[Q] Can't enable USB debugging - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Hi,
I am having trouble enabling USB debugging. The setting looks ok, and I can mark it, but if I go back, and enter the Developer Options again, the check box is not marked anymore. So somehow it seems that it is not saving it. If i stay in the Developer options menu after enabling it, it isn't working either.
My phone is rooted, but still on stock software. I am running build JRO03C.I9305XXALK5
I have tried searching for this issue, but noone seems to experience the same thing.
Any suggestions?

I just wanted to make a quick check to see if this was the only Developer option that was affected (It was). But then i tried again with USB debugging, and it works(!). It stopped working again later on, but simply enabling/disabling another option (I used 'Protect SD card') seems to "fix" it temporarily. :fingers-crossed:

Try dialing *#7284#
Select "Qualcomm USB Settings"
Select "MTP+ADB"
Hit OK and go back to exit
DO NOT PLAY WITH OTHER SETTINGS !!
This should switch it on and leave it on.
To go back to the normal setting use the first Option "MTP"

[Q] USB Connection Options

Hello there.
First of all, the backgrounds...
I'm using CM11 by Maclaw, running 4.4.4
I got curious and unticked MTP on the notification tray. Usually the system won't let you untick it unless you tick the other option. But this actually left both options untick, so now it won't even connect to my laptop, and the option in the notification tray disappeared. All that is left is the USB debugging mode option. I still hear the sound when you plug a usb device on my laptop but it's not just connecting. I've tried rebooting. There's also no setting (that I could see) that would let you choose which connection method you want.
Any idea what's happening here? Or how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!!!
Update: Never mind. You could actually press the menu button when inside Storage in Settings.

USB debugging doesn't show up

hai, can someone help me with this problem?
i already enable dev option and turn on usb debugging. but what happen is, when i connect my note to PC alwasys charging only. no option to change it to media transfer.
i already tried to changed setting on storage, but i can not find three dots menu. see attachment for the capture. tried restart ,turn off and turn on again the usb debbuging still the same.
or is it related with others setting, since i just used openline service las week to make my note 5 openline.
thank you.

MTP Connection Problem on Mi5

Hi Everybody,
I'm trying to connect my Mi5 with my PC using MTP connection (i'm on Ubuntu). The problem is that I can see the device connected and mounted but i can't copy anything from it. It always crashes. Strange thing I can copy files from pc to the device without any problem, but if i try to copy something from the device to my pc it always says " libtmp: Could not get file from device."
I've also tried with windows, but nothing changed. i cannot copy or transfer any type of file.
While googling around i've found that this might be an Android 6.0 related problem rather that a MIUI one.
But i've also tried a possible solution that has been proposed which consists in changing a configuration under developer option and switch it back but it didn't work.
here's the steps i've followed:
Open Settings
Enable Developer options:
Go to About phone (or tablet)
Scroll to the bottom
Tap Build number repeatedly. After several taps you will see it count down and then say "You are now a developer!"
Back to Settings
Tap Developer options, near the bottom
Scroll down to and tap Select USB Configuration
Change it to Charging only
Tap Select USB Configuration again
Change it back to MTP (Media Transfer Protocol)
I don't know how to proceed.
If someone can help me it would be great!

Nope didn't work at all
How long do you have to tap build number?` nothing happens here :/
Edit.
Found it tapping Miui rather than build version, but cant find the USB configuration after being in developer mode.
@zofox I don't have a solution but can confirm the problem.
On WIndows 10 latest release, it's working like a charm.
When I connect the Mi 5 to a Usb 2 or Usb 3 port on Ubuntu (same computer) it does nothing, only charging works.
So that means: I am not sure if it's a problem with Ubuntu, your PC or both!

I'm using a dell XPS13 2015 and it doesn't work neither on windows or ubuntu
right now i'm using ftp to comunicate but it's pretty annoying also the fact that i can copy stuffs from pc to mi5 but not the opposite it's pretty strange ...
It might be the USB port(s) in question: check if the port used is on some external controller or part of the PCH/southbridge (i.e. part of the motherboard); next up, try direct ports instead of through USB hubs (if any in between). Other than this, I have no further idea.

Seems like it was a cable related problem ?
Changed it and everything works like a charm ?
Mods can close the discussion ?

First go to settings, then click the option 'about phone'.
Then click on 'miui version' several times until u become the developer.
Then go back to settings and find the 'developers option' in the 'additional settings' .
Afterwards look for the 'usb configuration' option in the 'networking' section.
There select the 'mtp' option
This worked very well for me and solved all my problem
change the cable works like a charm, thanks!! you guys save my semester.
This works like a charm to me. Only one thing I have noticed is, in my phone(Mi5) Developer options comes under Additional settings of systems& Device section.

That's exactly what helped me !
Thanx bro
I was facing the same issue in redmi note 5 pro.
I had same on Redmi 5 (rosy), my 'solution' was to drag drop down down, tap Android System and change from 'Charge this device' to 'Transfer files'. I was expecting a pop up when I connected the cable to select what I wanted to do, none came.

MTP Dosent Work ON PC, Charge Only is always on.

For a few days now, after connecting my usb cable to the pc, i get the "connect" sound on both the PC and the Phone, but it keeps going to charge only, not MTP. I checked the Dev Options, set it to MTP, still didnt work.
I also did a factory reset, nothing. Any ideas?
Also, the notification popup for choosing the connection type via USB, no longer shows up.
EDIT: I tried multiple cables, they are not the problem.
Remove driver on PC > right click on start button > device manager > show disconnected devices and uninstall your mobile driver.
Install again the huawei suite and try connect your phone.

I've tried all of that obvious stuff, even went trough the registary and got rid of the drivers. I need out of the box ideas.

Again, all of the USUAL stuff I've tried. One thing i have noticed, under the options where i chose what type of connection i want to have, if i change it from one to another, it dosen't update right away, i have to close the options, and reopen them to see it change.
Considering you tried the usual software stuff and that you've tried multiple cables, it may be your phone's port that's damaged or something.
If you don't have any sensible data on the phone I suggest doing a factory reset, just to discard the possibility. But if that seems like too much hassle, I would get an ftp app on the playstore to do all the data transferring between your phone and any windows machine. I personally use the solid explorer plugin.
Hope I helped!

You said you've already performed a factory reset, tried cables, tried reinstalling drivers cleanly, and tried several settings on the phone.
Have you gotten HiSuite installed? If so, does HiSuite recognize your phone at all?
Have you also tried different computers? I would figure you did since you said you tried all the obvious things....
If HiSuite gives no response at all and you've already factory reset before, I feel as though its either a hardware problem like FAFI_1999 has suggested, or it is a very deep rooted software bug (behind repair for a regular user, maybe even in kernel, plus there is no clear way of knowing where the exact problem lies at this point so we wouldn't know where to look in the first place).
In this case, best advice I could give you is to send your phone to a service center.... At least if it still falls under warranty....
Does adb see your phone?
For me it always goes to charge only and I have to manually check (or uncheck and recheck) the Files option in the notifications.

The problem is, the notification doesn't even show up, and when i go to options to change it, it dosent want to switch, it just stays the same, no matter what option i choose.

I think i know the issue and i also got the solution.
Maybe the problem is an update KB that was installed on your PC. 3 months ago, Microsoft releasead a KB update that broke MTP ( https://betanews.com/2017/03/10/microsoft-admits-mistake-pulls-problematic-windows-10-driver/ ). Read the article and do what it's recommended for your windows version.
good luck. V

If that KB update is installed, at every reinstall of USB driver its gonna install the wrong one. I had the issue on my laptop and had to uninstall the kb and then plug again the phone in to reinstall the correct usb driver.
If the bug is caused by windows, even if you don't know how it's possible, you should try to repair windows by refresh. It's a long shot, but i had a similar problem, i could not use PPPoE service because my friend unwillingly did something wrong on his laptop. I had to refresh windows to repair the network card driver and finally configure PPPoE service on his laptop.
So... refresh?
best regards, V

How did "developer options" settings get enabled?!

Kindle fire 7th generation. Had it for a few weeks, and I've checked out all of its settings many times. A couple days ago, I notice that there's a new set of settings-developer settings. After some 'research' I find that these settings are 'turned on' by going into settings/device options, then tapping on the serial number 7 times. I never did that! Also, 'enable adb' was switched on! I switched it off and cleared data for the settings app, to 'turn off' developer options. This is really disturbing to me.
Any ideas as to how they got switched on?
Should I be concerned?
When switching on adb I am warned that my fire and all personal data are NOT SECURE with adb enabled.
Under the adb setting it says "to debug over usb". Is adb only for usb, or can it be done over wifi?
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my apps tosee if I can recreate this happening. It does not come back on.
