[Q] Have I bought the wrong one? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, just purchased a kindle fire hd 7 as I am after a cheap android (running)tablet mainly for work, so emails, web, diary etc. I was reading though the kindle fire section of xda and saw all the rom options as I want to run one of the jelly bean roms on a kindle. Then when I searched for kindle fire hd I realised that the two different kindles are very different! Can I run any jelly bean rom on my fire hd? I have been in the rom development section and there seems to only be one rom (CM10) and that is still in development but when I go to 'show us your home screen' thread there are loads of android 4.xxxx looking screens.
Can I put a JB rom on my fire HD? I'm not new to roms/rooting etc but am confused at the moment.

SensationAlex,
No, you can not install Jelly Bean on the Kindle HD yet. We are working on a custom ROM
for the Kindle and may release it in about 6 months - so far we are finding the Kindle to
be a real challenge. You bought the best one in the Kindle lineup. The Kindle Fire HD surpasses
most of the 7" tablets in quality and sound. Our company just bought a Nexus 10 and we
really enjoy the speed and the quality of the screen but the Kindle 7" is by far a better
sounding tablet. The Kindle HD Fire is the best sounding tablet, period. So if you love
to watch Movies, you bought the perfect tablet, if you want to do development, you
should get a Nexus 7. You will not like the sound on the Nexus 7", especially when
you have already been spoiled by the Kindle. If you like a challenge and have patience
keep the Kindle, it is top of the class 7". You can Root it, install a custom GUI, Install
Google Play, everything except a custom ROM.

Just been reading the kindle section of xda and have seen what people are doing, I have been using nova launcher for ages on my phone so will put that on my kindle and then with emails, browser and a few other apps I'll be happy. Can I use the stock email app with nova launcher? Or is there a different one?
I'm kind of glad there are no roms for it, will stop me messing about with roms each week!

Nova Launcher on Kindle Fire - Stock email app does work

SensationAlex,
Yes, I can relate, you and I are similar in that manor. I find the Kindle is the most stable tablet in the
office due to that fact. You can use the stock email app with Nova Launcher. As a matter of fact,
you loose nothing when installing Nova Launcher and gain a beautiful interface.

Ne0hacK,
We actually successfully loaded Jelly Bean on the Kindle Fire HD, it was very buggy and is not ready
for production use. We are about 6 months away from releasing the custom ROM for the Kindle
Fire HD 7" current rev 7.2.3. Hashcode released a custom recovery on 11/14/2012 named
Safestrap v3.05 Beta unfortunately this project is "On Hold". We are hoping Hashcode is
able to release a production version of Safestrap prior to our custom ROM. Only time
will tell.........

Why Amazon Fire HD

My wife has been talking about the Kindle Fire HD to be a Christmas present to our children. Now I'm a Google Nexus phone owner and enjoy the rooted and custom ROM's very much.
I'm comparing the KFHD and wonder if another Android device like the Google Nexus 7 wouldn't come with the same stuff as the KFHD and give me a more open system to fiddle with.
What are the main reasons for going after the KFHD over any other android tablet (considering the KFHD and Nexus 7 almost have the same price point)
Will things like Amazon Prime not work on android tablets? From the Prime web page I only see an iPad support but nothing generic like an android tablet.
I would appreciate any feedback or experience.
I do have an original kindle, but hardly use it anymore, since I can do the same stuff on my Thrive android tablet.
Thanks Jens

Since the tablet is for a child the number one reason is kindle free time. It offers parental controls that no one else does. Google it and find out all the details but that would be the main attraction over the Nexus

I don't think there's a need for yet another KFHD vs Nexus 7 thread. Try one of the existing ones below for a range of opinions...

Please join one of those discussions. If those don't work for you, the Nexus 7 forum has plenty more with the bias slanted the other way.

[Q]Where is the 8.9 forum and will it have custom roms?

Why do they add forums for unreleased devices like the DROID DNA and Nexus 4/Nexus 10 but not the Kindle HD 8.9"?
Anyways my question is since Amazon released open source files for the 8.9" does that mean custom roms are possible or the bootloader is still locked?
Should be the same as the HD 7, but will know today. Mine is being delivered today

Still locked... Why would amazon change their minds and allow it to easily happen?
Boot strap is being worked on for the 7", don't see why it would be any different BUT they are just getting into customer hands, so we'll see if it works for both.

If your risky, you can try running qemu tool and reporting if it works. It is very likely to, but be careful.

The forum admins are considering the options for the 8.9" device(s) and we should get a decision soon.
In the meantime, questions and discussions about the 8.9" device are welcome in this forum since the 7" KFHD is its closest sibling. Should a new forum get created for the 8.9" Kindle Fire, all relevant threads will get moved there. Any discussions regarding the 8.9" Kindle Fire should be clearly marked as such in the title to eliminate any confusion in this forum.
Stay tuned...

Kindle Fire HD 7" Dual Boot

I've done quite a bit of searching, both on Google and here on the forum and I haven't found an answer that applies to the 7-inch KFHD. I currently have Cyanogenmod 10.1 running on it, but it would be really nice to be able to have both JB and the stock Amazon OS installed and be able to switch between them. Is there any way to do this currently? I haven't found anything saying one way or the other. Does anyone else have any idea?

I don't think it's possible, not at this stage. Stock Amazon OS runs on Amazon's ecosystem, in that it is built to work only with Amazon services. This is why simply sideloading Google Play will make it fail miserably. Google's ecosystem requires the GoogleServicesFramework in order to run. There's no way to dual-boot because currently the 1st bootloader handles fastboot yet the 2nd handles the recovery. No one's ever made a 2nd-bootloader public before, and the work that was done by fattire, verygreen and Hashcode is the first. So while it's not completely impossible, I don't think it will come in the near future.
What about different roms?

I currently have Cyanogenmod 10.1 on my Kindle Fire HD 7" also, but what about dual booting it with another rom such as AOKP? Then it wouldnt need the amazon ecosystem.

I'm also very interested in how you would dual boot CM10.1 and the original Kindle Fire HD 7" OS. I have read somewhere that for now, that's the only way you can use the Amazon apps (due to the above cited Amazon ecosystem). I have TWRP and the 2nd bootloader, but haven't found any threads on dual booting different ROMs.
Dual Booting?
Too bad.
I am running the N2A OS on my 7" KFHD. Mostly a satisfactory experience, but I would like to have the ability the read borrowed books from my Amazon Prime account on it, and also to play Amazon Prime videos. Unfortunately, Amazon has not seen fit to allows either of these to be done on an Android tablet, only on the Kindles (borrowed books) and Kindle Fire tablets.
I have not seen any indication that they are planning to change their policy with respect to these permissions - dual booting would be a great solution.
I have tried the workaround for the Amazon videos (installing Adobe Flash), but have found the results to be less then satisfactory.
Similarly, I tried rooting my Kindle Fire HD and installing Google Play, but found that I was getting repeating Google Framework has stopped messages, and another message as well.

[Q] A Couple Kindle Fire HD 7" 3rd Gen. Questions

I'm new to this device, and therefore new to researching about it, so if this question is redundant, I apologise. But even if it is, I hope someone will take a moment to help out.
Just got a Kindle Fire HD 7" 3rd gen for Christmas. The serial number starts with 00D2, and after it went through a couple updates, it's now running Fire OS 4.52 (build 11.4.5.2). I have a factory cord on the way, but I'm looking to be prepared for when it arrives. Is there a way to root this, yet? Can this device be rooted with Firerooter?
Also, if it is possible, I'm possibly looking to install a different ROM as well, and I'm hoping for some recommendations. I want something that offers more customization ability, and a wider set of options, but I don't need something as extravagant as CM 11, for example. I also don't want one that will lag on this device (I hate waiting), or consume the battery much faster than Fire OS 4 does. I'd prefer if it consumed less battery power honestly, but I figure that's asking for too much. Any help is appreciated.
Firerooter. Yes. KFSOWI modding community on Google+

need lollipop rom recommendations for a kindle fire hd 8.9 jem

Pretty simple i am looking for recommendations for a lollipop rom for my kindle fire hd 8.9. right now i have a unofficial cm12 rom on it found here on xda it works fine but it is a little slow. i am using twrp as my recovery etc. Im not to worried about flashing over boot loader kernel etc etc. I would like a rom that has ota updates from the projects repos etc. I would like to basically start with rom + gapps and play store. Basically a rom made for raw performance.
Sound etc must all work as this basically functions as my tv set lol
I would just drop back down to a 4.4.4 but i like the features of lollipop to much and if nothing else is out there the little sluggishness is something i can live with. On searching the forums i found some roms but they are a bit confusing in if they are even working.
No offence to the mods admins etc but it would be nice to have a sub division for the 7 and 8.9 inch models of this tablet or are all roms for the 7 compatible with the 8.9? That is something i never quite understood.
