My Walmart Nexus 7 owns all my Google Play Nexus 7s. - Nexus 7 General

During the past 2 months I've gone through four different Nexus 7 tablets (two C6Os, a C7O, and C8O) from Google Play. All had loose glass on the left side that bothered me and the USB port on the last one even died. So I called Google and they are just giving me a refund at this point.
I went out and grabbed a Kindle Fire HD thinking about making the switch. And it's a nice tablet for Amazon content... but I'd really still like to have a Nexus 7. So I went out to Walmart and bought one, figuring I could at least return it quickly if it's messed up like all the rest.
I checked the box and saw it is a C8O. Opened it up and checked the glass. Oh my god, it looks perfect. The glass is just slightly below the silver rim on all side.

Same here, i got s C80 nexus 7 16 Gb at local walmart and ran my fingernail around the whoel tab and there is no screen lift. looked at all angles and no lift, no creaks, no sounds and no retarded loose speaker.
took the tab into a completly dark room and then turned on the tab to full brightness and performed a reboot and watched the screen around all edges and saw no light bleed. downloaded a LCD test app form the market and tested full brightness all colors including white and black and saw no light bleed anywhere.
im very happy with this unit and after 3 weeks no issues yet. (cross fingers)

Got mine (well my dad did) from the local office max, and yes the left side of the screen is a bit lifted very small though, only noticed if you touch it, and only "rises" if the tablet is hot. My cover is arriving soon and I am way out here in Brazil, so calling Google for warranty is kinda impossible lol!

I really am unsure if I have the screen lift issue. I noticed the left side is not evenly as low as the whole right side is. It isn't majorly uneven so I am thinking I do not have it. It really doesn't look like an issue, but I am scared if I do have that issue since I heard it can crack. Also, I was just squeezing the left side of the bezel and some SNAP sound happened, as if something snapped in place. I don't know what happened but my screen is working correctly, still.

If you can physically see it acting spongy under your touch, then it's screen lift. Basically the screen "flexes" - if not, then it's just poor mounting but probably not a problem in the long run.
My new N7 sounds a little like yours...on the right side the bezel is just a tiny tiny bit higher than the glass...on the left side, the glass is a tiny tiny bit higher than the bezel. However, the screen doesn't move or flex at all.

Glad to hear you finally got a good n7. The one I pre ordered had screen lift so I had it replaced and so far this one is great (knock on wood).

Creaky hardware?

Is anyone having basic build quality issues with the NC hardware? I just exchanged my first one because it had a mushy power button that didn't click, and the replacement i find makes a creaking noise whenever i grab it by the left side. I know it's going to drive me crazy if I don't exchange it again.
I haven't experienced any of those... in fact I find the construction to be quite solid. Bad batch maybe?
I returned my first Nook Color because there was a dust speck in the screen. I couldn't rub it out and it kept bothering me so I brought it back to B&N and they gave me a brand new one. I wonder what they will do with the one I gave them. Everything seemed to work except that one dust particle in the screen.
Mine had a dead pixel which awoke after a bit of use, but other than that (and I'm picky) it's been really solid. The touchscreen is a bit wacky at times, but that could be me - I have extremely dry skin and that can cause issues.

Funny, I am having the exact same issue with my NC. Creaky left side. Kinda makes a 'click' noise in about a one inch spot on the left middle by the screen. Kind of annoying but I suppose I'll live with it..
Definitely experiencing the creaking as well, and now I am noticing the back left side has some 'give' to it, allowing me to actually push it in slightly. The right side is perfectly firm. Anyone else notice this? Only had it for a few days, so if this is an isolated issue I will return/exchange it.
Thanks
+1 mushy power button here too.
no dead pixels though so I think i'm going to keep it.. I've got 'QuickBoot' installed anyways as a workaround
Mine is creaky, too. Everything that matters (to me) appears to be working well.
The top frame may be a 'snap-on' thing that snaps-on from right to left resulting in a bit of a space on the left side about a 1/3 of the way up. I'm sure most folks are sensing/feeling/hearing the 'creak', especially when moving through different ambient temperatures.
Touch and squeeze most of your devices (notebooks, phones) that are composed of different materials, e.g. plastic and metal, and, more than likely, they 'creak', too.
I have the creaking too. I thought about exchanging it but I don't really notice it anymore.
I returned my first nook color because of the creaking on the right side. It only happened after the device warmed up.
The second one is now doing the same thing on the left back. As much as I love it, it doesn't seem very solid.

Yeah i've got the creak top left corner. Doesn't bug me much but I do plan on keeping an eye on it.
I've got the creaky left side too. It hasn't bugged me too much, but the USB cable did catch on fire when I plugged it into my Nook this morning.
So that was fun.

The first NC I brought home had a dust particle right in the middle of the screen, too. Exchanged it, and the new one creaks right below the N button. No power button issues, though!

I'm thinking of returning mine too. I have creaking. Anyone else have a bowed panel where the home button is? The left side is about a 0.5 mm lower then the center and the right side is about 0.25 mm lower then the center.
Such a shame. It is nice device. Its the best built android device I have seen.

Seriously, the USB cable sparked and caught fire when I plugged my Nook Color into it this morning.
It didn't appear to damage the Nook, but the USB cable end is burnt and blackened.
Needless to say I'll be taking it back.
I'll take some pictures in a bit.
Took some pictures, I'll post them when I get 8 posts under my belt and can post pictures.

You know, that actually doesn't sound far fetched to me. For some reason the USB cable does not want to work in 2 of my known working USB slots. Windows gives me the standard "USB root hub has detected a power surge" message. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if it caught fire. I plan on seeing about a third party cable if I keep running into weirdness with it.

Does anyone have creaking sound without raised glass?

When I press(with a bit more force) on the left side I hear creaking noise, is that normal or not?
I don't have raised glass problem.

I have 2 Nexus 7. My Nexus 7 has a minor screen lift, but it's not noticeable. But yea it has the creaking noise near the upper left area. But then again I shouldn't like be putting that much force on the screen so I'm not too worried. My sister's Nexus 7 has no issues with either.
One of the mine did but it seems okay. That's why I think it is the back cover. Because of mine would squeak only if I held it from the back in certain areas. If I held if from another place on the back it wouldn't squeak like holding it from the other side and pushing down then the squeak would be gone. Mine usually would squeak right where the volume of buttons were.
Mine does the same no noticeable screen lift but it will creak if you press too hard on the left side

yes.
on the left side of mine its the screen that is raised and creeks. on the right side i think its the back cover that is causing the creeking
I had the creak, it drove me nuts. My screen didn't lift at all. I returned it for a new one with no creak and no screen lift.

You had to apply not a lot of pressure if it drove you nuts right? And you RMA yours for that single reason?

I bought mine locally at Sam's, so it was just a matter of taking it back to the store. I bought a new one at Staple's first as they got a new shipment in...of only one.
There was enough movement to make me uncomfortable with it. Not only did it creak on that lower left side with some slight pressure, I could also feel movement when I pressed on the lower left of the screen. Not like squishy movement, just a weird shifting noise.
It's as if the case was a little too large or slightly warped somewhere. I didn't have to press very hard at all to make that sound and it did it naturally if I picked it up from the side. I tend to be OCD so something like that is just one of those things I would fixate on. I also had a dead pixel so the combo was enough to take a trip to Sam's to return it and Staple's for a new one. The difference is night and day with the new one though, it feels so much more sturdy without the noises.
I ordered a case to try and ignore it, but that is still on it's way so the return was kind of an impulse. Honestly if your screen is fine otherwise and you aren't OCD like me, it shouldn't be a deal breaker IMO. Unless a swap is easy, but things could always be worse.
Mine does same, no lift but squeaks with little pressure.
This squeak is because of that black tap that you can see once you open your nexus. At least this was the case with me. The sponge on the top of tape presses the tape when you press the device on left side. I fixed it by removing that foam. I am not recommending anyone to do it as that foam must be there for some reason either to cater for the flex in back cover or something but this was driving me crazy so I removed it. Please don't do it because I am saying this as you might have some different problem. This was my problem and this is how I fix it.

Mine has a slight creak but only when I apply a moderate-high amount of pressure at a certain spot, which I don't feel comfortable doing anyway. Haven't taken the back off but not sure if I will tbh, using a case can alleviate some display issues I.e. screen rising and sight creaks.

Mine has a clicking kind of sound on the left side and the glass depress's about 13/100ths of a MM with little to no force and it was an open box. I will bring mine back as soon as I find a store with another one in stock. I also didn't get the 25$ credit on my Google Play account because the person who bought and returned it took the credit...
My main concern is for dust getting under the glass. If the screen has any kind of travel like mine does I can only assume that it may suck some dust in and under the glass in-between the display and the glass. I don't know if the display is fused to the glass like my Gnex.
I've found that taking the back cover off and putting a single, small piece of electrical tape near the edges in the areas that squeek eliminates the creak. If you have creaking in areas other than the left area where there's screen lift, it's most likely caused by the back cover not fitting perfectly against he device. I put some small pieces of electrical tape in the top right corner and along the bottom right side of my Nexus 7, and it has just about eliminated all creaking.
Mine creaked around the edges til I pressed down hard on them to clip it more securely in place. I've no other issues and the screen is great.

My second Nexus 7 has no screen lift but the power button clicks loudly when depressed about as loud as a typical space bar. Loud enough that others in my office can tell when I turn the screen on. The vol. rocker does not make the same click sound it sounds and works like the first Nexus 7 I owned. I don't think the louder click from the power button is a big deal and will likely get less loud with use.
Hi!
I got my Nexus 7 yesterday and I dont have the raised glass but I have a creaking noise when pressing down the glass on the left side of the tablet. When I press the glass it creaks and after a second or so you here a popping sound. This is the only issue I have with my Nexus 7. You guys think I should return it and get a replacement or is this normal? It only happen when I press down harder than normal.

I have the same problem and am trying to decide if its screen lift or just some weird noise. Advice guys?
Same problem - I've had this issue since I got my Nexus 7 two weeks ago and so far nothing terrible has happened.

Is my RMA nexus 4 really "BRAND NEW"

So I put in an RMA for my nexus 4 since my earpiece was not working, i got in on the first day of sale, and other then having to make calls through speakerphone, ive been extremely happy with the phone.
so i put in my RMA, and just received the unit 2 days ago. and i have some concerns.....
for starters, the screen on the replacement unit seems to have something wrong with it, cant quite figure out what it is, its not the common yellow spotting issue, its more of a washed out, lack of brightness issue. its not as bright as my original, and the whites seem dull and off-white, and the greys( particularly the settings menu) seem to have a yellow/greenish tint. I tried the color calibration apps (both the nexus 4 display app and the faux app) nothing seemed to work.i have taken pictures to show the differences.
another issue is with the back glass. If you see the pictures around the camera opening, my original has a noticeably bigger opening then my replacement, god knows why, but this ties in with the tittle of this thread and my concern, could this back glass have been broken and replaced by LG and passed off as a new in box unit?
the last piece of this puzzle is with the packaging itself, the box was new, had original black tape security tabs identical to my original nexus, also the screen protectors were in place as well, also identical to my original nexus. but what was definitely not present was the thin tiny strips of vinyl covering the chrome bezel, there was 4 in total on my original, this RMA unit had none, what gives?
so there is it, sorry for the long rant, just wanted to see what everyone thinks about this.
pics showing the difference in screen quality, original unit on right, replacement on left, also my original unit has the larger camera opening, let me know what you think.
Yellowing is normal with IPS Panels, it's the glue drying, give it a few days and it will be gone.
The camera lens has been discussed in other threads. It's apparently a hardware revision and makes no difference with the camera quality
I don't think my Nexus 4 had any plastic wrapping around the chrome finish. Anyone else?

There was none, the device was bare.
You seem to have gotten a rev 11. Give the RMA a week and then compare the screens. The yellow will be gone by then. As long as the yellow is uniform you should be good. Be grateful you didn't order an RMA this late and got an original rev 10. I think the 11s have better battery life and less light bleed. The rev 10 I received is awful... Came gritty and full of dust. Also had a nick in the glass underneath the factory screen cover, a black unfinished dot on the chrome, and a piece of debris under the glass. The yellow on my screen is only on the lower half of the screen. This is my 4th nexus. I have no. 5 on the way. Hope I get a good one the next time around.

How do you tell which revision it is?
well, now that you mention it, that was one of the things i did notice, was less light bleed, total darkness with black background, my original unit has 2 spots on the top with very small light bleed, the new RMA unit has a tiny hint of light bleed in the same spot.
so im suddenly feeling alot better about my replacement unit thanks to you guys, my biggest concern was the missing vinyl pieces over the chrome bezel, glad to hear its normal.
i still have 18 days to send out my original unit, ill keep using it daily with full brightness and compare after a week.
Also, where was the camera opening change discussed?

I would like to know this too.
just confirmed, you can check your "rev" model by booting into fastboot, (hold vol up and vol down + power)
so my original is a rev-10 manufactured in 10/20, my new RMA unit is a Rev-11 manufactured 12/10, i hope the screen improves

Mines a rev 10 and it's great, no issues, no light bleed, no yellow screen, none of that stuff.
The yellowing is not glue and it will no go away, my rma has a yellow tint and after weeks of use it is still there, my RMA also had the smaller camera hole aswell, waiting on my third nexus.
no vinyl on my bezel at all. Mine was not RMA.
Yeah, my N4 did not have any plastic on the bezel when it arrived BNIB. My RMA should come this week or the next (Bluetooth does not work on current device on Stock firmware and custom as well) and I will compare the two to see if there are any differences.

They've probably increased the gap around the lens so if the back glass cracks it cannot crack quite as close due to a bigger gap?
I also wonder what impact colours have around a phone camera lens because the black is quite reflective but the grey part isn't.

This sucks to hear..... So the phone itself is not bad, the screen seems great and bright, but when I put it next to my original nexus its amazingly noticeable, and that's what kills me!!! Knowing that I do t have the best screen experience possible, ugghhhh
I called in the issue and might pursue another RMA, but I think I'm gonna wait a while, perhaps "rev-12" or whatever comes next will be better, but the screen is killing me right now!!!
Mine kind of yellow. But I don't care really. I change my phone every year or so. So it's not really big deal. The screen very crisp colors are very nice.
I regards to the yellow tint... Does LG out source their LCDs? Reason I ask is because the comparison shots just look like different screen temps. When I was buying iPhones, this was a common issue because apple used displays from both Samsung and LG. I had bought two phones on the same day for my wife and I, both the same model, and my phone had a very blue (cool temp) hue as compared to my wife's, which was much more yellow (warm temp). Just a thought.

Displayglas failure on the left and right edges

Hey community i own two Nexus 4 devices and both have the same problem... Two different bags and one SGS 3 were needed to recognize the problem specially on N4 devices. The left and right curved edges and some parts of the rest of the display are very sensitive of wear.
How I recognized this?
I wanted to clean my display.
If i breath on it, spots will appear who wont mist that much than the rest of the display.
This spots are not removeable and susceptible for dirt and fat fingers / fingerprints.
The SGS 3 , that has the same curved edges hasnt got this problem althrough it has the same kind of glas : gorilla glas 2
My first N4 had this problem on the left side to the middle of the display where i scroll the homescreens with my finger.. My second N4 has it symmetric on each side after 2 weeks. A displayprotector holds back the wear of the rest of the display.
I sent an email to google and reported about my problem. If you have recognized the same kind of s**t , please post a reply and where these spots appear. THANKS
Most likely the oleophobic coating is wearing off in those places. It happened on my Galaxy Nexus and its starting to happen on my Nexus 4. I have a bumper on so the edges are fine. Its wearing where it rubs against my pants pocket.
No problem here after 2 months +.
@ el daddy : sorry but this normaly happens to a 1 year old device. mine are one month and one week old. and that homescreenscrolling causes such spots.. in light use after one month.. like i said... SGS 3 same glas, same curved edges, havnt got that problem

I don't get why you are condescendingly apologizing to me. I was just telling you what was happening and that it's happened with my last two phones. Yeah it's annoying, but there is no time frame on when it should or shouldn't happen. It doesn't matter if it's brand new or 5 years old. Enough friction will cause wear.
AW: Displayglas failure on the left and right edges
and thats the point. one month light usage. and the finger causes enough friction to wear the screen like a streak of 1 cm * 4 cm from the edge to the middle? i cant imagine

i am getting this on about a quarter of the screen, where the coating has obviously worn off. it must be from going in and out of my jeans but ive only had it for 12 days. kind of a shame, its most noticeable in bright sunlight, with low screen brightness.
do you think putting a screen protector over top would even out the appearance of the coating and hide the area where its rubbed off?
AW: Displayglas failure on the left and right edges
yes a screenprotector helps to hide the worn spots. This afternoon i will post some pictures of the screen that will proof that this problem is caused by a manufacturing failure.
This are pictures of my second 1 and a half week old device. If i hadn't put a screenprotector on the display, the half of the screen would be rubbed of now.
In this picture you can see where the worn spots are.

Such a symmetry isnt caused by natural wear... It is caused by a differend degree of hardness all over the glass.

All your links are broken but it doesn't matter anyway. I'm honestly failing to understand the problem here? It's just the anti-finger print coating which is laughable at best at doing what it's supposed to do anyway. The only time you notice it wearing off is if you breathe on the phone.
You got any pics? the ones 2 posts above mine say they permission denied
I've got an old sgs that I never put a case or screen protector on and carried round in my jeans pocket for over 2 years without any wearing out of the screen coating. I've got a six month old razr maxx again with a perfect screen even tho it's been in my pocket without a case or screen protector. I've got a 6 month old n7 that I use all day long every day and which is constantly in and out of a neoprene sleeve that has a screen as good as the day I bought it, which hardly shows any finger prints and which I clean about once a month if that.
Contrast that to the 2 month old n4 that has half it's coating missing (although not in a pattern that could be caused solely by wear - it looks more like it was never applied correctly). I have to wipe the screen clean every time I use it and five minutes later it's filthy again, but only on one side - the other side is pristine. The dirty side is noticeably rougher too when swiping. In daylight the finger grease is enough to obscure the screen, so that I feel the need to clean it.
It's clearly either faulty or not fit for purpose. My gut feeling is that if applied correctly to a properly prepared screen, the coating should not wear off in normal use.
I really feel for you guys but there's no way to determine if x or y phones coating will wear off. I don't know if its the specific coating that Google uses or what but this has been known to happen on the nexus s and the galaxy nexus as well. As for your jeans... Jeans are actually very abrasive as they attract dirt and soot into the fibers and it acts almost like a strop on the glass repeatedly taking it in and out of your pocket.
I don't trust the glass on any of these devices and though the screen feels really nice on this phone... One of my RMA phones shipped with a big dot of a scratch or defect in the screen right from the factory. I never use any of these devices without a screen protector. I use bse as they mostly preserve the feel of the screen sans protector but if you want a less worn screen... On any phone I would suggest that be one of the first things you get for your phone.

Mine's exactly the same even down to the not worn spot in the middle of the edge. From how I use and carry my phone there is no way this is caused by normal wear and tear. My replacement arrived this morning so I will see how it compares tonight.

I think these little bugs are caused by the low price of the phone. reducing the costs of a phone causes bad quality...

Light bleeding from edge of phone?

Noticed something for the first time today. Looks like there's light bleeding from the left side edge of my screen where it meets the frame. It's not uniform either so it makes me think that there was some sealent that detached somehow. Anyone else have this issue? I'll try and take a pic once I have another camera to use.
Looks like the same is happening to mine. Left side bottom corner. Actually seems to just be the paint under the glass is peeling away or something? Doesn't seem like it's physically open, compromising the water resistance.
Look like this?
Sent mine in like 2 weeks ago. Still waiting for them to ship it back.
They managed to replace the LCD and motherboard for some reason... wth Samsung
another thread...its not light bleed -

Dang. That's too bright for a dark room.
Huh just noticed that on mine too. Not that bad though but still noticable.

I've had 2 replacements so far. First one was on the left side from top to bottom. Second phone was all round. Looked the screen had it's own halo!
Interestingly the store manager said that this is not the norm having compared them against the the display phones in store and his own Note 8 which were all flawless!
Whether it's the light reflecting from the screen etc etc, i personally believe this should not be like this, not when there is so much inconsistency between flawless handsets and handsets with the light bleed.
Samsung needs to address this and actually take ownership.
This is one of the first things i checked when i got my Note 8. Mine doesn't have this "bleed"
