[Q] Honest question here... - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If things like...
FM Radio
Camera
UMTS Video Calling
etc.. etc..
DO NOT work, and will just as likely NEVER WORK on custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod, then as far as I see it, it's a loss.
So what ~are~ the advantages to using something like CM10, besides the OHHH SHINY SHINY Jellybeen.
I mean yeah I can now use Chrome on my SGS, and that's about the only bright spot I see in it.
But I figure there has to be something more compelling out there that I'm either failing to see, or perhaps unwilling to see.
Would love to see your feedback on this!

People care about different things for there needs. You might want a fully functional camera whereas the other guy doesn't care.
Personally I would never choose CM10 over CM9. Why? Because the video recording and playback on CM10 is annoying and choppy. The battery life is awful compared to CM9. I wouldn't give up CM9 and good battery life, a properly working camera for a very little tiny extra speed.
The next guy to comment might not care about that as much and say CM10 is better.
Preference and wants/needs.

Two things I dislike about SpritFM are:
1: It's not free. Feel free to call me cheap, but why should I have to purchase this App for 1.99€ when it should be standard.
I was under some delusion that Samsung had even made this "Driver" available last summer for the benefit of the Open Source Community.
What ever happened to that? The way I recalled reading it we should've had a working FM by now.
2: I'd also like to air on the side of caution! Its not like SpritFM has the best reputation.
Or this is to say that SpritFM has a reputation of wrecking Phones Speakers.
This may, or may no longer be the case, but again SEE POINT 2!
I also love the Video Call function of my Phone, I have read and understood sadly why that's never gonna happen.
And I'll coincide that the Camera might be just down to FUD.
But again. What are the advantages to updating, besides the OOOHHH I updated because I could?
Is it really just for Chrome?

Well, for me,I don't care about the camera's working or not.'Cause all i want is test new things, new functions. If i want to use ,I'll flash back.

[THINK TANK] Porting TouchWiz camera to CM7

Hello,
this thread is made for a possibility to port it over to the CM7 or MIUI ROMs.
You have to admit that it is way better and if you don't you're on crack.
Anyways I keep getting the invalid package.
Any thoughts?
Probably wont happen because there needs to be touchwiz frameworks, and cm7 and miui are stock.

There is NO way to do this without Touchjizz. So to make this work we would need Touch-whizz framework. If we reverted to Touch-whizz framework CM7\MIUI would no longer AOSP, it would be just another Samsung based rom. We need to focus on implementing some of the TW features and improve the UI on the existing MIUIcamera.apk. Just mt 2 cents......could be totally wrong........but heres a start to your thread!

Thats one of the reasons i left Miui besides Battery Life...
The camera just plain sucked, the options were either if you want flash or not which we don't have and auto focus was ****ed up.

Probably because its just a app that uses your camera and shows a preview of what you just took a picture of, so its like any other app on the market that uses camera...
whereas the TouchWiz is directly implemented into Samsung Phone's and Miui/CM7 devs can try and make their own camera's better, but they can't put TouchWiz in there, because then the whole point of being AOSP is gone.

Dont know when you left MIUI but the camera is improving slowly now....theyve added some effects settings and res settings.....anti-shake...delay snap, burst, screen shutter ,reference line....but yeah it still sucks, but ''could'' be just as good. Its also got quality settings for video (high, med, low) (30m) but dont know what quality it actually measures up to.
I can see it now...having a virtual box to run a camera! lol. "Samsung Camera Emulator" lol!
Yea but the thing I hate about the Video cam is how it records it like an iphone with portrait mode and the 2 sides black

Camera update

Do you think the camera drivers or software will get updated???? or is the problem more with the hardware/sensor??? I am using Camera360 app and can get around most of the lighting issues but I was just wondering if there would be something official maybe.
A lot of people have been complaining about the camera, so I don't think an update would be unlikely.

Has anyone tried any of the non-stock camera software? Does it make a difference?
Answered my own question... at least I tested it, the answer is up to you.
Attached below are 2 photos as nearly identical as I could make them. One with ZoomFX and the other with the stock software.
I think that the ZoomFX one is better... now all I have to do is see if I can figure out how to get the ZoomFX one to be widescreen.

Let's say experianced noob ^^ well for a basic user, you can in fact use both... more battery, stock stability and compatibility are on zeus side. About more features and feeling cool and wanting the latest, take CM10 But you really should at least try both or even more. It took me really long to decide and in fact i am still changing quite often, to check out new features and development. Just install one, set it up to your needs, try/test it, back it up, flash another one, try it and decide whats best for you. You should also try ICS repack. If sms works fine for you, it should be one of the best daily drivers available till now (at least I liked pretty much, but sms doesnt work for me...) so have fun

I used zeus for performance and stability.. now im using cm10 for the looks and new feeling
I've already tried both and I can honestly said that Zeus is my fav. CM10 is still very buggy...
I used Zeus untill Aokp ics was released and now i'm on Aokp jb and i have tried cm10 to.
If you want stability use Zeus.
If you want to be up to date use cm10
well said by nooby and romwiz
zeus is more stable and cm10 is still a little buggy
i personally stopped using zeus since a week and am pretty happy with miui and cm10
if you don't game much, go cm10
if you game, go zeus and it has the same looks
I have tried both of them.
personally, i think Zeus is more suitable for me. It has a better performance and stability.
However, if u want to try the new functions, just go for cm10...

I think ZEUS is for daily use (6.4 or 7.03) and all ICS, CM10 or whatever, you'll have to make some compromise in using your phone (no gps or no video, not being able to install the apps you want...).
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to change the notification bar's function shortcuts in zeus, like in cm??

Everyone in 4.4 using ART. Conclusion?

I feel like the device is much snappier. I heard battery is supposed to be better with it as well but I can't confirm. The xda app was never the best , now it is almost fluid o.o. or at least noticeably better. What do you have to say ?
i was told to add this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1qbko3/art_broken_apps/
edit: I would like to add that the apps i notice this most is for instance, when i use hangouts and i'd right ALOOOOOOOT with someone and then scroll up at a fast rate, it would stutter. Now, this stutter is nearly gone.
XDA - xda app is one of the most noticeable, stutter has been reduced by such a large margin that you'd have to try it yourself to believe it.
G+ would have the occasional hickup when scrolling through news posts. Next stop would be the play store, it used to stutter a lot as well, now it's become a lot better. Just for the hell of it i compared it to my sister's note 2 and the difference is there.
I doubt this is a placebo effect, i'm even considering to make a video as proof with dalvik on and off for the hell of it.

Paste that into your system lib/app and install the launcher app in the folder and voila: you've got it all.

Well, it's kind of obvious, if you want the best experience for now you're going to want to go with the official 4.4, since the developers need their time to work their magic.
I have no crashes, i'm using ART so far cause i could care less about what's app. I'll report in about battery life observations once i've at least had this thing running for a whole day.
Feels really smooth so far; don't use any apps that crash(thankfully) on ART. Hard to tell with the battery as I came off a custom kernel that was picked for low power usage. Like with any new firmware, it usually takes a few days of my phone running before I can really judge things. Got to give all the apps running a little time to muck things up to get a solid feel for real world performance; but I'm hopeful from what the past few hours performance/battery wise.

Just switched to art on today's stock KitKat after running art on nexus 5 port for a week. No stability issues and have 165 apps installed with no bugs. Battery life is improved by approximately 15% and performance is much quicker
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. I couldn't notice any tangible difference, performance-wise. I tried it on SlimKat, though. I may probably give it a second try now on stock but the whole idea of having non-working apps like Whatsapp and TiBu just takes the appealing away for now.
Could this just an elaborate hoax to test the placebo effect of Android optimization? I don't understand the true potential if it.

I have a question. I have been reading about kitkat apps. It seems that particularly the web browser is pretty crap. Can anyone verify these comments? I don't know that it will be an issue, but I was curious if anyone here has any personal experience. If it's bad, I'll stay with 4.2.2 . Thanks.

The launcher is just OK, it's really Google Now's version of a launcher with it built in. I found it be a little slow and very little customization. Fine for the masses who don't know any different (which are the majority of users, sadly). Nova destroys it all day long.
Far as KitKat goes, it all depends on the ROM and the device. Some ROMs are way behind and some are way ahead. I hate to say it but if CM11and SlimKat were all I had to choose from, I'd probably go back to 4.2. Yes CM is the foundation of all ROMs so I'm grateful it's around, but for KitKat they still have a long way to go, at least for S2. Same for SlimKat. Just too many issues. The unofficial ROMs are kicking major butt though. For the Exhibit, I'd stick with 4.2 for now although to be fair I haven't tried the newest KitKat ROMs available here lately. @jfbs is working hard to get you guys a stable 4.4 though!

I can easily install Nova again. It's the launcher I use now and I love it. Thanks for the advice. I am looking forward to @jfbs' rom. I was just eager to try kitkat because it was supposedly designed to work on phones like ours, where ram is at a premium. Initial reviews did say it ran much lighter, but I am not sure if it really makes a difference.

Ultimately there is one truism I have found, functionality and speed are mainly hardware dependent. You can have the best ROM ever made in history but if the device doesn't have the hardware to back it up, it's useless. I booted the Exhibit for the first time in almost two weeks the other day and it was so much painfully slower than what I have now it isn't even funny. It reminded me how thankful I need to be that I have something else to be honest. A good KitKat ROM may help this device, IDK.
Yeah, the browser on Slimkat is all slow and FC's, even when you try to use a different browser than stock. With the other 4.4 ROMs we have I think you can just use a different browser if the stock has FC issues.
I stay using 4.2, since I can OC higher than 1012MHz and can swap the sd's.
FC stands for force close? Thanks for the advice. I will stay with 4.2 for now. I will see what @jfbs comes up with.
