is supposed to keep your memory 80% full for caching purposes. Using atk will slow down your system and decrease battery life

Let me also point out, that I have "Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder" ... just LOOKING at the instructions gives me a feeling of dread. I paid a guy a few years ago, to unlock my Moto Razr V3I because it had be disassembled. (Now, I build computers, but the parts are ALL the same for the most part... the most complicated thing I've done recently was install a HDD in an Asus G53Sw which requires removing the keyboard, wrist pad, and 15 screws. *L*)

Hey i got add too man. Im not sure if it still works but there is an all in one windows gui in the stick is, I'd this is all to difficult that might be your best bet. If it doesn't still work someone please correct me!
Overall though using adb and rooting isn't too hard. I'd say go through now and read through it, then read through it again. Then when it comes time to root read the instructions again and follow them step by step.

Then do a step and take 10 minute breaks in between each.
You already have ICS, so that shaves off a step.
- Do step 1 in the superguide to unlock your bootloader, or unlock the bootloader using the all-in-one toolkit
- Do step 4 in the superguide (it really doesn't take long... it consists of flashing a recovery from adb and flashing a zip in recovery, won't even take you ten minutes and I'd like to think the instructions are pretty detailed)

Damn... A lot of people are having issues with it. Follow step 4 in the guide in my signature. Except when you are doing the fastboot code from your command prompt, do that a few times. So do it once, reboot, unplug and repeat that a couple more times to make sure everything CWM related is gone. Then move on and flash the zip in step 4 to perm root.

DROID 4 Utility Pre-Release [WINDOWS]

UPDATED PAGE!
Back with another utility... this time pre-release Droid 4! I haven't seen a Droid 4 board yet so I guess I have to put this under General.
There are no fastboot files as of writing this (2/11/2012) but once they come out I will be making a full version that includes fastboot restore. For now, only a few MB compared to GB full.
Includes Root function thanks to Dan Rosenberg's motofail exploit.
It is the only reason we can have a working utility root!
Donate to his fund for the Red Cross here
Note to all: I am giving control of the Droid 4 Utility to skylarmb (Although I will still be very involved )
Don't use Safestrap yet!
Hashcode is making a D4 version very soon!

And if anyone could do a system pull and send me a copy over a file-share site like mediafire or minu.us that would be very helpful to me. Thanks
EDIT: Nvm. I got one.
What do the different options do? I went from having a OG Droid, with cyanogenmod which was super straight forward to this and I have no idea what the fastboot or bootstrapping does.
If you still need the /system pull I can send you the link over PM.

Bootstrap is the way to get into a CWM-like recovery for the Razr. I have no way to test this on a D4, seeing as I don't have one.
ICS root works on the GSM ICS leak, so it may work for ours too.
Boot into Fastboot from Debugging (go directly to fastboot mode from the phone turned on and in USB Debugging mode)
Boot into Motorola Recovery from Debugging (same as above but into Moto Recovery)
ADB Shell (for more manually inclined users)
Reboot phone from Debugging
I have ADB 1.0.26 (at least that is what it says when I go to Start>Run>CMD>and type in adb.
Is there anything else I need to get the phone rooted? Any other drivers or anything along those lines. I know the phone needs to be in development mode, but I want to make sure all of the other software on the computer end is up-to-date since I've had a G1, Mytouch Slide 3G, G2, and Droid 3 before picking up this Droid 4.

I think most people use the one they use with CM.
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
This one I think. You have to install via the APK.
Please correct me if there is a different one of this is the wrong one. I'm actually curious myself.
I have no technical explanation for this, but...
DO NOT RUN THE .BAT FILE AS ADMINISTRATOR.
If I right-click the .bat file and click "run as administrator" in Windows 7, everything would appear to work (at least to the splash screen), but when I selected option 1 it would come back with a bunch of lines of "the system cannot find the path specified."
When I just double clicked the .bat file it ran properly and am now set.
Again, I have no idea why it worked this way, but it did...at least on my system. Windows 7 64-bit here, btw.

I was wondering the same thing, if the RadioCom Tether Hack worked. But I tried to enable the tether on the phone, and Verizon pops up a message as long as I have a $29.95 data plan then I can tether. So I went forward and enabled teather since I have the unlimited plan, and all seems well. I went to My Verizon web and checked to see if I'm being charged, or if another service has been added, and I see non. So I will try using this for now.
Thank you XDA for putting my Utility on the front page =D
So I used the utility to root my droid 4, but I did not install the safe strap. At this point I do not plan on doing any flashing or even heavy customization. I just wanted root for install of wifi tether and titanium backup. Is there a need for safestrap before I plan on getting into flashing etc?

bricked my droid 4... for now...
I'm pretty pissed at my self... I softbricked my droid 4 days after i got it... now im just waiting for the fastboot restore option... I'll be checking back here every day now lol... does anyone know when it will be released, or is it even a guarantee it'll be released?
How did this happen? Best of luck on getting it fixed!

Well i had success using the droid razr utility before this one came out (of course cant fastboot recovery with it tho ), so i thought maybe the EternityProject WebTop Mod would work, so i tried installing it through adb and i went to do the 2nd step and found out webtop was disabled... I figure i did something wrong... so i went to restore the backup i made and all of the sudden its stuck in AP fastboot saying flash failure.
This really sucks cause i bought the lapdock 500 to go with the phone. Now I have 2 bricks sitting on my desk, until further notice.
I since i have insurance on this phone I am putting the phone up for sale on craigslist with an hdmi cable so someone can enjoy a small android tab and webtop if they want it for 120... anyone think I'll be able to sell it before the fastboot recovery is released?
Quick question....If I do a system pull and then try to throw a few things from UOT kitchen like battery percent.....would that work without the files being deodexed?

Note ? Bricked?

Hi,
I am from india was updating after i got a push message today, phone is already running the Latest ICS ROM. today it downloaded a 7mb update after which phone restarted for installing the update, the update was installed after which phone restarted again since then phone has the word "SAMSUNG" flashing.. I tried to wait for more than half an hour. But it is at the same point...
I tried to go to the hardreset menu "volup+menu+power" it does not go into that menu too. An android symbol comes later it goes away n finally it comes to the same point of flashing "SAMSUNG"
Please help, lots of data on phone memory
Did you try volume up or volume down + power + home?
Have you tried to get into recovery and just wipe cache and dalvik (not factory reset/data)?
If it doesn't work, you will have to try to Odin (if you can get in download mode). If that doesn't work and you don't have a triangle, take it to Samsung and tell them their OTA update messed it up (which sounds like it did).
You need to enter the recovery ( Volume UP + Home + Power ) and clear cache. Do not select "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" as it may brick your phone. It it doesn't come up, try taking out the battery for a few seconds, and then try again - i see no reason why it wouldn't work.
If it won't work, try entering download mode ( Volume DOWN + Home + Power ) and flash a stock GB ROM via Odin - you can find all stock ROMs in dr. Ketan's guide in Development forum for Galaxy Note. After that you can clear cache and boot. Once back on GB you should do a factory reset, but since you probably need the data on your phone, clearing cache should be enough to boot.
Ah glad that i have company.sad at the same time!! Even i have the same problem after the 7mb OTA update. The andriod process closes often and hangs the phone.
The phone was literally unusable. Hence i tried to install custom gingerbread rom on it. Now its almost completely bricked.
How irresponsible is samsung to roll these things out without testing it thoroughly.

hopefully we can save some.
I am not sure what to do now. Any idea ?

"Honey, I screwed my Note"
Till yesterday I had my Galaxy Note on Android ICS official release. It was rooted too and everything was super smooth. Then I got an OTA update available message and I was hesitant at first whether it will remove my root. It didn't look like much of an update since only the kernel version was changed from LP8 to LPA. But after much consideration I went ahead with the update. It looked fine. After the update finished, the phone restarted and updated all apps. I was happy root did not go off too. Then I ran Titanium backup and took a backup of all my apps. Everything was good. But I left my phone at night and morning it was turned off. The battery had drained completely. I recharged it, but now it didn't start at all. I tried removing the external SD card thinking that some problem might have occurred with all the news about ICS and eMMC problem on Note. But nothing worked. The phone would start and Samsung logo would come but it gets stuck there for more than an hour. I read on XDA that I should try flashing to stock GB and I downloaded it and tried flashing with Odin. But it failed too. I removed the USB connection from the PC and now the phone wouldn't even boot, and I mean it's completely off. I tried holding the power button, power+volume_up+home, and power+volume_down+home. I kept holding for two minutes and still nothing. And now when I connect it to charger using the wall outlet charger, it does not charge. And if I connect to USB also, nothing happens. Tried running Odin but it doesn't detect anything.
And to add to my woes, I am currently onsite at USA and since I have the International N7000 model that I had brought from India, they wouldn't service it. I guess I am royally "bricked". :crying:
What I am still wondering is if it's really possible to mess up the phone so bad it wouldn't even show a single sign of life!
I have the same issue .. anyone around the whole of xda know what to do ? I updated to ics then rooted it for the first time. Did not installs any roms nothing. Just rooted to access titanium backup.
Recently I updated the same as it showed up and after that I cannot access my contacts or phone or call list .
Other than that everything works fine, luckily for me it's not bricked.
I tried killing the process still didn't make a difference.
I can call ppl by searching through gesture search though but doesn't give an option to msg.
What should I try ? I don't want it to turn into a brick though, any proper answers would be really appreciated.
IM posting the various screenshots I took after this whole problem started. Hope someone can help......

If you know how to use pc odin then you can make new instalation. It will solve your problem.
If you dont know how to use it. Go to samsung service center and let them install it.
I rooted it using Odin, if there is a link on how to make that new installation I can do it. I don't wanna try something on my own and get stuck
In case if I do take it to the service I will have to unroot it won't I ?
Now that's another dilemma, what if it's bricked then :-( ..
IM so damn confused now
Gimme one solid thing to do and I will now..
I tried recovery mode, wiping the cache, no go.. Still gives the error..

Mate best thing is go to download mode and flash a gb rom in pc odin without wiping anything when on ics..... if ur able to flash gb then u have no probs, if flashing stops at factory img then ur in a soup....
Mate if you are so much scared then just try to copy contacts.apk from any ICS rom into system/app folder and assign correct permission and reboot you will be ok.

If your Note is Bricked! then it won't open...
You read my Story.
Theres a lot of Samsung Service in Philippines but different owner. I went to Samsung last 2 days. Then they asked me What Happen? Im so stupid i accidentally told them that i flashed it using ODIN. They told my Warranty is Void because of ODIN. They gonna charge me for Changing Motherboard. I said no way i will pull out my Note.
Next Day i went to other Samsung Service Center i prepared myself then They asked me again what happen? This time i'm careful. I told them that i just Restore Factory settings. Then they check my Warranty. Then they said Okay you call us tom if already fixed.
Then that afternoon i received SMS from Samsung that my Note is fixed already ready for pick up. That's it. No payment... One thing i have a 2 costom binaries there. because i rooted it.
If you have a warranty do not say i flash it thru ODIN. ODIN. ODIN.

What IM trying now is flashing another ROM.
Downloading Rocket ROM, will check in awhile now.

Guys ! You have installed the OTA update on a Stock ROM which was rooted.
I think all guys have to cool down and read this !
You are having issues because you have installed OTA on a rooted ROM.
It has most probably nothing to do with EMMC bug or Hard Brick.
I also donot recommend flashing via Mobile ODIN for ICS as someone has suggested.
To solve your problem ,
1) ODIN Method
a) go to Download Mode (Power Button + Vol down + Home)
b) Flash the ICS ROM posted in Dr.Ketan Thread in the PDA
Remember that options are ticked according to this image.
Donot tick repartition.
You can root it by Heading to Dr Ketans thread.
2) CWM Method (Custom Firmware)
a) go to Download Mode (Power Button + Vol up + Home)
b) Flash the ROM close to LPA without any Reset or Wiping.
This will endup with a custom ROM Clea Note (LPA Rooted)
Too late to check that..
I reinstalled the stock ics ROM using mobile Odin pro. Works fine now... Yipee..
I can access the contacts and phone options too ..
And for some reason it does not show the yellow triangle even though it used to everyone before..
But previously I lost the phone and contacts button on the main screen ..
How do I get it back to how it was ?
And why is there no file manager still ?
I see only 3 icons now instead of 5...

- Windows Instructions
Extract .zip to its own folder on the Desktop.
Install the required drivers. The folder with the drivers is called "Drivers [WINDOWS ONLY]" and is included in the Utility folder.
Double click the ".bat" file. This will be called "WindowsUtility.bat" the image is just for reference.
- Mac & Linux Instructions
Extract the .zip to any folder you like, the /Downloads/ or /Desktop/ folder should work just fine.
Open a Terminal window. (On Mac: Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
Learn your 'sudo' password. This is almost always your Admin password on a Mac computer. On Linux you should already know what this is, its yours account password if your account is an admin as well.
Type the following code into the Terminal Windows, places where it says ***DRAG HERE*** are telling you to simply drag the folder there. For example: cd ***DRAG FOLDER HERE*** then press 'Enter' after each line.
cd ***DRAG UNZIPPED UTILITY FOLDER HERE***
chmod +x ./LinuxMacUtility.sh
bash ./LinuxMacUtility.sh
You will be asked for your sudo password at least once in the Utility process, so make sure you followed the instructions to learn it.
Functions of the DROID RAZR M Utility 1.10:
1 Fastboot Restore (JB 4.1.1 Official Software)
2 Root (motofail2go by Dan Rosenberg) for ICS 4.0.4/JB 4.1.1
3 Install Voodoo's OTA Rootkeeper App.
Number 1 Explained -- This option requires your phone be in AP Fastboot mode. It will flash the official Jellybean firmware to your device.
Number 2 Explained -- This is Dan Rosenberg's DROID RAZR M 4.0.4/4.1.1 exploit called 'motofail2go'. This option requires your phone to be booted normally, with USB Debugging enabled.
Number 3 Explained -- This option requires your phone to be booted normally, with USB Debugging enabled. It will install Voodoo's OTA Rootkeeper App.
Remember, do not run this utility unless your phone is at 100% battery OR you have bought yourself one of Team Black Hat's Factory-Style Programming Adapters.
Thanks to Djrbliss for motofail2go!

just got mine yesterday, rite before the above method was posted, i can assure you that its really pretty painless process even without that method, one problem i did have was while rooting, i could not get the app to work on my xp machine for nothing, xferred the files to my win7 machine and it worked the first time, i am assuming it had something to do with my administration rights on the xp. so i dont even try anything on it anymore(might save you a hassle if you still have a xp machine around). safestrap v3.12 was the only version i could get to work, rsd lite v6.14 was the only version i could get to work, and eclipse is the only rom i have tried so far so i am not much help there. also remember the battery is not removable so i havent even dared to try anything without 100% charge. good luck and grats on your new phone!
p.s if you havent read yet the internal storage is very low, so you will eventually want to install your custom rom over your stock rom slot in safestrap. if you need advice on doing it lemme know, there is a few posts about it(jumbled in the middle of hundreds of posts) if you can find a few.
Thanks for the tips. I have seen the other methods here on XDA, however this is the only one I can find that works native under Linux. (I've been sober for 6 years and counting) no windows machines in my house. Well, maybe a VM or two I wasn't planning on ROMing (just root) it until a reliable bootloader unlock is made available for the retail version. I like the idea of safestrap, it's defiantly in the right direction. But personaly I much rather have only a single ROM on my phone, something about "dual boots" just bothers me. But I digress...
Extremely simple and great tool. Thanks!

Well, all this is, is a utility to make installing the official JB firmware on your Motorola Droid Razr M easier, then root it using the exploit, and finally install the Voodoo OTARootkeeper apk file. You can do each of these steps manually, this is just for convenience - sort of a 1-stop-shop, if you will.

Just tried the script going from stock ics and it worked great. Also digging the Batman theme.
Much appreciated for putting it together.
Not sure what happened here but options 2 and 3 worked fine on Mac and PC. Could not get the restore to work on either os, eventually used RSD and the firmware file that came with the utility. Mac failed to push system and PC would not recognize the option as a valid cmd.
How long is the flashing supposed to take? Its been going on for about an hour and half, still says writing 'sb12'. sb11 was succesful so im too scared to yank it out and start again. Bricking it is the last thing i want.
I dont know what im doing wrong. Connected fully charged usb debugging and i press space bar to continue and it closes. Odd anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Guys
The tool did not work for me last night at all. Ran is as admin, and it always just said that fastboot was an unrecognized command, then said complete without doing anything.
so, I just used RSD lite in that .zip and flashed the stock rom manually. Worked great fater 2 tries (no idea why the first 2 failed, but they did).
Does this work on 4.1.1? I'm defiantly missing something

Yes. Having issues?

Oh, well I will try it not as an admin sometime. I extracted the .zip, and ran it. No file movement at all. it would see the phone, but then cmd windows would say that 'flashboot' was an invalid command about 7-8 times and ask me to press any key again. And then nothing, then any key again. No idea why, but I ran it as instructed except the admin thing. I've used a couple of tools like this in the past (something similar existed for my Droid X), so I don't know what the issue was.
Yes I ran it from the same folder. Must have been something on my end that caused the issue, but I got where I needed to be.

You can't use it from 4.1.2 the security increased. I would have found out but not a single viable tester apparently follows me on twitter who still has a locked bootloader.

I am testing this now with new 4.1.2 tools.

[Q] Updating 5.0 to 5.1

Just a quick question. How would one update from 5.0.1 to 5.1 if they are on stock rooted rom with a few tweaks such as volume mod, hotspot enabled, and show percentage mod? I guess I am more worried about erasing everything and then re-installing.
Thanks

Flash the stock system.img to remove root. If you are unencrypted, flash the stock boot.img. And if you have TWRP, flash the stock recovery.img.
This is if you want to take the OTA. Or you can wait until someone makes a flashable zip.
Instructions are here, under Method 2 (only flash those files I noted above. No need to flash all of them.) > http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008

Just to correct what may be an error here...
If you are unencrypted and flash the stock boot.img, you will be encrypted on boot. So if you are unencrypted and wish to remain so, it would make sense to flash immediately whatever custom kernel you use to not force encryption.
But IMHO this is pretty much the best way as stated.
Flash system.img, boot.img and radio.img via fastboot individually, flash root (SuperSU) from recovery and boot. No wipes etc.
If you're going to follow method 2, you might as well just do it straight with the 5.1 image and call it good.
So just going from stock rooted 5.0.1 to stock rooted 5.1 is the factory reset needed? I know in the past it wouldn't have been, but lollipop changed a lot with this stuff so I'm not sure.
Can't we simply sideload the update using Wugfresh or something and re-root? I have taken OTAs on my OnePlus One and all it does is remove root. I don't understand why I'd have to completely reinstall and wipe just to take an OTA.

You cannot sideload an OTA on lollipop if you have modified anything in system, including adding root. We also discourage using toolkits for those who do not understand how to do the steps without one, because when those people get stuck and need help, we cant simply help and give instructions.. We have to teach them EVERYTHING they didn't bother to learn first - which is a result of using toolkits as shortcuts instead of as aids to existing knowledge

If you fastboot flash the stock system.img, you will be good to install the OTA, with no factory reset necessary. But EVERYTHING must be stock. Recovery, and encrypted kernel/boot.img.

If your phone is back to 100% stock (everything, including recovery and encrypted kernel/boot.img), then you can ADB sideload the OTA. But be sure to do some research, so you know what you are doing.
Not to be rude to the veterans (I too know how to flash things manually) but you guys do realize the wug fresh toolkit does have an option to flash stock without wiping right?

Yeah, all I did was unlock the bootloader and run one of the automated rooting things, I think from chainfire, but I could be wrong. I didn't mess with unencryption or custom recoveries (yet).
Rooting is so easy. It requires one fastboot command after you're bootloader is unlocked(either to flash a recovery or boot into recovery temporarily) then you just use the SuperSU zip and boom you're rooted. That's why I love Nexus phones so much.

Not trying to start and arguement but toolkits are here to help for people with busy lives. I know how to do both methods, but using a toolkit isnt all bad if directions are followed. Just about every device out there has some kind of toolkit similiarities.
nexus has its own toolkit, htc 1 m8 has a paid software that unlocks the device, heck even the newest moto E has a toolkit. Just because there are some developers on here that dont like toolkits doesnt mean they are bad. I agree though if people mess up bad and screwed up using a toolkit thats not the toolkits fault. Its user error. Toolkits are a good thing to use if used properly. I encourage everyone I know to use toolkits. I also make sure to tell them to read it twice then go.

Like i said, its fine if you know both methods.
I don't care if someone has a busy life or not. If they don't have time to spend 10 minutes reading and following my fastboot thread, well they shouldn't really be rooting. Further more, how selfish is it for someone who thinks they're too busy to learn the basics to then have to fall back on other people who may also have busy lives for hand holding through something that should be simple just because they wanted to take a small shortcut to save them 3 minutes? Learn the basics and then you don't waste our time trying to not only help you but also teach the basics - which are essentials.
My point isn't that toolkits break things (although sometimes they do) or even user error using the toolkit... My point is if something else unrelated goes wrong and we say "fastboot flash x to fix" and they then reply " what's fastboot?" And then we have to teach the basics whilst they're frustrated and panicking. That is NOT the best time to learn... Or teach
Driving a car requires a licence. Sure, you can fake a licence but I don't want to have to explain what a car is if you need me to tell you how to start the car. Especially not whilst you're late for a job interview

So your saying if no one uses your fastboot method thread that they are in the wrong. I understand and agree that all users should learn fastboot, but to push your thread on everyone and then to say they shouldnt root at all if they dont is selfish. Theres always more than one method to do a task. Just because one is easier than the other doesn't make it bad.
best example and this still irks me is I knew a developer that had a thread for the ruu on the m8. he found out if you flash it twice(the same file) that it will clean install, and since it was "easier" other developers told him to take it down because its taking away people from using their method. Again i am not saying your in the wrong, but at the same time there is always more than one method, and like myself if I mess up(which i have) before I ask anything I get on here and search and search. I never ask because if ever there is a mistake done its usually the users fault. I have used toolkits for years, and still knowing how to do fastboot i prefer toolkits and never had any issues because I read the directions the minimum of 2 times. This is XDA there is always more than one way to do something. We need to support @WugFresh and his work he has done. Again dont take this to heart I am not bashing you in anyway. All I am saying is we all have options and any member on here should know that if u make a mistake which we all have at one point. We Search first (number one rule on XDA). The answers are always here in XDA. Youtube to an extent also has google back up videos on how to do stuff to. I follow @Tomsgt aka root junky on youtube, and google plus. He does these things.

You know that's not what I meant. My fastboot thread / any fastboot thread - its not relevant. I know mine describes everything a user needs to know and its succinct so it doesn't take long g to read. Its an example!
Basically learn fastboot. I'm not pushing anything on anyone except morals. Don't be selfish and we'll all get along. Don't and well, people will be less inclined to help.

You're still completely missing the point. I didn't say toolkits are bad. I said lack of knowledge is bad.
And actually on a nexus, a toolkit isn't really easier at all.
I don't really want to get into a drawn out discussion about this.. I hope you understand where I'm coming from. Use toolkits if you know both methods, but if you don't, go the (ever-so-slightly) longer way the first time so that you're not a drain on our time and helpfulness later on in life, because you didn't learn the basic essentials when you needed to.

so basically you could flash the stock 5.0.1 system.img, take the update, then root again (assuming the root method doesn't change, or using a new method after one is found?)

instead of going back to stock and then flashing OTA, why not just flash the new system.img directly?
I was big in to rooting and custom roms for both my Epic 4g Touch (s2) and my M7. I just never got in to it with my M8, and this is my first nexus device, so it's been a while, and the process is a little new/different for me. I've used toolkits in the past, but also had to adb/fastboot my way back in to a working rom at times as well. I just used a script to root the nexus 6, and so I didn't use fastboot. I knew it was simple for nexus devices usually, but didn't know specifics.

Problem after playing with Galaxy Note8 ROOT [SNAPDRAGON]

I rooted my phone as the title says. I ran into a few complications but nothing major. After I got used to verything I went on to download a few things. One of those things was V4A and I set it up, installed the drivers, etc. Something weird happened and it turned all my audio into a slower audio. It changed my entire phone sound. The boot animations to text messages. Well, I tried to fix it and couldn't figure it out. Nobody seemed to have the problem before so I took matters into my own hands and decided I was gonna try and go back to stock. That failed badly. I figured reflashing with odin would maybe reset my phone but I think it soft bricked it. It wont boot up. I'm sure its an easy fix I just need help. I don't know how to get back to stock and its really bothering me. If anyone knows wtf to do I would seriously appreciate the help. I have no idea how to get the stock files either. I think I downloaded them but I'm not sure.
Not the answer you are looking for but this should be in Q&A
What Note8? Tmobile..Att?

What Odin are you using? If your using Prince Comsy Odin I think there are issues when trying to flash stock. Try using different Odin to flash stock firmware. Im on At&t flashed the unlocked firmware several weeks ago, Its so much better then the At&t bloated firmware

Not sure if you're still needing help, as far as the issue after flashing V4A....prior to that while doing the root process did you do the 3rd step? (The fsck.ext4 push with adb)? If not that probably explains the weirdness you experienced.
As far as the phone's current state, are you able to boot into download mode (volume down+bixby button+power)? If yes that is a good sign take a breath of relief. If it boots to "upload mode" just long press and hold the same 3 buttons on phone and you'll be in download mode.
If none of that is "working" you can also try to repair phone with Samsung Kies program. Google or youtube it to get an idea of how the software works then give that a shot.

Just a heads up. You probably just need to boot recovery and erase userdata...

I'm sorry sir but.....i think we lost him.... your 2hrs too late, smh and he hasnt responded, probably stuck on infinity bootloops. There should be XDA first responders for situations like this.... i remember being stuck like this a couple times and when i would write a question in the question section and NO ONE would respond in time and so because im stuck and need my phone i just start flashing shet all over and have hard bricked 3 galaxy s8 pluses thank God for jtag, 200 each but worth it, don't want my parents to find out... but yeah the OP seems to be a goner, then XDA wo der why we post in the general section instead

I'm alive and well lmao. I appreciate the concern! (sarcasm) I actually have everything figured out. I had started a download several hours ago and it finished about an hour ago. Luckily it was the right download. My phone is in working condition. I will root again though. I just wont mess with at bs this time lol.

Mind sharing how to do that step? I never got around to it because I thought my phone was working perfectly after the root.

Woooowwwww the man himself lol. Honestly I did that. I didn't realize how messed up it was until I did the flashing again and noticed my phone not booting up. I just wanted to fix the sound problem. I did get everything up and running again though I'm going to root again and do that step with the ext file or whatever it is. I didn't do that after the first time I rooted because I was under the impression that my phone was fine. Boy was I wrong. I appreciate the hard work put into this for Snapdragon users. Its nice knowing android still has something to offer. I actually left apple because the pretty much out lawed jailbreaking. Oh well. Thanks!

The way I've done it is copy fsck.ext4 to the phone where you can find it. Navigate (use root explorer) to the file location and copy (or move) it to the folder (/tmp)
On first run root explorer will open on the systems "root directory" scroll down that initial page to /tmp and place file there.
After that (assuming you have adb installed on pc) connect phone and launch the cmd terminal. Then type "adb shell"
followed by "su" (no quotes) for either command. Then enter the info in the OP of the SamFail thread line by line hitting enter after each line.
Other option is to run a terminal app on your phone and enter the same commands from the thread.
Once you get to the end where you are told to enter "y" do so followed by "a" for the next question proceeding. (Will make more sense when you see it)

Thanks for the firmware. I flashed my phone with it and it's a hell of a lot faster. Is their anyway I can root with those files? I want to root but I don't want all the bloatware. It made my phone so laggy
Yes you can root.

Which files do I need to flash? Did you root on that? I'm debating since my phone is so fast right now.

Enjoy your phone as-is. And if down the road you have a "reason" to root consider it then.
