[Q] Change lockscreen to function like a clock. - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not familiar with the android os as most of my experience has been with ios. I just got a kindle fire hd and I was curious if there is a way to make the lock screen function like a clock when I just have it sitting in base on my bedside table. I'm assuming the first step is going to be to root the device but not clue what to do past there (not sure if just turning off the ads would do this) and would rather not do anything to screw up my device. Thanks in advance.

Gentle alarm has that. You can sideload it.

Delete the offers service in /system/apps using es file explorer it is obvious as it has a offers icon rename or destroy dat ****

[Q] What's the best method for customizing the lock screen?

I tried widget locker and liked the way it looked, but you have to manually start the app every time you turn the phone on. I don't really care about all of the slide mods, but I would like to change the clock, font, etc. Is there a setting in Cyanogen that I'm missing? Any other app suggestions?
Has anyone ever tried this method for changing the clock font?
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/e1q7j/i_got_rid_of_that_stupid_lockscreen_clock_font/
Basically requires using Terminal to paste a new font over the existing font. I've never used Terminal and I don't have any experience in Linux. The program that someone mentions there (Type Fresh) has lots of bad comments on Appbrain about causing crashes and bootloops, so I think I'll stay away from that one.
are you looking to modify your system lockscreen or trying to find a replacement app (widgetlocker)?
for your widget locker problem, select start at boot and disable the 5 sec. rule.

If you don't want to use terminal, I'm pretty sure you can use ninjamorph which might be a little easier. As for widgetlocker, I'd say just do what kevina said. I've been using for the past week or so and it's been smooth and quick for me.
You could use tasker to autostart widget locker.

Ninjamorph doesn't work for this, nor did root explorer. I tried type fresh multiple times and it didn't work. After trying everything except using the terminal, I just changed the fonts in the rom's zip and reflashed it.
Thanks for the tips guys.. I reinstalled Widget Locker and I'm playing around with it again. I don't like how it takes over the Home button, but other than that it seems to be working pretty well.
Newest cm6.1 rc2 nightly has gestures and added support for phone and sms sliders on the lock screen. I can quickly access facebook, camera, sms, and phone without first unlocking the phone - I love it!
Which nightly are you on and does it seem pretty stable? I do have that same functionality you are talking about with Widget Locker... but if I can have it through the OS, I'll just use that.
I just got Widget Locker the other day. I love it!

Also make sure widgetlocker is installed on your phone and not the sd.

[Q]

Has anyone on the KF2 rooted had their statusbar flicker or would know the cause of or solution to the issue?
It just turns off then on, seemingly random. My turning on I mean it appears, the icons adjust to match, then it disappears about one second later, and when I try to swipe down on it, I can't get anything to happen.
Installed new status bars (non root ones) and it replaced the bar that flashes...but the same issue.
This happened after a boot from using KindleFree. I used most of the tools on it, if you want to know I can list them. The only thing that I can POSSIBLY imagine went wrong would be when I tried to see how it would handle the setting a laucnher. So I got nova, rebooted, didn't like nova, set apex as default by pressing home, and that was that. I can't find nova in my ROM toolbox list of apps so I'm not sure how KindleFree installed it, and I'm not sure if that even caused the issue.
Any ideas?
I planned to just reset, re-root and start from clean when I get home but I'm at work for the next 7 hours and I'd like my statusbar back haha.
Well, some update I suppose.
TabletBar Hider does something. When I open the app and press restore, it makes the statusbar flash and appear for a bit. It's the ONLY thing that seems to have a direct effect on when it seems to appear. I tried using apps that make the notification area appear, and those did not work.
My best guess is something is forcing it to close....but I'm not sure what, or why.
Suggestions?
Well.....I've fixed it.
I wanted the Chameleon launcher so I changed my build.prop so the market would think I have a Nexus 7. No, this did not work for the market (I think I need to clear the cache) but, my status bar works! No idea what happened folks but.....there you go?
This thread can be locked or removed or whatnot. Since I really have no useful insight as to what broke or fixed it.
Signs point to installing Nova with KindleFree broke it, and that changing my build prop from a blaze tablet to a nexus 7, fixed it.
It makes no sense to me either, but that's what happened! Oh well, at least it works now. Happy modding and New Years all!

Have you installed Gmail by any chance?
I don't have the kindle fire 2, I have the hd, but for me gmail is the usual culprit for that like mentioned earlier. Other apps have caused it though. Usually going through and opening all the apps you used before it happens will clear that up. I do believe it's some sort of issue with notifications.

How did I not find that thread? Thanks! It could have been. From my thread, you can see my fix didn't seem related to me, BUT, yes, I did install gmail using KindleFree so that may have spawned some issues. However, I have used gmail since, and no issues. I'm not really sure what changing the build.prop does beyond supposedly trick the market, which didn't work for me. Thank you though! Hopefully we get to the root of what exactly this is! Two issues so far, both fixed in different ways. If it happens again I will try your fix and if that works then it's for certain gmail and hopefully we can help future issue finders!
I'm rather curious of getting market to believe the kindle is another device... it would be nice to not sideload so many apps
If you have success with this please post back with your build prop edits

No, you cannot. Rooting shouldn't be THAT difficult though if you have experience on the sort of thing.
But, no, without root, you cannot get another launcher working.

That is not correct. ADW launcher ex works without rooting. The only limitation is that tapping the home key brings up the original kindle ui. But a simple tap of the adw icon in the carousel brings adw back up.
I've rooted my Kindle Fire 10.2.4 perfectly. The guides online work like a charm, here:

I used ADW Launcher EX version 1.3.3.56
I tried all of the popular launchers, none of them worked. This version of ADW worked for me.
To install it, simply obtain the .apk file and place it on your KFHD. Then use a file explorer, like ES File Explorer to locate the file and execute it. That will install it. Then from the Amazon UI, go to "Apps" and tap the ADW icon.
It should work fine. As I mentioned earlier, the only limitation is that tapping the "home" softkey brings up the default Amazon UI. But the ADW icon appears in the carousel so tapping on that icon brings the launcher back.
It's a very nice and safe way to use an alternative launcher.

Hm! Thanks for the correction. I had no idea that was true. Someone should find out why that happens and get something set up so people can easily do that for their kindle in case they aren't sure about rooting their device. Even when we get new OSs and such, I think people may want to keep the kindle OS and still like a familiar look of an android OS. Or maybe we can request ADW find out so it still works with future updates and whatnot? NO other launcher works this way that you've tried? Only ADW?

For books, that's up to you. I never looked into, nor used, ebooks of any sort, kind, or make.I used moon reader because I could just browse to where I had my kindle books (co-worker kindly gave me a bunch, so I had a nice little collection) and it works from there. I'd say it's an alright reader, but you will most likely have to get a reader you like that can open any kind of file. I'm just not to knowledgeable for that, but moonreader does work. For any Kindle books you can get the kindle app from the PlayStore and use your books from there.
For the second part, here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2051270
To sum it up, I'll paste what the guide says:
To change the lockscreen we need a few apk from the android market.
A. No Lock
B. Rom toolbox
C. Your favorite lookscreen ( I use Picture Password a copy of Windos 8 lockscreen)
Simply install Rom Toolbox, No lock, and lockscreen form market.
Open Rom toolbox and select App Manager find No Lock from the list and long press it. A menu will pop up, select "Convert to system app". Reboot device ( To skip this step you can also download No Lock apk from internet and place it on system/app)
Open No lock and hit enable, now you have no stock lockscreen, feel free to install your favorite lockscreen
*Note from myself:
In following the guide, go locker was being a butt to me. I then remembered ages ago that I bought widgetlocker, and that it would have exactly what I wanted. Now, right now, WidgetLocker IS a system app on my kindle. It works. I am not sure if this is needed, as it is not listed in the guide, but if you try the lockscreen and it doesn't work, you may need to make it a system app, I just wish I could remember WHY I did it.
Good luck!

ahh ok what you need to do is instead of ..\..\root do
Code:
cd C:\root
assuming you saved it to a file directly on your c drive and called it root
do the same when it asks you to do ..\..\qemuroot exept put cd C:\qemuroot....these are basic commands... You may consider reading up on windows and xda commands to help you along the way if you run into issues

Can't set wallpaper after latest ota update

Picked my kindle up to find it updated and unrooted the other day, and i have since rerooted it and fixed everything like it used to be but have a very annoying problem. I hadn't set go launcher hd back as a alternate ui since the last update and when i did this time i have no wallpaper. Here's where it gets interesting, i tried nova, go launcher ex, adw and apex, they also couldn't set it. My lockscreen defaults to random stock image like it should still, but my background wont set,its just a black screen behind the icons. Anyone have any ideas or is this just a bug with the latest update that i haven't read about?
EDIT:
THE SOLUTION TO THIS IS A FIX I MADE ITS POSTED ON PAGE 8
This should help people that don't want to read through this to find a solution.

That tells me nothing. What happens when you try to set it? Are there any windows that pop up? What apps are you trying to set it with? What Amazon OS are you running? Are you running the latest version of the launcher?
Ok I'm on os 7.4.1, on go launcher hd i tap the preset wallpapers and nothing happens, on go launcher ex and others i could goto the selection menu and tell it to set whatever wallpaper i choose but it just remains a blank black background with the ui on it. It's the latest version of the launcher as far as google play store says, also tried setting up live wallpaper, thought it could of been the problem so i removed it and rebooted, still doesn't work.

Hm. So far not a lot is known about this new software yet, because it's barely pushed out, so you'll have to wait for a bit for a changelog to show up, then we can go further. For right now, know that Amazon OS doesn't play nice with Android, so if you want to go for the easier route and be done with it, go to my thread in my signature.

I guess so. I'm glad my thread has been of help.
It's always got to be something!
am also having this same problem. I have a rooted KFTT running the stock ROM and GO Launcher ex. Usually GO is pretty good about wallpapers, live or static, but since the 7.4.1 update I have seen nothing but black screen. When in theme settings everything seems to be fine..... no errors. Everything but the wallpapers change. I have attached a screenshot of my is screen and my current homescreen which I have the black magic theme applied. I hope someone else is able to figure to this out, I have done everything I could think of. Thank you ahead of ttime for your time and effort.
Ok i think i will eventually flash cm 10.1, but seeing as we don't know for sure all of what was done in this new update i think I'll wait until its reported as safe to do. Don't feel like bricking my kindle, specially because i don't have the means to order a factory cable right now if things go really bad.

I'd suggest backing up the launcher to the sdcard, then uninstall it, reinstall it, restore backups. I've done this procedure with Nova, but I don't know about others.
Think i already tried doing that, I'm thinking its amazon's fault since it does this in every launcher I've tried. Wonder if they did it on purpose... i'm just throwing a guess around based on what i know from locking the wallpaper on my moms kindle 1, but is it possible theres a wallpaper file in a different location like what the kindle 1 had with write permissions denied? I have no idea how the background system on kindle hd works since it doesn't seem to usually affect ur wallpaper when th lockscreen comes on, so the actual background seems like it would be stored elsewhere.
I'm going to peruse the filesystem, I'm used to linux on my pc but android i have no idea what i'm looking for.
Edit: don't know if its relevant, but i found a file /data/system/wallpaper_info.xml and the name entry is blank.

same problem
Just like everyone above I am having the same problem. After the update 7.4.1 my kindle will no longer support the viewing of wallpapers. I am looking into this issue but so far I have found nothing. It might be an apk missing like for the widgets. (Widgetpicker.apk) Or it could be something much more difficult, not sure yet. Why does amazon have to make customization so hard. Has anyone else found anything???
Well i am going to take a guess because i don't know how to debug an android app while it running, but i would guess that amazon took out some classes that the alternate launchers use to set the wallpaper from the os. Wouldn't exactly surprise me if they did. Reason i say this is because i notice on my moms kindle fire 1 that the system app folder has unessesary apps like the widget picker on it by default, and from amazons standpoint thats pointless to have with their ui not supporting them. Th hd didn't have them by default, make me wonder if they are tryin to get further away from stock android os. I wouldn't b surprise if there's a way to fix this but i have no idea if my theory is correct or not nor how the android os works as to where classe are stored. Never learned coding, computer always crashed within a month of me installing a visual studio or sdk, kind took it as a bad omen an wen further into networking and pc repair... anyway only reason i am guessing at a missing class is because i notice on my moms kindle that the wallpaper info file i found filled out starts with res:android/wallpaper_***randomnumber***, an when live wallpaper isn't use it refers to an internal android app that was probably either deleted or amazon has named it something else and i have no idea which apk it is and am to tired to look. If my speculation is completely off plz feel free to mention it, i specialize in linux and windows and a bit of mac, android i can only guess at since its kinda like a mix of linux and java. Sorry for any typos i didn't fix this default keyboard is total junk, especially in landscape mode.

Last night I flashed back to 7.3.1 since no one so far has been able to figure the black wallaper out. If you want to compare a file from the new update to the old one im using now, don't be afraid to ask ill check. I am rooted
Just curious how did you flash back? Did you use 2nd bootloader and twrp or did u restore with fastboot, i'm considering doing this myself but id like to avoid wiping all of my data. On the bright side i can export my manga if i do have to wipe, i have over 200 mangas on Quickmanga. Thank god for the export function. Though i will still have to reinstall alot of crap again. I hav never downgraded a kindle before so i was confused weather u could just flash the system img in fastboot or not, didn't feel like testing that out without researching it first. Never be icked a device so far and i don't intend to, closest call i ever had to brickin somethin was using a bad bootlogo flasher on my ipod touch 2g, couldn't even turn it on after that, mad it all the more difficult to get it into dfu mode. Enough of my rambling... i tend to do this when i stay up till 6 in the morning... Don't ask...

Glad to know I'm not going crazy. Same here - Rooted 7.4.1 and it doesn't matter which launcher I use the wallpapers won't work.
Jordanz1998, How do you get back to 7.3.1?

I do not have a second boot loader on my kindle kindle fire hd I went back to the older version by doing a full backup restore In KF First Aide. You can download this in an xda thread just look it up. Before the update I did a full rom backup (option 13 for anyone that knows). So after I saw the black screen I just plugged it up to the computer clicked option 25 restore entire kindle. This brought me back to the version that I had backed up 7.3.1 so unless you have KF First Aide and have done a full backup before the new update this will not work for you. Sorry if this doesn't help.

Could you post a screenshot of your software version? You are the only person who says they have 7.4.1.
The official Amazon website says the latest is 7.3.1: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=201016350

Also I noticed the launcher icon is no longer in the carousel. Bummer!

[Q] Rooted Kindle Keeps Resetting Itself?

Hey forum.
Before I begin, I'd just like to say this forum is incredible Been a massive help so far! So big thanks.
Anyway, I recently rooted my Kindle Fire HD 7". Incredible, and one of the bets decisions Ive made in regards to my tech.
However, after a few days, it seems to "de-root" itself. My Go Launcher HD disappears (reset to Home), the special offers come back (the ads on the lock screen - i change that as soon as im rooted), and the Superuser disappears. I still have Google Play Store etc, and can reinstall Superuser. The problem is, it still seems not to be rooted any longer.
I use ES3 file explorer, with the root manager, and after this rubbish happens, when I try to access the root manager i get "Test failed. Your phone is not compatible" or something like that.
So I simply reroot, and it's all back to normal (albeit with some annoyances such as having to reinstall Go Launcher).
I've not blocked OTA updates, so is it that?
Thanks for any help!
Ben.
I believe Amazon has updated the OS a few times over the last week or so. This will "de-root" the device each time.

wallpaper issue update 8.4.3
Since the first update to 8.4.1, i have been problems with wallpapers of my kindle fire HD 8.9''. I re-rooted the kindle many times, and actually i tried different launchers as nova or go launcher, however the wallpaper is impossible to change. ¿Some ideas to fix it?

On page 8 I posted a fix for the wallpaper, but I have hit and miss problems with bricking, suggest having a factory cable or twrp handy in case something happens. Feel free to try it.

There are some way to do this easier??? or what files we need to modify...
I see that you use CM10.1 why did you change it? I would like to change but there are a few issues with this so If i have a stable system (however the wallpaper doesnt work) why i should change?
I changed because I wanted to try cm10.1 then said to myself this is so much better, also I'm staying with cm10.1 because I don't like where amazon is going with the os, they just released another update that makes my fix not work because it now has an encrypted framework-res.apk, and I don't know if I can unobfuscate it, still waiting on someone to send me the new framework-res so I can analyze it. And i heard a rumor that they are going to patch the root exploit soon so i prefer stay in on something else that I don't have to constantly maintain and have compatibility problems with. Oh and despite then fact that cm is slightly unstable, i would call it stable enough to use overall. I having had the buggy mic issue yet nor have I had the 3d render issue when I played a 3d game, only problem I had was Google music related and I am not sure if other people have had it. I think HDMI may be slightly buggy but I don't know I have no minihdmi to HDMI cables. But having a full android is is worth it in my opinion, though if you use amazon prime I guess that would be reason enough to not change changes over because there's no such thing outside of kindle os from what I understand. Ironically most of my reading I do on a kindle isn't books but manga... So I have not really touched the bookstore.

Either flash CM10 or Hashcode's ROM that stops OTA updates.
