CM10 on Nook HD+ - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I am thinking of getting a Nook HD+ from Staples since it is on sale for $199 only. Before I get the HD+ I would like to check on the status of CM10. As per the development thread it seems we are making good progress, but I would appreicate if someone could tell what works and what does not work.
And also if you think its better to get HD+ compared to Nexus 7.
Thanks

I was thinking about getting one too since it is so cheap, but all the reviews say the speakers are barely audiable. Which won't work for me since my 5 year old is not interested in wearing headphones.

It is better than barely audible. Just not loud.

Had a Nookcolor yesterday and put CM7 and OC Kernel to it

Nooter now has a Quand score of 1700 vs DS7 2300.
Everything on Nooter is better than DS7 except the speed.
I can't imagine if there is similar scale of dev on DS7 as those on Nooter, how great this device can perform ....
Where is our CM7 on DS7.....
oh, the battery life on nook color is surprisingly great running cm7... (maybe any device will be better compare to DS7 battery life...)
Be on the look out for something in the next few days. 1.?ghz? Maybe keep your eyes peeled

Nook color is laughable. It'll be way better to just purchase a G tablet.
The support the nook has is unbelievable though.

Returned NookColor =(
Damn my girlfriend does not want it. She wanted an ipad 2 white .
which pissed me off as she thinks CM7 is not as good as iOS.

The G Tablet's screen is laughable. I gave it to my wife for gaming. Trying to read on that POS is a nightmare. The Nook is still pretty badass for the money.

Nook Color...Or Nook tablet? Which is better for hacking/rooting?

Well... I know the nook tablet has better specs, but I am just doing this from a tinkering perspective. I heard the nook color can be easily rooted and changed to use cm7 and even ice cream sandwich. Those of you who have it, is it decent? like web browsing, youtube, UI navigating smoothly. Overclocked? Bluetooth?
I'm trying to decide, because at my work I can get a nook color for 180$ bucks. I did buy a nook tablet for 230 bucks. But I am just wondering, if it's easier to use the nook color, and easier to root it to mess around with it. Is it worth the extra money for the Nook tab?
What do you guys think?
I've got two NC and a single NT in the family. The NC is definitely more hackable. Solutions are coming for the NT, but there's nowhere near the selection yet. The NC is also almost unbrickable. It's a great device to make mistakes on.
Performance is very good. I won't say "buttery smooth" because things are definitely faster on the NT. Even browsing seems to benefit greatly from the dual cores. However, with my NC overclocked to 1.2 GHz, Netflix and video are perfectly watchable. Battery life is also pretty good, better than any other device I own.
I'm running B&N 1.4.1 rooted because I want the B&N content, but I would suggest CM 7.2 RC0 Mirage if you don't care about B&N stuff. ICS is also nearly viable for day-to-day use (depending on your day, of course.)
Bluetooth is hit-and-miss depending on what you want to do. I've read of people having success with BT keyboards and GPS, but I've only tried the latter myself. It worked well enough that I could have a GPS receiver up on the dash, but I haven't done much actual field testing with it. BT audio is definitely out on the NC, and from what I've read, the NT as well.
The NT does provide a mic, so that might be important.
I considered upgrading to the NT, but now I'm waiting for the $250 quad-core devices that are supposed to hit this year, so I'm keeping my NC and trying hard to save my money. At $180, the NC is a decent deal, but you might find refurbs for even less with a bit of looking. I'd suggest a NC.
When and where to dive in....
The answer today would be to use the Nook Color... You will get a decent device with a mature OS (CM7) and limited peer support for ICS (CM9)... In a month or 3, the Nook Tablet may be the better choice, but as of today it isn't . (There is a copy of CM7 running on it in alpha now tho.)
Both devices will disappoint if you are worried about ICS support, because some driver source is unreleased, and ICS versions of the drivers may never come out at all. (You might prefer to wait for the 7" ASUS in this case.)
Hope this helps...
I was trying to make the same decision back before Christmas. I asked my sons to get me a NC. I could still have returned it til the end of January, but decided to keep it. (Although I actually had to exchange it because the wifi had intermittent problems connecting.) The NC is way more hackable at this point. I agree with bobstro. For now, the NC does it for me. If the 7" Asus does come out with quad cores and is only $249, I'll probably jump on that.
As for what you can do with a NC, lots! Some people root, some don't. I didn't because I wanted some of the features you get with the native OS, like reading Nook ebooks in B & N stores. I made my own dual boot card from Racks' directions here. I really like the flexibility of booting into either the native Nook OS, MiRaGe (CM 7.2) or ICS (CM 9). Using some advice in the USB host threads here and here, I was able to kluge together a working headset and make calls through Skype last night.
I also made another SD card that has Miui 2.1.20 on it. You can find the files here. I used verygreen's instructions for a size-agnostic card here.
I'm using a SanDisk class 6 16GB uSD card from Costco for the dual boot card. I have Miui on a SanDisk class 4 8GB uSD card. If you decide to boot from uSD cards, read a little in the several threads about the cards. The faster class cards generally do not work well for booting an OS. And SanDisk cards seem to work better than others. The threads are here and here.
You can also find NC's on ebay from Barnes and Noble refurbished for around $149 shipped. They have the same one year warranty as the new ones...

They're both good. The custom ROMs based on GB for the NC have been around longer and are more stable. The ROMs for the NT aren't as refined, but the device is faster. Depends on if you want fast or stable.
You may be better served buying neither and getting an HP TouchPad on Craigslist. I just bought one the other day. There isn't a stable version of CM for it, but you can dual-boot the alpha builds with WebOS.
The Nook Color All the Way...
I would suggest buying the Nook Color, as everyone else before me stated. Roms are stable as hell and it can be overclocked to move pretty damn fast and smooth. While the Nook Tablets specs are superior, there doesn't seem to be much available for it as yet. In time though, I'm sure there will be!
Current Devices
HTC Vision/G2-Virtuous Quattro beta8
Samsung Vibrant-ICS Passion v10.5
HTC Espresso/MyTouch 3G Slide-Cyanogenmod 7.1.0
Motorola Cliq/DEXT-Cyanogenmod 7.1.0
HTC Dream/G1-Super Froyo v8.4
Barnes & Noble Nook Color/Encore-Phiremod v7.1
For what it's worth, the $180 nook color isn't necessarily the best deal, as you can get refurbished ones from B&N on Ebay for $150.
Edit: and nook tablets for 200 apparently.
I opted for the NT

CM7 is stable for the TouchPad. CM9 Alpha2 was just released, and despite the Alpha branding, it is incredibly stable as well. The only real complaint for using it as a daily device is that the front-facing camera isn't supported, but then again, the front-facing camera was pretty low resolution to begin with. It'd be nice to see it working for video conferencing, but that is hardly a deal breaker, and you wouldn't get that on the Nook Color anyway.
Having both a Nook Color and a TouchPad, and despite the device being unpocketable, the TouchPad has easily replaced my Nook Color. The Nook Color has been a great device for me. As has been mentioned it is extremely hacker friendly and nearly impossible to brick, but it has a limited future for me. The Nook Tablet seems like it would be a nice improvement over the Nook Color, but as has also been mentioned, it isn't as flexible as the Nook Color right now.
If you can find the TouchPad for the ~$99 price (arguably anything less than the Nook Color), and/or if having a smaller and more portable device is more important to you, those are the considerations I'd make. With either choice, you should be very happy.

Used Nook for 7 year old??

Hey all,
A friend of mine is selling her old nook and I'm thinking of picking it up for my 7 year old. The Nook is a 8GB running 1.4.2. Do you think this would be a good beginner tablet or should I wait for a Nexus 7. Also what is a good price? Looking on ebay I see them going for $60-100.
Jeff
If they are telling you that its an 8gb, then it is probably a Nook Tablet and not a Nook Color.

Not true. Nook Color is an 8GB device. It just uses 3GB for its own use and only 5GB is available on emmc media partition. So if you read the specs, it says 8GB. You can tell the difference between a nook color and nook tablet by the color of the bezel. (Color is black and tablet is silver).
And a nook color is a great device for a seven year old. Those are reasonable prices for a used color.

I wouldn't pay more than you have to. If you're planning on putting some alternate firmware on it, it'll make a nice little tablet. I'd definitely stick it in a case with some shock-absorbing and screen protecting capabilities. Even if your kid is careful, others probably won't be.
The only drawback I can think of is that it only supports two point multi-touch, and some games might expect more. Ninja Fruit didn't work too well, IIRC.
I thought it was fruit ninja. Change the firmware though

The Nook Color with CM7.2 on a SD makes a great general purpose starter tablet for a kid. My 6-year-old daughter has had one since Christmas and she loves it. The NC is rugged enough to take alot of abuse from a kid without breaking.
Yes I agree, it really does hold up well against kids. I picked up a used nook color for my kids (4&6) because they wouldn't leave mine alone lol. I put a screen protector on and its worked out great.

To buy or not to buy?

Hey all, I did not see a topic like this posted so forgive me if there already is one.
I am looking to possibly buy my first tablet, and probably the HD+. I currently own a Samsung Galaxy Note (original, european version) which has a 1280x800 5.3" screen. Thus why I haven't bought a tablet. The nexus 7 was tempting but the low resolution relative to my phone and the lack of SD slot dissuaded me. Plus, while 7" is larger than my 5.3" phone, it wasn't enough.
Now enter the HD+ with its byond HD resolution, 9" of real estate and i'm interested. I played with one at my local B&M store and was impressed. I wanted to check xda first to see what the development community is like before I buy. So far the only negatives are:
* Most of the videos on youtube call it "laggy" or "slow" or "unresponsive" Is this fixed at all?
* Complete lack of USB support. Proprietary charger, etc
* Pretty heavy compared to 7" tablets
I'm posting this essentially to request someone convince me I need this tablet and that the devs are behind it with rooting, etc. How stable is CM10 now on it, for example?
Wow this forum is completely dead. Guess i have my answer.

nook hd+
I go my hands on a 16gig nook hd+ cheap i love it i chose it because the 7 inch tablets seem fine for reading kind of like a paperback but i also enjoy reading comics and way to small on a 7inch. The 10.1 inch tablets are a joke for reading books and are way to long for reading comics like holding a stone tablet in your hands. The nook hd+ and fire hd 8.9 seemed like that sweet spot i was looking for. I chose the nook hd+ over the fire 8.9 for many reasons first the deal i got on it $220 plus a teal book case, the screen is fantastic, micro sd card slot i dont use any streaming and i dont pay for downloads i have a giant harddrive full of mp4 videos epub books and cbz comic files i load myself, and right out of the box the nook hd+ reads .cbz comic files and pretty good at it so i didnt need to pay for anything, root or sideload any apps.
Now i read all the reviews on the nook hd they all reported lag unfinished operating system and nook store didnt have the same amount of multimedia support as the others. Im running the latest software on my nook hd+ and i have zero issues zero. And i have way to many of my own files to load to care if the nook store dosent have a certain movie ill download the latest torrent it plays my bluray 720p mp4 rips like a champ ill download latest books and use clibre to convert and load my epubs and ill download comic files and use comic rack to convert to .cbz
It comes down to you if you want to pay for downloads go with another tablet if you want to load your own stuff you wont get more bang for your buck then nook hd+
Plus if your gonna root that sd card slot is a must have
Oh ya i dont care about a front or back camera on a 9inch tablet thats why i have a phone and laptop
My advice: buy!
Then put CM10 as to verygreen on it and never look back.
I have the direct comparison to a nexus 7 and it is no contest. The screen of the HD+ is absolutely beautiful, the speed of the OS is absolutely okay - much better that the N7 running 4.2 actually.
With a 32 or 64 GB Sd-card you have tons of space.
I would say, atm the HD+ is the best value tablet available (thanks to the developments going on here).

Definitely buy.
I too was looking at a new tablet for 2013, similar to you. I have Kindle Fire 1st generation so I know what 7 inch tablet can do for me. Movies and reading books was fine but surfing and comics - not that good. I ordered the 64gb version and looking forward to it
The only downside I was considering is lack of front facing camera for Skype but I solved that problem with a new phone. Another downside is the speakers location on only one side but I can live with that.

Bluetooth works, no lack at all! I stream music and use MAPS with my phone's GPS using BT.
I've had mine for about a week now. Some very good help on here for installing google play store (without even rooting) and booting cm10 from the sd card. That's why I got it. The main drawbacks in my mind was no access to play store, and proprietary version of android. But those issues have been taken care of by folks on this forum, and the only thing left as negatives were the proprietary charging/usb port and no camera... I think I'll be able to live with those.
I still haven't gotten adb working but adbwireless seems to do the trick so that's not an issue now either. I'm on the Buy It side as well.

Aside from rooted stock being allergic to to any changes to system files I quite like the Nook HD. It is a good size for reading at the table but so was my old Galaxy Tab 7+. I could have gone for the N7 but I have a bitter hatred against Google for deciding on us that we don't need that micro sd port. Sounds abit like a certain other company no?
Buy if you are ok with that limitation (only if you are on stock though)
Frankly I liked the Nook Color the most

It really depends on what you want to do and how you plan to use it. I had the Sero pro from Walmart which is almost identical to the Nexus and returned it when the HD+ went on sale. I know the Sero is faster but I really wanted something a little larger and the Nook was light enough that I don't mind holding it for an hour on the train. For me the Nook made more sense and I am happier with it than I was with a 7 inch tablet.
you've got them both so you really don't need any input from us. just flip a coin if you can't decide.

I love hd+'s screen resolution and 7" is a little bit too small for me. My choice would be hd+. Also, I would pick up N7 16g for $140 even if I want to get a N7.
I kept both. Nexus 7 is for gaming and doing work including e-mails while traveling. My Nexus 7 with the minisuit keyboard combined only weigh slightly more than the HD+... Nook HD+ is for web browsing, books, movies, light gaming(when I want better graphics especially with HD quality games and willing to give up a bit on frame rates.) But I really don't play games much with HD+. I read a lot of books and technical manuals using the HD+. It is much more nicer for reading than Nexus 7 also movie experience is much better simply because of the larger, higher resolution display. If I have to keep only one, it'd be a tough choice. It would come down to what is more important. I found though I use the Nook HD+ more often unless I'm traveling.

exnyos is a better processor than the tegra 3 - though the gt3 8 isnt since it's only dual core. but the screen on the gn8 is pretty good, just about the same ppi as the nexus 7, but surely not as good as th nook. t3 does outperform on games however.
i don't like tw much either, but some have grown to like it.
and yeah, right now i'm a fan of the gn8. who knows who'll be my new 8 incher next. all my tablets and phones other than my ipad and nook are sammys. i'm not really a fan boy, it's just samsung has made exactly what i wanted when i want it. i've got no problems switching when some else has a nice product. i gave up my gt 8.9 for the nook. i'm not sure if i'll ever gibe asus another go. after 7 bad tablets from 2 models i quit. they realky ned to work on some quality control.
