Nexus 7 OTG tips and tricks. - Nexus 7 General

Hi guys thought I'd start the year with a first thread OMG. (My mum would be proud- yeah right)
ATTENTION:
The following tasks were performed on a stock rooted 4.2.1 nexus 7 16 GB
NO 1:
keyboard and mouse... They both work surprisingly well together with a curser that looks strangely like another os out there.
No 2:
Connecting USB powered devices like ipod s, phones and others and charging them. (Not as effectively but suitable for emergency Facebook pokes) addon: some devices u can use for mass storage see no 4
No 3:
USB gaming devices... This is sort of a ongoing project for most manufacturers as with 'different hardware comes different responsibilitys'
(Getting a bit too OTT must be that shot I just had) anyway nexus does support it on some games go to play store and dwn load tegrazone.
No 4:
USB mass storage: because nexus doesn't mount new hardware automatically u have to get a app that will for nexus: nexus media importer and (ROOT) stick mount. Not the only but ones I use and recommend
I add some more in a bit depends how hungover I am LOL
HAPPY NEW YEAR XDA *HICUP*

What's with the strange format? Message unreadable.

Dunno what's happened there but I was drunk when I wrote it so anything could of happend

Yep . I've tried and it works fine . I usually connect 1tb WD my passport device . I have tried it several times without any problem

Stickmount is what I use, I even bought the pro vesion but it caused some double mount and unmount problems so Im just using the free vesion and no problems at all.

yeh I use stick mount as well. it is just easy to use.

I must be doing something wrong because my Nexus 7 won't read my 1 TB WD external hard drive. I am rooted with the stick mount app.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

Is it a portable with seperate power?
What have you tried?

When noobs attack...in HTML.

Guys, I have seen people quoting that the nexus doesn't mount external drives via otg automatically.. But when I tried with ES file explorer under the /mnt I can see the drive contents and the MX player can load the videos without any problem..
Then what is all about the drive not mounted automatically.. Can someone explain.. BTW, I use paranoid 2.9 ROM..

Many of the aftermarket ROMs in here have this function built in. It is not something that comes in a stock ROM, but it also does not require root to get it working. I use an OTG cable I got off eBay on my unrooted stock N7 with the Nexus Media Viewer app from the Play Store and it works just fine at reading several of my USB thumbdrives.

When I try to connect mass storage with otg, it won't recognize exfat.

Gamepad or controllers for dell streak 7???

IS there any gamepads that work with a WiFi only stock HC Dell streak 7 ? Or any xbox/ps3 controllers?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
I can say that I cant get my sixaxis to actually work with any streaks. After pairing it never actually detects it.
USB ones dont work as stock kernels dont support usb host mode.
Try a wiimote, mabye that'll work
Thanks I'll try, is there a video for the Wii one or a tutorial?

I read for the sixaxis it harms to be rooted,

Yes you need to be rooted to use the sixaxis, I tried the compability checker tool and it says it should work. But after pressing the go button it launches but never actually does the final step of detecting my sixaxis.
Oh ok, well post about it if it works out

I got my sixaxis working, I use a HC rom from dj steve. One tip I have after you use the PC pairing tool to enter the BT ID in. Look at the local BT address that sixaxis says your system is. Not quite sure, but think it showed me a different one then the system about page did. Then it was working.

[Q] Wireless HDMI Stream

hi,
i already got the mhl adapter for micro usb to hdmi, thats working fine,
but i there a solutuion to do this wireless.
i dont only want to stream videos or audio, i want to have the full homescreen streamed.
the reason is, i want to connect an external hdd via usb
thank you
easiest way is probably ipad2/iphone4s with apple TV2 on IOS5
check this out for android
http://code.google.com/p/androidscreencast/
which does the same thing except in place of Apple TV2, you need a PC there.

I think DLNA is your only option there. You need a TV with dlna support.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
but with dlna I only can stream movies or pictures or audio
still need to stream the home screen or games

connection to tv. please help

I try to connect my phone to my samsung tv through usb port as hard drive and i only can see the external sd. I cant find internal. I am on rocket rom 10 with notecore. Please help, i dont have the samsung wireless lan adapter so the i cannot connect it through dlna.
It would be easier to get a MHL adaptor and just mirror the phone on your tv.
Ebay/amazon have a load available you shouldnt have to pay more than £10, I think mine was about 7 including p&p.

Have you tried to install "Multi Mount SD-Card" app from Play Store and in settings choose "Mount SD 1 & SD 2"? =)

Is the USB OTG implimentation a full implementation?
Does it just support mass storage devices on USB2, or can you do anything USB with it like attach a USB2 hub, and then attach a keyboard, mouse, vga adapater, ethernet adapter etc.
I realize that appropriate drivers would need to be available in the kernel for the specific devices, however the key questions is the low level support.
One of the frustrations with my Galaxy Note is that OTG only partially works, like for mass storage, however the OTG USB driver doesn't seem to support USB1.0 or 1.1, and I can't seem to compile working drivers for the ancillary devices mentioned above, so I was hoping the T had a better support.
All I know is I have used Xbox remote and mouse/kb ABD also Mass Storage

What cool things to do with Nexus 7?

As the title says, what do you do or can be done?
I haven't really found any cool things to do with the tablet. Other than watching movies on a bigger screen than a phone, I haven't really used it for anything different that I can't do on my phone (albiet a bit slower)
Use ur ps3 control to play games

A few guys here have replaced the indash stereo in their car with the N7. Looks pretty good too.
get all the square enix games. final fantasy 3 is so fun to play on nexus 7 rather than my 4" incredible 4g. Also chaos rings is fun as well as wild blood
Control your computer remotely using Splashtop 2 or TeamViewer, both for free.

+1 for Splashtop 2
If you have a Linux machine, install ConnectBot on your Nexus 7 and SSH into your home computer.
Another thing that seems to impress folks is when I use BubbleUPnP to connect to my home PC over the Internet to watch movies.
Speaking of movies and SSH, login to a Linux machine with mplayer installed and watch a movie in ASCII (works best with cartoons):
Code:
$ mplayer -vo caca Aladdin.mp4

Play Ms. Pacman
Use it as an external monitor/remote control with Chainfire's DSLR Controller app if you have a compatible Canon camera.

It's replaced my Sat-nav, and no it's not mounted on the windshield, its just below the air vents. Also used an NFC tag on the holder so when I put the tablet on the holder, it fires up the navigation app automatically
Also using it to control my TV as other users have suggested
I almost feel as though this post should be a sticky lol. Great ideas guys! Keep em coming!

Well it already has adb. Just open a terminal and type adb! You also can get fastboot on it (search xda for fastbootarm). And you would need a usb otg cable. Not sure if it works too well (my cable hasn't arrived yet), but you could also install Ubuntu and do it from there.
