won't stay connected to pc - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My sons got two hd+'s for xmas and I'm in the process of attempting to connect through adb, which I have done many times with v various phones, yet when I plug the nook in I hear and see it connect and then immediately disconnect over and over again. Ideas?

It seems its only when I'm in usb debugging mode. Both are doing it.

I've rooted, installed GAPPS and so on many Nook HD+ tablets; most for my friends, since they have no idea how to do it. I've noticed this problem occurs due to the Nook not being installed correctly in ADB mode.
What I would recommend is going into Device Manager, find "Android Composite ADB Interface" and make sure it has a green-chip-like icon on the bottom left corner of the icon. If not, then it's not functional. To solve this, once your tablet is connected, it should be detected as a media player/portable device, with the name BNTV600 (I think it is/was - all this is still in Device Manager by the way). Right click on the device, and attempt to change the portable media player into a "USB Composite" device. That should solve the trick.
If you're still having problems, I can connect to you via TeamViewer remotely to access your computer, whilst your tablet is connected and solve the problem for you (if I can). If you'd like, I can completely root your tablet for you. I've done it for a couple of friends over TeamViewer, so if you'd like, I can do it for you too.
Best of luck.
P.S. Try disabling "USB Debugging" mode and set "Enable ADB".

[Q] Can't connect my Captivate through USB anymore

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues connecting my Samsung Captivate to my computer. For about a week, it worked fine, I was able to transfer files to my phone but recently I noticed that the "USB connected" notification is not showing on the phone when plugged in to the computer.
Now, when I plug in my phone to the computer it just charges but doesn't comunicate with my computer. A friend of mine bought the same phone right after I did and he gets the "USB connected" connected when he plugs in his.
I tried using his USB cable but again, the phone is not recognized by Windows nor the phone detects it is connected to the computer. I've tried installing several USB drivers that I've come across on several forums, but nothing. I even downloaded and updated Kies to the latest version, but still nothing.
My phone is unlocked and NOT rooted, and I'm using Windows 7 x64. I've set the USB Settings to Mass Storage, even to Ask on Connection, but it doesn't ask anything when I connect the phone to a USB on my computer.
Sometimes Windows knows there is a device connected but says it couldn't recognize it.
I already did a factory reset, but the issue was not solved. I've tried connecting it to other computers, but still hasn't been able to connect my phone correctly.
What could it be?
Thanks!
Hmm. You have Mass Storage selected and up-to-date USB drivers. Try selecting USB-Debugging and Stay Awake in the Development option of your phone. If that doesn't fix it, then I have a few other ideas.
Make sure the usb door is completely open, it should click into place, some users have reported this solves their usb issues.
I did what you told me, but still my phone ain't recognized by Windows nor my phone is aware that it has been conected to a computer
What other ideas do you have in mind?

Have you tried using a different USB outlet on your computer? I had this same issue when I plugged my phone up using the USB outlet on the front of my computer then when I tried the one on the back of my computer it worked just fine.
Are you running a launcher app? I use launcher pro and can't connect until I change back to the default launcher with home switcher and launch it.

First off, think back. If it worked for a week and then suddenly stopped, what changed? Maybe you updated something on Windows or changed something on your phone. There's a reason it just stopped.
You can try using a free program called USBDeview.
It might do the trick for you and help you install the correct drivers. I'm thinking you no longer have them.
1. Download USBDeview (link is above)
2. Plug your phone in and open the program. Find all the HTC drivers-delete them
3. Unplug your phone and plug it back in
4. The correct drivers should install automatically
You can also try updating the drivers manually.
Galaxy S drivers (These are for ADB, but will work fine)
1. Click the Start Menu on your computer and right click "Computer"
2. Choose "Manage" --> it will ask you to continue --> "Device Manager"
3. Plug you phone in and look for it to pop up, probably under Portable Devices
4. Right click --> "Properties" --> "Update Driver" --> "Browse" --> "Let Me Pick" --> and navigate to the location you extracted the drivers to.
This is most likely a driver issue. I doubt your phone is messed up. You'll get it eventually. I also had a hard time getting my Captivate to connect. After uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers (more than once) it finally worked. One last thing, for now. When you uninstall drivers, also make sure you don't have any installed under your program list. As in, Control Panel --> Uninstall a program. Good luck!

I just did the new AT&T update and mine is now having this problem. I have to manually go into manage applications > usb settings > mass storage to get it to work now

I did all that yesterday, but the device ain't listed in the USBDeview nor it shows up in the Device Manager
did you finally fix this problem? because I'm having the same issue here
Same here. It was working fine, I could connect to Kies, transfer music in Media mode and see both sd drives in Mass Storage mode. Then I rooted today and now I get nothing. In anything but Kies mode I get the Windows Bong of Recognition, but still not visible in Explorer. Also, my Home screen stays active instead of switching to the USB animation like it did before. I know this can't be a consequence of rooting the phone, can it?
EDIT: More weirdness, with the phone connected in Mass Storage mode if I look at My Computer in Explorer there are 2 extra drives showing, but they are greyed out and when I click on either of them it asks me to insert a card as the drive is empty. WTF???
UPDATE: I unrooted and managed to get my USB connection back to working. It is still a bit flaky as I sometimes have to disconnect/reconnect several times before it works, but at least it now works although it sometimes loses sync in the middle of transferring a file. Can't imagine why simply rooting the phone would cause the loss of USB connectivity. I am going to reroot and see if it occurs again.
OK, a rerooted the phone and this problem is now back. I have no problem connecting while in debugging mode. I installed OCD (non-Market apps mod) and when I turn off debugging and connect I get the Windows bong and see the USB icon in the Notification bar, but the MTP screen never comes up and I can't see the phone in Explorer (Mass Storage mode) or in WMP (Media mode). Kies can;t see it in that mode, either. I really don't want to have to unroot every time I want to look at the phone contents. Any ideas? PLEASE!
I'm having a similar problem - I installed the Perception ROM and immediately afterwards I can't see the USB connection at all from my PC or my Mac. The USB icon on the phone does not come up either.
I'm trying to get my hands on a different cable - but the weird thing is when I plug the USB into my computer the phone starts charging for like half a second and then stops.
This is really annoying. I tried changing the rom to Cognition 3.02 but that didn't change anything.
There are a few topics on this here on the forum - I would recommend the following:
How are you rooting your phones? Nobody has said exactly how they are doing this. Are you using recommended rooting methods? Or are you using some app found on the market?
Make sure you have USB De-Bugging is turned on.
Make sure you have it listed as ask on connection.
For those who can see the drives in Windows...
Plug in your phone and then pull down your notification bar and click on the USB connected message. It will give you an option there to mount your SDCard(s) to Windows allowing you to transfer files.
Kies is junk - I'd recommend uninstalling it as it seems to cause more issues then it solves.
Use the drivers I have posted in the Q&A section (these are the ones that are linked in Design Gears Odin 1 Click Back to Stock post btw) - but I would try and COMPLETELY removing the pre-existing drivers before installing the new ones.
Make sure the USB Cable is plugged into the back USB port that is directly on your motherboard - this will ensure it's not a computer/hardware related issue.
I know of one user who had to go through his computer and manually remove all remnants of other drivers. I have my phone connected to both a Windows XP 32bit and a Windows 764bit systems and have been lucky to not have any USB issues.
If none of that works - I'd suggest taking it to your nearest AT&T/Rodgers shop and see if they can get the phone to connect (make sure it's back to stock!). If not they should warranty replace the device.

This isn't my first rodeo... But to answer your questions:
I used the rooting method posted in XDA forums - the one-click rooting.
I've used the drivers included in the xda-forum. Not the kies software.
The only thing that changed was the loading of a new custom rom. The cable works (confirmed on my friend's phone). I can't get odin to restore back to stock because I can't get the computer to recognize the phone in either normal or in download mode. I've restored to stock using the jh7 in the stickied q&a thread
I don't think it's a hardware issue either - I think it's software-based. I'm going to try to take it to an at&t store today at lunch to see what they say.
I also have that problem only I noticed it when I cleared the dalvik cache. It messed up the auto rotate so it was always sideways and now I have no connectivity to the PC. Let me know how ATT treats you.

[Q] nook not showing in list of devices in adb command prompt

does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can get my nook to show up in my list of devices attached?
It will not show up, so this missing link is what is stopping me from pushing market to my nook.

a good starting place is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882751
thanks for the suggestion i should have mentioned that i am running a MAC
I use a new macbook air running the most recent Mac OS for android software development and was frustrated at the start. Now it is like clockwork.
The first time seemed the toughest.
My initial configurations was froyo with usb set to debugging support.
Plugged it into my mac and didn't see the device with "adb devices".
Unplugged it and plugged it in again - still didn't see it.
I switched the nook from usb debugging to usb storage. The nook indicated that a usb cable was present and I could see the device in "finder" as a usb drive.
Switched the nook back to usb debugging and presto - there it was in adb devices!.
It will still disconnect from the mac after a period even without going to sleep. The solution is to unplug/plug it in again and it will show back in the devices list.
Thought I was going mad getting this to work but I've got this down to a quick process.

thanks for the idea because any idea is something to look into at this point.
problem with your suggestion though is that i am running honeycomb on my nook i do not have a way in the usb selections to toggle between usb debugging and usb storage.
Try adb wireless. Works well for me under linux mint.
i cant do that otherwise i would, i cant get to the point of putting market on my device to where i could even download the ADBwireless app. since i cant do that i have to go with the usb plug in. in other words im screwed
adb kill-server
adb devices
Run the above as Root (if possible) while your NC is plugged in.

Potential (very annoying) USB connection issue

I went into menu -> settings -> connectivity, and set the USB connection to "Always Ask" when connecting to a computer so that it would ask me if I want to use Charging/Mass Storage/Media Sync/etc. Even with that box checked, no matter what I do, when I connect the phone to my computer, it does NOT ask me what USB connection mode to use. Can anyone else confirm whether or not they experience this problem?
Thanks!
SOLVED - driver conflict with my Samsung Epic. Connecting one then the other wreaks all sorts of havoc.
call Verizon or LG for that support..OR try your control panel windows settings..devices

If not...try a different USB port on the computer.
Sounds dumb, i know...but it worked for me today when I had the same problem. And I think I recall it working on my old Incredible.
SOLVED
SOLVED - driver conflict with my Samsung Epic. Connecting one then the other wreaks all sorts of havoc, between mass storage mode and whatnot. When I switch the LG from charge to mass storage and back on the fly, it's doing something to the samsung drivers. When i reconnected my samsung, then the LG again, things went cuckoo for cocoa puffs until I rebooted.
I can't post a new topic as I have less then ten posts but I have an issue with my connectivity as well. When unplugged the phone still shows the USB icon in the top left corner like it is plugged in. However when plugged in the phone will charge but when connected to a computer mass storage mode will not work or show up. I have tried it in windows xp/ osx on my MacBook. Windows 7 on my desktop and nothing. The drivers are good as it was working before. I have done a wipe/data, restored back to cubed 1.1 mod and it is still doing it. It doesn't bug me that bad as I use andftp to move my apostle back and forth from my NAS to sdcard. But I would like it fixed as trying to put music or ISO's for my psx emulator can take a minute over the wifi. Any help would be appreciated.

[Q] Galaxy Note wont connect to pc

Hello forum !
i have used a couple of hours now trying to find a solution to my problem both here on the site but also on the internets.
i just recently became the happy owner of a Note, but i have been completely unable to connect it to any of my pc's ive had a galaxy i9000 that i didnt have any problems with but with my note it wont work.
under win7 64bit - when i plug the usb cable a "boc opens" in the drop down menu called MTP and when i klick that nothing happens, ive trid the varies ways of removing the sd card unmounting it etc. and debugging and so on but wont work.
it randomly connected once but then it dissapeared from my computer.
under winXP 32bit it just says usb device not recognised, i really wanna root this thing so i can play with the true power of this amazing device.
and on both pc's ive tried with kies and driver packs both together and seperately.
anyone out there that can help me out with this problem ?
cheers
and happy new year

Before connecting it to the PC with the cable, click "connect storage to pc" in the USB settings. After clicking it, then it will ask you to connect to pc. If you connect to pc before clicking it will not connect.

Hello i have done that but the same happens ive done it like it says i should i just dont get why my pc wont recognise it , when i press it and then it waits for me to plug it in, i do that the dialogue box shuts and then nothing happens besides windows saying unrecognised device connected
Strange, Mine connect fine just like how marinervijay mentioned. Go to Settings > Wireless> Usb Utilities and press connect first and then insert your USB, then press connect USB. Voila. There should be a window prompting to open in your windows just like when u insert a flashdrive to ur computer.
iknow its supposed to work like that.
the problem is that it doesnt work :/
Okay, have u tried resetting your Note to factory default?
no i havent tried that, because its all new it didnt work since i got it, i never thought that that might help, ill give it a go.
thx
On another, you might have a defective USB given to you by ur retailer. Perhaps you can contact them somehow and ask them to replace your USB?
do you mean the USB cable delivered with the phone ?
Cheers
Yes. Could be a defect. I'd suggest you check with your retailer if it is replaceable if none of what mentioned is working for you.
Hi,
Have you ticked USB debugging? Its under Settings>Apps>Development
Then it should show usb connection in notification tab, tap it and set usb storage as on.
There may be few problems here so I will suggest different solutions, one might work for you
1. Turn off your antivirus and connect, it should work, see after connecting mobile that does it install something near "Bottom clock"?, open "my computer" see if it gives you N7000 (give it a minute). sometimes your computer settings are a problem
2. If no, Install latest Kies on your computer as it downloads Samsung drivers for your phone
3. after connecting 1st time, computer takes some time to recognize your mobile--be patient--
4. if all of above doesnot work, restart computer, connect USB to another (or same) port (turn off antivirus) and see
5. Nothing, try in Setting>Applications>Development>debugging Mode
6. if not, try on another computer
7. still does not connect, change USB cable
8. Still nothing there might be a issue with your device, but I will not conceive that every quickly, trying all above few times should resolve the issue..

Hey,
I am able to get USB storage, and I got root access thru the batch files and help provided in this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

USb Problem
Hi I've had the same problem.
I have been using the Note quite happily as a Mass USB storage since early December. Plugged it in this morning and I don't get anything. I have also tried the debugging and all the other things listed. Here's what I get:
Usb debugging on - just a sound and a charging indication
Usb debugging off -usb connected Mtp connected on the notification pull down page. When I click on notification it just shuts the window.
I have tried dialling *#7284# and selecting USB PDA which didin't do anything for me but others seem to have had some luck. See this link:
blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/2010/12/24/How-to-repair-the-USB-not-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
I will be rebooting tonight but I don't really want to.
only the Samsung USB wire works
I had this problem today. The Note would never connect the USB or external storage. I searched and found this thread.
I then noticed it was another USB cable (I gave about 1,000 now!). I tried the Samsung one, and it worked first time.
It is annoying, because these cables are normally swappable with any device. It appears Samsung have defined their own standard. The great thing about standards, of course, is that there are some many to choose from!
USB cable was defect - and replaced
Thanks for the help everyone

[Q] Nexus 6 not recognized by PC, with a twist! Help me, please!!

EDIT: RESOLVED!
The issue was caused by AdFree (h**p://adfree.big*tin*can.com/, thank you forum software from objecting to a URL and erasing my entire edit). This is strange because I have an older version of AdFree on my old Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and it worked fine for years. This is very bizarre and the symptoms are very misleading, but as soon as I uninstalled AdFree, my problems stopped.
I guess I need to find a new ad blocker, can anyone recommend? This was resdon #1 why I rooted the phone.
****************************
Hi everyone, have a problem with my brand-spankin-new N6, and it's driving me up the goddamn wall, hoping for some help.
Running Win7 64 bit. Never had issues of this sort before.
Got Nexus 6, rooted using Wug's kit. Everything went peachy.
Then I tried connecting it to my PC, and... no joy. The PC makes the usual "ba-donk" noise that indicates that a USB device has connected, and the little icon shows up in the taskbar with the green dot goin round and round... It grinds for a while, and then pukes out with "The device was not successfully installed" error. I tried different USB ports and different cables, same result. What's worse, this is happening on my laptop as well (also Win7, 64 bit).
Also in the system event log I see this: The device MTP USB Device (location Port_#0004.Hub_#0003) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash. Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem.
Now here's the kicker... if I shut down the phone (power off) and then power it on while it is plugged in, it shows up in the Windows Explorer, and I can access and browse it (and Windows even says "device installed successfully"). But if I unplug it and then plug it back in, the above scenario plays out again, and I can't access my N6.
Under Device Manager, N6 shows up under "portable devices", sometimes as "Nexus 6" and sometimes as "MTP USB Device". Sometimes it looks normal, and sometimes it turns up with "this device could not start." If you think this is maddening, it's because it is.
I have tried:
- Shutting off USB Debug - no effect.
- Rebooted multiple times - no effect.
- Downloaded the latest google driver and the motorola device manager - no effect.
- Uninstalled driver while Nexus was plugged in (right-clicked, properties, uninstall driver). Re-plugged Nexus, Device manager shows "USB MTP Device", but device cannot start. Right-clicked on device, update driver -> drivers that I have on my PC -> USB MTP Device -> it grinds for a while, still cannot start the device (Code 10).
- Used USBDevView to blow away any Google drivers, and anything resembling Nexus 6, then replugging it and reinstalling it - no effect.
- Uninstalled Wug's kit, including the drivers - no effect.
Driver information shows that it's using Microsoft's USB drivers,
I don't know what else to do, and am quite beside myself. I've read multiple posts on the subject, some of them suggest "uninstalling the driver while the phone is unplugged" which is not really an option what with the phone not being listed in the device manager when it is unplugged! Also, my laptop didn't have Wug's kit on it in the first place and it's displaying the same symptoms.
Now of course in a pinch I could shut off my phone and reboot it every time I wanted to connect it to a PC., but that is patently stupid and definitely doesn't qualify for "working as intended" for a goddamn $700 brick!! I'm starting to suspect that rooting the phone somehow pooched it, because it was connecting fine prior to root. And Wug's kit has never given me issues! (I rooted my previous Nexus with it, now granted it was the original Galaxy Nexus from way back then).
I feel very stupid for having to ask this, but I really have never seen this kind of crap before. I mean, what can be simpler than connecting your phone to your PC, right? (ha-ha). Please be helpful and gentle, I really would like this resolved. At this point I'll follow any step-by-step instructions, even if they involve sacrificing chickens and doing the ol' rain dance. Thanks in advance.
Issue resolved!

I ended up just pasting a bunch of entries into hosts file. Blocks most of it, I think (though can't seem to squash ads in some games like Angry Birds for some reason).
