Um, recovery mode anyone? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got an HD today, was attempting to do some dev work, renamed Launcher.apk after install Nova Prime, and now I'm stuck at the Kindle Fire splash screen. I've tried every key combination that I can think of.
Does anyone know if it's even possible to get to stock recovery? And No, ADB does not work at the splash screen but I did have it working when the tablet actually booted.
Thanks in advance

I was curious. .so I tried something.
With tablet 'booted', hold power button for 30s. Eventually, the kindle fire logo will come up. Let go of power button. Press down both volume buttons, and hold, while you press the power button and release power button. Continue holding both volume buttons during the initial startup with logo.
Doing this. .I now have 'Safe mode' printed in the bottom left screen of my kindle and it's booted into the OS. Maybe this can help you fix it.

ADB will not work in fastboot. Use fastboot commands.

A similar problem
I have a Kindle Fire HD 7" and I used firefire to get twrp and now it wont boot into recovery. I shows a yellow triangle with an explanation point asking to reboot or reset. Lastly, it underwent a ota update removing the root access and I was success getting it back with B4INRY's root. This update is probably the problem but, im unsure how to fix it because I cant flash a old ROM without recovery working.

Since you're doing dev work I'll assume you have the android SDK then. So since that parts taken care of, do you have a factory cable? That will put you into fast boot mode where you can flash a clean ROM onto your kindle.

Nexus 7 Hard Reset

I have read that a hard reset is activated by:
1. Turn off.
2. Hold vol up/vol down/power on
3. Select Recovery using vol buttons and press power button
4. After several minutes, screen with red triangle will appear
5. Hold volume up and press return for menu to make hard reset
All goes well til #4. Here I get blank screen showing "Google" and it never moves into the red triangle picture and just freezes. I have waited over 20 minutes for the boot into recovery menu and nothing happens.
Have I missed a step or is something wrong? If onboard recovery process is broke is there a way to fix it? I would like to have access to hard reset should something dire go wrong.
No I am not rooted nor have I tried to root and have only loaded apps at this point.
Everything else is working fine and this appears to be an excellent device.
Thanks for any advice....
if you stuck on a screen, just hold power plus both volume buttons at the same time. hold it for a few seconds until you see your device reboot. hopefully you good after that. i got stuck on bootloader screen before and did that to get out of it. good luck!

I am stuck on the google logo right after i do recovery mode. i did what you said to get out of the google logo but i tried again to hard reset but it still is stuck on google logo. and i need to hardreset becuase i have forgot my lockscreen password and it is the only way i can get into the tablet.
oh ok. if that hard reset not working, might be better off trying to remember what the password was. you didnt write it down anywhere?
actually theres a way to reset it, or erase all of your data, go into developement section and check out wugfresh root tool kit or the one from Sambra. it will likely require you to unlock but all data n everything will be erased back to how it was out the box. thats your only hope. if you were rooted already, there mightve been a chance. but i think you have to run one of those tool kits to root and unlock. then itll automatically wipe the tablet clean of any previous data.

So the issue is that the tablet is freezing once you click "recovery" from the bootloader menu?
If thats the case - it's a pretty common known issue.
1) Boot into the bootloader
2) Plug the device into a USB port on your computer
3) Click recovery
That should allow you to access the recovery menu.

After step 1 when i plug it into my laptop if freezes and i can no choose recovery mode
Same here - anybody got any solutions/suggestions?
I had trouble getting into recovery earlier, so I installed CW Recovery via Fastboot,
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-7-clockworkmod-recovery-6-0-1-0-install-103346/
Now it works, before it was just sitting on that Google screen.
Forgot Pin lock
If you set a pin lock on your tablet make sure you remember it!!!
Apparently google or asus can't do anything so you would have to send it back for a replacement tablet.
Google customer service told me they are aware that the hard reset does not work for nexus 7 tablet.
And they might not even fix the known problem.
Plug the device into the computer before you reset it, otherwise the hardware buttons won't work in the bootloader.

I know how you can hard reset it
step 1) install android sdk
step 2) plug tablet into computer
step 3) boot into bootloader
step 4)
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot oem lock
step 5) enjoy factory reset tablet

Maybe if you unlock and root the tablet, that might work. But on a unrooted or locked tablet the hard reset does not work at all. Gets stuck at the google logo. Pluging it to the computer or without it won't work. Kinda silly isn't it?

You need to have bootloader driver installed. It comes with the SDK - after booting into bootloader, plug the tablet in, wait for Windows to try installing default drivers, then select to find driver manually and navigate to <sdk>\extras\google\usb_driver. After the driver is successfully installed, keys start working again and the tablet boots into recovery successfully.

I also have one of those tablets that doesn't boot into recovery if you choose it from bootloader no matter if you hook it up to computer, don't hook up to computer, stand on your head, put your ankles behind your head, or beg it. It just freezes at the google screen.
So the quoted part, is your solution.

AFAIK, for fastboot to work, bootloader drivers need to be installed.
Fastboot works. But can't enter recovery from the bootloader menu.

Does fastboot reboot recovery work? Lock/unlock erases the device, so if you're trying to do factory reset, perhaps that's all you need?

Ya that works, if I use the os to enter recovery, no problems. Or adb commands to enter recovery, no problems. Just can't boot to recovery from boot loader with the recovery option in the boot loader menu.

Hi willter12,
Can you fix this issue?
I had the same problem, however, my N7 was rooted before. I recognized that my N7 CWR had been removed when rooted (another guy did it).
So, I installed the Toolkit from this and un-lock boot loader, flash back CWR, everyting was very OK to restore to stock. :victory:
Goodluck.

Stuck after data factory reset.

I'm running streak droid honeycomb. I did a factory data reset through the settings menu and the device reboooted, appeared to be resetting but no I'm stuck on a screen with the android character and a triangle with a red exclamation.
I rooted and installed this so long ago that I'm lost. I mostly mess around with my phone. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Did you try to get into recovery after charging it? You could reflash that way or nvflash it again.
But WHY THE RUM?!!!
Follow the instructions here:
Streak 7 Flashing Guide
to get into Recovery Mode. Then select option 3; "Factory Reset (User data and Internal tablet storage".
That'll get you back to bone stock assuming all you really did was root it. Done this a bunch of times. It'll work.

I hope it's alright I jump in...as I have the same problem. Stock HoneyComb 3.2 not rooted. Would boot up fine, but was unable to get into recovery or fastboot so performed a factory reset through privacy setting and now stuck on the logo. I was (don't know now able to see connect using nvflash but unable to locate any clear instructions on how to flash a ROM (either a new one or stock). Hence the factory reset.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

NVFlash back to 2.2 using this link: http://d-h.st/iXc
After that using its stock recovery, using the factory Update.pkg, update to HC again. All can be found using links from this starting page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak_7

Thanks wptski.
Using nvflash I got back to 2.2 but the problem remains that I can't boot into either stock recovery or fastboot in order to install an update.pkg.
I can connect in AXP mode but haven't found any instructions of how I can use it to perform an update or install a custom recovery. It's a problem on the tablet - all the drivers are installed on pc and I've never had any problem in the past, as long as I could get the phone into recovery or fastboot. The symptoms are soft keys light up, battery light flashes 4-5 times and then it shuts down. I can boot up normally into 2.2
I should probably find another forum for my 'new'/old problem...as I'm not stuck at Dell logo anymore :silly:

Okay, to get into the stock recovery and /or Fastboot mode you are holding the up/down volume button and the power ON button at the same time, correct? It does take a 2-3 seconds for either to come up on the screen.
You can't installing anything from APX mode or get into recovery mode from it either.

Have you tried to NVFlash 2.2 again? From your other post, you were on 3.2 before so I'd retry the NVFlash again, at least. It seems that you got into stock recovery mode before so the buttons did work before although I have heard of them getting stuck with both ON.

Thanks so much for your help wptski!
I re -nvflash'd 2.2 with the same result....successful flash and can boot into OS. Still unable to get into stock recovery or fastboot. The buttons don't feel stuck - but? Can I use nvflash to get anything other than 2.2 on to it? This all started with wanting nothing more than a 'simple' root Since I"m broken, any chance I can use nvflash to to get TWRP and ICSB4 on it - nothing to lose at this point
Another thought: would moving to a linux machine open up more possibilities?

Here's a test to see if your buttons are stuck since you have the NVFlash drivers installed, with the S7 OFF just plug into your PC, if you hear the normal audio sound when you plug in something into your USB port, they are stuck. Not sure if it would boot normally with stuck buttons.

[Q] 7" Kindle Fire HD stuck on default home screen

Hi Everybody
I had a 7" kindle fire hd that was rooted but I was trying to get the latest google play installed with KF First Aide but for some reason it got messed up. Now it takes a long time to boot up and when it boots up, instead of going to the go launcher screen, it looks like it's going to the default Kindle home screen. I see the Shops, Games, Apps, Books, etc at the top with no images or anything at all.
I also see the Customer Also Bought at the bottom but no icons or images at all either. There's nothing else to click on. I tried to do the restore in KF First Aide but that didn't work.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Anybody in the OC California area want to help? I would gladly pay for your time?
Or can this be done remotely? I would also gladly pay for your time.
I just want to get this to work again!
Thanks!!!
Boot into Recovery and do a factory reset. Assuming you know how to use ADB and fastboot, grab a .bin file of the 7.2.3 OS image from Hashcode in the development forum and flash.
How do I boot in Recovery and do a factory reset? Do I need the factory cable for that? I have one on the way.

Shutdown the Kindle, then power it on holding the Volume Up button. If that doesn't work, power the Kindle on, and THEN hold the Volume Up button. Either way, you should end up in a simple Amazon Recovery screen with you options, factory reset and reboot. Go ahead and do a factory reset. There are other ways to get into Recovery but only in-app, like from ROM Toolbox and such.
But before that, try a master reset first. This is much more simple. At any time when the Kindle is powered on, after it finishes booting, hold the Power button for 30 seconds, then release, and hit it again to power the tablet on. This master reset resolves many problems like crashes and freezes.
I tried the master reset but it still boots up to a sluggish kindle home screen with no icons or home button.
I tried the shutdown then power on with vol up button but that didn't work.
So I shutdown, turn on, then hold vol up button. I didnt get an amazon reset screen. I put me in safe mode?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!!

There's no safe mode, it's probably the fastboot screen, but you normally can't get into fastboot unless you use an app or if you have a factory cable (not the USB cable that came with the device).
Try shutting down, then booting holding BOTH Volume Up AND Volume Down and see if you can trigger Recovery that way. I know I have managed to enter Recovery once like that.

[SOLVED] CM10.1, forgot to reset, bricked my phone?

Hey guys,
due to being fed up with Sense I installed the latest CM10.1 nightly build for the HTC ONE with clockworkmodtouch recovery and now my phone seems to be bricked.
I pushed the rom on the device via adb sideload which went without a problem. Then I rebooted without wiping everything, which I simply forgot (I know...). Then the CM logo animation started and didn't stop until the battery was fully drained. After charging the battery and starting the phone, it goes to the HTC logo with the red warning text, and then directly to the CM logo again. I can't get into the bootloader via power+vol up or power+vol down, and once the phone is running I can't even hardware reset it via those keys. The soft keys' illumination just starts blinking.
Maybe someone has had a similar problem and can point me in the right direction. I can't access the phone via adb btw.
TL;DR:
Installed CM10.1 with cwmt recovery via adb sideload
Forgot to wipe everything before rebooting
Phone stuck in CM start animation
Hardware keys don't seem to do anything (soft keys blink), even if I hold them for over a minute
adb devices or anything like that doesn't work
Any help would be appreciated

Like I said in my OP, I'm not able to enter recovery. If I press power+vol up for a minute or so, the phone boots AFTER I let go of the buttons. Then it goes to the HTC logo, 5 secs later to the animated CM logo, which will rotate until the battery is dead.

Alright, I got into the bootloader now! A big thanks. I feel like an idiot. The problem was that I let go of both the buttons simultaneously, like it says in almost every tutorial. Now that I kept the vol down button pressed it worked. Thanks man.
I don't understand how you can get to the loading screen but not the recovery. That sounds strange. I've been stuck in a boot loop before. I took my battery out, put it in, held the buttons, then it should work fine. I can't understand how it won't go into recovery unless you really messed up.

Idk if it's the same for all phones, but when you go to recovery or the new ROM menu, it has little blue writing on the top left that says where you are going. I.e… recovery

I don't understand how you can get to the loading screen but not the recovery. That sounds strange. I've been stuck in a boot loop before. I took my battery out, put it in, held the buttons, then it should work fine. I can't understand how it won't go into recovery unless you really messed up.

kindle fire 5th gen, stuck in boot loop unless battery drained

kindle fire 5th gen, stuck in boot loop unless battery drained.
I am able to boot fine only if the battery becomes drained from the boot loop'ing and then i turn it back on. But after it boots fine into the fire os, if i do a reboot or power off, then power on again, it will go back into a boot loop. And, i can't even turn it off right now, it is jsut in a boot loop.
It seems strange that it still boots, but only in that condition. WHat could be wrong? if i flash a custom rom, would it fix it or what?
thanks

Your best best is to reload FireOS 5.1.2 from the stock recovery menu if you can access it. Long press power until the device shuts off. Then press and hold left volume button (one closest to head phone jack) immediately followed by power button. Hold both for 5-10 sec. If no response release both then try again. After 3-5 seconds the device should boot into recovery mode. From there you can attempt to reload FireOS 5.1.2 following the instructions in this guide/video: here.
If you can't access the recovery menu then your only other option is to request an exchange from Amazon if the device is still under warranty.
Maybe try a back to Stock.

Hold power down & Volume down (When the buttons are on top the left one)
Hold the vol down button until you are in the recovery.
use the vol buttons until you find the "apply update from ADB"
The go ahead and use "ADB Sideload ./../xxx.bin" (Drag the downloaded file (.Bin) To the Terminal/cmd)

Same guidance is provided in the previous post; please check thread before posting.
Hi. It is running FireOS 5.0.0. I didn't flash it or do anything except root it, and then this is how i bought it used from ebay.

Well, that's a different story! Devices running 5.0.0-5.0.1 can boot twrp which greatly facilitates the installation of a custom rom which should eradicate the bootloop problem. You definitely do NOT want to upgrade FireOS beyond v5.0.1 as the device will permanently loose the ability to boot twrp. Such devices are sought and pretty rare.
On the road today so can't easily find/link relevant threads. Hopefully someone else will or I will update this post later.

hi. i just now installed the CM12, I was hesitant at first and wanted to take my time because i messed up a fire about a week ago, it was another fire 5th, but it had 5.0.12, and i think it was because i updated it and it was because i connected it to wifi, unike this one i didn't connect it to the internet before rooting and installing CM
i bought that fire off ebay used for 35 or less too.
so, now my fire works fine, and i can use it for extra stuff like reading.
thanks guys.
