Motorola says Atrix HD bootloader will be locked (BUT....) - Motorola Atrix HD

So as it turns out, Motorola will also be locking down the bootloader for the upcoming Atrix HD....big surprise, eh?
However, something in this article is a bit noteworthy:
"...our goal is still to provide a way to unlock the bootloaders on our devices to those who wish to do so, more details to come."
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...e-a-way-to-unlock-to-those-who-wish-to-do-so/

There's one guy around here that has a sig that says "Motorola lied I'm still locked" or something similar... he's got the right idea about it, and words mean nothing and neither do their broken promises so, until we see and can actually make use of a real honest to goodness unlocked bootloader, Motorola can stick their words someplace, you get to choose where.

4 words: Too little too late!

Those are cheap lies from motorola. They played that scenerio very well with the XT910. Don't ever buy a phone motorola with locked bootloader with the hope of it could be unlocked in the future.

+1. I for one wont ever buy a Moto phone. That's the only form of complaint that they will eventually listen to.

The 4G wasn't officially unlocked when the Atrix 2 was released. We got lucky on that one...hence the cheesecake checking for the Atrix 2 in hopes that lightning strikes twice.

This is a tough one:
I REALLY wanna upgrade my phone, but I'm not sure if I want to wait to be able to do what I can now..

Its bull we heard it all with the defy and the atrix and then the razr
Don't forget when they said that about the razr they then released the dev version so you had to buy another phone.
I'm done with moto, their excellent hardware cant make up for their bad software hence why I brought a Samsung GS3 the only thing I can hope for this device is that they stick to their word(not gonna happen) or that if your lucky devs like quarx and eppy from the defy get helping here.

Moto dropped the ball long ago....quality? In what? Superior Screens? To who? HTC has done some dumb crap too but have way out built Moto in the quality field....Samsung has leveled the entire industry with their technology. Moto does nothing except pack into their devices COMPARABLE hardware to other manufacturers....innovate nowhere....they amaze no one....from form to the most terrible UI....Atrix line? Fail.....Razr....I will give them battery on the Max but lose points for a sub par OMAP....sure its just my opinion but I can't see people being upset anymore over this BS entity.......Moto and Apple need to attend some courses on innovation because they are both all out of it.
Google should employ some good XDA devs to turn that dying rat platform into something good again....Moto has lost the will to out do.

+1 for not buying a phone because it has a locked bootloader.
-1 for thinking motorola (or any major OEM) cares about or listens to people like us. For every person who will not buy an atrix hd because of the bootloader, there are twenty people who will be somewhat annoyed but still buy one, and 1,000 people who will say "what's a locked bootloader?"
Moto knew this would create backlash but they did it anyway. The GS3 is unlocked on at&t, so I don't necessarily believe it was at&t's fault. Moto's message is loud and clear: "Android hobbyists and developers: We DO NOT care about you."
That said, I DO think we can get motorola to change, but missing sales from the open bootloader crowd simply isn't enough. Bad publicity on social networks, petitions, and hopefully an article about the bad publicity and petition on an android news site. How do we get the numbers? Get people who hate locked bootloaders, at&t, and/or motorola to sign. Then get some casual users involved, by describing the bootloader in overly simplified terms. Invoke carrier IQ and privacy, invoke freedom, etc.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz around the atrix HD, so this may be easier said than done, but it would be nice because the atrix HD seems like it has the potential to be a truly great phone, I would suggest it over the Nexus in a heartbeat if it was totally unlocked and easy to install stock AOSP like ROM.

Ya you are right

I once bought a Motorola Android (Atrix 4g), they make great build quality devices, and I'd buy a product of theirs again if they actually decided to ship their devices unlocked...they did this with the Atrix 4g people clamored for it to be unlocked...they said they would provide a solution they never did officially, it was only by luck that a leaked HK firmware for the phone pointed Devs in the direction on how to unlock the BL, fast forward some months and they have been releasing updates that relock the BL with no way to SBF back..Take a look on the verizon side, moto makes flagship phone for them, what did they do ship a Droid Razr with locked BL, their solution release a Dev device with unlocked BL and no warranty...So if we look at their track record on how to deal with BLs I dont put much faith in them, if anything their solution will be to release another Atrix HD Dev edition...too bad too cuz for 99 bux the Atrix HD seems like a solid deal...but I for one will not support them for shipping with a locked BL.

Sorry to be confusing locked bootlocker and locked phone. Can the phone be used for travelling to other countries? That is, using prepaid Simcard to countries that I will be travelling to.

The reason it is harder to get info for unlocking bootloaders

Just FYI: I got off the phone with a bud of mine that works at Motorola. To be honest the reason I called him was I wanted the XML set for the Bionic and I was hoping he could slip it to me so I could get us setup.
To my dismay... he said this:
Ever since the thing with Google was announced EVERYTHING is on lockdown. There is no more swapping motorola devices back and forth between various project developers, everyone can only work on the devices they are assigned and the sensitive stuff is not allowed off site anymore.
Used to be he would come over to my house and unlock my bootloader. Not anymore.
So we can all thank Google for the tightened security at Motorola. Thanks G!
Interesting.

My thoughts are, with the patent wars, Google is trying to cover their ass right now. Until the proposed deal is approved, they are wanting to make sure that nothing slips thru the cracks that could be harmful to their cause in the hands of the opposition. Not to mention, they probably have some new devices in testing along with new hardware components that would be in Google's best interest not to have leaked until they are certified by the FCC. I am going to have to give Google the benefit of the doubt, and say until the deal is approved, they are doing what they can to cover their asses.

The Nexus devices are developers phones and the only Moto HC tablet is also a dev device. Not saying it is Google's fault, but it certainly still is a possibility. I personally believe it's the fascist ************s at VZW, and Moto is their lapdog.
That is the point. I would believe, Google would prefer a 'pure' experience on all devices. But, to convince manufacturers to build devices they let them skin it to personalize the experience. Expecting people to buy for their experience, not only their hardware.
I owned an Atrix (still do, but haven't been keeping up 100% lately and just switched to bionic) and if I remember correctly, the moto-google deal wasn't until a fair bit after the release of the Atrix and the unlock of the atrix came after the deal news first broke. I'm not saying this is necessarily proof of anything, but it's the opposite of what one would expect if the info in the OP is true.
Hasn't moto been kind of known for being a pain in the ass about locked bootloaders? I remember a lot of people had very little hope for the atrix being unlocked because of previous devices that never saw a full unlock.

Petition to Unlock Motorola Bootloaders

If you are unhappy in the little support we have in terms of roms, and kernels for our device, blame Motorola for locking their bootloader. Moto claimed that they would unlock the bootloader at the end of 2011. What's the date today? Looks like they changed their mind. We would have a fully working ICS rom if it wasn't for Moto not to mention Hashcode would have more hair and it would have less gray in it... So sign the petition! If you are really passionate, like me, check out the original thread and help them out. If ASUS caved, so will Moto!

Petitioning got HTC and Asus to provide methods to unlock their bootloaders. It also got Verizon to recall that $2 bill paying fee. This IS the way to get companies of this size to do what you want, you have to provide them a real number of dissatisfied customers and a petition does just that.

The best thing we could all do to get moto to listen up is make this our last purchase of a moto device until they offer them with unlocked bootloaders. This along with a few other issues have pretty much insured this is my last purchase of a motorola phone. Companies of this size are a lot more likely to do something to please customers if they start leaving in droves, they'll come up with an idea like ... unlocked bootloaders to attract new customers.

Okay, so MOTODEV's text is a little different. MOTODEV references "future software releases", while the AndroidPolice text references "across our portfolio of devices".
Of course, that difference only affects users who never get any future software releases, since they're not going to get an unlockable bootloader in a new software release if there is no new software release.
I dunno about you, but I haven't received any software releases in or since late 2011 that _didn't_ include an unlockable bootloader. I guess only the Bell XT860 users in this forum have had one such chance go by unaddressed.
Anyway, it's certainly as qualified a statement with a projected start date, which people seem to have mentally morphed into some kind of promise with a due date.
Nothing here that'd make me drop Motorola as a brand. That said, I _would_ choose a four-row keyboard device with an unlocked bootloader by preference. But not because of any promise or lack thereof of an unlocked bootloader in the ephemeral future.

Maybe this is Motorola's "plan" for providing an unlock solution. They're just going to send out one unlocked phone into the wild and we have to find it! It's kind of like the McDonalds monopoly game except when one person wins, we all win.
I for one will not buy another motorola phone simply because of all the hype. Had they followed suite along with their competition and at least released current statements (or something) regarding the issue, I might have a different opinion. I purchased 2 d3's and 2 dx2's ASSuming we would be able to unlock these things. I have since ordered 4 G-Nex's to replace the moto's. They will be completely taken out of circulation simply because I can and it's my "right" as an american to do so. As you can probably tell, I'm pretty ticked off about it. It's nothing more than the principle of it that's got my feathers ruffled. We bought them, if we wish to void the warranty, that should be our business. I've signed the petition (#1654). Maybe it will help you guys out in the future. But I'm also of the opinion that moto doesn't care all that much for the small group of us that have a voice. I guess I don't have to support them as well.

Indeed, seems more like a bait and switch and leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I know they didn't really say they would be unlocking all their bootloaders or anything and the XOOM does seem like progress but I was hoping for a little more of a flood or something like s/e offers with a bootloader unlock offered on their websites for phones that are shipped sim-unlocked (operator allowing).

Ok, so I asked some of my handset design guys at att and what I am being told is that this is AT&T's version of the RAZR, and late to the game as usual.
The bootloader is locked, and it is the same style lock as the A2 in that it is not going to be unlock-able with an e-fuse like the RAZR was, oh and the rumor is that they (AT&T) will not release a dev version of the phone, just like the A2.

Not Moto, but AT&T that is in charge of this fubar.
That is the thing, if you notice most of the time there is a way to unlock most phones on the Verizon network, and almost always on T-mo and sprint, but AT&T is VERY funny about being more locked down. That is one reason they are always late to the game, they do NOT want anyone to have access to the kernel or radio for fear of reaking havoc on their network.

Yeah sort of....
Remember that in the US the carriers have all the power, and the hardware makers get the "privilege" of being allowed to design and release thier phone for the Wireless companies.
There was a link I posted many moons ago on how AT&T brings a phone to market, and how the request for a phone with certain features is sent out to all of thier vedor supply chains, and then they get a mockup back with a basic spec sheet, then from that they decide which one (vendor) fits the bill best. Then they refine the final requirements and it gets a final prototype built.
The above is the reason all the carriers carry "similar" phones with different names and some different features.

Makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying!
Does anyone know why Moto didn't release a razr maxx like battery too?
Well from my understanding... the atrix hd will be just fine with the battery it has in it... look at the HTC one X it has a lil bigger battery inside and i mean just ever so bigger, and runs all day no prob. the s4 CPU uses less power and pack a bigger punch. i would know i own one. but if you can go into a store and check one out i would. they are pretty cool!
looks nice i rly enjoyed the og atrix so many roms now my dad has it. longest i ever kept a phone.
nfc?
guys any idea if the atrix hd supports nfc?

Who is staying and who is leaving?

So with the Nexus 4 around the corner, I'm sure a lot of us are wondering if we should keep messing with this phone. The Nexus 4 is 300 bucks for the 8gb version, so you could sell this phone and get 150-200, and cover the rest. It is completely unlocked and has higher specs all around than this phone (besides no LTE which may stop me from buying it). So I was wondering how much of this community will stay with the AHD. It's a great device, especially with the new battery, but is it worth not be able to flash as many roms as possible to it? Let me know your opinions and help me make up my mind! If I do decide to get it I will have a AHD with the battey mod, otterbox, TPU case, hdmi, and Zagg screen protector for sale lol. But seriously anyone open to speak their minds? I don't know what to do!

Given the lack of a working recovery at this point. I'm giving serious consideration to picking up a N4 as my primary, and keeping my AHD as a backup.
If you read the reviews on the N4, in spite of the newer hardware, it still gets spanked by the One X, and the S3. HERE on Anandtech.
Knowing that my phone spanks both the OneX as well as the S3 like a red headed step child, it's going to be tough moving to a somewhat slower phone, but having a working recovery to backup, and flash my ROMs as updates occur is much more important to me

Everything I have read says that it's better than the S3 and One X. I know Hashcode will get a recovery worked out. I am also annoying Moto on twitter and their live chat. So we will see if they ever unlock this bootloader.

lol read my hits @motorola. I try to spank them daily. Remember when tweeting them to use #motofail lol
As to the N4 being better than the One X and S3, read the link. The only thing it beats the S3 and One X is in gaming, and as I've said before, that's what my XBox is for, not my phone

Ah, do you see any chance of us getting the bootloader unlocked? It looked like Matt was making good progress, I'm guessing that is when he bricked his phone, although I dont know for sure. Or do you think this phone will end up getting left behind completely. I really like this phone, but I am tired of moto already. Seriously, coming out with a dev version 4 months after the retail???? With NO word it will ever come out. That is absolute bs. At least let us trade in out retail version for the dev version (obviously with a small upgrade fee, maybe 50-100 bucks). I would be fine with that and it would be do able for them.

I don't know wtf Moto is up to lately?!?
I was reading that there's a "brick wall" between Google and Moto, meaning that Google bought them for their patents, and they refuse to show any bias towards them in fear of pissing off other phone manufacturers.
I sure wish Google would rethink this strategy, and start building phones that really blow anything else out of the water.
They have the OS, and they now own a company that has the "potential" to build the best phones out, yet they keep frigging things up.
I know I'll never purchase another Moto phone until/unless they start rethinking their strategy, and at the very least stop encrypting the signatures for the bootloaders.
Just my .02c

LG phone? You know that build quality is about on par with a fake Chinese triple sim yPhone... forget it...
Ill buy another phone when it can be converted to a laptop with the whole bundle costing under $300.

From reviews, it suppose to be pretty high quality. Also is suppose to feel nice in the hand. With that said, still a good point and something to look for.
LG's build quailty is under-rated. Same as with any hobby or whatever you call this phone obsession. People look at price and give it a bad name. I think LG started turning the corner with the Nitro. It was a solid phone. Nothing compares to Moto though with build quality. But I think LG beats Samsung and HTC.

Yeah, while I'm not a big fan of LG devices, the N4 was built to Google's specs, not LG's.
For soljagirl to say otherwise was ludicrous lol

Not to mention there is no way any of us have actually used the device yet. I did see a review where the back was already cracked though. Not a good sign, but could also just be a freak accident.

The back is made of glass, the one big negative if you're one not to use a case.
Like no one learned anything from the mistakes of the IPhone/IPod?!?

I wish I could send my Atrix HD to google and get a good percentage off on this phone lol. I am over not being able to flash away. That is a big reason I got an android, I wanted to learn to develop roms. Unfortunately I feel that is much harder on a locked down device lol
Oh I'm staying. Don't need the nexus 4. Very happy with my Had.

Haha I agree, I will be giving it a few more months! I have decided to wait lol
I'll definitely be sticking with the Atrix HD. I was a flashaholic on my Atrix 4G so I was disappointed that this phone has a locked down bootloader. On the other hand, I've had absolutely no complaints about this phone especially where battery life is concerned with the EB40. Having all the power that this phone has to offer with excellent battery life is just what I needed. This phone has completely replaced my computers altogether. As for the bootloader, Hashcode has already done tremendous work on getting safestrap working for our devices. Why worry about a locked bootloader when we can get around it with safestrap? Isn't the point of an unlocked bootloader to get a custom recovery for flashing and isn't that what safestrap hopes to do without the need for unlocking the bootloader? I won't be giving this phone up anytime soon and I look forward to getting a Paranoid Android build going for it.

My Interrogation with Motorola

So I work at Sprint and we finally had a Motorola Representative come down and speak to use (we sell the Photon Q which is like the droid 4 with a bigger screen). I told him about my experiences with the Droid 3 and what we were doing here. I told him about XDA's shared hatred towards Sanjay and he said he understood. He basically admitted that the Droid 3 should have never happened and that the Droid 4 was already practically made when the Droid 3 was being sold, basically because they already dumped money in to the droid 3 so they had to unload it on the consumer (Sanjay's fault). Some of the positive things he mentioned was that with the new leadership, updates are going to happen much more often and that flagship phones won't have 59 variations. Motorola will also start keeping it's promise to keep phone's up to date for 18 months as well.
I asked him about the bootloader blog debacle and he basically said that Verizon came in and put their foot down, which made them not follow through on what they said was going to happen. Actually in the end he said 90% of things are Verizon's fault (I wouldn't doubt it). They do have a huge advertising campaign that is practically paid for by Verizon, Verizon uses that to their advantage and blackmails them to do their bidding. He also mentioned that alot of his fellow employees are hoping that Google can strong arm Verizon into sitting the %#@& down and getting over themselves, allowing them to do a signed bootloader unlocking. He says that it should allow you to register your phone's ESN to MotoDev and it would then send a message back to the Verizon that the warranty is void but it would allow people to unlock the bootloader. Hardware warranty will still be covered by Moto, just not through Verizon and Asurion (unless you pay a deposit) There are a lot of angry sales people who do not like to sell Motorola phones due to their bloatware and locked boot-loader practices and Motorola knows that it isn't good for sales. He says the most common notes he sends back to HQ usually contain something about the bootloader, less motoblur, and death to Sanjay.
If you have any questions I can try to get in contact with him and see what else he has to say or if I asked him a question I forgot to put it in this post I can answer it. I grilled him for an hour.
Holy crap thanks. I hope they update us.

Wow. So does this mean there is still hope yet?
Nope. It means that this phone is forgotten but future devices starting next quarter will be supported much better. Sorry.
This seems to confirm what we've believed all along - that the D3 was awkwardly released, from a point of view of timing; that Verizon had the contractual ability to prevent Moto from unlocking bootloaders on these phones.
"Death to Sanjay" seems silly at this point - the guy's been gone for more than 6 months.
Well, poo. Guess I better be saving money for an S3. Or maybe the S4.

Well Death to Sanjay was the most common note this year, and I still hold him accountable for our droid 3's.

Wait for the S4. The S4 will be out sometime in April and will have a 1080p screen, rumored to have no bezel (edge to edge display), quadcore and the unbreakable flex display, and a 13mp camera. Samsung is seriously going after the iphone with this one. This is the one I am saving for but I will end up going to Sprint due to Verizon's data plans.
Yeah, I was thinking that as well. But I'd be buying full retail.

That would be awesome.
It sounds like the future at Motorola will be a lot better. We've already seen the fast updates for the Razr HD and M, hopefully Motorola gets the update out to their late 2011 phones as well.
I'm looking at getting the Razr M as my phone when I can upgrade in early 2013 unless something better comes out, since its one of the few phones without a huge screen. Its already got JB and Hash has safestrap working on it, so there will be some dev support. I'll keep my Droid 3 as a spare VZW phone and to mess around with ROMs on.
