[ROM(attemtp)][CM10/MIUI]CM1+MIUI+PHONEmode mashup[so far failed builds] - Galaxy Note 10.1 Android Development

Hi,
INTRO
I run MIUI on my phone and have since i discovered it. I am really fond of the EOL GB MIUI builds. I think the interface is great. Clean and smooth.
Searching around the web I came across [ROM][ICS] MIUI for Galaxy Tab 10.1 - P75xx - 20120825, I had previously seen a post on [GUIDE] How to port MIUI v4 to your Device
I really like the idea of using Button Savior or similar, combined with the miui style notification toggles.
Mockups from my phone;

I have already tried CM7/9/10 on my Defy, along with other roms, and already had a go at CM10 on my GN10. Well, that gives me the thought, I might try to build up a rom for GN10
ATTEMPT
So I grabed the unofficial CM10 from here on xda, maguro MIUI-2.8.31 (Galaxy Nexus GSM JB) from miuiandroid.com and the build script mentioned above.
After reading the build script for the ICS MIUI for the GT10 and the GUIDE (both above) I didnt hold high hopes, but I had a go.
The script, of course fails, but builds a rom that gets to the bootspash, and I had a manual go at building my mashing the two together and never got past the samsung boot logo.
I ran logcat over adb while booting and it gets stuck due to something to do with the audio and probably many other reasons.
REASONS
The reason why I think this is a good Idea;
I am not keen on the Android tablet style notfication/nav bar, esp since there is no nice way to auto hide it. The MIUI style phone notification bar can be exposed even when there is a full screen app by swiping down from the top.
I really like the no apps drawer way that mihome works. New apps appear right there, and can be uninstalled in the same way shortcuts are removed in most other launchers, by dragging to the top. The MIUI implementation seems much nicer than on iphone. ( I understand that MiHome does not do landscape and even if this mashup workes on our GN10 devices I will still prob use nova launcher to get rotating home). I am not saying MiHome is perfect by any means. It has no way of making customized app shortcuts without 3rd party app and then they seem to be pretty flakey at actually displaying the shortcut on the launcher. For making url shortcuts ShortcutLink works very well.
The toggles in MIUI are great, and when there is more than fit on the screen they can be swiped left and right to reveal more. The MIUI GB notfications area is super clean, With the ES mod (swipe away like ICS/JB) why do we need to be told a notification is ongoing, if you can't swipe it away it is ongoing. Also the MIUI toggles jump directly to the settings when long pressed and toggle when clicked, this is top functionality.
Now, I am not specifically wanting actual miui, but I know of no other way to get something so similar and get the same functionality.
PROBLEM
The problem I have is my lack of abiltiy/knowlege in programing. I did sucessfully install the Android envoironment and eclipse on both my linux (crunchban/debiantesting x64) box at the office and my Win7x64 box at home, but as far as actually knowing what I am doing, I could barely manage to complete some of the basic howto's that are basically copy/paste due to the ide changing slightly from the tutorials. :crying:
I am quite proficient at linux and writing bash scripts etc, have a bit of php/database understanding etc, but it is not enough.
I also understand that CM10 is pretty bleeding edge on our devices and doesnt really provide a stable base yet, but it is pretty good and I am sure will get enough love to become rock solid/everything working in the not too distant future due to the great work by the dev's
SOLUTION
Due to my lack of programing skills the only way I think that this ROM/project/idea can move forward is for a dev to be fond of the idea, and/or enough people to like the idea that a deve thinks it is worthwile.
I can only sweeten such an idea with assistance in providing multi GB of webspace (with php/mysql/pgsql/tomcat/whatever), multi TB of download data, email services. I can provide only moderate ammounds of donated funds. I am sure that I can manage doco and support assistance.
END
Well, I am not sure anyone would like my idea, I am very open to comments and thoughts in the matter. Please refrain from flame wars on particular platforms or rom styles. It is more taking the best ideas from all places and implementing them into something great.
Thanks for reading.

RESERVED, in case some action actually happens

very glad to see some dev attempts. I dont know much about your chanses to pull this of. But i wish you the best of luck. Welcome

Ok, after searching around and trying this out I have not really made any progress. I think one way of getting a more phone style UI on my GNote10 is to have a go at actually compiling
PARANOID android, as there is some nice instructions over at this thread, and progress is happining on the GTab10.1, so there is already work on a comparable screen to leverage off of.
At lease this will get me into setting up a decent environment and see how it goes, my pc is plenty fast enough, just need to chuck another drive in and ubuntu as per the guide, which is no trouble.
Well, anyways, thanks for looking.

There is a PA release for the Note 10.1. But you have probably already seen that.

Sweeter Home!

Has anyone downloaded the free preview for this app? It looks awesome and has a user edit built in.
Finally a different home setup that really changes the interaction.
Yep - MASSIVE editing abilities. Great start and should hopefully get better. The app scrolling is faster than the standard Android home in my experience, no lag at all! Few force closes while editting here and there but mostly remembers what you edited when it relaunches. Calendar seems broken for me, only shows a handful of what appointments I actually have coming up. Still in Beta though so with improvements could be exceptional.
Tried it out last night, not really my cup of tea. I like Open Home much better. Also, it force closed on me countless times, untill it just got too annoying and I uninstalled.
OK this thing has some pretty great potential. I'm going to build some screens and upload screen shots later. EG, no need for folders, you can create a realtime scrolling tray and drag apps into it.
Good stuff so far. Shows a lot of potential. I think you should be able to span background wallpapers like in normal home, and not just the same image stretched for every pane. I think there also needs to be more controls over the layout options. Good start. I wish the other home alternatives had this kind of customization.
Maybe I'm just lazy or maybe it's that I've gotten used to using dxTop, but the layout of it is horrendous! I mean, I even think all the screens of aHome is better than that. Up, home, right, home, left, home, etc. I found it annoying within the first 5 minutes.
its not about UI right now
this has more potential than all the other home screen changing applications which mostly all they do is change icons...and added extra screens, this goes beyond it and makes your G1 efficient and business savy, recent calls, texts, etc all in front of the screen.. like yes it has UI problems, but the potential of ACTUAL customization is beyond these other applications, and they charge..
with their lite versions etc.
it has made the home page a personal thing, and isn't that what we all love, personalization.

For introductions, that's all it's about. I'm not talking about themes or anything else, but the layout is crap. The idea may be good and maybe if those tabs stayed on each screen so you don't have to constantly go back to the center to get anywhere it would be more efficient. But, as it stands if I'm not impressed by how it looks, I'm not even going to waste my time in testing it out...same as how I won't give a website a chance if it's appearance is lacking. First impressions are everything.
so im guessing, judge a book by its cover.
i agree with the UI being hideous.
but compared to ahome, dxtop and open home, all they're done is the same thing, a couple widgets, extra pages (that just move differently from each other) and changing icons. that's it..
yehs, sweeter home is not good to look at, its the ugly duckling right now, but with all its features and the developer open for suggestions and implementing things, it's far better than the other home applications.
i gave it a chance and tested the product out before making any ASSUMPTIONS and i like the features but not the UI, but everything is a work in progress and the developer actually went beyond just chaning major icons, adding an extra page and widgets like what OTHER HOME applications have already done.
I make no assumptions, merely observations. I don't like the UI and attraction is the first step to any partnership. I never said I wasn't willing to give it a shot later, you assumed that. I said as it is now, it sucks.
From my experience with dxTop, the UI works with the theme I have on my phone. There are no extra downloads or specifics that I have to implement. I'm not saying it's the best, but that's a lot better than any of the others are doing.
Tried it, a little too much for me.
I like it simple. Open Home for me.
Here's screen 1, 2 and 3 I've set up so far. Few bugs I've found (app TRAY has started duplicating the actual apps in it for every new tray added, not sure why)... anyway, looks pretty good and once more stability and features are released this will be my default home I think...
Left is SMS's with quick links to contact apps below.
Middle is (top) most used apps, (middle) all apps, (bottom) communication apps, (here's where I want more app trays but won't really work atm, I want a utils tray, games try, notes tray, and comms tray with all apps on a different screen).
Right is contact list.
--- Photobucket died right when I updated the images, stand by --
I think I figured out the tray duplication thing, just gotta test it. RENAME the trays! LOL.
EDIT: updated screen above. Got extra trays working - all scroll horizontally. Added labels to app trays and added labels to SMS and contacts list.
Next: "all" apps tray on the lower screen, and skin the calendar (even though it's broken) on the top screen...
I tried getting this app last night and a few times today but I keep getting "download unsecessful".

Can't find it man, I think I got it from http://g1wallz.com/ - or maybe in the wallpapers topic on here? I'll upload it later when I get time.
See, I cant find it in my market. Im assuming that Im having so much trouble with my market because I have an ADP Phone? I cannot purchase, Ahome or Open home (the paid versions dont show up)
i can't find it on market either- i did yesterday but it gave me download unsuccessful. since then i can't find it- maybe it has been taken off for fixing or something?
I tried backing it up with Astro but couldn't do it.
http://www.cyrket.com/package/com.sweeterhome.preview1 - Doesn't do it for you? There's a new version, I'm about to update.
EDIT: You can now long press in a tray to bring up shortcuts. Nice. Works with Anycut too, not BetterCut though

Haha. It takes a little time to figure out how it all works. I sat down for some hours before I was even able to modify the Borderline theme - but goddamn I love the customization possibilities! =DD
I love SweeterHome and its customisation, but I find the performance a bit lacking sometimes. Anyone else having that problem?
Great themes by the way.

Yeah. I get a couple of Force Closes a day - and it can be a bit laggy at times. When it does get laggy I normally use FastReboot and that fixes it.
Thanks
Oh my, SweeterHome! Completely forgot about that since my old G1!

Here's one of mine. Search for 'colormeandroid' or 'touchme' to find it.
I really like this launcher and wonder why more folks don't.
I'm still learning how to use it and yes it's harder to theme then other launchers.
But the end results are great.
I only wish it had one thing...scrolling widget support.
It needs the ability by different theme designers to 1) choose screen layout: conventional instead of 2D 2) ability to lock out additional screens 3) better resolution independent support. Right now the layouts pretty much ONLY works for one res and looks like **** in any other res.
I've started to work on a Win7 Starter theme
Not a lot really....all for 240x320 (I have a Vodafone 845)
Been playing around with this for the last few days managed to come up with this
i love the amount of functionality it adds to my phone
might change it and invert the colours though

before you change the colors could i use this theme? i like the black and while clean look and you have done a great job with it.
Is it possible to use an Action tray to change the skin when clicked?
I'm still working out all the possibilities.
The biggest advantage I like about SH is that all widgets can be hidden using springboards.
This is my first theme. Search for "Tabby" or "Vertig" from SH Theme section
It's pretty simple, a bottom dock that is on the left, center, and right screens. The buttons change color when pressed.
Below are the three docks

Gave this a quick run. Didnt flash Gapps. Seemed pretty nice as a stock replacement. 2.3.4 is a nice touch. Looking forward to see what you have in store...but im so used to CM7 that its hard to not be able to control more settings from within the ROM.
so what's the main differentiation between this, CM&, and other AOSP-based gingerbread roms like OMGB/OMFGB?
its hard to download
could u send another link?
This is running very well. I am using Conaps Dual Boot tool and this is now one of my four ROMs. I used the overclock setting to bump the speed up one notch and I got nearly 1900 on my Quadrant score.

Thanks for this. I have been trying the various Gingersense ROMs and it is good to get a ROM where everything just works. I guess I prefer functionality first and eye candy second.
This will be the first GB ROM I try. Seems nice and straight forward.
By the way, would the EVO camera apk work with this? Everything works well so far. Just not loving the stock camera. I like the EVO camera i had running on my Incredible.
Forgot to ask...but does 720p recording work? I may try and flash tomorrow again for further testing...but if someone can provide an answer I will probably just run it.
So far this is really cool. I'll put it through the ropes at work. One thing I have noticed so far is the trackball wake. It works intermittently.
Works as follows.
When plugged in (charging) trackball wake works. I can unplug and it still will wake.
BUT once I unlock the slider trackball wake doesn't work until I plug the phone back in, in which the exact same process is replicated.
Not a big deal to me, but I wanted to report it.
Any idea where speed dial is?
As far as I know there is no speed dial for AOSP. Use a dialer like DialerOne for that functionality.
And can either one of you please let me know if 720p works? I heard it wasnt possible.
This applied to all GB AOSP for the time being:

So I installed a Go Launcher theme and didn't like it. When I removed the theme it kept the wallpaper. No biggy.
I went to change it under wallpaper and had Nexus Wallpaper options which gave me the nifty little lines moving etc. Now I can't find that option anymore.
Any suggestions? All I am left with is gallery or the usual stock options. Not the wallpaper that loaded when I installed the ROM.
Thanks.
Do you have any screen shots available?
I had the additional Nexus Option. If it helps, I recall one background was CyanogenMod then maybe 5 others colors. I could also choose the animation.
These are currently the options I see.

FWIW this is very stable. It's the only GB ROM I have tried and I chose it because the install didn;t involve multiple cache clears etc. It seemed very straight forward. The trackball wake doesn't always work. It always works when plugged in, but when running on battery I have to hold it down or sometimes click multiple times.
A couple times the Notification power widgets go away. I got them back by rebooting. If there's an easier way let me know. Zero issues with SMS. Zero issues with Touchdown activesynch email. Zero issues making receiving calls. Bluetooth is fine. Rhapsody works.
I don't use 720p video so no big deal there for the moment. I work in field sales. I use my phone ALL DAY. If there's anything you want me to test let me know.
^^^
+1
I have tried most of the Gingerbread/Gingersense ROMs and this ROM has the most "stock" functionality. I like that I can play my MP3s from the phone storage; most of the others haven't figured that out yet.
So I flashed this last night and im still testing it...but as far as AOSP goes I lilke it alot.
It seems like it has similar CM7 tweaks but is faster overall...
Camera is quicker...which is a plus. Not sure if I love the gingerbread launcher...its a little slow when I open app drawer and I would prefer a non 3D app draw to get some extra speed back.
Nice ROM. Lets see if it stands the test of time

I have been using it for a week and it has been running great. I have gotten my highest Linpack and Quadrant scores with this ROM. I switched yesterday to ADW as the launcher, it is also running very smooth and fast on this ROM.

BIG Launcher

Been playing around with the free version of Big Launcher a bit before I decide if it s worth making the $5 plunge for the Full Version,.. It just might have some potential on the Rooted Nook..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ua3VuZXMuYW5kcm9pZC5sYXVuY2hlci5hY3Rpdml0eSJd
Thoughts?
Looks nice and clean enough for the home screen. However the added functionalities (phone, contacts, sms) might make it a bit too bloated. At the moment I'm quite happy with launcher7 with minimalistic icons and visual effects stripped off.
Can you please post some screenshots or photographs on how it looks on the nook screen?
I just started playing around with the free version, so havent done much, but I think zecoj may be right. It looks good, but seems a little bloated..

I'm trying to minimize memory footprint and keep things simple on my NST. I've gone for a "Launcherless" approach, trying to avoid ever seeing the Launcher as much as possible. I don't like to spend a lot of time playing with the device. I try to focus on USING it for reading and productive things. The last thing I want to do is make my nice little Android device look like a poor wannabe imitation of a Microsoft product!
1. Most of the time, I use my reader for ... reading. I use the Mantano Reader to completely replace the B&N Home, Library and Reader apps:
2. When I'm doing something else, I usually only use a handful of apps (4) bound to the B&N QuickMenu using Nook Touch Tools:
3. If I need any other apps, I go to my ADW Launcher EX home screen. Very rarely do I get this far, and anything else is in the app drawer:
I could use ADW Launcher to save a bit more memory, but ADW EX lets me get those big icons. It's a pain to configure since some of the menus don't show (white text on white background), but I've figured it out with a bit of poking around. Once I've done the basic setup, changing things around is simple and quick.
I've previously used FolderOrganizer to get quick menus on the Notification screen, but I didn't like having yet-another launcher running in the background.

Split Screen to Split Top

Please bear with me if this seems like the dumbest post in the world.
Ok, so right up until a few weeks ago, i loved the split screen feature on my phone. It was as easy as hitting the square button on the bottom, choosing split screen on one app, app folds itself up creating a space below, and then selecting another app to share the screen with. Easy peezee. Could have a video playing in VLC while perusing rss feeds in Newsfold, either on top of one another in portrait mode or side by side in landscape etc. Even my long dead grandmama could do this.
Fast forward to one day last month, i download some usual pixel update prompted by phone, only to discover my oft used split screen is now no more, but now "split top". It doesn't split the screen like it used to do, and i can't figure out how this split top thing is supposed to work. Plus it always says "Pixel Launcher keeps stopping" after several attempts to use the split top function, which is indicating that Pixel Launcher has crashed. But i din't use Pixel Launcher or have it as my default, i've always used Nova Launcher.
Basically i was doing just fine until whatever this update (which i am assuming is 12L) that has ruined split screen for me.
Is there a way to go back to the old split screen way? Or, how the heck do you split screen with this "split top"? I searched around the web and can't seem to find a solution.
I'm really not enjoying my device or being as productive as i used to be.
Hello @LordLugard I just registered to reply here.
After wasting so much time trying to fix this bug on my end, and several factory resets where it didn't fail at the beginning but then it eventually did, I found the solution on another post of a different forum:
-Turn ON system animations.
That's it. That's how it got solved. If you turn them off, the new split screen doesn't work at all. I'm afraid this must be an Android 12.1 bug because I had the exact same bug in a Poco F2 Pro with Lineage 19.1 and Trebuchet as launcher, so it's not phone model specific, not ROM specific, and not even launcher specific.
I hope this helps someone

Thanks for the reply.
Where would you "Turn ON system animations"?
I have it in:
"Settings/Accessibility/Text And Display/Remove Animations"
I had this switch on (meaning no animations), what caused split screen to crash. Turning it off solved it.
Hmmm, doesn't work for me. Mine was already in the "OFF" position.
What the heck was ever wrong with the old simple way? It just worked.

Bummer, sorry that it didn't help. It just did for me.
I don't think so, but maybe you activated Developer options, and then changed the value of the animations scales?
Just to discard animation related settings.
I'm afraid I'm of no help beyond that
Well, what do you know...a bit of success.
Since time immemorial, i've always turned off animations in Developer Options to 0, as i do not care for all the fluffy visuals.
So on a whim i decided to tinker and set it to the lowest value, 0.5x, and that seems to work now. But the implementation is so much different than the old way, will take some getting used to. The old method was so much better.
Thanks for the input.
I'm glad it helped at the end!
I fully agree on everything, I don't want animations either, but we're stuck with them if we want split screen as long as they keep this bug...
Also not a fan of this new and worse split screen method. You press Home and both apps are gone.

1,000% this. I'll be returning my brand-new Pixel 6 and returning to my old phone which will never even be eligible for A12
