I picked up the LU2, and I must say, I was deeply disappointed. It reduces the sound quality dramatically. Any high pitch noise just comes out as a screech. It doesn't always stay connected. It was just bad.
If anyone was unfortunate enough to buy this, some helpful tips:
If you have a three button headset, grab some electric tape, and keep the middle button pressed down. This will enable the headphones to work, but not the mic. It seems to work fine with one button headphones, including mic. If the music plays out of the loud speaker despite the headphones being plugged in, it usually suffices to just twist the headphones into the adapter. If it still doesn't work, unplug the headphones and replug them.
Despite all that, the thing worked. If you look at the 3.5" plug, it is made of four rings. One ring is the left speaker, one ring is the right speaker, one ring is the mic, and one ring is controls. The Xperia PLAY headphone jack expects the mic and control rings to be the reverse spot, hence the need for the stupid adapter. I've been looking for alternatives, and just picked one up on ebay. I'll see if that fairs any better.

i recently purchased iPhone headphones for the X1 seeing in it has a mic already on the right headphone, however when i plug it in the phone, the sound its distorted, i verified the 3 coils at the end of the jack are the same spacing as the X1s. i also put my original headphones in and they work fine, what is wrong with the headphones?
The answer is pretty simple. They were made by Apple..........
the problem is that there is no std of 3 ring (mic included) minijack connectors are made
as in the size of the 3 ring and location so it's always hit and miss if headsets with mic not officially for a device will work
Today my phone slipped out of my pocket. It slid out while I was attempting to change songs. I didn’t even look down. Just waited to hear the sound of it hitting the ground. Thankfully I never heard that sound. I looked down and the phone was dangling inches from the cement; saved by my headphone wire.
Question 1) Is this by design? The female/male connection of the 3.5mm jack seems unusually snug*. The USB by comparison sometimes falls out.
Question 2) Are there any apps that utilize the volume rocker to change the songs on the music player?

I order to give good audio quality, the jacks need to be snug, better connection. I've seen many instances where I'd need to replace headphone jacks in computers because they wouldn't snap in firmly and not make good connections. If you held it at the right angle, music would play, but not without crackling and popping occasionally.
I have no clue if there are any apps. I imagine that would be more a limitation on the plug portion than the programs. The Aria did it, but I know there are particular types of headphones that have them built in that speicifically will/will not work with the phone. Just have to try.

I just recently purchased some new earphones (Sennheiser IE7) and when I plug these into my HD7, they randomly activate the speech recognition options (even though I have disabled this in the settings), adjust the volume and pause Zune playback.
Cheaper earphones don't do this when plugged into the phone and nor does a Bluetooth headset, it only seems to happen with these particular earphones.
Has anyone experienced this with other head/earphones or knows of a way to stop this kind of thing happening?

I have experienced this also. When I use a male to male 3.5mm cable to my receiver the phone acts as if the -vol button is held down. This does not happen when I use a really cheap sony behind the head style earphone or the buds that came with it.
My guess is that its caused by the spacing on the connector (you know, between the little rings).
Try a bunch of earphones. If you're desperate, you could try splicing the connector of an earphone that works with the earphones you want to use. Otherwise I would say its not worth it; the audio components in the HD7 don't seem to have great quality anyway. I had a razr2 and the sound quality was better than the soundblaster in my computer.
hi: So my friend gave me a pair of dr dre beats(tour) earbuds. I plugged them in and everything sounds fine on the phone, but I realized today that when I wiggle the wire near where it goes inside the jack, my music stops. As if my phone thinks the headphone has disconnected. So for example, with double twist, if the wire moves, the song pauses, and I have to press the play button again. I tried a friends Seinheiser headphones, and when I wiggled them, there were no problems. What should I do?
If the head phone connector is gold and appears to be wearing off it just means that thee signal is not making it to the headphones. Gold plated connectors is a way to make a cheap cord better but once the gold wears off the signal strength weakens. I have some really nice dj quality headphones that sound amazing but it can be hit or miss bc the gold is going

if everything is fine there, wiggle just the wire part.
ive had many headphone extention cables break internally and they cut out.
if no other headphones do it, id assume its the headphones,
btw why did your freind give them to you? theyre expensive,,,
it's probably not the jack afterall... i put ipod buds in my captivate and the sound played fine...probably the dre earphones since when i plugged them into a mac nearby and i went to listen to a youtube vid after twisting the wire tip around the sound was lost. thnks anyways
i have the same problem when i plug into the an audio jack from my car stereo.
when i plug it in the right side normally goes out. takes some wiggling of the wire to get sound to both sides.
my friend has the same problem so i think that maybe the jack on the phone is cheap. who knows. maybe ill try another cord.
I have 2 z3c's. The first one (black) has a broken magnetic charging port. Everything else is perfect.
Because I hate the USB charging flaps, I bought a 2nd z3c second-hand. It worked fine for a few weeks, now when I plug in headphones it only plays from one side (whether it's music or in-call). The stereo speakers work fine when no headphones are in.
Have tried multiple headphones, all the same issue. Assume it's an audio jack problem - any ideas?
Looks like audio jack problem by your description.
The contacts are visible inside with direct light pointed into the jack, you can check what's wrong visually. Might be just a bent contact, and precise work with sewing needle might cure it. Might be something broken, and then no good suggestions besides using BT headphones. Or, if you have good headphones and just want a BT adapter, maybe something like this.
