Dock point is useless! Charge and OTG can not be carried out simultaneously! - Nexus 7 General

I have made a case charger, use the dock points on N7.But it's useless.Once I plug in the OTG cable,N7 stop charge.
Very disappointed.

Charging
OTGing,not charging

Apparently the kernel [or maybe the charging hardware] disables charging when OTG host mode is enabled. I asked about simultaneous OTG & charging over on Rootzwiki, read this post:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/30615-can-you-charge-usb-host-mode-simultaneously/#entry868406

Wow, first of all, nice job. I like what you did with the case mounted extra USB charging port lol.
And second.. damnit thats really dissapointing...
I was hoping to buy the official dock + a USB hub so I could dock the tablet to charge, access external storage, and run on an ethernet connection. Sigh.
I dont see much point in getting the official dock now :|

Why did you ever get your hopes up in the first place? The tablet was never marketed or even designed for that.
The pogo pins are not useless. When pogo pin docks are available they will prevent excessive wear and tear on the charging port.

What do you mean "not the same way"?
However, another user on a different device says he got OTG + charging to work, and that "it should work with any OTG device." Not sure if it will work with the N7, but he hasn't posted the details yet, he says he will soon.
It's probably worth a read, highlight is post #2

Sorry,my English is poor.I'm from China.
The two VCCs is not connected. There are two ways to drive the PMIC to charge the battery. When use the dock points, the battery icon is not displayed 'charging'.

What's wrong with being creative with my nexus?
And I only had those ideas after seeing the threads confirming that Ethernet adapters are compatible.
And I don't know about you but I've never had a usb port wear out on me.
Might still get the dock just cause it looks cleaner though

OTG test,if you can read chinese:http://bbs.gfan.com/android-4836095-1-1.html

@OP
N7 can't provide power to USB peripheral while it's charging. Re-route USB connection through dock, and have dock power both peripheral and N7. See schematic for above-referenced homemade dock for Xperia S (no need for switches to disconnect ground or OTG).
Edit: Add switch to short D+ and D- for faster charging when OTG isn't in use.

[HACK] Hardware HDMI/MicroSD Hack? Unused Pins/Connectors

HI! i've found some pics of the nexus 7 motherboard and some connectors seems to be unused... If you look at the "con1" (the one used for micro usb connection) it has 22 pins 0_o. Maybe we can find a hardware hack =D
More images here
We could do a "simple" (dangerous) test: HDMI has a hot plug detection pin, the only way to check is provide one pin with +5v dc and check if any other pin sends a ddc query.... but how can we find the hotplug pin (if there's any)?

From the teardown it was pretty clear there was space for the rear camera as well as HDMI.
The IO presenters were using units with HDMI, so it was probably the same motherboard, populated.
You would have to be a hard-core hacker to want toi add your own HDMI. No idea what is missing beside header and connector. Probably not as bad as adding MHL
I am happy living without HDMI.
Maybe I will never use the hdmi connector but hacking electronical things when i have to hack biological ones every day is a nice way to spend the time xD

Can't back it up right now but will frantically google to find it.. But I remember reading that it had the hardware for mhl but currently not enable in software?
but just tested my jellybeaned gnex and that works fine with mhl so not sure how much truth there is to that.
I can vouch for the photo of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port, as well as a comment from a presenter that the special units they were using for presentations had HDMI.
No, I can not provide any links. That was thousands of pages ago...
I do not believe the Nexus 7 has the MHL chip, or any provision for it. Asus is not listed as a MHL provider.
Samsung (Nexus) is a MHL provider, so the hardware there would not be a surprise.
In that teardown review (where the OP got that image, I believe), they mistakenly said it supported HDMI out and included a picture of the HDMI cable from the nexus Q. They later retracted that comment.
That might be the source of the confusion.
There was at least one actual picture of a Nexus 7 with an HDMI port on the bottom.
I think a reviewer got their hands on a presenter's unit.
The image you're looking for is in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736916
The internel dev versions (the ones used for presentations) had mini hdmi.
So, it does make sense that theres space on the board.
Thank you for that picture link! I searched everywhere for that...
At least that is one less reason to think I have lost my mind...
I'd love to be able to solder on an sdcard slot, if that's all that's needed. It's generally pretty easy to solder to headers if you're careful about it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
From the teardown, I don't recall seeing any space for an SD card.
Rear camera - yes, HDMI - yes, but not SD Card.
I could be mistaken...
Also, the external storage problem has been pretty much solved with a USB OTG cable and stickmount.
we could solder a slod for an additional sd card... there's enaught space to fit in a sd card without "external" access.

we're counting pins and waiting for more info =P
look here: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/KjNsrjlvHZdFWEGF.huge
we have 14 free pins and an hdmi data connection requires only 12 wires + 5v + grnd.
i'm looking for someone who can do some simple tests on the unused pins.
when i will have the nexus 7 i'll do it by myself at uni but maybe someone who have the I/O version now could do something meantime.
Looks pretty interesting to me hope we cram a sd card In there somewhere.

MHL adapter in back of dock

SImple question,
if you buy a charging dock can you simply put the MHL adapter in the back into the micro usb port and have it charge/video out at the same time?
clearly the new 11 pin dock for an s3 or n2.
i couldnt see why this wouldnt work but just want to make sure. im planning on a nice little setup via HDMI and bluetooth keyboard/mouse.
The setup you describe worked with my galaxy tab 7" plus but not with my galaxy s3, so I'd be interested in the answer to this aswell
For me, i search the Saint Graal, a charging dock and transfer data with :
- Audio line-out
- HDMI
- USB
- Port SD ...
It's only a dream ???
it will work with Phones that doesn't have the extra pins that Samsung put in the micro USB port in the Note 2/S3 unless that dock has these pins unfortunately it wont work.

^^would the samsung adapter 5-11pin adapter work that you can buy for a few bucks?
i feel this is reasonable since a dock is simply an extension in some plastic.
The official smart dock has:
HDMI
3USB ports (you could plug in an sd card adapter)
3.5mm out
micro usb sync/charge in
cost 64.95 euros i think

Kidigi also do one: http://www.kidigi.com/product_lv2.php?pid=1418 but it apparently won't sync with a PC, so it's just an MHL dock. Doesn't look like it'll charge the phone well either as it outputs 500mA

homemade reverse side OTG adapter.

I often use on the go adapter for usb sticks and joysticks. The problem I find is that the micro adapter justs acts as a nice lever that is going to kill my socket. So I decided to adress the problem by spreading the load while at the same time tucking it out the way. Funny that when I came into the forum there seems to be threads about making some tiny little usb/sdcard adapters, obviously the smaller the better.
My solution is not small but when I fall asleep watching a movie and me nexus ends up on the floor hopefully nothing will snap!

It is comfortable and makes me nexus much more easy to handle while using OTG.
what's the verdict?
Update...
Power adapter addon.
Was going to make another adapter that included a socket for charging. But infact the original adapter already allows for charging using timurs kernel. But of course I could only charge or use otg but not both. I made this addon that attaches to the original and allows power and otg.
It is quite bulky! I will probably make an all in one at some point.
As for a tutorial... well wiring diagrams for making otg cable can be found all over the web. All I did was use the stripped down to the bare bones usb plugs and sockets, covered nexus in cling film, then used some milliput (can be bought in hardware shops, like plasticine bet sets hard) to fashion the adapter. Bobs your uncle.
Looks good, and does solve that issue.
Another good idea would be a non-OTG version for charging while in use.
Either way, very nice...
Thanks danvee, i had been thinking of one with charging capability as i use timurs otg kernel which allows charging and otg at the same time. I had not however thought of making one that simply charged though, great idea thanks.

you can try customize USB-On-The-Go (OTG) with charger enable...
a normal USB OTG connected Sense/ID together Ground to work USB OTG only
to enable charger you need 100k ohm resistor connect it between Sense/ID and Ground
.....it should be work....but it's quite mesh up
I attach some picture....(sorry for my english).....

Option is to use Sony Ericsson dk10 live dock station, like me, which has no problem charging the phone, and attach a flash drive to dock and thus be used as a network drive even or as you decide. But the price of this dock at the moment is about 25$.
This is just my opinion and my practice.

Have you thried such a cable yourself? I saw some cables with additional power connector on eBay, but the descriptions told nothing about charging the phone. Does a DIY cable really allow the charging of the phone?
