Everyone in 4.4 using ART. Conclusion? - Nexus 4 General

I feel like the device is much snappier. I heard battery is supposed to be better with it as well but I can't confirm. The xda app was never the best , now it is almost fluid o.o. or at least noticeably better. What do you have to say ?
i was told to add this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1qbko3/art_broken_apps/
edit: I would like to add that the apps i notice this most is for instance, when i use hangouts and i'd right ALOOOOOOOT with someone and then scroll up at a fast rate, it would stutter. Now, this stutter is nearly gone.
XDA - xda app is one of the most noticeable, stutter has been reduced by such a large margin that you'd have to try it yourself to believe it.
G+ would have the occasional hickup when scrolling through news posts. Next stop would be the play store, it used to stutter a lot as well, now it's become a lot better. Just for the hell of it i compared it to my sister's note 2 and the difference is there.
I doubt this is a placebo effect, i'm even considering to make a video as proof with dalvik on and off for the hell of it.

I tested it, system processes were failing, reverted back to 4.3... I tested the unofficial build from Paranoid Android then....
By the way, factory image for Nexus 4 is out, anyone tried it already? Any thoughts? Including ART?

Well, it's kind of obvious, if you want the best experience for now you're going to want to go with the official 4.4, since the developers need their time to work their magic.
I have no crashes, i'm using ART so far cause i could care less about what's app. I'll report in about battery life observations once i've at least had this thing running for a whole day.

Feels really smooth so far; don't use any apps that crash(thankfully) on ART. Hard to tell with the battery as I came off a custom kernel that was picked for low power usage. Like with any new firmware, it usually takes a few days of my phone running before I can really judge things. Got to give all the apps running a little time to muck things up to get a solid feel for real world performance; but I'm hopeful from what the past few hours performance/battery wise.

Just switched to art on today's stock KitKat after running art on nexus 5 port for a week. No stability issues and have 165 apps installed with no bugs. Battery life is improved by approximately 15% and performance is much quicker
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk

It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. I couldn't notice any tangible difference, performance-wise. I tried it on SlimKat, though. I may probably give it a second try now on stock but the whole idea of having non-working apps like Whatsapp and TiBu just takes the appealing away for now.

Could this just an elaborate hoax to test the placebo effect of Android optimization? I don't understand the true potential if it.

I don't experience any lag at all from this device (and didn't on my S2 running Cyanogenmod for that matter either).
No lag to report on the Nexus 4... But interesting read nonetheless. Might use it on the Galaxy S2 (Which DOES lag, even though some say it doesn't. Compare both N4 and S2 side by side... It's painful to watch)
Is this like jet lag?

More like turbo lag

No lag here on this badboy!
The lag is from the way Android was designed originally. Not all apps are even optimized for the platform and others are quick ports from other platforms. Also they are still lacking with hardware to software optimizations.

Compared to my iPhone 4 the N4's browser is like internet explorer vs chrome.
Sounds like snake oil. Androids remaining lag is too deeply rooted to be squashed with some shell code parlor trick. Android gives content fetching more priority than rendering the UI, it's something that Google has to take care of by rewriting the framework. Ios does this beautifully btw, it doesn't need 4 cores for fluid scrolling and even with 4 cores nexus can't touch it ... yet.

My Android 4.2.1 Review: What happened to project butter?!

I loved the Nexus 7 from day one, it was fast, fluid and stock android is always a good thing. But somehow Google managed to make the Nexus 7 look old by providing an update which basically kills project butter. These are my impressions:
http://smartphoneblogging.com/2013/...-for-tablets-what-happened-to-project-butter/
I agree, compared to 4.1.2 on my note 2 the nexus 7 with 4.2.1 lags to much.
Has there been any information about if/when we will get another update?
Mine is still smooth as butter. Stock, running 4.2.1. You guys are doing something wrong.

No I haven't and I won't do it either, because it will only be a temporary solution as with the forever gone app. Newly wiped devices are always faster but only until you install all apps again and use them for some time. Then the lag will start again, at least this is my experience of the past years with all mobile devices that have performance issues.

There's something to what you said. But I think in this case there is something that goes awry with the 4.2.1 update mechanism and leaves something misconfigured.
Do a factory reset
Then configure Currents to not do background sync
Then change WiFi settings to not stay on when the tablet is sleeping

I agree. I've heard lots of issues when upgrading. There is a lot of changes the SD folder structure and relocation of lots of data that could be the culprit.
I can't say if it makes a difference because I reset often between Rom flashes and major updates. My N7 is still super quick. In fact it feels the same/faster then my brand new 4.1.2 N7 (my tester device). I've been on PA for a long time and haven't factory reset in a long while either.

Nope, I'm just picky on what I put on my device. Not a load of music and videos, very minimal amount of apps, stock, Nova Launcher Prime, and do regular manual cache maintenance on it to keep it clean. Never have say, eight apps running at the same time on it, either.

No, im talking about the extreme lags on nexus 7 since 4.2.1. This didn't happen on 4.1... I'm not talking about some general slowdown of the system which is happening when you load it with apps...
Mine came out of the box using android 4.2.1. I seems reasonably smooth but the app drawer suffers random lag unlike store units that run 4.1.2.
Overall on stock rom, it is not even close to lag, just a bit of minor stuttering for me with launcher that's all.
Do factory reset. Fixed all the issues for me. I had all the problems you've been having.
After reset it was back full speed.
Do it.

The former, I saw it too when I had an S3. I read it before.
It's less damaging to your battery life compared to Seeder and less placebo than supercharger but it's more intrusive and it messes around with this that are not the source of lags/issues
Most likely it keeps i/o or cpu less in idle state so it performs better, but has a cost in the long run.
Kernels are a much better approach and frankly I had zero lag issues with this phone.

I have the Octa S4 and I have flashed this too, I am using one older version though but it does indeed make your phone somewhat a lot smoother, animation and scrolling, but i'm selling the S4 and returning back to Nexus (S4 Price = Nexus 4 + Nexus 7 Second Gen (?))

The launcher is just OK, it's really Google Now's version of a launcher with it built in. I found it be a little slow and very little customization. Fine for the masses who don't know any different (which are the majority of users, sadly). Nova destroys it all day long.
Far as KitKat goes, it all depends on the ROM and the device. Some ROMs are way behind and some are way ahead. I hate to say it but if CM11and SlimKat were all I had to choose from, I'd probably go back to 4.2. Yes CM is the foundation of all ROMs so I'm grateful it's around, but for KitKat they still have a long way to go, at least for S2. Same for SlimKat. Just too many issues. The unofficial ROMs are kicking major butt though. For the Exhibit, I'd stick with 4.2 for now although to be fair I haven't tried the newest KitKat ROMs available here lately. @jfbs is working hard to get you guys a stable 4.4 though!

I can easily install Nova again. It's the launcher I use now and I love it. Thanks for the advice. I am looking forward to @jfbs' rom. I was just eager to try kitkat because it was supposedly designed to work on phones like ours, where ram is at a premium. Initial reviews did say it ran much lighter, but I am not sure if it really makes a difference.

Ultimately there is one truism I have found, functionality and speed are mainly hardware dependent. You can have the best ROM ever made in history but if the device doesn't have the hardware to back it up, it's useless. I booted the Exhibit for the first time in almost two weeks the other day and it was so much painfully slower than what I have now it isn't even funny. It reminded me how thankful I need to be that I have something else to be honest. A good KitKat ROM may help this device, IDK.
Yeah, the browser on Slimkat is all slow and FC's, even when you try to use a different browser than stock. With the other 4.4 ROMs we have I think you can just use a different browser if the stock has FC issues.
I stay using 4.2, since I can OC higher than 1012MHz and can swap the sd's.
FC stands for force close? Thanks for the advice. I will stay with 4.2 for now. I will see what @jfbs comes up with.

i notice it in chrome with websites like news.google.com and xda forums.
there are browsers that are faster that can aid in this issue.
My belief is that it is a ram assignment issue. I think the phone, or apps, limit the amount of ram each app gets. but i could be wrong.

I decided to try an alternate browser softer becoming frustrated with the same issue. In researching it, I ran into a lengthy discussion of the security and trustworthiness of alternative browsers and the developers.
Anyhow, as someone who has a history of rooting and flashing custom roms, I'm prepared to make that leap of faith in the case of an experienced XDA dev. But that's a choice for you to make.
There are a few that have been made available that are based on the same original CAF coding which was specifically written to optimize performance on snapdragon based devices (like the OP3 and OP3T). I have tried one side by side with chrome and found it to be consistently faster to load pages. Part of this improvement is that it has built in ad blocking.
Anyhow, I am now using an alternative CAF based browser as my default and am very happy..

I'm also experiencing this on Lineage OS, odly enough I didn't have this scrolling lagging in earlier builds or before last accidental clean flash. I just thought it was caused by going from F2FS to EXT4 as it kinda started when I did that conversion. But that's probably just a coincidence.

However, it isn't the rom that makes the difference. its the browser. Use yubrowser from the app store first to see if that helps.
As for apps, you won't find any rom different except maybe stock vs not.
I've noticed this too but a reboot is usually sufficient to get it to go away for me. Also noticed improved scrolling speeds on SultanXda's CM13 Rom, however I prefer to run stock myself.

Did you try RR Official? I tried Citrus and had the scrolling issue....
I did. I don't remember if I had the issue. Maybe a developer option could fix it? I use multiprocess webview.
I tried using conservative governor from this trick
https://www.xda-developers.com/onep...s-with-conservative-governor-for-some-reason/
And it improved a lot especially in scrolling pages here in xda ?
