alternative app store - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since the fire had is locked down, yet allows side loading, what are the best alternative app stores to use with this device. I've been using 1mobile,but wondered which ones others might suggest. Thanks!

The only other one I know of off hand is Get Jar.

"Freewarelovers.com" is pretty good as well.

"Androidpit.com" also.

You want to see this tablet at it's best check out

The xScope browser. After reading about it here earlier today I grabbed it and can't believe how it shows the ability of this tablet. I set the browsing agent as a "computer" and every site I've checked works flawlessly, including those with a lot of flash that didn't work before. Youtube videos look amazing and the speed is second to none.
The reason I wanted to mention it here is because so many people are working hard to make this tab the best it can be and I thought this shows what we have to work with. Personally this is going to allow me to do a lot more business work and makes the purchase a great move for me!
Sorry for getting a little over excited.

Can you please check www.bankofamerica.com? It fails for me using stock browser, and Dolphin HD and Lite. I have not tried other browser such as Xschope and Skyfire.

I use xScope also. Rothnic recommended it. Works very well. I went to the Bank of America site and it looks like it works. You didn't leave your account # so I can't really tell though It looks different in xScope than the stock browser.

Just checked it and it works perfectly. My account info looks exactly the same and I can make my mortgage payment just as if I were on my desktop/laptop.

Using stock and dolphin HD/Lite, login app falls behind some flash advertise, and no way to move the login applet front.
Yes, you can use Android App for BofA, but it is horrible. Too many crashes, and it works when it wants.
Damn, i left my tablet at home today since don't have decent carrying solution yet.. Really sux..

ah ok hopefully its fixed by the time i get my tablet since i do use the app alot.
I really didn't feel this thread needed to be moved. It's relevant to those of us working non-stop on the roms like TNT. It's important that we know what apps are making the most of the roms as a lot can be learned from that. I wasn't simply looking to review the app.
People love Dolphin and I don't know why. I have been using Xscope since it was free and I even paid for it now that it isn't and it just gets better with every update. It blows the other browsers out of the water!

On the contrary, this is related to a browser APP, which can be used regardless of which ROM is on your gTAB. Apps is the perfect forum for this post.
Tried the free version. Fancast didn't work for me in this one either. Flicker slideshows did working landscape...didn't in stock.

You're right had it been app review, which it wasn't. I was addressing those of us using certain roms.
Just a heads up. When I last used Skyfire the webpages were all generated on their servers. So unless things have changed I'd avoid using it for things like financial transactions.

Don't want to go on anymore about this too much, but this absolutely belongs in apps. You didn't say anything specific about a ROM, or development. You did give an app review about how it runs on this device. There currently is a lot of app related posts coming into development pushing down threads, and our mod is rightly so moving them.
On another note, I am on the list of of people who don't understand the hype on Dolphin and love xScope. I encourage everyone to try it.
Love loading webpages up, then hitting menu to go fullscreen. The toggle makes it great. Also nice swiping between tabs.
Can any one tell me where to find the xScope browser. Of course the crappy gmarket site the gtab has built in doesn't carry it.
I like XScope 6 a lot. Today I was able to watch a rental movie (from Amazon digital store) at full screen and no issues at all. The browser agent was set to "computer" with XScope and Amazon who needs the iTunes store?

[Q] Thundersoft for Android (multi window support)

I was searching for an app that would allow you to have multiple apps open on the same screen (multi windows support). I stumbled upon a proposed app from a company called Thundersoft. Looks like they were/are developing software to allow Android to operate more completely on different platforms, most notably for notebooks.
This type of thing would be excellent for tablets, but looks like they have never released an app of this nature. There are demos on their website, and articles describing the software, but they are mostly from 2009.
http://www.thunderst.com/android_netbook.html
Anyone know if there is anything out there that is similar to this? I'd love to be able to truly multi-task. I know this wouldn't work on a phone, but it just seems like this would be a great way to get more out of our tablets.
Here's a link to another write-up about the prospect of this app.

Thanks for the recommendation! Not exactly what I was looking for, but I love it! Was a little pesky to get it working, but now that I have it set up I am in love!
Your welcome I use it on both the gtab and the evo it allows me to switch between apps

Thundersoft is who actually develops the zpad ROM for Malata. If anyone has used the stock zpad build, you will see a lot of similarities in: http://www.thunderst.com/bigdroid.html
Interesting, I'll have to check into that.
Just seemed like the project as described in the demo videos for net books would be perfect for tablets. guess they are just developing for custom UIs and not developing an app to offer those features.

Quickoffice Pro HD available in the Market

Looks like Quick Office HD for the Xoom is finally available!!!
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.qo.android.tablet.am
We're supposed to get an ADDITIONAL 30% discount code by email when this is released, which is weird. And I wonder how we could do that and still have it in the Android Market. Whatever. Buying.
EDIT: Ah, it'd make sense for them to offer 30% off if you buy it outside the Market, they lose nothing that way. I'd rather have it tied to Market though, worth the extra $4.50
yeah I'm hoping that the discount applies to the market version as well so thats 30% off of 14.99. Their facebook page says the email will be sent out shortly once its available on their site.
This is awsome ... already downloaded and using it ... now I will be using my xoom at work
Ipad users watch out
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
There's no way you could apply a discount code to the Market. I'm guessing it's just if you buy through them, they sell it to you without the 30% Google gets when they sell through the Market.
So far works with Dropbox and did anyone notice that you can change width of the colums in the file manager
If you tap and hold the vertical bar and drag to the width of your liking

So if I buy it from them with the 30 % discount I won't get updates? That sucks ill just get the market version

Just a heads up. While I prefer having it from the Market because I like having all the apps I paid for in one place, there IS an Updates function INSIDE QuickOffice HD. So you can update it outside of the Market on your tablet.
After downloading and loading up a few different file types, It looks really good. Re sizing columns is awesome! Well worth the $ spent. Not worried about waiting for the 30% off. I will be using this heavily this weekend will report back any issues.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
here's a quick video of it in action. it's pretty much like the Notion Ink Adam version, but a bit more polished up! i love it!
Works awesome! Needs more options on the Powerpoint.
I bought it and am pretty happy with it. They've done a nice job with the honeycomb integration.
I've had Doc2Go for about a year on my OG Droid and it still has more capability in the word processor. Spreadsheets seem about the same. Quickoffice has overall better graphics/image display. It's interesting that quickoffice PowerPoint module cannot handle the graphics in the Docs2Go ppt sample.
I will probably continue to use both apps. I hope that either Quickoffice gets a better word processor or Docs2Go gets a proper honeycomb version.

Don't worry about the 30% off deal. It's all marketing. If you go to their website to buy it you get "40% off if you buy now" with a retail price of $24.99.
The $14.99 is the discounted price. May as well buy it from the Market.

Amazon Appstore app

I can't get the Amazon Appstore app to install. It gives me the message "Do you want to install this application? It will get access to:" then a list of areas and boxes for cancel or install. When I click install nothing happens. The cancel box works. (I did check the unknown sources in settings)
If it is being blocked by Google, that would suck.
I'm pretty shure its being blocked by Google.

Not true it's working for me. Go to Amazon& request a new link to be sent to your email.

Thats strange, i was able to do it on my N7. Maybe a reboot of some sort?
Works fine here. Go into Setting>Security and check Allow unknown sources. Go to Amazon web site and follow instructions to download and install. Did that to download an older version of a zombie killing game that works on N7.
Works fine for me. I use it every day to get the free "cr"app of the day.
Try rebooting it then re-installing.
If you're installing it from a previous backup from another device, it most likely won't work (not assuming you are, but just in case...) Like the others said, go to Amazon and get it directly and you should have no problem.
What worked for me was clicking the link for tablets. It says something like "no email or phone number, click here" and that downloaded the APK directly into my system download folder. From there it installed just fine. I had to do this to get it on my Google TV also. It seems to bypass some sort of test since the Google TV isn't officially compatible with it.
I just worked with an Amazon tech, got it to install using by going to this like in the browser on the N7.
http://www.amazon.com/app-email
Works fine now.
Mine installed fine. I used the APK from my phone. Got a bunch of the nicer FAOTD apps working perfectly too.

I find it incredible that everyone is giving Amazon a free pass for contributing to the Android Malware myth.
The fact you have to enable side loading on an Android phone to allow Amazon, means any other malware could also slip in. Using Amazon app store is a REALLY bad idea (plus the fact it's a barren wasteland compared to Google Play, and most of the apps are really out of date versions).
Surely the lure of free versions of old apps is not that strong that you want to open your phone up to allsorts of Android malware nasties?

Bugger the Apps they get games too. Of course only if you're from a certain country.
Majority of the free apps are a joke.
I usually check it every day and realize they're all trash (except maybe 2 apps so far) and then I uninstall it. For some reason I get struck with the idiotic idea that I may be missing out on some good free apps, so I stupidly install it again in hopes of some decent apps...... it never happens

That's what most people think. Once you discover what Amazon are offering for free is basically stuff that deserves to be free anyway, make sure you re-tick the Android security setting and revert back to the proper Android store that Google host.

When it first came out, it was great. Now, the free app is usually a very crappy game. In the past, I got:
Fancy Widgets Pro, Weatherbug Elite, Thumb Keyboard, App 2 SD Pro, Moon Phase Pro, Quickoffice Pro, SoundHound Infinity, Shazam, SwiftKey 3, and several other good ones.

1. I've never once gotten malware and I always sideload apps. I always leave that setting unticked as do most folks I'm sure.
2. having Amazon app store or any other app store doesn't change your default android Google play store.
You want malware, go download Blackmarket apps or pirate stuff, you'll get it then. I do suggest tho, that everyone should install a malware scanner. Avast, lookout, etc.

What? Side loading doesn't put you at any greater risk of malware. You always choose to install an app, whether you side loaded it or not.
Nothing wrong or risky with downloading the Amazon app store, being able to choose a different app store is one of the best things about android. CHOICE.

KHDF7 - Root for my kids device?

So he just got it but I would like to give him access to other apps (mainly GVoice for SMS but there are probably others his friends play too he would want) and wondering if its possible to keep it with Amazon. Primarily, it'll be media and book for him, I just want to make it fun too.
Also, are the default parental controls suitable for you parents or you using alternative means?
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas.

Kind of what I'm thinking. I read the rooting method, seems just as easy as my Galaxy S III. I want my daughter to be able to use Google apps and get rid of the lock screen ads. Still searching...

Doesn't seem like rooting is 100% safe, nor even near a 1-click just yet.. Kind of thinking I will hold off. Yeah, the ads and Amazon bloat is somewhat frustrating but he doesn't really NEED root at this point. Might be easier to manage his 11 year old activities without it..
Kind of thinking I will hold off. Also seeing TONS of people having issues rooting with either delayed or completely without any type of helpful response. I know the devs work hard on these things, I guess I'm just in the pool of waiting until the fog gets lifted a bit more. Definitely not trying to break this thing.

I am confused as to the question? Yes you can root. It's a bit odd though since the devices are new. If you're worried about it breaking I would say that greatly depends on how tech savvy your kid is. As long as he doesn't mess with root tools I think it should be fine. If you mean keep the amazon launcher and app, you will lose those. I assume some dev magic can do a nice workaround, but I wouldn't count on it.
You can still get all the play store apps like the kindle reader from there. The only thing I've missed is the x-ray feature it had for books and movies. The other thing you lose is prime.
What you gain though, is a usable tablet.
Like the other user said though, I don't see much dev support yet, especially for my KF2. So if you feel confident you should be fine. If you're just following steps though, I would proceed at your own risk, just in case.
if you wanna use prime get g play and get ota rootkeeper
