need dev help - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello devs! im trying to port a rom from the infuse, the zeus rom.i do not have permissions from the dev of the rom to port it so its only for personal use and for any one who can help port the rom. Unless dman the dev asks me to release publicly for the device. I googled how to do it follow step by step instructions and tried a few different base roms but i cant get it to boot(stays on i9000 screen) Ive tried to figure oet how to modify the updater script and whatnot but im kinda new to coding(I think this is where my problem is is in the script). right now its a learning process for me, I got a pretty good learning curve so i can catch on really quick. I really like the rom so i relly want to do it. I already sent dman a message asking for his expertice cause he built it so we might also get his help with the project. any help is great and you will be mentioned if it ever goes public.
Thanks!

bump cause i really want to use this rom

is this possible ????

i wanna try installing cyanogen modded rom onto my htc tattoo. if anyone has tried it or succeeded in ti or failed in it, please share your openions here.
i wanna know why i cant install it in my tattoo /what are the advantages of installing it/ from where do i get the information/guide to install it on tattoo....
if not possible, i wanna know the reason please... i am pretty sure, atleast someone must have tried doing this adventure... guys comeon please share your knowledge about this modded rom -cyanogen mod....
it's meant for a completely different hardware platform? unless you have a way of modifying it yourself to work with the tattoo's components, good luck!
i didnt get what you mean by completely different hardware platform... ????
because i have seen many HTC users with android on it, trying to install cyanogen mod ROM and most of them have succeeded in it....
its just a curiosity that i am asking here. even i dont know for sure why cyanogen mod doesnt work on tattoo or no one has tried installing/customizing for tattoo...
any input which helps us to install coocked rom/rooting tattoo would be highly appreciated.....
I'm not that much into this whole flashing thing, but as far as i know one of the main problems is that the screen resolution on the tattoo is different that on the hero, magic, etc.
This is the problem with all the apps on the market hero/magic. Those who work with hero, and magic, doesn't work on the tattoo. Not before the developer has modified the apps resolution on the app.
There is probably also other hardware in the phone, and therefore there has to be developed drivers that fit that hardware.
Hello!!!someone has proven to tutorials for the root htc hero or magic in the tattoo?
No. Not yet. If you don't know what 'root', 'superuser', or flashing means, I wouldn't recommend risking your phone doing the said activity. More for experienced people.
I am a newbie to android and in no way a developer...but am surely adventurous....I will also help in testing as long as step by step instructions are available...thanks so much for stirring up some interest in this...

Exactly! As soon as step by step instructions are available, people who own the tattoo and want to flash roms will be able to. For now, we just have to wait for a breakthrough.

when can we expect custom ROM's ???

guys, i cant wait to install custom ROM on my tattoo. i hardly congratulate those who worked really hard in getting this tattoo rooted...
but whats the real use when we cant play with this little device without exploiting it fully .....
sorry if i am humiliating all those who are actively involved in the development, but i am little more curious like rest of us. hence i am asking this question here....
roughly how long it will take to produce custom ROM after rooting a device ???
Expect an average development time between two days and one year but it might differ plus/minus 20%...
I understand your impatience but asking things that are already written elsewhere because the truth is reluctantly to believe ("nobody knows how long it will take") doesn't speed up anything! We don't write "We don't know" because we think it is funny to know more then the rest...
-bm-
Could you tell us what is needed for a custom rom? I'm new in android hacking, or mobile hacking in general. All I know is that for WinMo devices you'll need a hardSPL, application unlock and a RUU.
I think there will be less questions if we know what we're waiting for. Time is, at least for me, not really a question since there are numerous wonderful developers here and we all follow progress in the other threads.
For the tattoo we now have root access and r/w access to the file system. What else is needed? A new boot loader, a flash utility, kitchen?
I tried to find it elsewhere in the forum but information is scarce and/or scattered so it's quite hard to find out what is going on. Most information I found are howto's, but what we actually want here in this stage of development are whyto's .
Please, enlighten us

To easily flash ROMs, we'd need a S-OFF Bootloader and also a custom recovery that enables us to actually flash the ROM to the phone.
However, since HTC tried to play 'god' with our Tattoo/Click and bar off any root exploits or custom ROMs, it's tricky. We've had to play around with root, and now we've got the system partition writable, soon we can get flash_image to work.
Myself, I expect to cook a community ROM (CoburnROM 360) when we've got all the tools in place.
Online kitchen/automated tools like the Relentless Rom Roaster is a plus, but not a essential item to have on your arsenal. Real Devs use Linux and the command line!
Now, it's just a matter of playing the wait game. Dream about all the customizations in a ROM you'd like, and when the day has come (it most likely happen in the near future! ), we can plop the update.zip on the MicroSD, reboot into (custom) recovery and let the fun begin.
This is exactly the reason why I'm holding off with making root permanent on mt phone. I'll wait till everything becomes stable and more can be done with root, i.e. installing custom ROMs.

Good idea. Mine at the moment is temp root, I jsut run the exploit and do the export commands to get a shell, instead of hardwriting su in my Tattoo.
is the custom ROM ready ??? i want to test it on my tattoo simultaneously i wanna root it at that time itself... so if you succeed in preparing cooked ROM, pls post it here for testing.
i will test it for you.... cant wait for its release... keeping my fingers crossed coburn.....

The more you refuse to spend even 3 or 4 minutes to read through the forum, the longer you will have to wait for a custom ROM because you are stealing our time to develop one because we have to answer senseless posts. This time I won't post the link you are looking for because it will take you around 10 seconds to find Coburn64's thread - its just one view!
-bm-
@bm, there is no link for downloading a custom ROM buddy, i saw coburn's thread..... but there is no mention of when we can expect custom ROM.....
anyway, i thought you might be knowing the approximate date.... ok, i will wait till you receive.... dont waste your time.... carry on with your good work. i appreciate your contribution towards this project..... keep up the good work bro...

[Q] Rom Cooking .

Okay So Basically I Just Started Working With The Rom Kitchen Can Someone Give Me Some Pointers On How To Get A Specific Rom Booting or Anything Else I Need To Know ?
Man do yourself a favor a READ and search for awhile.... all you ever do is ask for handouts. Development is not easy. Its not just a matter of asking questions. You had 134 views of this page before I responded. That's 134 people that didn't wanna help you... if that doesn't say anything I dont know what will.

There is no specific guide to porting, developing, etc. As Matt said, read. And lots of it. I personally started by playing with aosp and CM source, but you currently cannot due to kernel.org being down, but you can go to my signature and read my thread on compiling aosp gingerbread on Ubuntu. It will help you understand how some things work. Try taking apart a ROM and learn the layout of the files and read up on what different folders and files are. The rest is really just trial and error. I started with no experience at all. Hell I still don't know any coding languages, but that's why I'm in college.

Unfortunately that guide won't help here - what he's looking for is a guide to making a device vendor tree when one isn't available.

The easiest way to start a device tree would be to follow this guide: http://xda-university.com/as-a-developer/porting-clockworkmod-recovery-to-a-new-device
Just remember this won't give you a full device tree. Another way would be to start with a device tree for a device similar to yours and change all the neccasary stuff to your device. By following that guide you could compare
Sorry if this isn't 100% accurate, I'm really tired

suggestions that should help alot

HI every body
thanks for everybody that works hard to get us these amazing stuff ...
first of all , i`m not a developer nor an expert or have any good knowledge about developing ... but i really want to enjoy these great roms and tweaks as everybody else .. so i have 2 suggestions that i really think that will help anybody just like me :
the first one is when a developer release a new rom , i really need a step by step installation method with links for every kernal or anything needed to install it ... ( i came up with this suggestion after i tried yesterday to switch from a rom to carbon rom , but unfortunatly the installation failed even after an other member tried to help me and gave me instructions what to try to install it )
maybe alot of you thinks that is a silly suggestion , but believe me that there is people like me that dont know about developing and want to enjoy these roms
the second suggestion that if you could make a thread that contains all developers roms and kernals and any other stuff and group it like : ( best roms for games ) or ( best visual looking roms )or anything like that ...
i don`t know if this is allowed in the xda forums .. but if it is , then it would be great .....
i know that some members will tell me to try it by myself .. but believe me i love to try roms by myself but i really dont understand every feature in every rom , actually i dont understand most of the features .. so if you do this suggestion it would be great
thanks again for everyone that works hard at this great forum , we all appreciate your work ... hope that you continue the great work

Hello.
1. Each new ROM, Old or New will always have complete installation procedure in the OP Page 1. Failure to install Rom can be reported in the thread or try addressing the dev directly.
2. I'll tell you this before our forum moderator tells you. Best Roms and such are in violation of XDA rules thus not allowed in XDA. Our kind developers created lots of ROMS for us users with the "BEST" interest thus it's up to us entirely to choose which ROM suits our preferences best. And since many of them are busy with their actual real life, I don't think any of them has time to maintain these 'links to here and there' thread. It's our user's duty to search and learn by ourselves and finally post a valid question in this forum. No offence really but your request is basically like asking your teachers to do your assigned homework.

about the the installation procedure .. not every rom has specific information about needed kernals or recovery mods (specially ) ...
and about the teacher thing .. i said that im sure that somebody will come and tell me that i should do it by myself and test the roms ... but to let you know that i tested 4 roms in just 10 days and tried to test the 5th but couldn`t install it ... thnx anyway

Not wanting to debate, but for kernels it's already stated that always use a safe kernel. When you come from a TW based kernel. Philz kernel is the best option to choose. As in KK roms, always flash a Raw 4/5 first as a base kernel, reboot to recovery n then u can always flash philz latest KK compatible recoveries (V.6.0.4 up) to do all wipes and formats before flashing rom. If you flash recent roms starting with 4.1 up, these are mandatory steps to take. The rest does not really matter.
Again I mean no offence, but I think you can see that each devs has painfully written all instructions in their OP so that's why I think it's really not fair for us to ask total guidance like that. And since you are able to flash test that many rom, u should already know what to ask in this forum.Again no offence meant. Thanks
