Best Buy employee duh - Nexus 7 General

So I went to bb today to see if they carried the Nexus or accessories. I glanced and didn't see it so I of course walked over to the "computer" employee working that area.
Asked her if they carried the new Google tablet. She asked me who made it, what the name of it was, and other questions that I would think a bb computer employee would know.
After answering her questions she goes to look but I knew at this point they didn't have anything. When she returns she says, "we don't have that but I do have the ipad"
I was speechless

BB employees are sometimes like fashion models, they represent things that they have no clue what its about.

To suggest a apple product to a android user is sinful

You can say a lot of things about Apple, but as a product itself, the iPad isn't overpriced or underspecced.

It is and I'll continue to say along with them being a patent troll to eliminate competition and consumer choice. I started out on Apple but don't buy that overpriced underspecced crap anymore.

As a BB employee I can say that a good majority of staff only know about the products in the department they work in. Just because we are near a department does not mean we work in said department. We generally do not sell the entire store. Also, we don't care which products you buy because we do not work on commission and even if we did we make the least amount of money (as a store) on apple products.

The iPad is overpriced and underspec'd. It's literally twice the price of the Nexus 7, only has a dual-core CPU (Nexus 7 is 4+1), and only has 4 graphic stream processors (Nexus 7 has 12). Once more, the iPad is overpriced and underspec'd.

Yep, along with no built-in GPS for a $499 iPad3 16GB WIFI. I'll take one Nexus 7 over that piece of turd any day and the fact that you can buy two Nexus 7's for the same price as that one turd is just icing on the cake.

As a second bb employee, I can confirm this. The majority of people I work with didn't know about the Nexus 7 when I got it, since it's not anything we carry it's not really anything they need to know.
And too touch on that apple part, we make close to zero money on apple products, so I promise there's no reason to push them.

The A5X has an SGX 543MP4, that is 4 graphics processors (not just 4 cores) in one SoC, totaling 16 cores, 32 GFLOPS (vs about 10 in the Tegra 3 T30L).
Has dual channel DDR2 memory (vs single channel DDR2 in the Tegra 3).
An aluminum body.
The highest 264 DPI display in a tablet.
Amazing looking color quality.
I understand it is cool to hate on Apple. But let's not go nuts and say it's under specced. The iPad 3 is a beast. And I was shocked with such a great display they were able to stay at the $500 price tag, that is thanks to their bulk buying power no doubt.

That makes perfect sense

Thought about it! I worked in retail as a general manager for years and I always knew what we did and did not have. And as the GM I had to know the whole store so I'd expect the computer section person to know that department.
I was actually recruited by best buy one time but its hard to move up.
Anywho, when I got home I ordered a case online for under $7. Its a snap on kind with screen protector like my note had.

'iPad Mini' Billed as a Nexus 7 Killer
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2406688,00.asp
I know Damon (the article author) is probably trolling, but boy oh boy, how many other websites are reporting this as "news".
Wow.
I couldn't stop laughing (ROTFLOL etc) when I read this, fun times ahead Apple is probably having sleepless nights with its dropping market share to Android, Samsung (oh and did I hear RIM collaborating with MSFT... Ha ha ha awesome).
as much as this is floating around, many believe it won't happen as Jobs said himself he doesn't like that form factor. Not to mention it doesn't seem like apple since they're notorious for over charging for things. Then again who knows.
The iPad mini would probably be really expensive and won't compete directly to the nexus 7, but i know people will still buy it because its Apple. Its sad that Android has a reputation of being difficult to understand when they're both about the same in terms of ease of use.

Heh... This had to come, Apple fans are probably unable to digest the Nexus 7 in its current form (and at its current price point). Another twat article I caught about this "Nexus 7 killer tag" which started with the following lines "The hunter becomes the hunted"... stopped right there, was a Damon Poeter clone.
Judging the by the price of their iPod Touch, a $199 price for a 7" is very unlikely.

You keep worrying about what's going to come out after your purchase and you'll never buy anything.
I have no doubt Apple will release a 7 inch tablet to replace the iPod touch which is pretty much useless in there product line right now. Why get the iPod when you can get the iPhone for about the same price subsidized. They need another product they can market as filling a nitch the that their other products don't.

So you think Apple cares what everyone whats, or that they will change the product line in a way to sustain the most profit.
Here check out the iPod sales compared to iPhones and iPads with only about half of them being Touch sales.

They are do for a refresh and the need something the stand apeart from the iPhone and the iPad. Hence the will come out with a 7 inch iPod touch to fill the gap. The current touch is just too similar to the iPhone.
Apple has NEVER built low cost hardware going all the way back to the Apple II. The whole business is built on selling overpriced, nice looking hardware to prissy buyers with lots of disposable income. I can not imagine them fighting for the $199 entry level tab market.
And like one poster said... an 8gb iPOD TOUCH is selling for $199
Cool, another tablet for me to waste my money on. Bash the iPad all you want, but it is still the best tablet on the market and a 7" version will be just as awesome. Can't wait.

Size? Yes, probably. Price point? Highly doubt it. Apple has never released a "competing" device that hasn't been "overpriced" (in my opinion) for the same hardware. I see their 7" device being in the $300 to $350 range for around the same performance and the fanboys will eat it up.

That is pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I figure that in order to get the phone to be distributed by the big carriers, Google probably had to agree to sell their own version at a high price.
Plus cellular radio and licensing fees for patent holders. Look at HTC and how much they pay companies like Microsoft for patents that they hold related to cellular phones. I read an article that Microsoft makes something like $15 for every HTC android phone sold.

Specifically with respect to the Nexus 7, there is very little profit on the device.
Google expects to make money by selling you apps, books, music, films etc and from other services.
Asus are almost certainly in it for the kudos it gives to their brand - if the Nexus 7 wasn't a Nexu device, it would be at least 25% more expensive.

Dave

Because we aren't willing to pay that much.
Simple as that.
The manufacturers tried selling $400 or $500+ tablets, and they're pretty much flopping. Tablets just aren't considered as necessary as phones, so none of them (save the ipad) got enough momentum to take off.
They then discovered that we are willing to pay $200 or $300 for a popular brand, so that's where we're at now.
This is a good thing (ipad users aside). It means we'll start to get more bang for our buck, because us consumers as a whole were picky enough. Now all that's left to do is to become even more picky, so they're forced to sell for $100.

Nexus 7. Thought I was going to hate it.

After coming the new Asus Infinity tablet, and after returning/exchanging my 4th one caused by QC issues, feeling bitter, I thought I'd never (At least until QC is fixed) purchase another Asus tablet again.
Opportunity struck when I was bored and tablet-less, to purchase the Nexus 7 that was on hold from a friend with my name on it. Supposedly I purchased the last Nexus 7 within a 170Mi radius of local stores relative to me, remarked a District Manager of the store.
A shot in the dark, yes, after being through hell with the Infinity.
I absolutely pre-judged this devices 7inch screen, lack of rear camera, lack of ports, etc to justify buying Asus' Flagship latest Transformer tab.
I cant seem to put this damn thing down, I use it constantly, the form-factor is a perfect size and weight, the back feels great to hold. No issues with QC (yet), not a single dead or hot pixel, no screen raising or separation, no creaking or squeaking, this unit feels solid. FYI: My unit is from the 'C8 Serial Number' series.
The biggest issue I have yet are from the bystanders who approach me wherever I seem to go and ask me about my 'iPad Mini' or how did I get an 'iPad Mini'.
Within a 40 minute coffee shop sitting, 7 people approached me asking if it was an 'iPad' mini. I spent twice as long explaining them it's not an iPad Mini, its a Nexus 7, it runs Android OS, etc. Then bombarded by their questioning on why I didn't wait for the iPad Mini and ridiculed as to why I didn't have an iPad yet.
This is my first 'real' Android device, let alone tablet (not counting the Infinity which never left my house, except for the BestBuy exchanges).
I've learned that the confusion of the Nexus 7 for an iOS/Apple is inevitable.
So I raced home and came up with an easy solution... attached are photos.
Yes it's actually easier going with their beliefs of it being an iPad Mini then quickly hiding the device in my bag and watch them try and snap photos from across the room. It also gives me an excuse to quick-pitch the curious that 'they never saw this', and 'we never and cannot talk' which usually does the trick.
A fun game I am enjoying as I await my case to arrive...
Cheers to all the newfound friends and support on here. I'm blessed.

I'm hoping for a release before x-mas, but I don't think it will matter that much who releases first. Apple has a strong customer base, and they'll buy the iPad Mini no matter what. I don't think the N7 really is competing against Apple, it's more against the likes of Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 and 7.7 and other similar devices. The Apple products are in a different league.

Again don't assume that commercial practices are the same everywhere. These strong contracts with carriers for 3G/4G are mainly USA & UK things. I live in Asia and most people only use prepaid short contracts, a week, or a month. If the result is not good or another carrier now propose a better price we just shift to this new carrier. Who cares about an ipod touch? In my opinion it's completely irrelevant....
If you think an iPod and a Nexus tablet is comparable and you're on the fence and the price is the only factor that will tip you to one or the other side...well...then I suggest you get the iPod...I'm sure you'll be happy...

Poor old Apple users. Once they have been infected they can't help themselves.
Every time any tech product is mentioned they have to mention Apple.
It would be funny if it wasn't so tragically sad.

Theory as to why LG is constantly out of stock, and why Google made a bad decision.

I have a theory as to why the Nexus 4 is out of stock, and for such a long time. This may or may not have been mentioned before (probably has) but I just wish to discuss it. Remember, this is purely speculation.
The reason LG has only made around 400,000 handsets and starved production was due to their own flagship, the LG Optimus G. Every single thing about this phone, is IDENTICAL to the Nexus 4, besides the fact the N4 is rocking stock stock android and the aesthetics are slightly different. The N4 has an advantage among the developer community with it being able to be torn apart and tweaked and tinkered with, unlike the OG which LG is still being a little b____ about the bootloader on many of their recent phones.
The 16GB LG Optimus G is $800 here in Australia, and the 16GB Nexus 4 is $400. You do the math.
I don't know if LG's actuaries are idiots or something, but they would have known about the guaranteed success of the next Nexus device, going on the sales figures of all the other devices. LG thought that making a tiny amount of profit on every Nexus device and in turn increasing their companies reputation in the mobile business, was worse than not making ANY profit on their CRAPBOX 3000 (LG Optimus G). I can see where they are coming from, as they don't want their spectacular flagship to be left in the dust with full stock, but zero sales so basically I think they were just chucking a cry or something.
SO DON'T HATE ON GOOGLE FOR THE LACK OF NEXUS'
What you can hate Google for, is choosing LG in the first place. Yeah, they may of felt generous and were trying to support them but at the cost of their own company getting hated? Why didn't they just buy LG like they did with Motorola, and that would be the end of it? When I heard of the new Nexus Device, I celebrating because for some reason I thought they were going to choose HTC for production (who knows why). Nek minnit, they choose some struggling company that either can't or won't keep up with production.
This may of looked like a run-out-of-the-mill rant, but this was some, high-quality, researched ranting skills to pay the bills.
Discuss.
^ not sure what you meant by high quality research as I don't see any evidence, references and all I can see is pure speculations that have been floating around in this forum since the day problems with stock started.
Do share some of your research details with us to base your ideas that has some concrete evidence of what you are assuming I'd happening and I'll gladly click thanks button under your name

Yeah he did say it was purely speculation. Whatever the reason, the lack of stocks is simply annoying.

I fail to see how you guys can always come up with such gossip.
Google has made contracts with LG and they are producing the amount Google demanded.
Whether it was Google ordering just a tiny amount of phones, or LG can't keep up with production, due to manufacturing errors or anything else, we will never know.
Also, LG is not a bad hardware manufacturer. They do have the capability to spit out hundreds of thousand devices a month, and they've proven that they can.
For your info: devices produced in October: 75k
Devices produced in December: 400k
As you can see, they can definitely keep up with the demand, it's probably just Google ordering only tiny amounts of it.
A contract breach, as in simply not delivering the amount of phones Google demanded, would have legal consequences for them, so I guess they will be thinking twice before hampering the production.
Cheers.
Lg has good hardware? Hmmmm...i don't know. Have you hold Lg L9 or L7, its a pure piece of ****. Quality zero. Maybe they build good displays and parts, but housing of every device is ****y. TVs also.

Lol, do you think "hundreds of thousands of devices a month" is anywhere near enough for a $600 phone priced at $350? Try several millions a month.
Oh and those production numbers were just speculation (albeit a logical one). No one knows the exact numbers.
Why does everyone blame LG? Is there a valid excuse for Samsung taking forever to restock the Nexus 10?

Good point. Google is just building the hype. If they wanted to really earn money on N4 they would behave differently.

Yes, 400k might not be enough. But don't expect the nexus to sell like the iPhone or a Samsung galaxy. There simply is no marketing at all for the nexus. Companies like Apple and Samsung invest millions every year into marketing. Have you ever seen a nexus 4 ad other than on YouTube?
Probably not. The nexus' demographic is mostly tech enthusiasts.
I don't think LG is intentionally halting the manufacturing process, i mean they would be really stupid to do so, some of of you seem to forget that one of the biggests ways to sell is having quantity over price, if LG sells 5 million Nexus 4 that would make them a ton more money than selling 1 million Optimus G  , also it doesn't hurt that a lot more people are talking good stuff (regarding quality) about them, that could never hurt a company .
What LG did on purpose (in my opinion) was refusing to provide a 32 gb version of the phone , so if people want more storage (and LTE) they should buy the Optimus G

I had a 2012 47" LG HDTV and the housing was actually pretty nice. They used some type of real brushed metal for the housing instead plastic made to look like brushed metal like other manufacturers. I ended up returning it for a bigger TV though.

I disagree. I had a g2x and it was awesome except for the software. When is the last time you had a phone with HDMI out??? G2x had it, also was the first device with dual core.

Actually I've seen nexus 4, 7 and Samsung chromebook adverts in newspapers and on advertising boards on the London underground. Haven't seen any marketing for the nexus 10 though.

Blame Google because they are paying LG and someone really messed up in projecting how many to produce.
I mean last time it was Verizon holding it back so Google had to plan better this time.

I'm sorry but this post is complete and utter rubbish. I have seen more adverts on telly for nexus 4 and nexus 7 than I have Samsung devices in the last month, so you cannot claim that there is no marketing at all. Get your facts straight.
Add to that the nexus adverts had me thinking it was an advert for an iPad, and Google are pretty bloody clever with their advertising.

I can only speak for my country, but advertising for the nexus 4 is nonexistent here.
Hell, the only nexus ad I've ever seen was for the nexus s a few years ago. On the other hand, there are Samsung and Apple ads multiple times a day.
And I know that this is the case for a lot of countries.

Yeah, but the O2X also doesn't have enough RAM, the proportions are a bit off and the spontaneous shut downs were never fully fixed. I have owned one for the past year and a half and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

"telly" suggest the UK or somewhere there which makes sense as someone else says the "Tube" and such which is London's subway .
In the USA however, there is 0 ads on TV for the Nexus 4, there are some for the Nexus 7 but NEVER has there been one for the Nexus 4 or 10. Not even in the newspaper other than reviews and such mentioning it. Maybe that's why they don't however as they've already got tons of (positive) press here. In general, you advertise to get your name out there and build brand, once you are out there and everyone knows your name you tend to save those ad dollars.
