S4 vs Htc One today..? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.I want to buy one of these two devices I'm interested what is better choise camera, rom development etc? Tnx in advance

Rom choice for both phones is near similar. The camera is really up to what you mainly use it for. As a point and shoot casual photographer (not needing high megapixel count) the One has a spectacular camera. Zoe option in sense roms is fantastic, multi capture is amazing for getting that perfect picture (it will capture a ton of pictures and you pick the best of the bunch). Due to the "ultra pixel" camera, low light images come out crisper and brighter than the higher megapixel competitors. Only downfall is you will not want to crop much of the image due to lie pixel count. For day to day regular photos, it gets the job done.
In benchmarking, the S4 is a little faster, but I see no difference between the two side by side. Unlocking the bootloader, in my opinion, is easier on HTC phones than Samsung. Only downfall is going back to complete stock usually requires s-off, which if you get a One with the 1.57 hboot, you have a 50/50 chance of s-off exploit working.

tnx for such clear answer :good:

You could find more images in the forum, but here is one I just randomly took. This was taken in a very dark part of the parking lot. The image actually turned out brighter than how dark it really was. No editing, just straight from the capture.

HTC One is "sensual" i can't say the same for the Galaxy.
The 4 UP camera is not a problem and much more better than the 13 MP of the Gs4 if you use manual settings
About the sound the One wins again
In fact except these points the 2 phones are equivalents and balanced

Yes, the sound is amazing on the one, he specifically didn't ask about that, but it is true, the audio driver on stock based roms is amazing.

Quality of the camera?

How would you guys rate the camera in the incredible S? I am finding it OK but no where near as good as my wife's sgs2. What's your thoughts? I had an iPhone 4 before and I'd put it in the same bracket as that.

i'm using htc amaze camera in my IS and its by far the best mobile cam i've used even compared it with sgs2 it beat the **** out sgs2 in stills
For me, I found the quality of IncS camera just average. It's too much noise and doesn't perform good in low light condition. Even my previous Hero (5M) has better quality than it.
I've never had any problems. It think the picture quality is excellent. Some of the still images I have look better than pictures my gf took on her 14mpx camera.

I must try and do a side by side comparison v an SGS2, I've found on the phone screen when look at it pics seem fine, when you download them and display on the computer they have no where near as much detail i've found them a bit artefact. This was a photo I took on a SGS2, I've always loved how much detail it gives.

The image you have provided looks somewhat overexposed. There's also no comparison pic to understand the issues you have brought up.
There's a guide for the dhd here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875230 you might be able to apply some of the settings on the Inc s.
the stock camera is great - but once you get rid of Sense by flashing a AOSP ROM, the camera sucks. I have CM7.1 and the one thing I miss is the Sense camera.
It is RUBBISH!

couldn't have said it better - any other form of camera except the sense one is crap
but having said that, the sense one is excellent imo
PS key2gb - check out Nik SensationXL rom, i value speed and performance of my phone over almost anything else, but his sense rom gives fantastic performance, best ive used by a mile - and i got my camera back lol
It's better than any other camera I've had one a phone.
Consider the following:
It's a phone.
Nice cam in Nik`s 2.5 rom
Buy a dslr cam if u want a good 1..4 what u want to compare incs with s2?? Cam..lol

I hear that the camera in Inc S is the best that HTC put in their phones (maybe Sensation have it even better).
I´ve got before Inc S classic phone without OS Sony Ericsson C905 (from Cyber-Shot family), and in compare, SE takes pictures better (hmmm... I think it takes the best pictures in whole world of mobile phones). But if you have enough lightened scene, then Inc S takes nice pictures.
It´s the matter of view. If I want take a quick picture of something, it is enough. For better pictures I rather take DSLR.
The quality of the camera with the stock ROM is really great. Switching to a custom rom you loose something, but considering the big picture, I wouldn't be back. HTC will probably never update this phone to ICS.

It's fine, but the flash led can not flash with correct situation.
It is no good , but you may try to install the third software of camera , for example :LG camera, 360 camera , it's better
The quality of HTC IS Camera seems quite good for me. But compared to my previous (Sams i8910) phone its certanly worse...
The i8910 had one of the best cameras! It has juicy colors in photos and video! Was checking it with my friend's Nokia N8, my i8910 and HTC IS.
1) Nokia N8
2) Samsung i8910 Omnia HD
3) HTC Incredible S

funny, I was just checking out his thread. I want to wait for CM9 to come out and then I might switch back to Sense. I really like my set up right now and I'm interested to see what CM9 brings to the table.

Is the camera as good as the reviews and you tube make out ?

I use a slr as my main camera as I do wedding photography as a hobby
I'm looking for a portable camera which will give me as much choice in settings as my slr and looking at the reviews and you tube the galaxy camera seems to be the one
Question from you users is it really as good as the reviews, are there any issues ? Do the settings really work ? I use aperture for slowing down shots for water etc and I see the camera has the settings so do they work ?
I am going to go into my local jessops tomorrow but wanted for opinions
Thanks

To play a little devils advocate: The pictures this camera produces are very good, but to be totally honest a half decent SLR will blow it away in terms of pure picture quality as it is in high-end compact/superzoom territory.
Internals from this camera are quoted to come from the Samsung WB850F, and one would imagine Samsung has done some more work on them to qualify a price almost twice what you can pick one of those up for now - as well as obviously the android benefit
I mean you're effectively getting the serious hardware from a SGS3 in there... That and the screen is absolutely phenominal, makes most camera displays look like very pathetic toys.
It sold itself to me anyway I was there on launch day for one.

It depends on what you class as a review. The Samsung promo videos are excellently produced and really show off the countless features. I haven't seen too many in depth reviews so far.
My own experience is that it looks stunning, build quality solid, screen is outstanding, features are impressive, performance is excellent. But as for photographs, it still depends on 3 things... Lighting, Artistic eye for a good shot and a moderate level of understanding how cameras should be set up. These are pretty much standard for any camera you use away from the one built in to your average phone. Get these right and you can produce excellent shots that will make you proud.

Considering the OP shoots with an SLR and does wedding photography as a hobby - I have a feeling the Canon G12 will deliver superior image quality and more features that matter for a serious photgrapher for only $379 (Actually, only $299 now at B&H...), compared to the Galaxy Camera which is designed for posting to your Facebook wall at $120 (Edit: $200 right now) more. As you mention, it has the internals of a FAR cheaper P&S camera, and I'd be shocked if it delivers significant improvements in IQ over that model. After all, the $200 extra in price over the WB850F (currently $300 after rebate at Adorama) can easily be explained by the display, touchscreen, Exynos4 CPU, and at least $100 wasted on a 3G radio interface few people will use. (Most will tether to another device.)

Camera

What is everyone's thought of the camera? I've read a couple of articles and they just don't rate the camera well. Thanks for anyone who can give an honest response to whether the camera is just all hype.

In my opinion I don't think it's something to get exciting over. Yes it does perform well in lowlight, but lacks detail in well lit images compared to most other phones. I'd honestly prefer just a regular 13 megapixel camera, but I really don't take many photos so it doesn't bother me much. If I want great images ill take a dedicated camera with me. Besides the lack of detail, I think all the features that it comes with and Zoe is really cool. Once I get my hands on the device ill know if the extra features it carries will be enough for me to forget about the lack of detail in images in well lit images.

Having used it for a few seconds I think the sensor is great, definitely a step in the right direction. The problem is HTC's overly aggressive noise reduction algorithm that smooths over all of the details inherent in the picture. If you could turn it down so there was some more noise/grain I think most people would say that this is the best camera phone sensor on the market besides maybe the Nokia PureView (which I have not seen in person). The dynamic range is seriously point and shoot good and the low light images speak for themselves.

Is the camera really as bad as the reviews say?

I've currently got a rooted HTC sensation which I'm due to upgrade. My choice is between the HTC one and the galaxy s4, but my choice seems to come down to the camera quality. Is the one camera really as bad as the reviews suggest?
I havent got any examples that I can post but the quality seems much crisper that my previous device (Sensation)
Low light shots seem ok and auto-focus seems to work much quicker. Zoe is also a nice feature!
link to the review?
Why create a new thread? There's at least 3 threads talking about the camera....... :banghead:

No need to be like that, that thread has loads of pictures from all the one series. Not specifically the new one. And the various reviews I've read seem to conflict, some saying it's okay, others stating it's useless. Hence me asking for anyone's first hand experience with the phone now it's been released.
Start at the last page and work backwards, plenty of user pictures from the One.

Well, for serious photography I hang a DSLR around my neck and carry a couple of extra lenses in the backpack. For snapping a quick shot whilst I'm just pottering about or hanging with the guys the camera is far more than adequate.

Sorry man but today we have already seen a topic closed for plane trolling and in this context your thread title seemed a little out of line especially since there are already lots of user pictures and opinions available, i needn't speak about dozens of reviews. Didn't mean to be rude but next time better check first what info is available and maybe select a more appropriate title.
In my opinion i was expecting the photos taken to be a bit better but i am also quite optimistic about the fact that software updates might turn it into an excellent smartphone camera.

It's okay, not trying to bash the phone, just trying to find out which phone to upgrade to!
I saw that thread you're talking about and even commented a little, but unfortunately there were a couple of Samsung fanboys who turned it into a company vs company thread instead of just having unbiased comparisons between phones.
I don't have a decent camera, nor do I have the option to carry one around all the time since I'm normally dragging a couple of infants around with me, I'm not really an avid photographer either. I just want it to be at least as good as the one on my sensation since I do use it fairly regularly, but can't make my mind up on handset! I think I may have to just go into a phone shop and compare for myself.
Like I keep saying
The HTC One camera is an extremely well equipped camera, OIS, super fast shutter, low light ability, f2.0, wide angle lens, powerful macro ability, best HDR on phones, all combined gives a very powerful camera
However as usual with HTC it will still require manual efforts from ur side those camera settings are there to be used
Compared to your sensation its light years ahead of it, compared to the One X you loose something and gain something in return
Things to keep in mind always reduce sharpness in HTC cameras and for the One in specific auto enhance or contrast increase might be needed as well due to the extra light in its day light photos
But it's not match to the 13MP detail from the sgs4 camera purely in terms of resolution
I came from DHD, wife still has Sensation. We're in full agreement that the One takes much better pictures.
Sent from my Tricked out HTC One via xda-developers application
I am in similar position. For me which phone I choose next will be down to camera. One thing I missed after iphone was the way you cam trim videos before sending to get correct file size. As far as I am aware only htc on android can do this - forward to 1145 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23nQyOpixiU&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
I will no doubt get the one but camera is a worry as htc are not really promoting it in any adverts I have seen so far in uk. More blink and boom ?? Waiting for 64gb too but if we ever get it who knows ???
The camera thread is great but I am now info overloaded so really have to go test one in more depth.

Do you use digital zoom or lot, or blow up pics after you make them? IMO, this is the weak point of the camera. It's lens is 28mm (35mm film equivalent) and you don't have the latitude to zoom that you would with more MP. Personally, I am more a telephoto guy than wide angle so it bugs me, but everyone is different.
(I decided to punt and keep my S3 for now. Camera plus questions on headphone audio. Mixed feeling though, as I really like the low light attributes and boomsound speakers.)
Just wait until release and judge for yourself and decide if it's really an amazing camera.
I have never, in too many years to mention, used a digital zoom. Never saw the point in stretching one sensor pixel to fill 4, 9, 16 or more final image pixels.
Sent from my Tricked out HTC One via xda-developers application
Yeah, digital zoom is terrible regardless of the camera used. I do however sometimes zoom in on my photos, which I assume won't be much good with the one.
Afraid that zooming after the event won't get you anywhere with the One. Granted, although my phone's have progressed from being a phone/txt device that could play snake when I was bored all the way to a miniature computer that can make calls as well I've never viewed them as a camera replacement. Hell, you can get a little 8Mp snapper that's smaller then current headline phones for a fraction of the cost AND they've got optical zoom with a lense that retreats into the body of the camera when you put it back in your pocket.

HTC One vs Samsung S3 - audio recording comparison

How come HTC put a 4MP camera in the One?

Whenever manufacturers pull unexpected moves, I always get a bit curious as to why. Now, I'm perfectly aware of that megapixels doesn't mean much for the outcome of the photo, but it seems that because of the low MP in the HTC One camera, the pictures don't seem to end up as detailed as in 13MP shooters, and the low MP show again when you zoom the photo.
I'm still getting this phone, though. It's the only one that's interesting right now. Lagdung can take a hike.
Good to see that you have seen the light. I flurted briefly with an s3 which was not a bad device but doesn't compare with the 'one.'
The camera has it's pluses and minuses compared with other top end devices but, for me at least, the pluses considerably outweigh the minuses.
I am confident that you won't be disappointed.
Do you use your phone to snap pics of your mates down the pub? 4Mp with 2um sensor pixel is perfect. Fast shutter even in low light and decent file size.
Do you use it to go out and capture windswept vistas at the finest detail level possible? If so then there isn't a phone camera out there that will do them real justice - take the Canon and do the job properly.

anyway, the camera is pretty good for general use, as long as you dont always keep zooming in on the images. quality is fine. at least it blows the Nexus 4 camera out of the water
The larger pixel size equates to a faster shutter speed that makes sense. Pictures are so good.

Don't forget about OIS. Obviously that helps with videos, but it seems to really help stabilize the hand for quick shots as well.
