Launcher - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can somebody try running a different launcher for me? Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I just got into a friend's HD. It's proving to be quite a hassle to get another launcher running. Tried Launcher Pro just for kicks, and I don't even get an option to choose my launcher after pressing the home button. Defaults can't be cleared from the Applications>Installed Applications menu for the Kindle Launcher. Trying Nova or Apex next but it doesn't look good.
I'm glad I got my Nexus 7 after looking at this Amazon-ridden mess.

If I cant even install a launcher I probably wont buy one. My nexus was good, but it has slowed down, and has screen ripple and screen lift
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah, just got ADB working and tried to install Nova that way. No luck.
I've had my Nex7 for a month or so now and it's still running smoothly. I do change my ROM often though. The only hardware issue I've noticed is some issues with the digitizer. It seems to touch things when it's sitting. It may be my screen protector but it seems like a widespread issue.
Edit Again: Make sure your back housing is secured correctly. I noticed mine was starting to ripple quite badly (after I got curious and removed the back cover) until I gave the back cover a good squeeze all the way around the device. It went away then. I've also read adjusting the corner screws under the cover fixes some of the ripple, LCD bleed, and lifting of the digitizer.

I tried some of that but didnt seem to work. Thank you for that. Shame because I really want too. I am experiencing lag that bothers me the most. Thank you

Are you running stock? Its odd for the Nexus 7 to be laggy.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

Yeah. It isn't to laggy, other than in thebapp drawer it will lag . It isn't as fast as it was before. There is an thread bout it

Not being a mod but can we stay on topic please? This is KF7 forum not N7. Thanx.

Back on topic, here's some info about alternate Launchers:

Wow. I hope there is for this

Try ADW Launcher Ex apk from 4shared.com.
It is running fine on my kfhd. I don't dare hit the home button or reboot afterwards, I'll just put it to sleep and hopefully be able to enjoy this launcher with ICS going forward and not the carousel.
I'll add widgets and a theme soon and see what happens.

Would the Default App Manager application from the Play Store not solve the problem of not being able to select a different launcher?

No I guess not, since all it does is present the standard Application Info screen. Kinda lame.

Eh? I am running ADW launcher ex and it works fine. The home button just takes you back to the stock amazon launcher but then you just start up ADW again through the icon. It's a pain having that extra step since you can't change default but it's still 100x better than the amazon carousel.

Well initially I wasn't sure what would happen if I hit the home key or turned off the KFHD, I didn't want to lose the alternate launcher.
I know now it created an icon in the apps to get that launcher back when you want it. Better yet, I just leave the icon first in my carousel to get access! It is a million times better than the carousel but I think I remember from the first KF, I had to go back and clean up the carousel since the alternate launcher leaves a trail of what one does so I just did it when I turned my KF off at night for good.

did you do anything special to put it on your KFHD? i've tried installing several launchers, but can't ever find them in the app section of the amazon launcher

Thanks for the tip. ADW is working great for me. Well, maybe not as good as it was. In the process of trying to change the wallpaper it got stuck on the Yellow Flowers.. I've cleared data, cleared cache and uninstalled and reinstalled. Heck, I'd be happy now with the wallpaper that first installed on it. I really like the ADW launcher compared to Amazon. Not sure I can hang with the yellow flowered wallpaper tho. Any ideas?

I don't mean to troll and please don't consider this a personal attack or anything but in a previous post you referred to the KFHD as an "Amazon-ridden mess" and are glad you got your N7 but you seem to put up with a lot just to have the N7....i.e. ghost touches with the digitizer, ripple, screen bleed , screen lifting not to mention fragile screen glass being reported in other XDA threads. The other poster complains of lagging which you fob off as not much of an issue but there is an entire thread on XDA devoted to this and what seems to be either an IO issue to the memory or a real problem with the type of memory being used. Yes, we know the KFHD is a closed ecosystem and many Android devotees would walk across glass before buying such a thing but you still need to have some perspective. Too many here seem to excuse a lot of issues with the N7 just because it is pure Android. The things you excuse in an N7 seem to me to be severe hardware issues. You and others don't seem to mind cause it's pure Jelly Bean. I'm willing to put up with some software limitations as long as I can sideload apps just to get what seems to me to be superior hardware and what looks like superior build quality. I can wait for the unlocked bootloader.

All I can think of is uninstall ADW, download the apk file again form 4shared.com, install it and just take the defaults on the options screen for ADW.

Nothing will show up but ADW launcher, everything else I tried for launchers said they installed but one cannot get to those other launchers.
Download the apk file for ADW Launcher Ex from 4shared.com and install it. Once you open it, it will create an icon automatically afterwards.

Honeycomb launcher

Just curious what the GTab owners that are running HC are using as their default launcher? I just flashed HC today, and actually intend on keeping it for a while. My problem is, I really miss using launcher pro on my Froyo roms. Just the ability to resize wigets and define columns and rows is invaluable. I've been reading on Xoom forums that many of it's users have actualy reverted back to ADW or LP. It's also been said that the HC widgets (scrollable) will still work, regardless of the launcher used.
SO...easy question, anybody go back to VTL or LP in lieux of the stock HC launcher? I think I'll mess with it tomorrow and see if I like it better. The one thing I think I like about the stock launcher is the long press ot add items to the home screen.
I am in the same boat. The HC launcher sucks. Sure there are some aspect that are nice but nothing that would make me stick with it as a long term launcher.
I may try my LP+ a little later.

I don't think VTL is compatible with HC.

I was running it for a while to see if I wanted to go in that direction. I never really used VTL all that much. Sometimes too much customization can get confusing. It ran fine while installed, no FCs (well, no more than stock launcher or LP, anyway) and no problems with widgets, etc. I think they probably said that it wasn't compatible for Honeycomb so that folks that install it don't come asking them to fix things. i mean, technically, honeycomb itself is buggy, so until the firmware is stable, a launcher can't be blamed for any hiccups that may occur.
In any case. I ended up installing Launcher Pro, and frankly, I'm loving it. It doesn't have the same honeycomb feel when adding items ot home page, but really, I only do this occasionally, anyway. and the app drawer isn't the same, obviously, but all in all, I like how it looks, and runs. I can use the entire screen for widgets (and resize them BIG +) and icons.
The only thing lost is the dock that's at the top of the HC screens, with search, apps, and + (add item to home screen)
well, I never use search, and I long press ot add items, so all I needed was my app drawer access. I set LP for 1 dock, no background, then added the app drawer icon to the very bottom of the "dock" so it looks like a perminant app drawer icon right above the notification bar. Looks sharp, if you ask me.

So it does. I gave it another shot and got a pretty sweet setup I think.
So I switched over to LP+ and now my battery life while not on (in standby) sucks and now I am back to the random shut downs when trying to power up from standby. The way it used to with older ROMs witch had never happened with an HC rom.
Now I could be full of it but that is me experience since installing LP+ Take it for what it's worth.

[Q] newbie alert - installing other launchers on cm9

Hi
I'm using the latest cm9 nightly (20121223) and I'm using the default launcher which I think is Trebuchet. Like I say, I'm pretty new at this. Anyway, I was wondering if it was possible to use a different launcher such as Nova or GO without too much bother e.g. having to reinstall every time I flash the latest nightly. It"s not a big deal but some of the Play Store themes look pretty nice. I'd like the functionality of an app drawer, for example.
Thanks
FP

IDK about reinstalling after every nightly installation, but there are several in the Play store to choose from.
Trebuchet has an app drawer. Click on the 6 squares on the upper right hand side, that'll take you to the app drawer.
I tried several, but I came back to Trebuchet each time. Holo HD is the one I liked best.
Thanks. I probably didn't articulate myself very well earlier. When I said app drawer, I meant a permanent drawer at the bottom of the screen as appears to be in all the pictures of the other themes. I guess it's kind of like the iOS experience in that case.

Holo HD has the option for a 'dock' at the bottom, and so do several of the other ones. Apex is good, also.

Will a custom launcher hinder this phone?

It's a nice phone but I'm a themer at heart so I would be too tempted to put Nova or something on this phone the day I got it so I could install custom icons and layouts etc. Do you think a 3rd party launcher would cause lag issues on top of Sense 5? I suppose it would also make the blinkfeed screen disappear as well?

Putting Nova will get rid of Blinkfeed.
As for lag? I don't think so.

On that note, would blinkfeed still run using CPU/battery/RAM in the background if I were to install a 3rd party launcher?
Won't know till you really try it. I use Nova on my s3 and it lags ever so slightly. I can't stand touchwiz, so just deal with it.
There are many options we have though. If not feeling blinkfeed, just move it to a different screen and don't update it, problem solved for sense.

Disable all feeds and it won't do a thing.
I suppose you could always wait until the phone gets cm10. Sense 5 and blinkfeed won't even be on the phone anymore using up your ram.
Running Apex or Nova on this phone will hinder it just like wings hinder birds.
I use Nova on my S3 and no lag at all times (AOSP ROM) but when I get the HTC One ill just leave it as it is for now

If you're rooted, then just install Nova, go to /system/app and change the Launcher.apk to Launcher.apk.bak and reboot. Or delete it completely. Or use Titanium, back it up and delete it.
I guess I should have specified, I meant how they'd perform on the One without root on the phone as-is

Problem with alternate launchers-specifically 3D ones!

I just got a LG V40 and have been playing with it the last few days. Today I started trying 3D launchers and am having some problems. Nova worked great, but I want something with a bit more flare! I have tried the following::
1. CM Launcher-Works but seems to periodically lock when tapping on icons
2. Next Launcher 3D-Home screen icons are all over the place and the launcher settings do not launch
3. TSF Shell-I loved this on my LG V10, bit on the V40 most of the icons show up as blank generic Android robots
I tried another that I cannot think of, and it worked OK, but the text below the icons was cut off. Do these launchers possible have an issue with the high res screen? Right now it is running on its highest setting. Has anybody else tried any of these launchers?

I tried Nova also, but the others I mentioned have 3D settings that I like. I have used TSF Shell on my last two phones so I know the V40 has more than enough horsepower to run them.

I've tried some of the others but none of them really caught my attention unfortunately. I'm new to the LG v40 as well so I'm not totally sure what to think of it.

TSF Shell works if you install a 3rd party icon set. Works but crashes every now and then. I uninstalled CM. Love the way it looks, but could not stand the lockups. It would only lock when trying to open an app. Scrolling was not problem. I just uninstalled it. Will continue to try more and if I cannot find anything I like, will just go back to Nova.

Alternative launcher

Since 2 days i'm the owner of a MediaPad M5 lite. Choose this one for the price and nice looks. Only thing I'm not happy with is the EMUI launcher.
I have tried to install Nova Launcher, but it looks like the tablet is a phone as 'drawer' icons are not staying at the bottom (landscape) but they go to the right side of the screen...
Is there a way to resolve this or.... does anyone knows a launcher app which is perfect for this device (except for the default one)
Thanks
There is cpl that im currently using and it seem very friendly running on this tablet
I've found so far that Asap Launcher also works great for landscape mode tablets. been using it for over 3 years in different tablets. unfortunately it doent have a free version.
I use CPL. It's a bit glitchy but it works alright

Glitchy can turn into a boot loop as fast as your next reboot. Launchers should be faster, more stable and better than the stock one otherwise what's the point?
Stability is a paramount requirement as an unstable one is nothing but trouble no matter how much you like it.
Lol, 2 back to back forced reloads because of a goofy launcher impressed me
The only app to boot loop one of my Androids in 6 years. It wasn't the only launcher I tried that was unstable or glitchy; the hallmarks of inept coding.
If you findle around with the smallest width option from the developer settings, you will see that at higher values, any launcher will see the tablet as what it is, instead of a phone.
