Is the camera as good as the reviews and you tube make out ? - Galaxy Camera Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use a slr as my main camera as I do wedding photography as a hobby
I'm looking for a portable camera which will give me as much choice in settings as my slr and looking at the reviews and you tube the galaxy camera seems to be the one
Question from you users is it really as good as the reviews, are there any issues ? Do the settings really work ? I use aperture for slowing down shots for water etc and I see the camera has the settings so do they work ?
I am going to go into my local jessops tomorrow but wanted for opinions
Thanks

Good Enough
Hi, I've had my camera for almost a week and I'm very pleased with it. Manual settings work ok I guess, I managed to take this picture of the moon the other night using manual settings.
Keep in mind the res of this picture is not the original!

moon
is this with 21x zoom ?

Had a play today the first thing which struck me was wow
The zoom is awsome and if half the features work as they should I'm Flogging my slr and getting one of these babies
Build is really good and the high res screen makes viewing pics a dream

To play a little devils advocate: The pictures this camera produces are very good, but to be totally honest a half decent SLR will blow it away in terms of pure picture quality as it is in high-end compact/superzoom territory.
Internals from this camera are quoted to come from the Samsung WB850F, and one would imagine Samsung has done some more work on them to qualify a price almost twice what you can pick one of those up for now - as well as obviously the android benefit
I mean you're effectively getting the serious hardware from a SGS3 in there... That and the screen is absolutely phenominal, makes most camera displays look like very pathetic toys.
It sold itself to me anyway I was there on launch day for one.

It depends on what you class as a review. The Samsung promo videos are excellently produced and really show off the countless features. I haven't seen too many in depth reviews so far.
My own experience is that it looks stunning, build quality solid, screen is outstanding, features are impressive, performance is excellent. But as for photographs, it still depends on 3 things... Lighting, Artistic eye for a good shot and a moderate level of understanding how cameras should be set up. These are pretty much standard for any camera you use away from the one built in to your average phone. Get these right and you can produce excellent shots that will make you proud.

Considering the OP shoots with an SLR and does wedding photography as a hobby - I have a feeling the Canon G12 will deliver superior image quality and more features that matter for a serious photgrapher for only $379 (Actually, only $299 now at B&H...), compared to the Galaxy Camera which is designed for posting to your Facebook wall at $120 (Edit: $200 right now) more. As you mention, it has the internals of a FAR cheaper P&S camera, and I'd be shocked if it delivers significant improvements in IQ over that model. After all, the $200 extra in price over the WB850F (currently $300 after rebate at Adorama) can easily be explained by the display, touchscreen, Exynos4 CPU, and at least $100 wasted on a 3G radio interface few people will use. (Most will tether to another device.)

You lucky duck. I actually did the opposite and sold my GS3 to get this. Love the better design & build quality of motorola and REALLY like the futuristic on-screen nav like the Gnex has. DId you get the white or titanium? Pics yay!!

So wait, he had a GS3, got the Atrix HD a week later then gave it less than a day before getting rid of it? Just....wow.
So, real quick first impressions. Phone is quick. No delay in doing anything. Screen is really nice. Bright and colorful. Camera takes about 5-10 years to take a picture. Battery life right now is going pretty quick, but hopefully that will level out. Blur isn't nearly as intrusive as it used to be. It's a combination of Blur and stock ICS.
Not too sure how I feel about the phone yet. I like it, but do I like it enough to keep it for a while. Don't know yet.

Hey man, I'll tell ya what: I will trade you your new Atrix 3 for my LG Thrill. I know, I know, that's not a fair trade because (as we all know) the LG Thrill is the best smartphone currently in existence. It's your lucky day. You're welcome.
but seriously, PM me if you aren't keeping it, I would be interested in buying, and depending on where you live in NY I might be able to pick it up from you in person.
If you decide to keep it, then enjoy, it looks like quite a beast. I just wish they made the battery a little more like the razr maxx, because thickness never bothered me, but I love long-lasting (that's what she said).

Yah it looks the closest to stock ICS compared to the other skins(sense, touchwiz etc) I just wish they'd leave the icons how they look on the Gnex then it would be really close to stock 4.0.4. Really looking forward to checkin out that screen. Can't wait to see it tommorow!
First impressions
i picked up my atrix hd yesterday and had a day to play with it
my first impressions:
icecream sandwich baby!!! runs like a butter!! cant wait what jellybean gonna feel like
Very little skin on top!!! almost stock... and that circle widget is awesome
build quality is good and it feels great on ur hand
holly cow the speakers are loud.... and call quality is very clear. One of the best smartphone i have ever had for call quality!! i usually get 1 bar of at&t coverage in my house but boy i had no problem calling and receiving calls(my iphone used to fail a lot)
did i mention FASTTTTTTTTTTTT before..
i benchmarked over sgs3 and HTC one x on quadrant...
i got around 1374 on sunspider java test... now thatz fast....like seriously fast... stock web browser can handle any thing u throw at it like a cake!! compare that to iphone 4's 5000 and 4s's 2500..(coz i have both of them). Now all this scores and all sounds really good but i really go by realtime performance and user experiences... and this phone comes out with flying colors.
Bluetooth 4.0 is gr8 and 4g LTE(AWESOME)
screen looks gr8 but not as good as hd lcd 2 screen...brightness could have been a bit high... but 720p for $99 not complaining
battery life can be better and it takes like 3 to 4 or more hours for charging!!!
it doesnot have physical home button but uses onscreen ones now that can be hit or miss for some... i personally like it but one annoying thing abt it is while u r playing games those buttons are still visible and u can accidently press it... but while watching media and all it tugs away for clean experience.
Man camera sux!!! sorry for bad news but yeh itz motorola and u get same quality camera as last gen smartphone!!! with icream sandwich u can take pictures with almost no shutter lag and take pics while recording video.. jus use the camera to take picture or video outside in proper sunlight...if u r lokin for camera Smartphone... this is not ur phone!!
No NFC!! and who cares!!!
overall great phone for the price point!!! if u want the latest and greatest specs and dont want to pay premium price point then jump right into it.. u wont regret it!!!

Yeh camera is bad for current industry standard !!! I took some pics out in sunlight and it looked decent enough but inside shots and low light ones are way too bad! too many noise on the pics and flash doesn't help coz it creates a lot of exposer!!! surprising enough 1080p video looks good!!! i guess its good as cam not still camera!!

True test of a camera on a mobile is how much noise it produces on night shots.
I got mine through my upgrade. I traded my old Atrix 2 and picked up the AHD for free at bestbuy and had enough from the trade in to have a screen protector put on, car dock, and a tape deck adapter. I still have $20 left on a gift card. The phone is new so they had no cases.
The screen is bright, I think the colors are a little too saturated, but overall it's an improvement over the Atrix2.
The phone looks almost like the Razr that just came out, and the phone is very light but with a good textured lightly rubberish feel to it.
ICS delivers and the AHD is snappy enough to make the experience lag free. Even with all my apps restoring I was able to surf the web and setup my email without lag.
The camera is fine, not great, but acceptable. Still better than the Atrix2.
I can't say I'm a fan of the battery. It drains a little faster than I'd like it too, but I also have tweaked any of the power settings. I've also put a heavy load on it re-syncing my apps and information, so that can contribute to my battery drain. It's acceptable, but I do see having to recharge it after a workday, instead of waiting till bed time.
Overall, with the bestbuy line upgrade deal this phone is a direct upgrade from the Atrix2. It's faster, the screen is better, and it has ICS.
The on screen button are easy and you'll prefer them over the old soft buttons.
The phone looks nice, feels nice, performs as an ICS phone should.
I see it as the mid-high range Android phone right now.
Thanks my 2 cents.
I agree the Atrix HD is much better than the Atrix 2. I think it is one of the best phone that I have used.

Very low camerda quality

Hi guys
the camera quality of this phone is terrible, the image are always affected by blurry effects and low details and much noise.

There's a FIX for this ?
SW or HW issue ?

When I had my Lg p990 I was also trying to investigate the reason of the bad camera quality.
Then I read somewhere: Better have a goo quality camera with lesser MP then have a ****ty quality camera with higher MP.
My Nokia N95 8GB with 5 MP took better photos vs LG o2x P990 8 MP.
Another deal-breaker, I was actually thinking in buying p880.....
Thank you for saving me
We're relying on LG to fix this one.
By the sound of things it's a good camera that has been badly configured.
Ksekhar has done all that he can here, but the frustration got the better of him and he's abandoned the device.
Can't say I blame him.
Can't a third party camera app fix this?
I think that only changing lenses

..yes. It doesn't have overly advertised and expensive bloatware on it that drains the battery in a day no matter what you do. Never mind force you to use some proprietary solution to transfer any files onto it, while making it impossible to use external storage media
The camera default settings just aren't calibrated very well. If you turn down the exposure time so the "correction" algorithms don't try to mesh two completely different pictures, it's no worse or better than any other camera with a plastic lens.
Seriously, though -- how much do you guys think the camera modules in these phones actually cost?
It's not just bad calibration - its bad hardware. I attached sample shots of my old galaxy s2 and the lg optimus 4x hd.
As you can see, the galaxy s2 image is MUCH sharper and clearer - especially at the edges and the color reproduction is far better as well. That's not just bad calibration ...

But pretty sure the iso speed is the same on all those pictures.. If you try with the other presets, some custom fiddling, or just use the snap-function while filming -- you won't get the same blur in the picture.
So.. conclusion: the profiles probably would have worked perfectly fine on a super-steady hand, a tripod, and perhaps also in a world where light travels at the speed of sound or so.
(btw, not making the point that the camera is awesome. Just saying that you're not going to take very good pictures with a camera like this no matter what. It is, however, possible to take reasonably good mobile phone pictures - on this camera, just like any other mobile phone camera.)

@UIQrules: Actually I leant onto something when I took those picture - and I took 20 or so on the LG and chose the best. There is no way you can get the same results like with the Galaxy S2. There is better hardware in use with the Samsung phone. It has nothing to do with software configuration.
Acutally I think the Galaxy S2 pictures are pretty awesome - even by a compact camera point of view. The LG is fine for me, because I don't need the camera very often, but I can see why someone would change for another phone, because of all those high-end smartphones out there, the Optimus 4X probably takes the worst pictures.
*nods* agree with that.
But yeah, noticed the same thing. As steady as possible, and still getting the weird blur, even at close range and perfect lighting. Then I took a few "speed" shots, at the same resolution, and it went away. So I don't know what it is, but I suspect it has something to do with the way the picture buffers are used. Amazing that it would go through qa, of course, no doubt about that. It is, like you say, something you notice right away.

Nexus 5 faulty camera software, fix on the way? (According to The Verge)

I have to say that after battery life (I knew from the moment the specs leaked, that 2300 mah wouldn't be enough) that the camera quality has been my biggest dissapointment, the phone has a HARD time focusing, the picture quality it's mediocre/sometimes decent and it really doesn't make sense since google is making a big deal out of the camera.
Check out the tag line for the nexus 5 on the play store: "Nexus 5 helps you capture the everyday and the epic in fresh new ways. It's the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made, powered by Android 4.4, KitKat."
If you go the official nexus 5 website you will find lots of info about how good the camera is : http://www.google.com/nexus/5/
or the commercial ... it's all about the camera
Anyway, according to Joshua Topolsky, The Verge's Chief Editor, there's hope and we will get an update trying to fix what's broken, do you guys think it will really make a difference? Or is this camera simply a poor camera? Here's the quote:
"Representatives from the Android team say that software is to blame for the weak performance, not hardware, and reps tell me that a fix is coming to deal with the issues in the upcoming weeks. I've even seen an early build of the new software, and while it's only a minor improvement — autofocus is a hair faster, but still inconsistent, and picture quality hasn't changed — it's nice to see Google already at work.
Of course, there's no set date for a fix at this point, and I don't know how much the camera can actually be improved through software, but if the Moto X is any kind of example, there might just be a solution to this very disheartening problem."

That's just not true, and you are very biased, it seems. Like others have said, there is significant lag in the camera focus and my Nexus 5 can take much much better photos than my Nexus S, but not any faster. And that is not okay.
I get the impression that all the effort on the software side so far has gone into HDR+
My experience playing around with it is that HDR+ not only improves detail in bright/dark areas, but it also results in sharper images overall. (This is contrary to what I have found with other HDR implementations which have resulted in blurrier images). Of course sometimes you don't want to use HDR (Maybe you want to photograph a figure silhouetted against the sunset for example).
Whilst I didn't buy the N5 as a replacement for an SLR, hopefully the non-HDR mode can be improved. After all, the best camera is the one you have with you.
(I also agree regarding the camera focus. At the very least, an option to pre-focus would make a huge difference!)
Shutter is slow... but it takes decent shots
It's no secret that Google needs to work on their camera software.

The same here, very surprised by picture quality in low light using HDR+ (for landscape mainly)... I mean im sure there are better cameras but for a phone im impressed
But i've a weird problem don't know if software or hardware but the camera app stay black screen when opened from the lock screen. it happened many times, i had to put my pin code kill the app and launch again to get the camera app working again.

Since you have those items, why don't you compare the camera shutter lag to those other phones?
You can always say that for you it's not a problem - and that might very well be as you say, but you'll never be able to deny that there might be people that want to capture "that moment" and with that lag it's just infeasible.
If your camera does not have any worse lag than say the iPhone 5s, please make a video so we can see for ourselves.

I have no problem capturing the moment, but I am also a photographer as well so I have learned to anticipate.
Again, I don't need to make video's or prove to you, I have said FOR ME, I have ZERO issues with the camera. It is fine by me.
Definitely needs to be fixed.

The shutter lag is insane for a phone with these specs. I used Camera FX and it's much better, but all the images come out very dark.

Look this thread is about issues with the Nexus 5's camera. What good are you doing when you tell people "It's not that bad guys! You just have to anticipate the 1-2 seconds lag, I learned it too!"
It's just ignorant to tell people there is no issue with the camera at all, because you yourself can work around the lag issue. You do see that this might annoy people, especially normal users?

S4 vs Htc One today..?

Hi all.I want to buy one of these two devices I'm interested what is better choise camera, rom development etc? Tnx in advance
Rom choice for both phones is near similar. The camera is really up to what you mainly use it for. As a point and shoot casual photographer (not needing high megapixel count) the One has a spectacular camera. Zoe option in sense roms is fantastic, multi capture is amazing for getting that perfect picture (it will capture a ton of pictures and you pick the best of the bunch). Due to the "ultra pixel" camera, low light images come out crisper and brighter than the higher megapixel competitors. Only downfall is you will not want to crop much of the image due to lie pixel count. For day to day regular photos, it gets the job done.
In benchmarking, the S4 is a little faster, but I see no difference between the two side by side. Unlocking the bootloader, in my opinion, is easier on HTC phones than Samsung. Only downfall is going back to complete stock usually requires s-off, which if you get a One with the 1.57 hboot, you have a 50/50 chance of s-off exploit working.

tnx for such clear answer :good:
You could find more images in the forum, but here is one I just randomly took. This was taken in a very dark part of the parking lot. The image actually turned out brighter than how dark it really was. No editing, just straight from the capture.

HTC One is "sensual" i can't say the same for the Galaxy.
The 4 UP camera is not a problem and much more better than the 13 MP of the Gs4 if you use manual settings
About the sound the One wins again
In fact except these points the 2 phones are equivalents and balanced

Yes, the sound is amazing on the one, he specifically didn't ask about that, but it is true, the audio driver on stock based roms is amazing.

Entire video made with Note 9 camera

Hi everyone.
I have spent last 4 weeks to make short video using Note 9 exclusively. The idea was to check how far I can get using mobile phone camera only and get result which would be satisfying for YT or even further. Note 9 seemed to me the best for the purpose. To do so, I sent my Note 9 120 meters to the sky attached to the drone, drowned it in a pond and finally travelled around Yorkshire in UK to get some footage. As a result I just published today video on YT and my main interest is to find out if people can really say difference. I have used Davinci Resolve in post production. Colours are changed slightly to make it look “film like”.
I didn't want to make just moving pictures so there is a story. Don't judge me too harsh however.. I am not an actor.
During the process of filming I have learnt a lot about note 9 camera and I believe I could make much better quality video now. It made me sure that it is possible to make quite serious production
with modern mobile phone if one wish to.
I hope everyone enjoy it.
Link didn't work so HERE is proper link
It's good. Well done you!

well... I did. The water wasn't my biggest concern though... My biggest concern was when Note was attached to the drone 120 meters above me... This phone is huge... and made a huge resistance in the air... and because delicate suspension I had to construct and use to eliminate vibrations I was in constant fear it will detach from the drone and .... well ... I don't want even consider what would happen...
I am not very big on YT, so do not expect plenty of views but really appreciate your comment. Thanks
I've done a few videos with the Note 9 so far and have found it to be exceptional.
See here: https://youtu.be/k-15LfCyyNg Including use of all slow motion modes as well. (Gets real dramatic around 4 minutes)
My BIGGEST complaint is the algorithm used for choosing either the telephoto lens or if there's not enough light it uses the wide lens with a sensor crop/digital zoom. In great daylight the telephoto looks just as crisp as the wide, but even the slightest bit of darkness, even pointing it directly at a sunset (seen here: https://youtu.be/jmApdV_P6Hk) and it flips over to the wide with a crop ruining the consistency. As most have noted, this same crap happens in "pro" mode as well.
I really wish in at least pro mode, Samsung would let the creator choose. I can mitigate sensor noise, I can't really mitigate lack of resolution.
Very well done on the film above! I'm impressed. Did you use Filmic Pro or the stock camera app and get the anamorphic crop in post?

Very nice videos of yours.
My idea was to make video with camera settings as they are. So I used original camera app at fully automatic. The only changes I have made were in post production
and I used Davinci Resolve 15 for both - adjusting colours and anamorphic crop.
I agree with you that "pro" mode should be fully pro I have not noticed the problem you described though. I need to check it.
My conclusion is that actually whatever we will say about mobile phone's cameras they are so good nowadays that with a bit of effort everyone can make videos like mine or yours ..
