[Q] Home button app for Note 1? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been searching for a while and can't find anything in the forums, or any apps. Thought I would post it here to see if any of the wizards knew of something that might work.
I carry my Note 1 (GT-N7000 international version) without any case in my trouser pocket (screen towards my leg) with nothing else in the pocket. It's the way I like it and works fine for me. But, occasionally the home button will be accidentally pressed. Although it eventually turns itself off, I was looking for an app that would modify the home button so that it only works on a long press (I never use the task manager anyway).
My phone is not rooted and is still running the original 2.3.6 (never got any software update notification).
Has anybody heard of any app (or setting?) that would allow me to do this?
Thanks

I guess you can do it without getting rooted
But you can use apps that work with proximity sensor..Try this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1dGlzLnZpbGl1cy5hbmRyb2lkLnNjcmVlbmxvY2tlciJd

raj
It never occurred to me to look for proximity sensor apps -- I just kept searching for home button apps.
It works. If the home button is pushed, it almost immediately shuts itself off.
I knew there was a wizard out there.
Thanks.

Just curious that you never got any software update notification. May b "Auto update" & "Push message" under "Settings>About Phone>Software update" are disabled? Try connecting ur phone to ur PC/Laptop through Kies..AFAIK, you should be able to update to ICS..sorry for concentrating on your 2nd issue rather than the main one..

Thanks for responding! Both Auto Update and Push Message are checked. About once I week I manually check for an update, but it says that no update is available.
I can connect via Kies, but I see nothing in Kies about updating the OS.
By the way, this is actually a UK phone that I've been using in the U.S. I don't know if that would make any difference. Everything works fine.
Any help would be appreciated. I would like to upgrade to ICS.
Best regards

Even though u live in the US,you should get all the updates of the UK
Its not required to be in the same country where you bought the phone to get the software update
If you dont get it through ota,you can dowmload the ics rom and flash it through pc odin
You can find all stock roms here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Download either US or UK rom and flash it through pc odin
There are also instructions and screenshots of flashing a rom in the above link
And if you flash ics,do not do any wipes with stock kernel, stock ics kernels are not safe to wipe and may lead to a brick.First root your phone and flash a safe kernel

Thanks to shyamub4u and rajsekhar.300!
Your comments made me start researching Kies, and I found out I was using only Kies Air. I downloaded Kies, connected my Note via cable, and the ICS update appeared. It installed fine. So I got two issues resolved in one post.
Bravo.

[Q] n00b question- rooting & OTA updates, 'unable to scan networks'

HI there, I have the dreaded 'unable to scan networks' wifi problem- it started after I set up a mobile AP (I didn't turn the AP service off after I'd finished with it- I wonder if that's what caused it?)...
Anyway, I've since learned via this board that I can fix my wifi by 2 methods: 1) performing a reset (would rather not) and 2) editing a line somewhere, root access is required.
I do have a third option- waiting until the 2.2 OTA update comes through, which I understand will require (and perform) a reset anyway.
However, I'm sick of waiting for 2.2.
What I'd like to know is: If I root my phone & fix my Wifi, will I still receive the OTA update?
Anybody?
TIA.
the 2.2 froyo is not OTA
it is OTK (over the kies)
just turn off your phone, then turn it back on, that should reset your WiFi stuck i/o
some times the GPS does that too, just turn off the phone, turn it back on and they work right away.
in contrast to the HTC Windows Mobile phones, the SGS is much much much better, i barely have to do any restart of the phone with Android
with Windows Mobile it was at least 10 reboot a day
Restart doesn't fix it... Tried removing battery, etc. etc.
The 'unable to scan networks' problem is a known issue- at least to this board, If not to samsung.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Im in the same boat as you mate with my Samsung galaxy s, i have tried turning it on and off with alternate battery in and out methods, my wi-fi just wont work now, it turns on, comes up saying "Unable to scan networks" and turns the wifi off.
I have read on many posts about the issue and the best fix appears to be here:
hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8062313
*Sorry its not linked, this is my first post so i assume it wont let me post links until im roughly around the 25th post mark.
The issue i find with using this method is that in order to browse the phone at a root level to get to that file, you need to pay for the App in the android market to do it.
I have rooted my phone already and already applied the lag fix (boy did that change things), but im more contemplating doing the upgrade to 2.2 than buying the app just to fix a wifi issue. Im hoping this gets fixed in 2.2, or at least a more easier solution / fix.
My question is, if i did buy the app to browse the phones file system and i fix the wifi, does it fix it permanently or just until it happens again and i will have to follow the same process again... ?
did you both turn off Bluetooth when using WiFi?
you can't use BT when using WiFi
I've never had to turn off bluetooth to use wifi before...
However: PROBLEM IS NOW FIXED!!
Here's how I did it:
First, bluetooth was off.
Tried to upload a video shot on the phone to youtube. Got message along the lines of 'will only upload video over wifi'
Next message pops up: 'waiting for wifi'
THEN message box saying' signal strength excellent' & asking for my wifi password!
I've been without wifi for 2 weeks, this is brilliant. Give it a go, try uploading a video to youtube.
I reckon it overwrites the bad line, but who knows. Maybe its a bluetooth thing. I don't care, it worked for me.
Spread the news!

[Q] Technical brick?

Hey guys, sorry to bother you, but i seriously need some help here. i have a droid incredible (love this phone to death!), but i use it as a primary phone, which means flashing roms and playing with my phone interrupts my "text my special friend" time, so i decided to buy a used g1 from ebay! great idea hu? ...not really!
</bg info>
well, i received my g1 today, and i was so excited. i checked and made sure everything was fine, so i turned it on, when i saw that there was no sim :/. luckily, i had an extra sim that my dad used when he had an old nextel phone, so i decided why not try and popping it in... but that didnt work because the phone was not unlocked >:/, so i pressed the dismiss button, then the real problem came in... the phone was completely wiped! so that meant i had to "touch the android to begin", well i did and i thought i was fine until the gmail screen came up and i have no way to sign on to gmail! i cannot access my home screen on the phone! i tried calling tmobile and htc for an unlock code to see if that helped, but no, nothing. i dont know what to do, if there is anything you guys can help me with, please reply! i really want to use this phone! thanks for reading this, and sorry for wasting your time! ...oh, and please, no flaming!
Connect to wifi

It doesn't give me an option to connect to wifi. Ive tried hitting menu, then wireless settings, but it does not say anything about wifi :/
is there any way i can get my phone rooted without having to access the homescreen? any update.zips that help me bypass the "touch the android" screen?
bump?

Your going to want to downgrade the phone back to 1.0 if it isn't already, and then follow this guide to connect to the Google servers via WiFi.
edit: I'm a new user, and not allowed to post links. So go to Google and type "G1 login to Google via wifi", it will be the first link you'll see. Make sure to first downgrade to 1.0, or else it won't work.

How do I downgrade to 1.0?! Lol, I'm not really sure how to find out if I am on 1.0 or not :/
It's basically downgrading back to RC29 (US G1) or RC7 (UK G1). Just search and download the DREAMIMG.nbh file and put it on the root of your SD card. Then go to bootloader mode (camera+power), and flash it. Restart phone and you'll be on Android 1.0.
Here is the link if you have a US G1: http://www.multiupload.com/9593XFAEYL

[Q] Voice Talk

Samsung Galaxy Note is my first ever Android phone so please excuse me for what might be something easy to fix and obvious.
Basically, just done a hard reset via holding volume, home and power buttons as I wanted to return the phone to stock because I traded it for my iPhone. I was showing friends the voice recognition software last night and all was fine. However I just went to write a Facebook status and thought I'd try the voice recognition but there's a red line through the microphone.
I've been through the settings and couldn't see anything, so thought I'd try the Voice Talk app again. It loaded up and I gave it a command then it crashed and kicked me back to the home screen where it took a couple of seconds for my apps to show up.
I tried double clicking the home button to which I was greeted with 'say your command'. Gave it a command and it was fine. However once I cancelled it and went to the main menu of Voice Talk, it locked up and threw me out again.
Any ideas?? I know not many people use it and I probably won't, but I would like it to work just for them random occasions when you want to mess about.
Please be as beginner friendly as possible
Oh, and I'm running stock... far to early to start rooting when I'm still getting used to everything after 4 years with Apple.
Ok.. I took the plunge and did a factory reset through the 'Privacy' app and now it works again
Didn't have much to lose as I'm still waiting for my SD card so I thought I might as well.
However, once I connected to the market I had a notification saying I had a firmware update available. I was already on 2.3.6 and after applying this update I'm still on 2.3.6!?
Could someone please reassure me this phone is definitely running stock rom and latest update?
your FW is stock n you have latest ROM installed.
Just keep in mind when you update not necessary gingerbread version also update(2.3.6).
look to build number XXLB1, so your ROM version is known as LB1 (latest)
Thanks for that, some less worrying now. I'll see how it goes this time - hopefully just a one off glitch.
I was just a bit worried about the 'Kernal' as it looked like it had an email address in the middle of some gibberish code. lol
This is absolutely normal
Your ROM is XXLB1
Your Kernel is XXLB1
Baseband (Modem ) is also XXLB1
it is perfact n latest
Voice command doesnt work only when accessed from double press home key
Hi, i have a bit of a problem with note voice talk. i hope its ok to ask here since this is about voice talk.
I am on Stock ICS, rooted. I am a bit confused. voice talk works fine if i open the application, say "hi galaxy", activate it and give my command.
however.... if i access voicetalk by double pressing home key. It wont accept any command as if the mic is mute i have to press cancel, say "hi galaxy" and it will work normally. anyone have any idea what happen to my voice talk and how to fix it?
thanx before

i am also prompted to update my firmware.is this absolutely necessary? will i still get ics ota even while my phone is sitting on kernel xxkk9 baseband xxkk5? reason i am reluctant to update is : i have a lot of app (games) that require over 1GIG of data files. im worried if i update i will lose all that info...
can i update without losing all of this?
or one more question, i recently bought fifa12 ..i notice that today the app has an update in google play. will updating this mean i have to re download data files again?
silly Qs i know , but please enlighten
Official updated and non wipe version of stock rom won't erase data.
Play update also won't.

Force Enable Internet Connection Sharing

Hey, everyone.
I just bought an ATT Samsung Focus S i937 off of eBay. It was locked when I received it, so I plunked down 25 bucks and unlocked it. I'm using it on Telus and so far all is well, except for WiFi connection sharing/tethering.
When I try to enable internet sharing, I get a message saying "Connection not shared. To enable tethering on this device go to (ATT's website) or dial 611."
Basically, it sounds like I need to have an ATT tethering plan to enable this on my phone, but since I'm not an ATT customer, there's not mch I can do.
I was wondering if there is a workaround for this. Please let me know!
Thanks,
Taylor

firstly DO NOT INSTALL THE SAMSUNG UPDATE!! and if updating the OSan have it unlocked already read This Website and use the relock prevent + edit your hosts file
Absolutely back up your device at every stage using This Guide
So follow these steps
unlock the device Here follow the instructions which includes installing the diagnostic tool and install XAP deployer or XAP handler Here or Here With the XAP file deployer in the WP7 SDK
Then install WP7 Root Tools Here
Then install WP Bazaar market Here
Open Root Tools, and give Bazaar higher level privileges
Find WinTT on the Bazaar market and install it
Open Root Tools, and give WinTT higher level privileges
you may need to restart to get WinTT working
go through WinTT and turn on ICS
Done
Wow thanks.
That's very complete. One questions though... I didn't mention this, but I am a registered WP7 dev and can unlock this device using my dev access. Can I load any of the XAPs directly instead of having to crack my phone?
Thanks,
Taylor
Yeah, you have limited access to installing xaps, but you will still need to interop unlock and use root tools to give higher level access to WinTT, so your best starting from scratch,

Unable to understand the process
I have purchased an Samsung Focus S i937 locked to AT&T. I have purchased an unlock code and have successfully unlocked my phone. Im also unable to use the Internet Sharing feature of my phone. Firstly, I am not a technical guy hence im unable to understand the process stated by you. Secondly, I wanted to find out that does following the process given by you, expose my device to get BRICKED as I am able to understand that involved a JAIL BREAK of the device. Does it have any other side effects.? Like effecting the radio signals or any other such problem.
Thanks

ok, first things first.
You won't brick your device, at worst a hardrest all remove all changes you can do, our device, the focus S, isn't fully unlocked, so there are limitations to the amount of damage you can do by arseing it up. With that behind us you have to learn what you are about to do, there isn't a simple way.
So, start by knowing these basics, then read through the guide, any bits you don't understand feel free to ask.
1, AT&T locked your internet connection sharing, so you must re enable that
2, To enable ICS, you must make changes to the registry
3, Microsoft locked you out of making changes to the registry, so you must gain access to do it
4, AT&T left a security hole allowing us to make changes to allow us to change things like registry
5, using that hole we can install software that will give us more access, that software can then allow us to remove the AT&T lock on ics
These things you must do, there is no magic answer, there has been some short cuts made but this in some cases has had a negative effect, such as losing 3g, doing as I said will not have any effect on your signal or anything else

issues after the above procedures were applied (a big thanks to all the brainiacs who know how to hack this stuff):
Slowed Internet Connection
Lower Strength of GPS Signal
Less accuracy and trouble sometime finding location
Less accuracy while using maps because of the above statement
Not complaining, just curious. Thanks to all.:good:

theres nothing in the code that should have done that, the XML import only fiddles with interop unlock
im not 100% sure what WTT changes but I know the entries it should be fiddling with and shouldnt make any difference, although its been suggested the ICS code does mess with the 3G signal ive not heard anything at all to suggest that it effects GPS as well.
See This Thread for details, ive copied the relevant bits here but all thanks should go to those on the original thread
Option 1
---- 11.3. If your device is not locked to a specific operator, you can use the Samsung Network Profile app (for 1st generation) or Wireless Manager (for 2nd generation)
-------- 11.3.1. Uninstall the Samsung Network Profile / Wireless Manager app.
-------- 11.3.2. Download and install the latest version of the Samsung Network Profile / Wireless Manager app from the Marketplace.
-------- 11.3.3. Open the Samsung Network Profile / Wireless Manager app.
-------- 11.3.4. Select a different Network Operator.
-------- 11.3.5. Now Select your own Network Operator again.
-------- 11.3.6. Exit the Network Profile / Wireless Manager app.
Option 2
Resolve Samsung connection problems
A lot of Samsung owners have complained here about connection problems. They blamed Interop Unlock, but apparently this has more to do with enabling "Internet Connection Sharing" than with "Interop Unlock". You should be able to recover the connection, apply this:
1. Start Diagnosis App> *#32489# ***DOES NOT WORK ON i937***
2. Tap "Back" 2 times to go back to Phone Control
3. Choose: [7] Network Control
4. Choose: [1] GFC
5. Choose: [3] Setting Cancellation
Wait for it to say success, then reboot.
GPS is a completely passive function, I don't have a problem with this, HSDPA may have issues for reasons unknown but using this method doesn't effect mine, perhaps its carrier specific..

If you have updated the OS and NOT the samsung firmware then reapply the windows break interop unlock, be sure to keep it off the inernet by disabling all coms and then apply the relock prevent xap. if you have applied the Samsung firmware and didn't have it already unlocked or you didn't have a back up, your screwed

First of all I just want to say thanks that you're trying to help me, but I just didn't understand many things u said, I'm not really into technical stuff, but I'll tell you what info I have, in hope of u helping me better.
I don't live in the US and I bought the phone from ebay and it was unlocked and it works perfectly over 2 carriers here in my country, and I have never encountered any problems with it except for the internet sharing feature.
And about 3 months ago the phone notified my to a system upgrade from version 7.10.7740 to version 7.10.8107 then immediatly to version 7.10.8773.98. now I'm guessing these are OS firmwares not samsung software.
but I've noticed something, when I setup my phone for the first time I used a US hotmail account but before I connect to the internet the ICS feature worked, but once I signed in it gave me the dial 611 or go to att.com/mywireless message.
So I am guessing if I restore the device and sign in with a non US hotmail account may result in the feature to be unlocked. The only thing keeping me from trying this because I'll have to redownload all my apps again and reorganize my contacts again. if there's a way to avoid that or someone has tried it please do tell.
Again thanks for your reply.

im afraid to say your firmware is locked,
2103.11.10.1 is unlock-able, im pretty sure anything from xxxx.12.xx.x upwards is locked down solid
I don't suppose you made a backup? if you haven't then there is nothing you can do

I'm really sorry for the late reply, was busy at work. but during that time I might have found a "Glitch" or a workaround to enable it and I have tested it many times and it works.
Well there are two ways:
1st one which is a sure thing:
1) Turn off the phone, then turn on again.
2) Once the phone is turned on, immediately go to settings>internet sharing and turn it on and BOOM there you go
* I have tried this method over a dozen times and it works every single time
** The point here is that you have to enable it immediately after the phone is turned on, I think it happens because the phone doesn't have enough time to send the info. to the servers to know that it's not enabled by default.
2nd one which was succesful over 75% of the time:
1) Go to Settings>cellular>Turn Off, Wait like 5-10 seconds and turn on again.
2) Go to Internet sharing> Turn on, and enjoy :fingers-crossed:
***I don't know why do they work or how, may be it's a Glitch like I said before but the point is they do work
I hope that I've helped someone out there and Thanks to everyone who tried to help me

nice find, ICS is disabled locally only, it doesn't have anything to send, the only thing I can think of that makes sense is that the service hasn't been initialised and doesn't call the reg entries that disables ICS, by turning it on manually ASAP it perhaps catches it out. if you enable it, then disable it, can you still enable it again in that session or do you need to restart?

Well I tried that, but there is no definite answer to it, sometimes I turn it on and off on and off many times without needing to restart and throughout the whole day, and sometimes it works once and doesn't at the second try. So it all comes down to luck, but still better than nothing
Now the thing is I'm afraid that when the 7.8 update comes, they would fix this glitch =D Haha.

Help with companion apps

So I got a new toy. A Samsung Gear Live. I've had it for a week and so far really like it. The biggest issue I seem to be having is the companion apps. I don't know why, but they refuse to work. Everytime I try to use one I get an error message to the tune of, " not connected to a device with this application" or "lost connection to phone". This is clearly untrue. I can see that I'm still connected and even the device itself acknowledges it. I just can't figure it out.
I have attempted a power cycle, using the restart function, a hard reboot, even reseting it back to factory. I rebooted my phone, Uninstalled and reinstalled the apps on the phone, and still no luck. I'm at a loss. Anyone who knows what to do on this front would be very welcome.
What are companion apps?
Sent from my SM-N910T3 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Companion apps, are the apps that are activated on your smart watch. Like the dominoes easy order app, or a bank app that let's you check your balances without pulling out your phone.
I did find my problem however. It seems that my gear live was shipped with a dev kit. I had to completely reflash it to stock software to get it to run correctly.
How did you figure out it was a dev kit? Im having similar problems. Thanks.
Fixed the problem resetting the watch and reinstalling the Android wear app. However now in the storange manager its showing three of several apps. How to fix please?
You can find if it has a Dev kit under the settings. Under build I believe. It should be a set of numbers with "dev" somewhere in it. If that's there, it's gonna hold up your regular use of the watch. It caused the apps not to work right or not to show up, etc. I'll see if I can find the link I used before for how I reset the watch to stock firmware.
