[POLL] What compensation do you expect from Google for mishandling your N4 orders? - Nexus 4 General

Lets vote. What REALISTIC compensation do you expect from Google Play Store for their mis-handling of their Nexus 4 launch. Lets take a poll!
- Free Shipping
- Free $25 gift card from Google Play
- Free 50GB of Google Drive Storage
- Free Bumper Case
- White Nexus 4
Problems with launch:
1. No clear time to order. Many people missed their orders
2. 3 week delays for orders that were placed minutes into the store opening.
3. Crashing website, repeat orders.
4. Limbo-ness

They already waived the shipping fees for the people on 3 week delay.

Depends what you define as mishandled. Suddenly backordered for 3 weeks? Or just a clumsy launch?

You're going to need a more effectively articulated argument for that to ever be taken seriously.

They refunded shipping thats all they really owe anyone if it doesn't arrive on time. We are not entitled to more.

I think this is beyond technical difficulties. They didnt even determine a launch hour leaving many of us waiting 3AM in the morning to order a phone. I think they mis-managed things, not just the technical breakdown of their google play store opening. Think about how many people with their chrome auto-refresh plugin that checked every 5 seconds for an update added on to the load of the google play server. Its really mismanaged and its like they were asking to be DDOSed with crome plugins.

Do we really need loads of threads whining about this?

I'd like a Samsung 830 256GB SSD for my laptop. Please.

I want them to make me the ceo of google.. lol.. i ll ship every nexus to every1 for free.. haha

I expect them to refund shipping cost.
Since the shipping cost is counted before tax is calculated, I expect them to refund the tax on shipping, too.

Interesting how many people only want free shipping. Maybe it should also be upgraded to next day express mail.

If people receive their nexus 7 before me, I pre'd on the 28th two weeks ago, I'll be cancelling my order with Google and purchasing from somewhere else. When you are among the first to order from the only place selling said device at said time, are you not expecting to be getting it before anyone else? When people complained about the shipping cost everyone said "well hey thats what you pay to get it before everyone else" and now those same people are arguing that their own logic doesnt make sense .Not going after you or your post here just using it as a jump off point.
People will get it a day or two before you, not weeks earlier. i can't believe someone would throw such a temper tantrum over something so ridiculous.
It could be worse. At least Google is allowing some choice for people to buy from other retailers. Although their execution of that seems pretty questionable. You were able to pay extra for shipping? I didn't know there was any other shipping choice on Google Play.
A lot of people want this tablet. Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things if your tablet arrives a few days later than someone else? Some people will have theirs tomorrow for sure. If you were able to cancel and then ordered somewhere else it would likely push your arrival date even further than if you just waited for it like everyone else who ordered from Google Play.
Just hang in there, man.

My issue is if Google is/was able to ship units off to retailers, then why can't they do the same with the preorders? Preorder shipments should have started back when they started shipping units to retailers.

Thanks for approching the topic with a bit of respect for others situations, and putting logic first. You are right and ill clarify at least in my situation, my biggest thing is that Google has room to improve their Device Launch procedures ALOT. We all want google to succeed and have many more launches, the criticism is both warranted and neccesary to support the growth of the platform we all love. Am i MAD? NO, but i dont think theres anything wrong with honest criticism of the situation, naturally the people with a vested interest are going to be the ones doing the criticising.
I just got my payment credited back for the purchase of my N7. No communication, notice or email....nothing. So I don't even know if I'm gonna get one or not. Oh well....

I really hope a lot of these users weed themselves out of the forums. And I don't appreciate change.org emails about such petty things, just my personal opinion. I feel like if the company doesn't want to give you back the $14, and it's a big deal to you, then you need to accept it. Either realize it's not the end of the world, or never buy another google product. If you have to nag the shipping out of them or coerce them, you can't come back and talk about how you would be mad about the launch but since they volunteered the shipping they're back in your good favor, just because you want to justify using something you complained incessantly about.

Well, no, they didn't force anyone to buy a Nexus 7 in the first place, but they did force many people to buy it from them.
Shortly after stores announced that they were going to start selling on Wednesday, Google began refusing to cancel orders. They told people that their unit was being prepared for shipment and it was too late to stop the package. Correct me if I'm wrong, but many of those people who tried to cancel and were denied because their Nexus was on the way didn't actually see their package shipped for another week. Meanwhile, they had to choose between picking up a unit off the shelf or waiting for a package that still had not been declared. Either way they were paying for shipping.
This is a pathetic way to express a legitimate grievance.
This is ridiculous, the shipping amount was clearly listed prior to check out, if you didn't want to pay shipping you should have gotten it somewhere else.

Possible way to get $50 refunded for 16 GB owners

Just as a heads up, there might be a way for some 16 GB owners to get their $50 dollars refunded to reflect the new price. I bought my 16 GB mid-September from Walmart and like many users was surprised to find that Google would drop the price by $50 dollars only a few weeks later. My N7 was purchased on a credit card (Chase Freedom) that apparently offers a 60 day price protection for up to $250 per claim. I wasn't sure that my credit card offered this until I gave them a call so it would not hurt to check the benefits that your credit card provides.
The claim process isn't too lengthy. Just need to fill out a form that they emailed me, provide a copy of the receipt as well as a copy of Walmart's website reflecting the new price. Kind of like a rebate I guess. Hopefully this can help some others out.
Yeah, I was peeved that I didn't grab my chase freedom. I went with Amex instead. They have a buyers remorse program but I'd still keep this device anyways if they gave me $50 back.

I am simply pointing out one of the perks that some credit cards offer their cardholders. Since I bought the N7 for $250 not long ago and now that the current price is $199, why not get the difference refunded? Only reason I do not have Walmart doing the price match is simply because I am beyond their 15 day return policy. Luckily there are credit cards out there that extend this price protection for you as part of their benefits.
I love the N7 and was content with the 16GB. I have no hard feelings towards Google for driving down the price since it is a competitive market. If there is a way for others to potentially benefit from the perks that their credit cards offer then it never hurts to share that information to those that are unaware.
In the big picture, I don't think $50 dollars is going to worry a big bank anyways. But if it allows someone to get another tank of gas or some groceries for the week, then I simply ask, why not?

I am not certain of the story policies in place for Argos. It never hurts to call the store you got it from and ask if they have a price match guarantee or some kind of similar program. I believe there are some US retail chains that allow you to price match even after purchasing for up to a certain time frame (usually 30 days). Best Buy is an example that I believe has this program but I'm not 100% certain as I haven't shopped there in forever.
If the store don't work out, why not give your credit card (assuming you bought it with a credit card) a call to see if they offer a similar benefit? As I mentioned earlier, I did not know that my credit card offered it until I called to see if they are able to match the new price.
I bought a 16GB model last Wednesday from Office Max. They have a 14 day return policy for electronics so I brought mine in yesterday and simply exchanged it for a new 32GB Nexus 7. No fuss, no muss.
Lol, that wasn't quite my point, and I should have elaborated. My point being you got $25 free credit so should only expect $25 back and when buying things you should expect the price to drop. We got a Samsung smart TV a couple months ago for £2500 and its now £2000. We can't just walk into the store and ask for the £500 we lost. Its just how things work.

If the store you bought the TV from (or credit card company) had a policy of refunding the difference if there is a price drop, and you were within that time period, suley you would have requested the £500 back?
Same principle here, they guy is just highlighting a policy that some people may not be aware of
It's not being cheap... it's managing your money. The reason you can do this is because the price dropped so quickly from release. If you can do it, go for it. $25 play store credit isn't the same as actual money. Sure, I could have $25 of apps.. but I haven't spent anything near that on the play store yet. But gas? oh yes...
I don't consider 5 months "so quickly" and if they bought it in the last month they should have known the 32gb was coming, the rumours where everywhere.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
So, since the 8GB model was discontinued, I should be able to get a full refund right? lol
But in all seriousness, I take it this might not apply to the 8GB model, since there's no actual price on it now? Maybe even less of a chance of it being possible if you bought it from Play Store?

I wasn't an early adopter. I didn't have mine since release. I had mine just about 30 days out from the release of the 32. Most stores are now smart and place it on 14 day return policy. If I had mine since release, I would of been in the similar position with your TV and wouldn't care. The money is gone, bye. My bill for the N7 is actually due November 4th, so I still haven't paid it with my own money yet, it stings a little more in those shoes.
Anyways, it's an offer the credit card provides. I looked at Discover and they do the same. It's their "purchase protection" to win over customers. It's there, no extra cost. Why not? I would use it in a heartbeat if I had the option. This has nothing to do with being cheap. Being cheap would be buying an $80 budget tablet from some no name brand hoping it will function just like the N7.

But in the end, it is what it is.
five months is very quickly. Consider that not everyone preordered the nexus 7. And the fact that supply was limited until around august. Plus certain countries didn't even have the device for a while after the US release. Five months is short. Really, Google was just stupid to think 8GB would be enough as a starting point. A 7in tablet that's portable without 3G is supposed to stream things from the cloud? Wat....

Does anyone know Google's near term production quantities?

Does anyone know how many units Google expects to receive in the near term and when they expect to receive them? I assume this is not like an iPhone when Apple says it will build 5M units, and probably builds 500K - 1M at launch. I am guessing that Google may not have built more than 10K - 20K (if that) for launch.
Is the problem we're experiencing that we don't know what to expect from Google? If Google is expecting a bunch (1,000's or 10,000's) every week for the next 10 -12 weeks, then we should all be okay. All I know is that LG makes about 100,000 phones/month. How many of these will be the Nexus 4, I have no idea. If a few hundred/month, we're probably in trouble. If 10K/month, we're probably okay.
Any info anyone has will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Maybe somebody could look into their quarterly statements or share holders conference call transcripts etc. It may reveal something....

LG sent out stock to many retailers selling the Nexus 4 at the unsubsidized price; no one reported those retailers running out of stock. LG gets more money from the sale of those units. My guess is Google prefers to let the vast majority of phones be sold by other vendors since Google looses some money from the sale of the phones sold through Playstore. The rumor flying around yesterday was that the number of units that Google received for world wide launch day was 5,000, who knows what the actual number was but, given the fact that both the UK and US Playstores sold out within half an hour, Google didn't get a lot of units. I suspect many more phones were sent to vendors selling the unsubsidized units. Google's statement on Google+ indicates that it will be an unspecified number of "weeks" before Google has any more stock to sell through Playstore. Anyone wanting a unit soon is going to have no choice but to buy at the unsubsidized price, which probably makes both LG and Google happy since LG makes more money from those sales and it saves Google money since they aren't subsidizing the units. Given the first day posts about problems with unsubsidized units picked up from other vendors yesterday, maybe waiting to see how this phone performs and what mass build quality is like is a good thing.

It depends which region. Australia got 5, Europe got 15, the US got 15, and Canada got 7 Nexus 4.

I just Googled it for you. The Chinese place closes at 11, but if you're talking about the other Chinese place, that one is open 24 hours.

I think he meant the one that's open all night. The one that closes at 11 doesn't do the Prawn Toast.
Google can handle an incredibly high server load but even the Nexus 4 and 10 release made their servers crawl. Felt it in the US when the UK order went live. That's just a testament to the incredible world-wide demand and factor in that Google Android has 70+% world marketshare.

servers can be powered up and down.
Google is so proud of their data centres that they offer virtual tours through them and yet they shall not be able to deal with the predictable load of a launch day?

Erm... if the load and demand was predictable, then they may not have been sold out in 20 minutes. I have no idea of the infrastructure behind Google's servers, but it's not their servers that couldn't cope on launch day... it's their play store app / service / whatever-you-want-to-call-it. Play web store is no Amazon, I expect the software running their web store is not on the same level as that running Amazon, as I assume Amazon processes way more purchases than the Google Play store.
Remember that these type of product launches are new to Google Play store, so it's expected that things will not go smoothly (ok, maybe not THIS BADLY, but you get my point).
As long as Google learns from this and build more capacity into the software running their web store, the launch was not an entire loss.
I only hope the price doesn't increase when they restock

Of course not. The price will stay the same, possibly even drop if a 32Gb is released.

I know you meant this as an insult. But, there are many more sources than Google for this information. People involved with the shipping, importation, Customs, delivery, warehousing, insuring, etc. of the units will have information.
Google has NDA against anything related to sales figure (that includes anything like UPS wouldn't be allows to disclose how many units they shipped). So any information you get is most likely speculations. And it is also absurd to assume 5k units.
Well according to the backorder emails. 3 weeks.

280 nexus 4's on ebay and counting...

One of those could have been mine. Instead, some f&$king a#$%ole decided they would turn a quick buck and resell it on ebay/craigslist for more. So many people weren't able to get in on this because the first wave of devices sold out so quickly. Now they're forced to either wait, or pay a premium. Am I the only one that finds that infuriating?
To top it off, T-mobile is selling the phone claiming that the MSRP is $499. How is the MSRP $499 when google sells it for $350?!
I'm unbelievably frustrated today!
I wouldn't buy one from there on principle. Also if it has any faults your screwed.
Welcome to capitalism. I bet you don't get mad when you get your paycheck.

Selling products for more than they're worth when they're in short supply is called gouging, not capitalism.
I hope someone Buys It, tell eBay seller sent you rocks, send rocks to seller, get refund, keep free nexus 4
Then you'll never see them do this again
To me this was the one thing Google should have prevented, at least initially. No one should have been able to order more than 1 or 2 in the 1st wave. I know they did this when the GN came out....was like a limit of 5 per person I think. There certainly shouldnt have been anyone allowed to purchase 200+ on initial launch.
It didn't seem like Google even had 200 in stock

I agree. I don't believe anyone could have ordered 200...but it's possible I suppose. All I wanted was one. It's just frustrating seeing so many for sale at such a huge premium on ebay...it's just greedy.

It is called making money welcome to reality mate
T-mo is selling it at MSRP because that's the device cost from LG
Google is subsidizing it on the Play Store.
People do that all the time at launches, Google mistake was allowing more than one device to be bought per person. Others are selling it because the mess that happened and they ordered more than one by accident.
After eBay fees etc Dont think they will make much 16 gig is like 400 after taxes shipping even if they sell it for 500 they'll make 50 bucks? Meh

Im not promoting fraud, not anymore than people that but out all the stocks to sell above cost, and I'm betting you're one of them
Not that much
200 isn't that much considering how many were sold to legitimate users. I think google would have done better with a strict limit of 2 per order but they went with a higher number.
As an aside I remember when the ps3 came out and resellers got pwnd because there were plenty of supplies.
One of them has 24 bids at $605! Damn!

Q.Q more please. Grow up. It's just a phone. Quit your whining.
Just wait a few weeks, your life is not going to somehow be magically worse off just because you didn't get in on the first wave.
$499 MSRP? $499 Is T-Mobile insane? Google sells them for $349. T-Mobile adds bloatware for $150.
