[Q] Problem with ADW Launcher in CM7 RC4.1

Hi all,
I have a question while enjoying my Milestone to the max, thanks to CM7!
Since RC4 I have a problem with ADW Launcher after booting the device.
First it seems like there's a delay connecting to the SD card, because the icons of apps installed on SD don't show up on my homescreen. Instead a stock or native icon is visible.
Then the homescreen goes black for a few seconds and reloads completely. The icons of apps on SD still don't show, and my weather widget says it can't connect.
After a little while a message pops up, saying that "activity ADW Launcher in process android.process.acore doesn't respond". I can choose to close ADW Launcher or wait. In both cases all loads well after making one of those choises, it doesn't matter which one.
Since I suspected some kind of delay affecting the SD card and Internet connection, I expected this to be (partially) solved in RC4.1 according to this release note: "fix: kernel modules sometimes installed too late (sd-ext not mounted, overclock not applied)". But unfortunately in my case it isn't.
I already have tried disabling Sense previews and Wallpaper Hack in ADWLauncer settings, but that didn't help. Am I the only one with this problem or does it sound familiar? In that case, what can be done?
Thanks a lot,
Gerard

the problem of the launcher crashing is sumthin everyone faces .. n it does slow the phone down as well .. ask a techie if u can remove adw launcer and install another launcer cuz ther has to b a launcher faster than adw ..
Okay, but I can't imagine this behaviour occurring on every device at the moment?
on most devices u c this prob .. tht is wher stock rom is better and snappier ..
in rc4 sumtimes the power control widgets in the notification bar also disappear .. its werid ..

Not on supercharged phones. No launcher redraws. Ever.
Plus, gingerbread packed with apps feels as light and fast as stock froyo with nothing installed on it.
You should try it.

I sure will. In fact, I wanted to supercharge my Milestone since I read the topic, but I'm still struggling through the loads of information trying to figure out what I need and need not to do. Once I created a step-by-step instruction, I'm good to go.
Maybe you can help me to make me see the big picture. From what I understand, I need an app like AMM and one of your scripts. In the app I can modify the minfree settings. The script takes care of loading these settings on every boot. Is this correct? If so, can you please tell me which files I need for the first 2 steps? I don't need extra apps like GScript and Busybox so far, do I? Trying to start off simple...
Any additional instructions are welcome!
Thanks a lot,

Yes all the steps are in the Gscript section.
You don't need AMM or AKMO but I use AMM just for diagnosing and poking around to see how everything is working.
All you gotta do is install busybox and gscript as per instructions in the Gscript section.
Hi all, and especially Zeppelinrox,
Since CM7 RC4 my launcher hardly ever gets NOT redrawn/reloaded. Very annoying. I've tried every setting and combinations of settings with no luck. So I've decided to step into the deep and give Superlaunch and Bulletproof a go. I'm still not sure if I understand the whole package though, so I'd like to verify whether or not I did the right thing.
I've just installed Gscript and in there I activated from script v5: balanced, status and the Bulletproof launcher. I unchecked the "keep launcher in memory" setting. Then I rebooted.
Now I'm gonna do some tests, but was this procedure correct and complete? And does this stick after a reboot? If not, how can I make it stick for both Superlaunch and Bulletproof? I assume I don't have to manually execute these scripts after rebooting every time?
I'll report my findings later today. Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Gerard
The Netherlands
Yes it all sounds correct and the settings will persist after reboot.
However, by default the launcher is not bulletproof you can run that script separately if tou still get redraws.
V6 has Hard To Kill Launcher which is as strong as it can be without bulletproofing - much stronger than lock home in memory.
With V6, bulletproofing should not be necessary at all while allowing games to be played.
But it is still an option for those that don't play games.

Well, I can tell you this: it's awesome! I've been poking around for hours now, and never had a single redraw. My Milestone runs smoother than ever. Fan-tas-tic!
I just don't understand the AMM readings. It always shows it's own mild settings, but shouldn't it display the script values?
Thanks a lot!
Gerard
Which script did you apply?
AMM is stupid that way lol
Just be sure SuperUser give no permissions to AMM
AKMO will show the current minfree values when you run it though - just disable it's apply settings at boot option - or don't give superuser permission.
I applied Balanced3 from gscript-Custom_ROMS_SuperCharge+BulletProof_Pack_v5.zip (10.7 KB, 461 views)
In SuperUser permissions for AMM are denied.
So AMM doesn't read the current values at all and I'm OK? Guess I'll have to calculate the values myself from the show status script then, or is there an easier (preferable newbie) way to verify if all settings are correct?
Now we're at it, later today I'm gonna install the CM7 update. I know I'll have to recalibrate the battery after that, but do I have to run these scripts again too?
Thanks again!
Gerard
Ya I'd like to figure out a way to do the calculation with the script.
I haven't been able too get to far on that as of yet.
I mentioned in my prvious post - you can quickly check with AKMO - Autokiller Memory Optimizer - just disable the apply on boot option.
There is also Minfree Manager.
Yep, run the scripts again after flashing a rom
I just installed AKMO and it displays the scripts values flawlessly!
Don't know what AMM did, but apparently it kept on changing the values to very strange numbers after a reboot. I can't remember them, but the 3rd one was 256 (1). I'm sure it had no root permissions though. But now AMM is gone, all loads well after rebooting according to AKMO.
It makes all the difference in the world, I can tell you that. My Milestone runs like a complete new device. So smooth, fast and stable. I can recommend it to everyone!
I have just one more question. What script is best suitable for running big map apps, like Google Earth? It's lagging, freezing and closing with the standard minfree settings. The Balanced3 script makes it better, but can it improve even more?
Thanks again and again and...
Gerard
I dunno.
That's a big app
Maybe you can overclock it more LOL
btw... I DID IT... I got the script to convert pages to mb... woohoo
I'm already at 1000 Mhz, can't seem to get it running at 1100 or higher though, cause it keeps rebooting from the M logo. But maybe there's potential for a script handling "big apps" ;-)
Anyway, congrats on your progress with the scripts! I wonder why devs haven't implemented this in their ROM's yet.
Now it's time to move on to my next project: an ext-partition. I read so much about it. Still no idea about the advantages though, so I'll start by figuring that out first.
Thanks for all your help and good luck with your work!

Use that and only do the steps to create the ext2 partition. Then after that, reboot CM7 and you should have all of your apps on your ext2 partition, thus making your phone a bit faster(less internal memory used) and the potential for a TON of more apps installed on your phone, depending on the size of your ext2 partition.
Really! You just saved me a lot of reading, thanks!
So after I created the ext2 partition through my PC, rebooting the device handles moving my apps? No reinstalling, no manual uninstalling from internal memory? But how about apps without apps2sd option, will they be unaffected? Or does ext2 simulate internal memory, so all apps can be installed there? If so, will apps from the Market then automatically be installed on ext2, with or without apps2sd?
Sounds great!
Thanks in advance,
Gerard

All you should have to do is reboot and the reboot might take longer than usual as CM7 would be transferring all your apps to the ext2 partition. All apps that are installed afterwards are installed on your ext2 partition.

[Q] Safe bloat to disable?

First time Samsung user here. I'm trying to make life without CM a bit more pleasant (yes I actually want to use the stock firmware for a while, it's kinda nice ). Does anyone have a list of TouchWiz components that can be disabled natively or with Titanium Backup without any negative effects?

-Help- Lag After Jelly Bean Update.

Hi Everyone,I am new to the forum(But following it from many days)
As the title suggests, after I updated the firmware through Official LG PC Suite, i am experiencing massive lags.
Used RAM is always at approx 700 Mb. Opening more than 1 tab in Chrome phone lag badly. There are launcher redraws and much more.
Tried a factory reset but it made no difference.
Usually wiping cache, valpik and resetting to factory settings before flashing solves the problem, and most of the time its an app, usually a battery saver app with permissions to modify CPU speeds that causes this.
Also please stop capitalizing each and every word in you sentence. It's not a title!

You should carry out a factory reset AFTER the upgrade. Wiping cache and dalvik (not valpik) cache is done from a custom recovery, which I preusme you have not installed on your phone?

I suggest you go back to ics like i did. jellybean is full of crap and ram usage is always high for no reason.
If not. then root the phone and freeze some apps, disable others and uninstall the ones you don't use. to keep your launcher from redrawing then force it into memory with ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 paste this at the end of your build.prop in system folder.

the only way you can follow instructions incorrectly is if you brick the phone... and i found a lot of issues with jb mainly performance.
Lagg is resolved with a factory reset. Dont restore your files and apps just install them again after factory reset! Not all files and apss from ICS have same settings and functionality on JB so that can lead to lagg..
RAM is here to be used,if RAM isnt used then your phone isnt performing his full potential! If RAM isnt used that means that apps in the phone are not working,so when you open them you will get lagg because they have to start up every time..Some apps drain battery so you can grenify them but apps have to run for your phone to be fully exploited!

You should install through LGFlash Tool for the cleanest install, after that root and install your apps again. It's a pain in the ass but, the best way... About ram, if it's being used, the phone performance is better but that might reflects in the battery life. I use to close all processes after use the phone and my battery life is very good, the delay to access the apps 1st time after being stopped is about half of a second, soo... I can live with that.
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda app-developers app
Seems to me that as long as you have all the default services running, you hit less than some limit of ram, or a period of inactivity, and the OS preemtively starts garbage-collecting programs in mem - among others, the launcher/homescreen app. Makes sense, more or less, to do that. Because it'll free up priority for apps that don't actually receive input (such as the launcher screen).
But on the other hand, homescreens can contain lots of apps, and could take more than 5 seconds to load, so not such a brilliant idea to destroy the cache. Meanwhile, services you never use tend to poll the system on their own, and suddenly they're treated with more attention than the programs you're actually using..
Seems the running programs being replaced by fifty useless services is less of a problem the more free ram you have, though.
And that's why a lot of "garbage" was un-installed on my device (other users made the same).

WhatsApp& Hangouts Notification problem...

Dear xda users,
I have quiet some time a problem getting notification message in whatsapp and hangouts (even in the previously version on Google talk).
When i clear all apps with Task Manager. Exit to home screen. meaning, Whatsapp is not running in the background, I get no pushed messages, no notifications. Nothing at all.
I then launch the app and get all my "missed" message ,then exit back to the home screen and now I see the messages and notifications.
The same thing happen when the screen is off, actually it seem it start there.
I have no limitation on the background apps, surf only with 3g and it is happen also with hangouts,it is started a few months back before google update her app,in the old Google talk also.
The most strange thing is when i launch a game, because it uses the internet when i exit from it and not clear my task manger it seems like whatsapp and hangout getting the message for day or two and there again nothing, maybe i imagine i really do not know
My phone model is i9305 with official Samsung Nordic Rom.
i used avast anti virus until couple days ago.
By the way whatsapp+ that i saw here recently could help me in any way?
I really appreciate your help. :good:
want to clear it one and for all to enjoy my phone.
Thanks in advance,
David
Hi David,
you kinda answered yourself, the problem is with the task manager. I suggest reading the following:
http://www.howtogeek.com/127388/htg-explains-why-you-shouldnt-use-a-task-killer-on-android/
Chris Hoffman can explain better than me
BTW it's also says directly on whatsapp that it will not work well with task managers.
Cheers
Dear eytan123,
Thank you for your replay,I want to clarify myself and tell you that i do not use any external task manger, but only the built in one in jellybean.
In addition even when i do not "clear" my ram it still no working,i also compare it to others galaxy 3-i9300&i9305 that use and clear the ram with the built in task manager and still not suffer from this Phenomenon.
I guess Samsung keeps this app because it lets inexperienced users(unlike you and myself, or for that matter anyone in XDA ) the feeling that they can upgrade their performance...anyhow - It's strongly suggested that you don't activate\use ANY task killer.
Why not trying the suggested method for a couple of days? I'm sure your results will be much better
Thanks again for trying to help, but i already try this couple of times before open this thread.
Unfortunately not a single method that i tried was useful to me.
like to hear if you have another idea
upp
bumping a thread more than once every 24 hours is against the rules. don't post until you read them
Just noticed you asked about the whatsapp+ - it's not supposed to make things any better, only customizations. And you said the problem persists at the new hangouts.
If you're certain that your internet connection(cellular of course) is working good, before I suggest wiping and re-flashing or trying another rom I suggestthat you use the following app(it increases battery usage in a VERY MINOR way):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hbmRxbGltYXgucHVzaGZpeGVyIl0.
Try clear data
Make sure sync is on

Hi,
Thanks eytan123 but this app that you gave me it is just for rooted phones,i do not want to root my phone in this moment, about the rom,it is the same problem that i experienced in my previous official rom.
Still glad to hear about this app for future notice
Thanks hello5629,if you mean to clear app data i already try this also
You wanna tell me that only my phone suffer this problem?
Just making sure - have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the apps ?
yep,several times..
Well I guess that leaves you with factory reset your phone.
But since your'e not rooted keep in mind you'll lose all your apps..
ya i know,i do not really want to do it,i think i will open a thread in general android forum, maybe there when it is not only i9305 community, maybe some will have the answer.
Thanks again for your effort

[Q] [help] problem with Xperia T

I don't know is this really a problem or not, but it really bother. my broblem is about multitasking, it looks like my phone doesn't have multitasking (like ios! )
for example I open opera and let it load some pages then ttpod and play a music, after them go to an explorer, and I go back to opera it's now closed and I have to re-load the pages.
overall I can't keep more than 2-3 apps open at the same time.
is there any solution for this problem?

I've tried some tweaks with some apps such as Pimp my Rom and Android tuner but to be honest it made it even worse! and I had to do full wipe!

you use opera for FB, hm?
that version of Opera mini comes with many bugs, one of them is AutoRotation, when you rotate your phone, it jumps out of the app, maybe another bug is what you are facing, not being able to chache the pages in background, MAYBE...
try another browser, like Default or Dolphin or Chrome, and see if the problem is still there with those apps, if not, then the problem is BUGGY opera mini, which i guess so

it's so weird
never experienced this issue, in NO phone of mine
i know this might a bit noobie guide, but first of all, uninstall unnecessary apps, maybe you've loaded your phone with a ton of apps, which certainly eat up RAM even if they are not running, that's the way Android manages RAM, so, uninstall whatever thing you don't use...
if the problem still exists there, then update your phone or flash another firmware, for example go back to ICS to see it helps or not..
and let us know, we will hepl you as much as possilbe, bro

i know this might a bit noobie guide, but first of all, uninstall unnecessary apps, maybe you've loaded your phone with a ton of apps, which certainly eat up RAM even if they are not running, that's the way Android manages RAM, so, uninstall whatever thing you don't use...
if the problem still exists there, then update your phone or flash another firmware, for example go back to ICS to see it helps or not..
and let us know, we will hepl you as much as possilbe, bro

All my apps are less than 80, I've uninstalled or freezed many apps by titanium back up. I have always more than 200-300 free RAM, and with a task killer I have about 400-500 free RAM space.
I have this problem since I've bought this phone (more than 3 months) and during this time I always had this problem, but recently it became worse.

ooooooooffffff, if you could fix rotation bug, it would be highly appreciated bro
eagerly waiting to see the bug-free facebook-enabled opera mini right here from you
Removal of bloatware really helps here. I find Firefox sometimes closes as it uses a lot of memory, but it beats all others in terms of usability + ability to download any files (sometimes chrome or stock just downloads a dumb .txt file, can't believe they still haven't fixed that) but yeah remove useless apps it helps a lot
