[Q] Does it have GPS for photo location and can you run turn by turn navigation? - Galaxy Camera Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I plan on using this as my all in one device so phone can be done with google voice but:
1. Does it have GPS for photo location and can you run turn by turn navigation?
2. What is the standby time for such an all in one device application? Battery seems pretty small?
Anyone out there using it as an all in one device?

So apparently it has A-GPS support and GLONASS. Can anyone confirm that Google maps and turn by turn navigation is working?

andypull15,
Thanks. Have you tried using google voice.? I am curious as to how the camera wakes from standby when receiving a call. My nexus 7 works flawlessly but I was curious due to the default action of the camera software showing up first. Could you also comment on battery life if it is left in standby mode? Thanks.

Yes it can embed the GPS location into the photo metadata
and the standby time is pretty good, I'm into my second day with this device with about two hours screen on time and it's at 48%.
When not in use the device seems to go into a deep sleep. When I first charged it the other day I didn't use it for 8 hours and it had only lost 2% battery life by the time I turned in on.
I'm currently listening to my local radio station via "Tune In" radio and I can tell you that the speaker is very loud and of good quality.
As previously mentioned you can take photos whilst shooting video. This is a standard Android function that has been carried over to this device. There is a limit of 6 photos that can be taken in this fashion if I recall correctly.

Someone stole my nav out of my car day after xmas=(. Is there a free nav available?

I was lucky they didn't take my oakley sunglasses or checks or garage opener, but it still sucks. Is there a few nav app that show street level realtime directions? I searched, but didn't see one.
Google Navigation might help. Its in the newest Google Maps.
Thats why I always hid the GPS and whatever else under the front seats before leaving the car.
yeah I know, I usually always do that

The one time I leave my car parked in front of my condo=(. Good thing it wasn't a xmas gift. They didn't take my sonicview8000hd from my trunk either, that would really have sucked.
I think I have that on the g1 already. I like to drive with 3d view of map. Is it capable of that? Or is there a map I can download that is?

I'm guessing I already have it. I was playing with it and it was giving me voice and directions. I can't figure how to make it go to 3d view though. Perhaps I have to download more.
Ok it just did it right now. When I turned it on to the destination I wanted it went to 3d view without me telling it. That must be a default perhaps. I want to learn how to make it go to the different views. I might want 2d sometimes. Does it download the map as you need it? I wondering if I'm driving in the middle of nowhere and it isn't get much signal other than edge, but has a good gps sat view will it update the map as I am driving?
3d view

I'm still trying to figure out how to tell it to do 3d view. It just goes to 2d street view. Anyone have an idea. I figured out voice search=)
I think I just read that one has to have a gps lock then one can toggle to 3d view. I will have to walk outside to test it, but right now my gf sleeping head is on my shoulder, so I'm stuck.
http://www.andnav.org/ is free.
Dunno how good it is, but its another option
It does require data to work as it downloads the maps as you drive. When you are in normal maps mode it's 2D but when you switch to Navigation mode and it has a lock on your location it should switch to 3D...It may not be until after you start moving though. Once you are going, you can hit menu and then Layers to switch between satellite images and normal maps.
Google Maps works pretty well, but eats batteries like mad unless its a short distance or you are using a cig lighter.
I normally use a portable GPS, but I really like having the google app as a backup or if I'm down town without my portable.
I wouldn't use any GPS software unless you have the phone plugged in. Most GPS units need to be plugged in as well. The GPS on the G1 is 1 of the biggest battery killers and a good navigation app requires it to be on constantly.
Yeah, I'll prob buy another stand alone nav system
But it is a great backup especially if you in someone elses car. Atleast I know I won't get lost. Google Nav seems to work pretty well, but I don't want to have an empty battery. I ordered the 1600mah battery but it is coming from HK so prob be weeks.

[Q] GPS Issue

Anyone else have issues with their GPS?
Mine seems to get confused about where I am even though I have high accuracy enabled for location.
If I just go by the voice prompts it would get me lost.
It tells me to keep going on a street I've already turned off of.
The map seems right but is as if the gps needs to be calibrated or something.

Mine did this for like 5 minutes and then locked on and was perfect every time since.

Mine is finnicky as well for GPS games like Ingress. It's a noticeable lock on lag difference compared to the HTC One M8 which was pretty much spot on every time without much drift. I hope it'll get patched in the future :]
Sometimes the solid circle inside my GPS icon flashes rapidly and other times the whole icon appears and disappears several times a second. Any idea what's going on with that?
When using Waze to navigate, I often lose GPS lock if the phone is resting on my leg. Returns when I lift the phone.
I downloaded GPS status and did the compass calibration thing.
We'll see if that makes any difference next time I use it.

Compass defect or poor calibration fixed by calibration?

For some reason my compass seems to be poorly calibrated and when I use Google Maps the navigation works, but I sometime lose direction. In order to fix I need to rotate my phone in all different ways. But after a reboot the compass goes back to being off. Does anyone else have this issue? Is this a defect or software?
I found exactly the same issue yesterday trying to navigate around London. Google maps has been dodgy lately on my note 3, xperia z and my girlfriends HTC one s so I put it down to a bug, I might try another navigation app to see if it's the phone

Are you using a case? Particularly one with metal in it such as an s-view case. If so, you have to recalibrate the compass after every reboot.

this is not dependant on cases etc., same here as on note3, ... : with each reboot the calibration resets. maybe this is how samsung wants it to be!

Do you have same issue?
This has been an ongoing issue with Samsung Phones. This is my 3rd and and none of them have worked correctly in Maps, without navigating.
When you are just driving around (not navigating) you are using the compass....
When you are navigating, Maps is using the GPS and comparing your last point to your current point to determine your direction of travel. This causes navigating to work right and non-navigating to be wrong.
I have not found a consistent solution. Also on Google Skymap, with the AR type view, it is nearly useless for this same reason. It can't seem to sense your proper orientation due to the compass issue. (though I admit to not trying skymap on the Note 4)
Its not so much a bug, as it is Samsung and Google doing things differently.

So you have this issue with the Note 4 when using Google Maps while driving? Moving my note in all directions calibrated it but then reboot forgets.

I dont mess with the recalibration process. Its annoying and i hate it, but its not so bad that i recalibrate. I also dont reboot very often, but in the past, the recalibration doesnt stick for long even when not rebooting.
I love google maps for navigating, but it sucks for driving around. The biggest issue is that the screen turns off on its own when not navigating. Waze is great for driving around, it doesnt shut off the screen, and gives you all the traffic info you need. It also routes the voice through the phone regardless of if you are connected to the car by bluetooth. The biggest complaint with waze is that it isnt multi window compatible. On my rooted note 2 i used waze on the left of the screen for traffic issues, and maps on the right side of the screen for navigation.

Anyone having GPS issues?

I have a Note 9 on Sprint, and everytime I go to use Waze, or Gmaps, I do not get a GPS lock. Restarting the phone fixes it, but by the next day, the issue crops up again. Anyone else seeing this?
I too have issues GPS, my. device is constantly loosing its fix. It aquires 20+ Sats very fast, then fix within a few seconds (what is absolutely fine), but a few seconds later it loses the fix for a few moments, fix again, lose again, and this then goes on forever...
I now have the device (512 black Exynos ATO) since a week, but I started to observe this behavior since today!
How is the GPS performance of other users?
Had it happen again today. Went to use Waze, and it would not lock on. Installed GPS Test, and it shows no sats, nothing. Restarting the phone does fix it, but it's a pain. May have to contact Samsung/Sprint.
Done a bit of geocaching and it was spot on the whole time. Also used at work , both trouble. US unlocked 512gb

Note 9 gpsfix lost
I have the sane issue..i have tey many thinks but i havent locate the source of the problem yet
I had similar issues but it turns out the location method is always set to "phone only", changing back to "high accuracy" fixes it.

GPS signal is lost in Goolge Maps after update N960FXXU2ARJ1
I have a Note 9 since a few weeks now and it worked perfectly until I installed the latest update (N960FXXU2ARJ1), the one with the fix for the photo quality.
Now when i'm using Google Maps or Waze in my car with Android Auto my GPS loses fix. Google Maps constantly says that the GPS signal is lost.
GPS Status or GPS Essentials show 10 to 15 satellites in seconds with a GPS fix. So GPS seems to work fine. Only when driving the signal is lost.
Maybe there's a bug in the update?
Note 9 on ATT, sporadically it will ask me to turn on high accuracy setting and submit random anonymous data, but it keeps asking me, even when I haven't turned the GPS on. When I hit accept it turns the GPS on, I assume it's the weather widget or something like that needing a location.
My actual issue is I already hit accept and don't want to keep hitting accept and on top of that it will sometimes default to battery saver GPS which is useless.
I dont know how to keep it at either high accuracy or phone only when I go to turn on GPS.
Still having the issue....happened yesterday.
No issues here so far. I'm inside my apartment on the third floor, so sandwiched between apartments. I turned off WiFi to make sure it wasn't using my router. Opened Google Maps and it immediately locked on to me. Right down to what room I'm in.
I still don't know why my gps keeps trying to randomly turn on and asks me to accept or deny, regardless what I choose my GPS turns on without me turning it on.
Same issue here. Losing GPS and the finding a fix again shortly after. Happens in locations with no problem before and changes status rapidly. What's going on?
Looking for this problem in another forums I've discovered that the problem is related with Power Saving Mode in Samsung phones.
Yesterday I disabled the power saving mode and it worked flawlessly through Android Auto, even with the phone at the glove box I had a consistent and precise GPS fix.

The answer is easier (and more disappointing) than anyone might guess.
The phone simply, has a mediocre GPS unit.
But it's a PREMIUM DEVICE?

And? No one cares. OnePlus has been featuring horrible GPS units since forever.
How do you know?! Can I verify?

Of course, you can verify. Install GPS Test (or any other GPS app from Store) on two or more phones of yours (including the Note 9, duh) and see the results.

Only Notebookcheck (from what I saw) features GPS reviews, and they don't check all phones.
My experience. (from the phones I tried, owned, had. DB = Dual-Band GPS.)
Note 4: 5/5 || Always worked superb.
Note 9: 3.75/5 || Bit better signal than the 7 Pro, but puts you off by a street or two in the car. It's nothing good/great.
OnePlus 6T: 2/5 || Horrible. Even on a plain street has difficulties.
OnePlus 7 Pro [DB]: 3.5/5 || Not bad, not good. Has trouble finding you in the streets. Works OK until you enter a place with various roads (like an interchange).
HTC 10: 4.5/5 || Good. Stable, solid. Works great really.
Huawei Mate 10 Pro: 5/5 || Perfect.
Huawei P10 Plus: 4/5 || Had some trouble on foot, but okay-ish.
From what I saw, learned:
- Dual-band does NOT matter. If the module is bad, signal will be bad.
- Car glass can block out a good deal of the signal. Heated glass, heat-reflective glass. Ford, for example, uses both on cars. Does not mean it will like reduce signal by a LOT, but will make it worse.
- Phone cases matter. Even thicc plastic cases can reduce signal.
From what I read lately... the following high-end phones have good GPS modules.
- Pixel 3a: Good, thought not flagship SOC/internals/ram/storage. Only 1 camera.
- Huawei Mate 20 Pro: Great phone, albeit bit dated by now. Huawei updates are erratic, support/warranty is horrible. I had huge fights with them, since my family had 4 flagship Huawei devices. Court was always there, legal actions, threats. It's insanely bad. And now they have the Google problem (US vs China), and the phone is 100% locked down, no unlock possible. Unless you buy at external shops - but then you can't get warranty on them.
- Samsung A70: The horrible in-screen fingerprint reader ruins this otherwise perfectly great device.
GPS signal lost a few weeks ago and I tried everything but no signal. Is there anyone who can help with this topic? Galaxy Note 9 - SM-N960FZBDDBT

HUAWEI P40 Pro+ camera app geotagging

Anyone having a problem with the Huawei camera app not geotagging pictures correctly? Most of the time pics have the correct location, but a large percentage of the time, pics will be geotagged kilometres off. Two pictures taken in a row, first one is ok, the second one geotagged a few blocks away. This happens with location services (Google and Huawei) turned on, or with all location services turned off and supposedly relying entirely on the GPS. Doesn't happen with another camera app, OpenCamera. Also, track recording apps don't have a problem recording an accurate location. It's just the Huawei camera that's off.
Anyone seen this and maybe have a solution? Does it happen in EMUI 11?
Think I may have solved it. With Google Location Accuracy turned on, picture geotags are sometimes way off the current location. Turn it off, and so far they have been accurate. We'll see if it stays that way.
Nope not solved. I took the phone out on a hike yesterday. Google Location Services, Bluetooth, WiFi, all turned off, should be relying only on the GPS. Several pictures were geotagged kilometers away from my actual location. I was recording my track at the time on the phone and it appeared to be more accurate than my standalone GPS backup unit. It also baffles me why the camera app records the image direction in only a fraction of the photos
After much experimentation I've come to the conclusion that the geotagging in the Huawei camera app is inconsistent and useless. What a disappointment for so expensive a phone that takes such great pictures. Unless I'm using some special feature or can correct the geotags afterwards, I'm dumping it in favor of OpenCamera. Can someone suggest a better camera app?
