[FIX] Lag fix for cm10 based roms (cm10, paranoid android, jellybro) - Galaxy Tab 2 7" Android Development

I posted on this to galaxy nexus and nexus 7 forums earlier and it should work on here as well. Its makes a huge difference. Let me know if it works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31266644
I have a fix for the lagginess in builds from the past week and a half or so. The culprit is the surface flinger library. It is the android compositing system and some changes recently made to it are responsible for the significant lag in recent builds. Most noticeable spot is if you hit the home button if you have the notification drawer down. It becomes extremely laggy without this patch. Scrolling is also less smooth whenever multiple things on the screen are being drawn. This fixes all those issues.
Just flash this in cwm or whatever recovery you choose. Should work on all cm10 builds and cm10 based roms like paranoid android.

[Q] CM 6.1RC2 or MIUI

like the title said. i'm confused about choosing CM 6.1RC2 or MIUI.
i like the CM so much, but i had so many restart with no apparent reasons on RC1.
so with the new release of RC2, i just wondering what if i tried other ROMs too.
i tried nxsense, but somehow, it feels laggy in my N1.
and then i stumble into MIUI article (and video), and it's look very smooth and the music player look really cool.
but i hate the "iphone" look.
in contrary, CM has honest-to-goodness easiness and simpleness, also the "you-can-change-it-however-you-like" customization.
so in conclusion, what do you think, should i update to CM 6.1RC2 or try MIUI?
thanks before.
oh, and this is the article i mentioned above

Definitely RC2.
just flashed the rom, and i know it's wicked cool. but i like the weather widget, and the music player from MIUI. otherwise, i'm pretty much love it.

MIUI you can change it however you like with more options. Granted I have been a CM fan since the first release a long long time ago. If you are worried about an iphone look .... this rom is so far beyond an iphone look its not every funny.
If you want an app drawer just put all programs in one folder and move it to the bottom of the screen like an app draw. Or Use launcher pro there is so much you can do either way. hell you can change themes on the fly with out flashing lol.
Bottom line try them both. thats why you are rooted right :^)
CM team can use a bit of design for sure. MIUI team knows a thing or two about it.
CM 6.1 RC2 with the iNexus Theme.

[Q] What's your favourite ICS for Nexus One?

I'm curious...what is everyone's ICS distro of choice for the Nexus One?
i.e. BCM / TexasIce / MIUI
No bashing allowed...only critical conversation please!
I'm using BCM as I like to have the Cyanogenmod features.
+1 for BCM9
BCM is running pretty smooth and with good features.

Damn.
That's a lot for BCM.
I'm currently running TexasIce. No problems. Smooth as silk.
What does BCM have over TexasIce? Have they fixed the video camera FC?
CyanogenMod 9 I don't care about the video camera, rarely use(d) it.

Gotcha.
So what does BCM have over TexasIce? I'm in no way trying to poke holes in anybody's preferrence. If anything, I'm looking for a reason to flash BCM here. Is BCM basically just TexasIce with the CM9 toolbox? Is one any more "AOSP"-ish than the other?
As I said, BCM has CyanogenMod 9 over TexasICS. I got really used to CM7, and CM9 is no different (some functionality is still missing though). I tried TexasICS a few times, but I feel like BCM fits my needs more than TexasICS. I don't have anything against TexasICS, and I don't think people should see these 2 ROMs as opponents.

I got you bro, but my question is still pretty unanswered.
To begin with, I'll say that I LOVE the CM team and all their work. The CM ROMs are minimalist, yet customizable, ultimately providing an android experience that's unadulterated by even the slightest carrier modifications. Plus it's tailored for the power user.
I know this, but that's not quite what I'm looking for in the answer.
I'm simply wondering, besides being associated with the cyanogenmod team, is BCM more stable/closer to being a complete, bugless AOSP distribution of ICS than TexasIce?
I gather that they have not fixed the video camera FC- something that's not a big deal to me.
For example, this is the list taken directly from the TexasIce thread of things that are NOT working:
Gapps might not work properly (search the thread for fixes before posting issues)
USB: MTP / PTP / Tethering
wifi ad-hoc (might work)
Builtin alarm clock app doesn't work 100% of the time.
Click to collapse
*Anything in blue doesn't really bother me...and the gapps issue is an old wive's tale
I'm curious about whether the stock alarm clock app is buggy in BCM as well, though.
While it's not on the list, an FC when hitting 'record' in the stock video camera app is the only other major issue. Apparently this is due to having to fix something with the stagefright video encoder
What I'm wondering is- Has BCM fixed ANY of these things as of right now? Or are both ROMs on the 'same page'?
The Gapps that I installed with BCM are all working 100%. Never had any FC or freeze. The USB issues I wouldn't know because I never use it for anything other than ADB/Fastboot. Wifi idem dito. Alarm clock is working 100% for me, never missed any early class. I don't believe I've read anything about the alarm clock not working in the BCM thread
Also, I believe BCM doesn't have the Screen of Death which some TexasICS users are experiencing. But it's the same with every ROM: it can work perfectly on one Nexus One, while it sucks on the other.

Awesome bro that's what I'm looking for.
Ultimately, I've got no real allegiance to one brand or the other. As I said, I love the CM team and what they do. I'm all about results though, and if they're a bit behind TexasIce than I'm not interested.
By the sound of it, though, this isn't the case. I appreciate your input man.
Just flashed TexasIce ICS yesterday, but it looks like I might be flashing BCM today.
Thanks again for the info bro.
Just wait a few hours and somebody else would recommend TexasICS
Please let us know what you think after you've installed BCM!

Yeah, likewise, I haven't tried TexasIce, but the known problems listed as being present in TexasIce (aside from video recording), are non-issue in BCM.
One thing I did discover though - if you take TexasIce's latest Kernel (he posted it in a thread) and put that in BCM, BCM becomes just as fast (or faster) than Cyanogen Mod 7! No hindrance on battery life either. I was in shock - a full speed / slick / stable ICS on Nexus One...now if the video recording / camera scanning features were enabled, this would be 100% fully operational.
I have used both.
Both are equally good and stable but I was on Bcm at the end for a while before I switched to sensation xe.
I preferred bcm due to no SoD issues(drewis kernel solved it later on also) , ease of install and configuration also I was having 3-5 random restarts on tesaxice but seldomly had on bcm, once a week if any.

Really quickly, I know BCM is ported from the HTC Desire/Bravo CM9. Now, I know the Desire and the N1 are almost identical, the only differences being the N1's trackball and capacitive buttons (as far as I know).
So, question: Does the N1 port of the Desire's CM9 distribution have all the N1's hardware working correctly? Trackball wake and notifications? Any/everything else?
Ultimately, even though it's a port, is BCM being developed with the N1 in mind?
Thanks for the info fellas.

I looked at some videos of CM10 on YouTube but besides the ability to put widgets on the lockscreen, I didn't see all these features and tweaks that you're referring to. Can you expand on that? Also, what do you mean by "more control over your device"?
I'm not downplaying or dismissing CM. Just trying to understand why it's so popular.

This CM10 Preview is a VERY basic build, and will probably not have as much of the added functionality that CM9 would have (this is something I assume as I have not flashed this ROM yet). CM allows you much more control over customizing your device by adding more options under Settings, and also by including tweaks / fixes / new features. Things such as themes, Advanced Power Menu, more control over navigation bar, themes (yes I said that twice for a reason ), different launcher.
It also, in many cases, can make your device more responsive / faster by removing a lot of the 'bloatware' and unnecessary background apps that some manufacturers out in their ROMs.
Gotcha. Thanks for the rundown.
They would have a hard time to get me to use CM again, I once had a so-called "stable" build of CM 7.03 on my Desire last year and it had to be rebooted almost every day to fix a glitch here or there, presumably because of all the hacks/tweaks they use. Problems went away after going to a pure AOSP ROM.
Remember this is just a preview.

Not sure if this has been asked on the forums, but can someone please tell me exactly, what is the difference between this and CM10[JellyBro] Nightly Kangs? I want to use the latest one as possible. Also, I know this is the Nexus 7 forum, but the same can be said for the Galaxy Nexus (maguro). Are the JellyBro Nightly Kangs the way to go for the latest CM10 previews?
Kangs are not official, this one is. I would recommend sticking with official since we got it now Official nightlies should come soon too.

Heh, jk. Looks absolutely fabulous!!! I'm continuously blown away by the CM team. I can't wait until this is stable enough for a daily driver. This is my first tablet so I can be a little more daring. Nightly are almost always stable enough, but now that I have a phone AND a tablet it'd be all right to tinker even more so with the tablet.
This won't be good for my flashing addiction. We need a support group for all the married dudes with upset spouses lol

The ONLY difference between a nightly kang and an 'official' build will be cherry-picked features that have not been added to the official version. Usually, these are small tweaks that will within a week or two be added to the official releases.
There are no other differences. Stability will, almost inevitably, be the same between the two.

Cyanogen Mod has come a long way. CM is in 7.2 stage for the Desire HD at the moment. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Not once have I gotten a force close a random reboot or any other issues on CM7.2. Just because you have one bad issue, doesn't mean it should stop you from using their other roms. Remember you flash custom roms at your own risk and the word customer should make you expect issues here and there. :cyclops:

Niks Jellybean Evolution vs Codename jellybean, go!

title says it all...
Like I said in the thread
Both are very similar performance wise, and probably battery too since they have the same AOSP base and minimal changes
But I find CNA has more tweaks, it seems JB evolution is missing some things in rom control compared with Ice Cold and other AOKP roms, inclusing official AOKP B1 on my N7
I am sticking with CNA for the moment because there are more tweaks I use
I found with my N7 that roms were only different when it comes to looks, with JB as there is smoothness already
Kernels IMO are the biggest difference with JB, they are the hottest topics in the N7 section

I've tried only Codename yet and noticed one unpleasant distinction: the color rendition is different from the one that I get used to. It's much more greenish and yellowish. It's well-seen when you are browsing web pages or use reading apps. The lower the brightness, the uglier the color tint. I have no ideas on how to influence that

My two cents, for a total of 10 hours running Codename. Previous ROM was the May version of Playground ICS (last one posted on XDA).
Maps run well, email has come in and what I've used works, today will be the "acid" test, I know Nik is going to update the Kernel on it so I've not loaded all my apps just the ones I need to get through the day. Texts work well, and Dogcatcher works. I took a few photos and the camera was a little odd but the pictures look good. I will edit and update as it goes to 24hrs of use.
I think codename is better cause has more features.
My report back, Full Day of work, a few phone calls several emails and me playing with GPS just to play with GPS (never worked well in Playground ICS). 16h 20m on battery and I'm at 27%. no crashes or need to reboot. BTW this is the codename version.

I've been running Codename for a few days now and it's one of the most stable roms that I've used. I did try Evolution for a bit, but I preferred Codename due to the extra features that it has, but you can't go wrong with either. Certainly some tweaks need to be made, but I've never had a crash or performance issues.
I am absolutely loving codename jellybean. its super fast and there are no force closes Thanks a lot Nik
I have flashed both and can't decide which one i like better?! Nether less they are both awesome roms! :good:
I have flashed both, tried each out for a day before I decided on Evolution, even though it has fewer tweeks something was just that more alluring. I am always amazed and greatful at the skill of the coders on XDA. I found both have similar FC problems on certain apps, which should help development and updating, if my common sense works.
No freeze yet. The only thing I have is my widgets disappear after reboot and I reboot because fonts go "fuzzy"

I am running Evolution and whenever I play a video it force restarts the phone after a few seconds. This includes with three different media players, plus the YouTube ad, although games run fine.
EDIT: Also crashes when using the camera (stock and 3rd party) when having the camera on for about 30 seconds. Also, I tried the Codename ROM and the same thing happened.
One more thing; I think the Codename ROM is actually smoother then the Evolution ROM.
Second EDIT: This fixed the video playback;
YouTube/Video playback reboots phone
This could be due to flash

[Q] Incredible S JellyBean Roms Comparison

There have now been severel JellyBean ROMS released for the HTC Incredible S.
I was hoping that I could get some opinion on how well each one is working.
So far i have found the following ROMS:
Codename Android and JellyBean Evolution by Nic
There is a comparison of them here.
The thread pretty much outlines that they are smooth bountiful ROMS which they are. They work really well, however, I have noticed some extra things wrong with them other then the outlined ones:
-Loudspeaker does not work and breaks the mic for the call.
-Sometimes the text on the homescreen becomes blurred, you have to lock the screen for a while to get that to go away.
-The full screen videos crash the phone, the fix doesn't work on my phone.
The next ROM i have seen is the CyanVivo X mod. I haven't tried this one but it seems like it has all the same problems. Front camera doesn't work. Full screen vids etc.
There is one that has been released recently:
It is an unofficial CM release:
It seems to have solved all of the problems with the ROM, the front camera works, it seems like it is quick, the only thing it doesnt handle is video camera. Can anyone tell me about problems with this ROM.
I was hoping to make a good Thread which compares each of these ROMs and which ones are the best?
The first two are just ROMs to say you have JB on your phone, both are buggy but some people can live with this and use them daily. These were the first JB ROMs, the same Dev got them running then support stopped.
CV10 is the breakthrough JB ROM, Dev working on it and the ROM has potential. More stable than the first two ROMs as Dev focusing on the kernel, currently still got a couple of bugs which some people can live with to be able to use the ROM daily. Keep an eye on this thread for development progress and regular feedback.
CM10 has a ninja for a Dev, works in the background and appears absent from the forum. Then ROM appears. The ROM currently seems to be the most stable/complete JB ROM and has least bugs. Many people using this as a daily use ROM. But is the Dev still working on it to perfect it, how long until the next update... nobody knows!
I tried this ROM, battery life seemed short, I struggled to get a days normal use from one charge. Plus I wanted my video camera to be working so I can film my young kids when I needed to. Back on ICS/sense ROM now.
These are just my own crude opinions.

there is a paranoid android JB ROM by Nikhil: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863862
I had used the ones you have listed below as well as the paranoid android ROM.. i found the paranoid to be less buggy...give it a shot.. it is a very different visual experience.. the rom is based on CM9.. you will have some minor issues:
1. front camera won't work
2. Adjusting in call volume resets the ringtone volume
3. Google now may not work..
4. tablet mode won't have an option to enable USB connectivity...
...
Give it a try; apart from the above issues, it is a very stable ROM; i was on it for about 6 months with no issues..
1. It is a different experience altogether - not many tweaks is what I found but a visual delight
2. google now issue will be resolved after you flash the "4.1 to 4.2" package; it will also introduce photosphere: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991734

I was hoping to make a good Thread which compares each of these ROMs and which ones are the best?

there is a paranoid android JB ROM by Nikhil: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863862

From reading the thread on the paranoid android it looks like it has more bugs then the Unofficial CM ROM. Things including permenant sleep and crashing with full screen video, which i experienced with the original ROMS from Nik.
The only problems I have with the Unofficial ROM is that the battery drains quite quickly (About 10Hrs on Battery with Juice Defender Pro), it can be a bit Laggy at times which i didn't experience with Niks ROMS and sometimes it doesn't quite wake up properly, (The button lights come on but you have to wait a bit for the screen)
Hi,
My experience with the ROM was different.. yes is an issue with the full screen video but the thread mentions the solution.. I did not have any issues with phone not-able-to-sleep... the battery was also good - it used to last atleast a day with good usage on calls...
With tools like 'Easy Battery Saver' it even touched 2 days with normal usage..
I was on the ROM for six months with no issues.. also i did not use the default launcher bundled with the ROM; I had installed APEX launcher rather..

Try turning off network based location in gps settings and rebooting the phone. it's a known bug with cm. :/
Are you only looking at CM/AOSP/AOKP roms?
I really don't think any are ready for daily use. Every one I used I thought was okay, then I needed to use the camera or some setting and it would crash. I'm going to wait for szezso to make a fully working kernel.
I think I'm going to test lacoste right now though... I'll tell you what I think.

I've been using dla5244's Unofficial CM10 for more than a week now. It's definitely a daily driver. With v2, even camcorder works wonderfully. I believe the v2 kernel is full featured and I can find no bugs at all so far.

Lacoste is just another version of unofficial.. For me i prefer unofficial because dla did all the work, but in lacoste, it is just a couple of tweaks based on dlas rom..

I tried CyanVivo X, and it was awesome, except neither WiFi nor Bluetooth would turn on. I'll give the unofficial CM10 ROM a try!

I've been using Unofficial CM10 since it was released and scrolling is as smooth as it should be.
What CPU governor are you using? I once switched to Interactive with some bad tweaks which resulted in something like you're experiencing now. After switching to ondemand/smartassv2 everything is fine now.

Actually I read your previous thread about battery life so I tried it myself. Maybe I screw something up.
